How to smooth edges?

Hi all,
I am in hopes that someone can tell me how to smooth the edges of the numbers in the attached image?
Thanks for any advice, hints. etc.

Hi.
Here's a little more food for thought.
Noel and Paulo have offered good suggestions for getting very close to the desired result. But the characters might still need a little tweaking.
Before I tweaked, I would convert the character to a vector path. And do my tweaking on the path. Refining the path should be fairly simple, and when you're done you have a character that can be scaled to your hearts content and it will be crisp.
Taking Paulo or Noel's method as a starting point, Ctrl+Click on the layer thumbnail then Alt+Click on the "Make work path from selection" button at the bottom of the Paths pallet. In the pop up, select a Tolerance value. 1or 2 pixels if your character is small. Higher if it's larger. Experiment to get the best effect. You will now have an editable vector path. It needs to be edited.
Then using the Direct Selection Tool (A)and the Pen Tool (P) you can perfect the letter. There is no drawing with the Pen Tool. Just adding and deleting points. Some points will have to be converted from corner to smooth and vice versa. Some will need to be moved a little. I selected the point or points then used the arrow keys to nudge them.
Below is my finished vector path. As you can see, on this particular font most of the handles are vertical or horizontal. Part of what gives this font its characteristic shape. And it makes things a little easier. Once a point is in the right position, just hold down the Shift key while you drag the handle to adjust the curve. Mostly points will have to be deleted. The fewer the points the better. But no less than you need. They're cheap. (Caveat: Make sure you rename your work path. Otherwise, if you make a new path, you'll lose it.)
Below, the path is rendered at 3 sizes, Huge, Large, and Actual Size of the screenshot. They are all crisp. Make it big as a barn and it will still be crisp.
Anyway, if you're going to be fiddling around with fonts, I'd suggest you learn vectors if you don't know them already. The scalability is necessary. As Noel said, Ps is not ideal for this. But the vector tools in Ps are quite good enough to get you going. If you are comfortable with paths, you can convert the Magic Wand selection directly into a path and not refine it first as Noel and Paul suggested. That's what I did. It won't look as good as a converted selection modified by Noel or Paulo's method at first, but it may not be any harder to perfect.
Once you have the path perfected, you may also convert the path into a Custom Shape. Then using the Shape Tool (U) you can drag and draw the shape to size. You can create a Shape Tool Library for the font. See the Help Files for details.
Another note about this font. The circles at the end of some of the letters are really circles.You can use this to your advantage when tuning up the letters.
That should be plenty to chew on top of what the others have already put on your plate.
Peace,
Lee

  • How to smooth edges of a layer in Illustrator?

    Okay, I'm not exactly sure how to phrase my question, but I'll do my best.
    Basically I have a drawing that was made in Photoshop and now I need to make it larger. However, it gets pixellated of course. Therefore I want to put it in Illustrator and make the edges smoother (it's basically four colors that do not blend, so each color is separate).
    Is there any fairly easy way to do this? I figure I could either smooth the edges or turn it into a vector. I know Photoshop and InDesign, but I haven't used Illustrator at all, so I have no idea how to do this.
    Sorry if I wasn't clear on something, please let me know. Thank you very much!

    You can also make a path/paths out of your layer/selection in Photoshop and copy to Illie.
    It will probably be more accurate that way if you handle it right.
    Once you have pasted a path into Illie it becomes an "Object" (Illiespeak) on a layer. Illie's layers can hold many objects.
    Now all you have to do is colour it (Color ans Swatches palettes).

  • Aperture 3 smoothing edges of a jpg that consists of text

    I have typed some text in keynote and exported as a jpg.  Now I want to print the image without the sharp step like edges on the letters.  Does anyone know how to adjust the image to create smooth edges on a photo that is just lettering?

    The above question was typed into Keynote and exported as a JPG. I've never seen it produce Jaggies, was it a custom font?
    However, if you do end up with jaggies, the only thing I can think of in Aperture is the blur brush.
    Select the blur brush. In the brush size pallet, set strength to full then use the gear icon and chose 'Apply to entire image'. Then use the 'Amount' slider in the adjustment brick to carefully blur just enough of the jaggies to reduce their impact without making the whole text look blurred.

