How to Shutdown JVM Instance

I have a java program which I start(run) from console, the program acts as a listener so it never exits, however I want to be able to it shutdown by running a batch file or running a script which is basically in another console window, any ideas how can I shutdown a JVM instance from another console window.
*Note: Pressing <Ctrl+C> in the application console is not an option.

Maybe have a socket listener on a certain tcpip port.
Then send a message to that tcpip port... one which your original app will interpret as a "shutdown" signal.....

  • Cannot shutdown MaxDB instance

    Hi Experts,
    I have a Netweaver system which makes use of a MaxDB database.
    Recently when I tried to shutdown the system by running 'stopsap' I received the following error:
    There are still active users connected to the database.
    On order to shutdown the database with stopdb you first have to stop all database applications. This includes MCOD instances and database utilities.
    I have no idea how to disconnect active users or how to shutdown MCOD instances. None of the developers are connected to the system in any way. How can I disconnect the active users in order to shutdown the server?
    Thank you,
    JP

    Hello JP,
    to figure out which task is still connected to the database, you can use dbmcli:
    dbmcli -d <db_name> -u <dbm-user>,<password>
    > db_connect <dba-user>,<password>
    > db_executenice select * from sessions
    You'll get an output like this:
    dbmcli on MAXDB1>db_executenice select * from sessions
    OK
    CONTINUE
    SESSIONID                      = 984
    OWN                            = 'NO'
    SESSIONTYPE                    = 'OLTP'
    ENCRYPTION                     = 'NO'
    <b>STARTDATE                      = '20071010165801000000'</b><b>APPLICATIONNODE                = '<servername>'</b><b>APPLICATIONPROCESS             = 0</b>
    APPLICATIONTYPE                = 'ODB'
    USERNAME                       = 'DBADMIN'
    As long as you see CONTINUE in the second row of the result, more results are available. You can list them with command
    db_fetchnice
    Using this information, you should be able to identify the connected user/application.
    However, if you have already shut down the application and if you are sure that no users are executing important tasks e.g. with SQL Studio or DBMGUI, you can just stop the database with dbmcli command db_offline.

    Melanie

  • Multiple JVM instances and host computer performance

    Hi,
    I was wondering if anyone has any facts or sources about how running multiple JVM instances impacts the performance of the hosting computer ?
    For example, say you have a long running server process that creates a JVM, how is the performance of the computer impacted if there are five of those processes running, versus ten versus ...
    This is a very "it depends" question, but I would like to get an idea of the baseline performance impact that comes with running a JVM, and if there is anyone here that has experience running multiple JVMs I'd appreciate any feedback, whether it's "don't do it, ever" or "no problem!"
    Thanks

    My only experience with multiple VMs is when I have several Java GUI apps (eclipse, jedit, dbvisualizer) plus tomcat and maybe an ant running on XP.
    I don't think that the existence of multiple VMs is in and of itself a problems, but JVMs do tend to be fairly memory hungry, so if you don't have a lot of RAM, you may find yourself crawling along as swapping heats up.
    I think that later versions of the Windows VM have started to take advantage of sharing certain core libraries, or pieces of them, so that you don't have as big an incremental memory footprint for additional VMs. I don't know which versions or how much this actually reduces the foot print of second and subsequent VMs though.

  • How to use loaded JVM instance?

    I have made a browser extension for Internet Explorer - a vertical explorer bar. The main code for my program is in Java. I have written some native code in C++ also which loads the JVM and runs the Java classes. The java code runs fine when I run one instance of the internet explorer. But when I open a new window, the JVM cannot be loaded again. How could I use the JVM instance that has aready been loaded?
    However, when running a new instance of the internet explorer from the start menu, a new JVM instance is loaded and everything works fine.
    Would anybody please help me.

    If I read the question correctly...see JNI_GetCreatedJavaVMs()

  • Certain application's JVM instance

    Hello,
    I didn't really know in what section to post this thread, so I figured this was the best one. If it is in the wrong section, notify me, and I will post it in the correct section.
    I am making an application in C which requires getting the process ID of a specific JVM instance. The problem isn't getting the process ID, but it's differentiating a VM instance from another. How would I go upon doing this?
    Thanks

    Wow! Can't get much easier than that :)
    Thanks alot!
    EDIT: The application I am trying to get runs as an applet. So unfortunately, every applet prints: sun.plugin2.main.client.PluginMain
    Any ideas?

  • Multiple JVm instances error in iplanet 4.1

    the error message is :
    info ( 1184): JVM instance has already been created within the process, numVMs=1
    I have an NSAPI filter which uses JNI and will create an individual JavaVM.
    I understand in the process no more than 1 JavaVM shall be initialized yet I can't find a way to attach my NSAPI filter to the JavaVM created by the iplanet server.
    Does anybody has any idea how to solve this?

    Thanks for your reply. It seems odd though that IWS 4.1 seems to work fine w/sdk1.4.1 on my WinNT machine???

