How to solve ghost-volumes of an airport extreme connected hdd?

Hi.
I use an airport extreme (latest firmware, airport utility 5.6, Lion 10.7.5) to connect to a usb drive (HFS+ format).
Also tried different authentification options (account, airport password) - all with the same problem.
I start the mac and see this in my terminal:
xy-Computer:Volumes "UserName"$ ls
Macintosh HD                                   HD
HD-1                               MobileBackups
I have a duplicate Volumes now which I can access as follows:
HD is empty but in physically on the usb hdd.
HD-1 is pointing to the physical content on HD - which messes up my configuration of software who need access to /Volumes/HD/Shared/
This workaround fixes the ghost folder:
I disconnect aiport
I delete the folder HD
sudo rm -rf HD
(HD-1 , the ghost folder cannot be deleted by the way
HD-1/: resource busy
> Now I connect again and only the real folder and everything works again:
My-Computer:Volumes "My"$      ls
Macintosh HD                 HD
MobileBackups
What is this problem - how can I get rid of it?
It happens every day and deleting and stuff really is no fun. Is there a permanent solution?
I found an answer related to my topic on the internet but even as it explains something, it doesn't solve the prob.
http://superuser.com/questions/20879/how-to-remove-duplicate-ghost-network-drive -on-os-x
Mac OS X mounts drives by default by creating a folder with the name of the drive in /Volumes and then mounting it at that point (so a drive is normally accessible via /Volumes/NAME_OF_DRIVE). Mac OS X will append a -# after the name of a hard drive if multiple drives of that name are mounted. (eg. /Volumes/NAME_OF_DRIVE-1 and /Volumes/NAME_OF_DRIVE-2, etc.) This will also occur if a folder exists in /Volumes/ by that same name. Even though the mount point has a different name the name of the drive will show correctly in the Finder.
An example of what can cause an erroneous folder:
A script or application that writes a file to /Volumes/ExternalDrive/somefile.txt or even an application that when checking if a file exists (eg. open last saved document) creates a new document at that location when the hard drive/network share/USB key/etc. is not mounted. The file will exists at /Volumes/ExternalDrive/somefile.txt meaning the folder /Volumes/ExternalDrive will exist when you next mount.
Fixing this:
Ensure all drives have been unmounted - use Disk Utility or diskutil list to be sure
Check to see what can be seen in /Volumes/ - recommended to use the Terminal and use ls -laF /Volumes. There should only be one folder (NAME_OF_STARTUP_DRIVE -> /)
Delete the remaining folders. (I'd recommend checking the contents first)
Yes, there is an application I use which checks if a folder exists (not particulary a file). It connects to /Volumes/HD/Shared/ and tries to create the folders there if they don't exist. If it is started before the airport usb drive is accessed, ghost folders problem occures.
Any advice?

Update.
I use the airport drive now as supposed to.
But after going to sleep (drive or macbook - can't say for sure) opening the aiport drive appears to work, it connects and is readable. When I then try to write something, an error message appears:
some text -50
Can't write on the disc. Then I have to disconnect and connect agaiin or reboot.
Strange, isn't it? It seems like a drop out or permission problem of the airport extreme station. I use a network lan, no wifi.

Mmm, generally you don't need to do much port mapping in an extreme. Not sure I understand you.  What does the d-link do?

  • How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express

How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express?

You have to make sure that the AirPort Express is in Factory Default Settings. If it is straight out of the box, it is ready to be configured.
The instructions that I will provide are for using AirPort Utility 6.0, which you have.
Locate the Express in the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the configuration. Power it up and allow a full minute for the Express to display a blinking amber light.
Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac
Open AirPort Utility 6.0 and look at the small rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the display. It should now read something like "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on the rectangle, and then click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx listing
AirPort Utility will take a minute or two to analyze the settings on your network and then suggest that  the Express be configured to "Extend" your wireless network.
Edit the Base Station name to your liking, then click Next in the lower right hand corner
Allow a full minute or two let AirPort Utility do its work
When you see Setup Complete, click Done at the lower right of the window.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
    You should be in business.