  • Smooth edges - GIF animation

    Hello there!
    Sorry if another theme about my question already exists in the forum...
    I'm using PS CS4 and trying to Save for Web & Devices an GIF transparent animation, but I need it to be with smooth edges. I tried to add different type dither to the transparency but I don't like the result at all.
    Any idea how to make the animation with PERFECT SMOOTH edges?
    I'll be realy thankful and appreciate your help
    All the best!
    chkrov

    Its hard to get a true anti-aliased edge using the gif format, simply because it only offers a single color that can be used as the transparency. If at all possible you are better off using the png format and before anyone says that you can not use png for an animation, think again. Take a look at some of the examples on the net for creating rollovers using javascript.  It is the same principle used for game sprites.
    Example:
    If the image is to be 100x100px and the animation is 10 frames, then the original image should be 1000px wide x 100px high containing all of the images in the same document. On the web page the first frame is visible at 100x100 hiding the remaining part of the document. Then the next frame is visible by moving the image. And so on.
    Anyway, its better to look at some examples on the web at it probably would make more sense than what I am trying to explain.
    Just an idea...

  • How to smooth pixelated edges of Rounded Rectangle Filter?

    I'm using the rounded rectangle filter to divide the frame into about 25 pieces (a mosaic type of transition is what Im going for) and I like the look of the round rectangle but the four corners are terribly pixelated. Is this just an oversight on the part of the programs developers or is there a setting I am over looking?
    Thanks Mac People,
    Justin!

    Hey Jim,
    I am seeing the pixelation on my monitor. The oval shape filters work just fine, and thats what has me scratching my head.
    Also, i have my Filmo figured out, except for the dial one the viewfinder that changes the size of the frame in side it. Do those numbers correlate with different size lenses? Do you have any suggestions and what lenses I should look into and where to find them. Theere is only one on the camera as is, a very small one about the size of a golf ball.
    Thanks again Jim,

  • How to smooth lines of original oil painting

    I had an artist paint an oil painting (on canvas) of our wedding venue to use as part of our wedding invitation. However, I didn't realize how an oil painting would print on paper and the brush strokes are nonuniform and visible. How can I smooth out the brush strokes?

    50mm will be fine.  I expect its sweet spot will be around f8
    Align the lens axis with the center of the image and perpendicular to the image.
    If the sun is bright, find some shade.  In fact find some shade anyway.
    Use a tripod
    Take a test image with a sheet of white paper in front to the painting to set white balance to in Photoshop. But try to take the image well away from any brightly coloured surfaces that might reflect colour onto the painting.
    DO NOT USE FLASH
    Try and leave an inch or two of space around the painting.  This will help you square it up in Photoshop
    Later versions of Photoshop have a Perspective Crop tool that would let you correct any out of squareness of the photograph, but you can still do this with CS5
    Open the image, and make any adjustments like black and white point.
    Copy the background layer.
    Turn on the grid (Ctrl ')
    Free Transform (Ctrl t)
    Hold down the Ctrl key, and drag each corner in turn to align the edges to the grid to square it up.
    Crop out what is left.
    Sharpen for print (View at 60% and go by the preview)
    Be amazed by how much better it looks compared to the scanned version
    Have a great special day, and best wishes to your SO

  • How to smooth text when using 720p HDTV as monitor?

    I know I'm not using the best choice for a Monitor, but want to tweak it the best I can.
    Sony Bravia BX 320, 720P TV as my monitor
    New Mac Mini bought yesterday
    1080P Display Setting in Mini's display profiles
    720P ibid
    Connected via HDMI
    Have tried tweaking around with different Mac Display profiles and color calibrations. Above look the best as far as resolution and picture when sitting far away from screen.
    Closer I get to screen, the more pixelated and crappy the text looks, which is really bad
    What are the tweakablle settings, both in the monitor and computer I would want to play with to smooth the text out as best as is possible given my monitor choice?
    What would be a better "TV" choice to use as a monitor for my Mini? I only run a Roku and OTA HDTV into the TV tuner.
    Is there a choice that looks good in both TV and Mini monitoring applications?
    Thanks so much.