  • Create new JVM instances

    My question is about JVM instances. How do you create additional instances and how do you make sure that you are using the same instance? For example, if I execute an app like so
    java StartDeamonhow can I make sure that when I execute a second app that it is running in the same JVM so that it interacts with the first app?
    java StopDeamonAnd vice versa, how could I make sure that an app such as this one runs in a separate JVM so that it doesn't affect the processes in the previous JVM?
    java KillAllDaemonsInThisJVMInstanceDoes that make sense?

    would you mind elaborating on that? what options are
    there for a custom solution? How do others do it if
    not in Java? If I execute a second program, does it
    automatically get put in the same JVM instance of the
    first program? I'm assuming it does.No. In windows, for example, when you run a Java program you are really starting a new instance of java.exe. There is nothing built in for it to know to use an existing instance.
    Do additional
    JVM instances get created automatically? If so, what
    is the criteria?Always using a new instance is the MO. If you want some other behavior you need to implement it yourself.
    It's not easy. Even if you find an existing instance of the JVM, you need someway of sending it a message telling it to run your main method. Also, how will you be sure that the JVM is one created by your application and not some other application that won't appreciate your application crashing it's private party?
    Do a search on these forums and you will find a bunch of solutions (many of which are probably unusable.)
    Off the top of my head, you could use memory mapped files to mark whether your application is running. If a second instance is started, send a message to a port that will tell the first instance to create a second instance of your app (assuming there is only one application.)
    Is the application a GUI or non-visual?

    BTW - Please find your shift key and apply it once at the start of every sentence, for abbreviations and acronyms, and for proper names. This helps the reader. You would not want to make it harder for the reader, would you?
    E.G. How (1st word) to find out the JVM (abbreviation) instance name which is executing the Java (proper name) program?
    Edit 1:
    And for pity's sake, please choose a specific subject in future. I altered the subject of my reply to 'Name of JVM instance'.

    HELP

    To run more than 1 instance of Logic at the same time, you really need 2 copies as while the license allows you to install on 2 machines (1 laptop 1 desktop ideally), they can not run at the same time.
    So, where now? Well there is a legitimate way around this, assuming you have a fast enough network between the 2 computers and that is to have 1 machine running as a Logic Node to share the work out. When I'm not 'Out and about' I could use the MacBook Pro as a node for my home setup (For example) running some of the soft synths for example.

  • How to Patch Multiple Instances on same oracle home

    Hi All
    I Have 4 Instances running on server like below
    DEVSTAG /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0
    DEVUAT /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0
    DEVREVT /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0
    DEVREG /opt/oracle/product/11.2.0
    i want to Apply the patch set 11.1.0.7.1 to DEVUAT & DEVREVT Instances , Can someone please help .. i dont want this patch set applied to DEVSTAG Instance .. how to exclude that Instance from getting patched ?
    Thanks in advance .. hope my requirement is clear.

    Which patch are you referring to ? The database patching tool (opatch) generally applies any database patch to an ORACLE_HOME. You will need to follow the instructions in the README of the patch. If you need to only patch one instance, then you will have to create a dedicated ORACLE_HOME for each database (i.e they will not share database executables). If you share ORACLE_HOME amongst multiple instances, then you will have to patch all of them simultaneously.

  • How can a JVM terminate with an exit code of 141 and no other diagnostics?

    Hello,
    We are encountering a JVM process that dies with little explanation other than an exit code of 141. No hotspot error file (hs_err_*) or crash dump.  To date, the process runs anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 days before the problem occurs. The last application log entry is always the report of a lost SSL connection, the result of an thrown SSLException.  (The exception itself is unavailable at this time – the JVM dies before it is logged -- working on that.)
    How can a JVM produce an exit code of 141, and nothing else?  Can anyone suggest ideas for capturing additional diagnostic information?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Environment and efforts to date are described below.
    Thanks,
    -KK
    Host machine: 8x Xeon server with 256GB memory, RHEL 6 (or RHEL 5.5) 64-bit
    Java: Oracle Java SE 7u21 (or 6u26)
    java version "1.7.0_21"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_21-b11)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.21-b01, mixed mode)
    JVM arguments:
    -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
    -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode
    -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled
    -XX:MaxPermSize=256m
    -XX:NewSize=64m
    -Xms128m
    -Xmx1037959168
    -Djava.awt.headless=true
    -Djava.security.egd=file:///dev/./urandom
    Diagnostics attempted to date:
    LD_PRELOAD=libjsig.so.   A modified version of libjsig.so was created to report all signal handler registrations and to report SIGPIPE signals received.  (Exit code 141 could be interpreted as 128+SIGPIPE(13).)  No JNI libraries are registering any signal handlers, and no SIGPIPE signal is reported by the library for the duration of the JVM run.  Calls to ::exit() are also intercepted and reported.  No call to exit() is reported.
    Inspect /var/log/messages for any indication that the OS killed the process, e.g. via the Out Of Memory (OOM) Killer.  Nothing found.
    Set ‘ulimit –c unlimited’, in case the default limit of 0 (zero) was preventing a core file from being written.  Still no core dump.
    ‘top’ reports the VIRT size of the process can grow to 20GB or more in a matter of hours, which is unusual compared to other JVM processes.  The RES (resident set size) does not grow beyond about 375MB, however, which is an considered normal.
    This JVM process creates many short-lived Thread objects by way of a thread pool, averaging 1 thread every 2 seconds, and these objects end up referenced only by a Weak reference.   The CMS collector seems lazy about collecting these, and upwards of 2000 Thread objects have been seen (in heap dumps) held only by Weak references.  (The Java heap averages about 100MB, so the collector is not under any pressure.) However, a forced collection (via jconsole) cleans out the Thread objects as expected.  Any relationship of this to the VIRT size or the JVM disappearance, however, cannot be established.
    The process also uses NIO and direct buffers, and maintains a DirectByteBuffer cache. There is some DirectByteBuffer churn. MBeans report stats like:
    Direct buffer pool: allocated=669 (20,824,064 bytes), released=665 (20,725,760), active=4 (98,304)  [note: equals 2x 32K buffers and 2x 16K buffers]
    java.nio.BufferPool > direct: Count=18, MemoryUsed=1343568, TotalCapacity=1343568
    These numbers appear normal and also do not seem to correlate with the VIRT size or the JVM disappearance.