  • How to set up Guest Network, while Airport Extreme is connected to Satellite Receiver

How to set up Guest Network, while Airport Extreme is connected to Satellite Receiver?

Depending on how you have your AirPort Extreme configured to work with the satellite receiver, it may or may not be possible to enable the Guest Network function.
We will need to check some settings on your Mac or PC, but in order to do that, we need to know what operating system you are using on your computer.
If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the computer screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

  • How can I configure my first gen Airport extreme?

does anyone know how I can configure my 1st Gen Airport Extreme with my latest Airport Utility? Or is there another way?

A 1st Generation AirPort Extreme is model number A1143.  Please check on the bottom of your device to confirm that you have this model number.
A1143 can be configured using the latest version of AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion OS X (10.8.4).
If you don't see model A1143......you do not have a 1st Generation AirPort Extreme. What model number do you see?

  • Airport Extreme + USB HDD = Time Capsule?

    Hi!
(Sorry for my poor English, I hope it's possible to understand my problem/question).
I bought a MacBook in January 09. It's connected to the Internet via WLAN and a Fritz.Box (Wireless Router with built-in DSL Modem, unfortunately it uses the old slow LAN and WLAN protocol and a USB1-Port).
I want to backup my files with Time Machine via WLAN. I tried to connect a USB-Drive to my Fritz.Box but it was terribly slow (USB1...)
It's important, that the backups go automatically when I'm at home and connected to my WLAN.
Now I think of buying something that's more useful. I have three ideas and I'm not sure what to do...
    1) Buying the Time Capsule. Pro: I think, it will work perfectly. I don't need to worry about a thing. Contra: It's terribly expensive. In Germany 1TB will cost about 600$. (Maybe I should buy the 500GB-Version and update it by myself to 1GB or 2GB).
    2) Buying the Airport Extreme. Unfortunately I'm not sure if a Airport Extreme + USB-HDD is the same as the Time Capsule. Apple writes: "Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard can be used to back up to many kinds of Mac OS Extended-formatted drives, but you cannot choose AirPort Extreme's AirPort Disk as a Time Machine backup volume. " On the other hand some Users wrote that they managed to get their TM-Backup on a AE-HDD (but did this work via WLAN?). With the Airport Extreme it would be easy to manage a itunes-stream-server (the Airport Express is not too expensive). And the Airport Extreme isn't too expensive as well.
    3) Using a Network-HDD. It would be not too good, since I had to use my slow WLAN-Connection and since this wouldn't be supported by Apple at all. On the other hand this would be the least expensive version.
What should I do? Is it possible to work with the Airport Extreme and an external USB-HDD via WLAN and without any problems (like mounting the drive manually each time I connect to my Network).
It would be much more fun, if everything ran automatically, when I got in reach of my Network...
    Thanks in advance! Gerrit

    A couple of pointers.
The hard drive must be specifically formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme's USB port. Check the documentation that came with the drive to find out how it is formatted at the present time.....it is likely formatted to work with Windows, which is not compatible with the AirPort Extreme.
Unfortunately, even if the drive is formatted correctly, Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so that will be the next hurdle to deal with.
Some users actually do seem to be able to make this work, but overall, it is not a reliable method to backup your data if it is important to you.

  • My house has a wired ethernet to many rooms.  Can I have my imac connected via ethernet (then to router via comcast cable modem) and also have my airport extreme connected to another outlet?

Not experianced in networking.  Current working setup is wireless network with airport extreme.  Having problems with signal so may need to expand network with another airport. My house has a wired ethernet to most rooms.  What is the best approach to maintain wireless network and also use ethernet wired connections where convienient?

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • I wanted to know whether i can diffuse music to the bluetooth only speakers from a airport extreme-connected hard drive through my mac?