    I have never used any of this, I have never needed to use it. I just know that the information is around and has been useful to others.
    I also saved this tutoial that I found once. Perhaps it can help you;
    SwitchResX Tutorial
    0. All of this is easier to do if you have a portable Mac, since you can configure the external display while viewing everything on the built-in display. You can do it with only the external display (your big TV, that is), but it's tedious.
    1. Get the proper cable to connect your Mac to the display (VGI, DVI, or DVI->HDMI, depending on your display's inputs; if you're using a portable Mac with only mini-DVI you'll need the adapter *and* a cable).
    2. Connect the display and turn on the Mac. Launch the SwitchResX Control application (if all you're doing is setting up a custom configuration, you don't need the preference pane and thus don't need APE either).
    3. In the SwitchResX Control application, select the display you want to configure in the "Settings of:" menu (if it isn't selected already) and click the "Display" tab. Then click the "Export DDC" button and select a location to save the file.
    4. Using the text editor of your choice (TextEdit works, or you may have a preference for something else) open that file you just exported. You should see at least one Monitor Description Block (mine has two, labeled Descriptor #0 and Descriptor #1). This should give you a starting point. Mine looks like this:
    Code:
        Descriptor #0 is Timing definition:
        Mode = 1920 x 540 @  60Hz
            H. Active...............1920 pixels
            H. Blanking.............280 pixels
            V. Active...............540 lines
            V. Blanking.............22 lines
            HSync Offset............88 pixels
            HSync Pulse Width.......44 pixels
            VSync Offset............2 lines
            VSync Pulse Width.......5 lines
            Pixel Clock.............74.25MHz
            Horizontal freq.........33.75kHz
            Vertical freq...........60.05Hz
            H Image Size............16mm
            V Image Size............9mm
            H Border................0 pixels
            V Border................0 lines
                Interlaced
                Sync: Digital separate with
                    * Positive vertical polarity
                    * Positive horizontal polarity
    Note that the Mode is described as 1920 x 540 @ 60Hz, interlaced. It's actually 1920 x 1080, interlaced. I'm not sure why the vertical resolution is half what it should be there, but that's an important detail to note. If yours looks like it's half what it should be, you'll have to double it below. Use your common sense here.
    The next step depends on what problem you need to solve. If you have a picture and you just need to adjust its position and/or size, you have the easier task and these instructions can help you. If you don't have a picture at all, the values provided by your display are invalid, and you'll have to do some research to find valid values (I can't help you find them). Search and/or ask on this forum, and also try Google.
    5. Click on the "Custom" tab in the SwitchResX Control app. Click the "+" button to create a new resolution. Select "Custom" in the menu at the top (as opposed to "Scaled"). Start by entering the values in the Monitor Description Block you exported and opened in a text editor. The thing to realize as you get started is that all the numbers interact with each other, and as you change one value the application will recalculate the others if they're affected by the change. At a given resolution, the number of horizontal pixels and the number of vertical lines in each box always have to add to the same totals, and you can get those values by adding the "Active" and "Blanking" values in the Monitor Timing Block. To stick with my display, the horizontal pixel values must add up to 2200 (1920 (H. Active) + 280 (H. Blanking)), and the vertical line values must add up to 1124 (2 * (540 (V. Active) + 22 (V. Blanking))). The horizontal and vertical scan rates are calculated using those total values and the pixel clock value.
    This is a very important concept to understand. With a constant pixel clock value and constant totals of Active + Blanking in both axes, the scan rates should also remain constant. If you have changed your active, porch, or sync width values and the scan rates don't add up, you won't get any picture. To use my display as an example again:
    Code:
    Pixel Clock 74.25 Mhz, Interlaced
                Horizontal      Vertical