    True, but the JNI call would still be reported by the LD_PRELOAD intercept, unless the native code could somehow circumvent that.  Using a test similar to GoodbyeWorld (shown below), I verified that the JNI call to exit() is reported.  In the failure case, no call to exit() is reported.
    Can an OS (or a manual) 'kill' specify an exit code?  Where could "141" be coming from?
    Thanks,

  • How does 1 ASM instance in a 10 node RAC cause all 10 ASM instance to hang

    Linux RHEL4
    11.2.0.1.0 GI
    11.2.0.1.0 RDBMS
    11.1.0.7.0 RDBMS
    10.2.0.4.4 RDBMS
    Yesterday we had one of the ASM instance on our 10-node cluster hang with a latch "ASM file allocation latch". Oracle support has stated we are hitting a bug with is fixed in the latest PSU.
    What I am trying to understand is how a latch on one ASM instance caused all 10 ASM instances to hang?
    Oracle Supports explanation still does not answer how all 10 ASM instance were affected other then the faulty code that the patch fixes. Bellow is info out of the SAR.
    Data Guard Site:
    ================
    ARC1 PID 21508 reports ORA-240 'control file enqueue held for more than 120 seconds' at Thu Oct 28 11:35:54 2010. This message means ARC1 PID 21508 was holding the enqueue past the maximum tine limit of 120 seconds.
    Next ARC0 PID 17398 reports ORA-16146: 'control file enqueue unavailable' at Thu Oct 28 11:36:52 2010. This means ARC0 PID 17398 tried to access the controlfile and it could get the lock.
    ARC1 PID 21508 is then killed at Thu Oct 28 11:49:57 2010.
    Killing enqueue blocker (pid=21508) on resource CF-00000000-00000000 by (pid=23078) by killing session 5.3
    We see that RSM has been restarted by Broker. This matches to the alert.log and messages showing RSM being restarted several time. i.e. RSM0 started with pid=84, OS id=27915
    Since this started happening around 11:14, the problem may have really started then instead of w/ the CF enqueue block.
    The primary appears to be shipping redo to the standby using asynchronous mode. Unless there was a gap, I do no know if ARC1 should have been doing any remote network I/O. Because a log switch to thread 1 sequence 5235 had just happened at 11:33am, I suspect it was a local disk I/O that was started at least. The ORA-240 is reported at 11:35, exactly 120 sec (or 2min) from this log switch. Notice also the entry to show the log thread 1 sequence 5234 was registered to the controlfile didn't happen yet.
    ASM Side:
    ============
    From the systemstate dump on ASM, multiple processes are waiting on 'ASM file allocation latch' and we are kind of stuck on stack:
    ksedsts()+461<-ksdxfstk()+32<-ksdxcb()+1782<-sspuser()+112<-0000003218E0C5B0<-kfuhInsert()+175<-kffilCreate()+601<-kfnsUFG()+3691<-kfnsBackground()+4382<-kfnDispatch()+527<-opiodr()+1149<-ttcpip()+1251<-opitsk()+1633<-opiino()+958<-opiodr()+1149<-opidrv()+570<-sou2o()+103<-opimai_real()+133<-ssthrdmain()+214<-main()+201<-__libc_start_main()+219
    This caused the hang on the ASM side and hence ASM was not responding to the database. The CF Enqueue issue on the database was a side effect of this.
    This is a direct <BUG:9232266> which is a duplicate of <BUG:8974548>

    Thanks Murali,
    I was little reluctent to open a tar since my experince says that its better to troubleshoot the issue yourself instead of spending time with the Oracle support :)
    Well, I got some more information on this : the sql for the process id of ASM instance is :
    Alter Diskgroup mount all;
    It looks like it is unable to mount the diskgroup and get hunged at that point , is it due to the new disk added to the system or do we missed something after adding the new disk.
    Also, the ASM process can not be killed from unix box while the ASM is down.
    Will appreciate your time if we can move in any directions from here ..
    Thanks ,
    Ankur