    Active:     1920 pixels     1080 lines
    Frt. porch: 88 pixels       4 lines
    Sync width: 44 pixels       10 lines
    Back porch: 148 pixels      30 lines
    Scan rate:  33.75 kHz       60.05 Hz
    Note that 1920 + 88 + 44 + 148 = 2200, and 1080 + 4 + 10 + 30 = 1124.
    6a. Adjust the values to fit your display (heh). This is the trial-and-error portion of the task, and is also slightly counterintuitive. You can get an idea of the adjustments you need to make if you use DisplayConfigX to display an "Image Size Test" (in the "Test Screen" tab). It'd make life easier if that were built into SwitchResX, but anyway:
    If you need to shrink the visible area, decrease the Active value and increase the front or back porch values by the same amount. If you need to increase it, do the opposite. It helps to work incrementally (say, by multiples of 8) and save and test your work as you go along. Note that you may not actually need to restart the computer: I found that I could just unplug the HDMI cable from the back of my display and plug it back in, and the new settings would take effect. Remember to click "OK" (and not "Cancel") in the Timing Parameters window, then "Apply" in the main window, before you do this, or before you reboot. Otherwise your changes will be lost.
    The porch values are counterintuitive. The horizontal "front porch" is the right edge of the screen (not the left as you might expect); the vertical "front porch" is the bottom edge of the screen. To move the image to the right, decrease the horizontal front porch and increase the horizontal back porch; to move it to the left increase the front porch and decrease the back porch. To move the image up, increase the vertical front porch and decrease the back porch, to move it down, decrease the front porch and increase the back porch. Again, it helps to save and restart or disconnect/reconnect the display to test these adjustments. The "Quick change" buttons in the bottom right-hand corner of the Timing Parameters window will adjust the porches for you, but note that in older versions the buttons were reversed (down means up and left means right, if you catch my drift). That's been fixed in version 3.7.6, apparently.
    Also, remember as you adjust porch values that you shouldn't ever need to change the sync width.
    6b. You know how I said you might not need to restart the computer? That's not actually 100% true for some displays. When I boot my computer with the display connected, the image is shifted to one side. If I subsequently change resolutions in software or disconnect and reconnect the display, the image will shift back. I got around this problem by first coming up with a configuration that was properly aligned after such a switch. After I had that I rebooted and estimated how far the image was shifted to one side. I then adjusted the porch values, saved, rebooted, and tested again. I now have two configurations, one for "fresh boot" that's adjusted for that sideways shift, and one I can use if I've changed the resolution for some reason. After all that, my default settings are now:
    Code:
    Pixel Clock 74.25 Mhz, Interlaced
                Horizontal      Vertical
    Active:     1834 pixels     1024 lines
    Frt. porch: 120 pixels      40 lines
    Sync width: 44 pixels       10 lines
    Back porch: 202 pixels      50 lines
    Scan rate:  33.75 kHz       60.05 Hz
    Again, 1834 + 120 + 44 + 202 = 2200, and 1024 + 40 + 10 + 50 = 1124. The Pixel Clock and both scan rates are the same as I found in the DDC.
    Note also that if you have the same sideways shift problem, your two resolutions can't be identical (the system won't know which one to select). I made mine different by two pixels of horizontal resolution, which turns out to be rounded off in practice anyway (so one's 1832 x 1024, and the other's 1834 x 1024, with porch values adjusted accordingly, but they both look the same).
    At this point you should be able to align your desktop to your display by iterating through these steps, applying your changes, and either disconnecting and reconnecting the display or rebooting.
    7. If ever you go horribly wrong and go from having a misaligned picture to having no picture at all, you'll have to delete the override installed by SwitchResX. Boot the computer into Safe Mode, launch the SwitchResX Control app again, and click the "Factory settings" button, then the "Apply" button, and reboot.
    And as a preemptive strike: no, I probably don't own your display and don't know the numbers for it offhand, and my consulting rate is $45/hr (really!).

  • How to smooth out discontinuous spacial distribution gradients

    Hi all.
    I'm controlling a linear motion device, and need to generate displacement paths for it to obey. What I'd like is to smooth out the 'sharp edges' in my profile data (for example, at points where it may go from a slow forward motion to a faster forward motion). Technically, this is removing the discontinuities in the spacial distribution differential, but in other words all I need to do is "smooth my data".
    I've mimicked what I want to achieve by putting some hand-created numbers into this graph -->
    The yellow line is my original profile data. You can see that I'll be moving the device from position 45 at time 0 to position 52 at time 5 and finally position 53 at time 9. This is fine, but I'd like to smooth out the motion a bit and avoid that nasty elbow at time=5 a bit.
    The blue line is what I'd like. A smooth run from position 46 at time 0 to position 53 at 9 seconds, that preserves the velocities (gradients of the profile line) at the beginning and end. The reason for this is that the motor will arrive at position 46 (time 0) at the velocity inferred by the first gradient, and will continue beyond position 53 after time=9 at the speed inferred by the end gradient. Therefore I must not change the gradients of the line at the beginning and end.
    I've tried using the many Signal Filtering techniques LabVIEW has available, but I've found that they create problems:
    1. They don't preserve the beginning and end gradients, and
    2. They tend not to like the very few sample points I have here. (If I interpolote the yellow line to create intermediate points, the filtering works better, but still suffers from point 1)
    I've tried using the B-Spline curve fit, but that seems also not to respect the gradients.
    I've tried the cubic spline fit, but that doesn't return the extra points I need to create the blue curve the way I've shown here.
    Does anyone have any advice? I thought this would be simple, but I'm a bit stuck now but I suspect that there'll be someone out there that's had to do this too.Naively I expected there to be a simple function called "Smooth Data", but clealy not.
    Many thanks in advance for any responses received.

    In my copy of Haliday Resnick and Walker there was a note that talked about Einstein and "working in divine issolation" where he was not distracted by others telling what was leagl and what wasn't. I recall that note when I propose idea like the following that some math type will tell me has not physical meaning and dismiss it off-hand. But since I don't limit myself to what is allowed or legal...
    See this thread starting a post #5.
    Summary:
    CC's best attempt at smoothing the curve was shown in this plot.
    Using my non-legal technique, I got these results.
     I a nutshell:
    When yo ufilter you loose data at the front and back-end with the number of points of data loss being determined by the order of the filer. By first pre-pending and appending the same data set reflected about the first and last point, we trick math into telling us what it woudl refuse to tell us otherwise.

  • How to "smooth in" a gaussian blur fx?

    Hi there
        I would like to know how can I "smooth in" a gaussian blur fx. I recorded a video and needed to add a tittle to
    the video and when I add the fx it doesn't fade in smoothly it's like ON and then OFF. Is there a way to make it like
    fade in/out a few frames? I'm a novice to FCX growing out of iMovie because needed more finer and powerful
    adjustments but still need lots to learn compared to iMovie!!! Any help would be VERY welcomed!!!
    THANKS ALL!!!
    Serge
    PS I have 10.0.9 for FCX

    IIt sounds like you want to keyframe the blur to ramp it up. Set a keyframe, button next to the value box, and set the slider to zero. Move later in time where you want the blur to finish increasing and set the slider value to whatever you want. The additional keyframe will be added automatically.

  • Best way to smooth edges

    Lets say I have a picture of a person and I want to extract him from the background;
    I have tried using the various tools (magic wand, magic selector, etc) and I am getting better.
    But, there is always a lot of fine tuning I have to do to get a sharp edge of the subject as none of the tool cleanly and crisply extyract the person all of the time (at least with my simplistic understanding of PSE).
    I remember seeing a technique of taking an extracted image and then cutting off a few pixels around all the edges thus giving a smooth extraction (the edges are all sharp).
    Can you all provide me with your technique that I promise I will save so I dont have to re-ask you the same stupid question.
    Also, I have been all over the net looking for sites that provide good videos for tutorials. (the written read tutorials althoug are good, are not as easy to understand than a good video showing mouse movements etc).

    Paradoxically, when extracting people from backgrounds, a sharp edge is exactly what you do not want. For the extracted person to blend into the new background, you want to 'feather' the selection. Here's one workflow:
    -- Copy your original image to a new layer and do all the subsequent operations on the copy
    -- Use whatever tools you want to make the selection (the selection brush in Elements is great for fine tuning -- its almost the equivalent of the quick-mask tool in Photoshop). Save the selection in case you have to restart (Select>Save)
    -- Go to Select>Modify>Contract and enter a low number in the pixels field (1 is a good place to start)
    -- Go to Select>Feather and enter a low number (1 is a good place to start)
    -- Press cntl-shift-i to invert the selection (you now have everything EXCEPT the person selected
    -- Hit delete. You should now have just the person, with a feathered edge.
    -- Put your new background on a layer below the layer with the person on it and Bob's your uncle (no, not me, some other, probably English, Bob)

  • Scrubbing timeline with slider - how to smooth it out?

    I've created a simple slider to scrub through some frames of a MC named states.  Each frame has the same MC (states) just in a different color.
    I've setup the slider using
    slider.setSize(200,1);
    slider.maximum=states.totalFrames;
    slider.liveDragging=true;
    slider.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE,updatemc);
    function updatemc(e:Event){
        states.gotoAndStop(slider.value);
    I'd like the trainsition from one frame to the next to be smooth so that there is no blunt change when the frames change.  I can easily add a shapetween between frames which creates the smooth transition I am looking for but, I only want the slider to stop on the 5 main frames.  Can someone suggest how I'd accomplish this either through a code mod. or something on the timeline?
    Thanks in advance,
    Josh

    Can you view this?

    I found out how to set my snap interval which helps.  I just need to smooth out the transition.  Hmm..  Something tells me I should not be doing this on the timeline but in my code.
    slider.setSize(200,1);
    slider.maximum=15;
    slider.liveDragging=true;
    slider.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE,updatemc);
    function updatemc(e:Event){
        states.gotoAndStop(slider.value);
        trace(slider.value);
    stop();
    var month:Array = ["December","January"];
    var day:Array = ["Monday","Tuesday","Wednesday","Thursday"];
    var date:Array=[10,11,12,13];
    datetext.text=day[1];

  • How to smooth out zooming/scrolling image that jerks (CS4)?

    Hi guys/girls,
    Is there any way that i can smooth out images that zoom in/out with normal classic tween. they are so jittery it looks terrible. I even have a little bit of easing and frames per second set to 30.
    any info much appreciated!

    Hi flashfever,
    thanks for responding. can you elaborate on how i can use that? is it AS for the 1st frame or on the movie clip itself? etc
    in this case, i have the image fading in and enlarging from 70% to 100% in the same tween. its very jerky.
    thanks for your help so far!

  • How to make edges of rollover button straight

    I was using rollover pjc in my forms....
    I am setting these properties of the buttons...
    --> setting the 'label' property to [ROLLOVER]add
    --> setting 'implementation class' property to
    'oracle.forms.demos.enhancedItems.RolloverButton'
    My rollover buttons are dislayed with rounded edges....
    I want to make the edges of my rollover buttons
    straight(like sqaure edges). please let me know how do i do that.
    Thanks in advance

    Judging by the source code of RolloverButton.java, it looks like that demo will always use rounded buttons.
    If you want normal shaped buttons, then you should modify RolloverButton.java or create your own Java class based on it and change it. The change should be to not use setLeftmost(true) and setRightmost(true). By setting them to true you are telling the button to treat the button as if it's the leftmost or rightmost button, which will round that end (or both).

  • How to smoothly scale movieclip while moving it towards viewer?

    Hi,
    I have a movieclip (mstone) depicting a signpost, which is within another movieclip (graphic1). I am trying to scale mstone to increase by about 44%, and it needs to move along the screen in such as manner that it is moving towards the user. Some how the scale and the x,y coordinates I am providing don't seem to reflect the same way as it normally would, when I see the website live.
    Is there a smooth way to move the clip, without specifying particular x,y co-ordinates?? I am using the _xscale, _yscale, _x and _y properties. Not producing the desired effect.
    Any suggestions on a better way to approach this???
    Thanks

    No, I am doing all the scaling and moving withing the onLoadProgress. Since I am using ActionScript 2, not using any classes...would get too complicated for me...
    Code is something like this:
    ldrlistener.onLoadProgress = function(_mc:MovieClip, loaded:Number, total:Number) {
    var prcnt:Number = Math.floor( ( loaded/total ) * 100 );
    _root.ldrgraphic.mstone._width = 507.5;
    _root.ldrgraphic.mstone._height = 228.1;
    _root.ldrgraphic.mstone._x = 0;
    _root.ldrgraphic.mstone._y = 0;
    if(prcnt==90) {          // for 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on
    trace("loading:90");
    _root.ldgraphic.mstone._xscale += 4.4;
    _root.ldgraphic.mstone._yscale += 4.4;
    _root.ldgraphic.mstone._x = -254;
    _root.ldgraphic.mstone._y = -56;
    _root.ldgraphic.mstone.pertext.text = "10 meters";