I'm interested in the new soundlink mini Bose wireless speakers that function only via bluetooth. I wanted to diffuse music to them from an airport extreme connected hard drive through my macbook air. I don't want to stoc music on my mac given the limited flash drive and don't want to go though wires again. Is that possible? Also I can't go with airport express since those speakers don't have the airplay function.

  • Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme..

Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

  • Can you have two airport extreme connected in the same network?

You can have two airport extreme connected at the same time in a network?
like if you have a modem, you can connect two airport extreme in that modem?

You can have two airport extreme connected at the same time in a network?
    Yes
like if you have a modem, you can connect two airport extreme in that modem?
    Airport Extreme
You should plan to connect one AirPort Extreme to the modem and the second AirPort Extreme to the first. The first Extreme will connect to the modem using an Ethernet cable. The second Extreme can connect to the first also using an Ethernet cable, or it can connect using wireless only.

  • Airport extreme connect to my wifi router (wep 128bits) but no extend

    hello,
as i said, my airport extreme connect to my router, get an ip by DHCP, say it's connected to my network but it's say it can't extend the network.
when i launch the airport utility on a computer connected to my router it discover the airport extreme but can't configure it (get error 10057), but it see the airport extreme, this mean it's connected to my lan...so why it can't extend the wifi network ? an idea ??
    best regards

    Yes, even an Airport Express....
    Extreme
    Express
    Time Capsule
    See this Apple document:

Must be Apple Airport devices in order to extend a wireless signal.

  • How to Plug an external HD to Airport Extreme (PC) ! Finally got it right !

    Hi All,
I have, like a lot of you, spent hours reading posts, trying stuff and downloading 3rd party softwares to get something that is described as "Plug your HD and Et voila !" by our friends of Apple... i.e. get a HD to be recognized on a PC when plugged to a Airport Extreme.
The solution is as follows (and which is simple when you know where to get the info):
    - Format your HD in Fat 32. Yeah right you will say "Great but how ? as my PC does not allow me to format in FAT 32 only in exFAT or NTFS"
    - Don't bother with SwissKnife (doesn t work on Visate and 7) or other software or freeware, go for the big guns straight away : Seagate.
    - Go to seagate website and download Seagate DiscWizard. This software will allow you to format in FAt 32 a HD up to 2To (I would believe that it formats any HD but I only tried with my Seagate 1To). Seagate even shows you how to format in FAT32 on their website
    - Then plug your HD to the Airport Extreme, et voila ! (for real !)
And BTW you don t need to be a Geek to do this, I am far from one...
    Enjoy
PS: Any of you who knows how to solve the pink screen with the Apple TV 2, please help...(buying a new TV does not count)
PS1: Airport Extreme + HD = does not show on Apple TV without computer on (which is a pain and I know we are a lot to think it should work..)

PS1: Airport Extreme + HD = does not show on Apple TV without computer on (which is a pain and I know we are a lot to think it should work..)
That is because the Apple TV (all generations) relies on iTunes for streaming. However, if you have the earlier versions of the Apple TV, you can also store your iTunes Library on its internal hard drive and not require a computer to get its content to your TV.

  • How do I configure port forwarding on Airport Extreme via Win 7/64?

    Hello all,
I'm trying to forward some ports in order to correct issues with setting up servers for video games, i.e. I can connect but another can't while yet another can connect fine, etc. So far, despite thorough Google searching, I have not been able to find a solution that matches my exact problem.
The specific ports I want to forward are 7777 and 25565. Currently, my connection is through Northstate Communications using an ADSL modem/router (Zhone Model No. 6218-I2-200-0NS) hooked up to an Airport Express + Time Capsule (Model No. A1254, version 7.5.2). As far as I know, the only reason the Airport Extreme is there is for the time capsule, but I don't know for sure whether my computer is actually connecting to the internet through one or through the other. I didn't set it up originally, unfortunately.
I currently can't edit the settings for the Zhone. Supposedly, typing 192.0.0.1 into the address bar of my web browser should open the router configuration utility, but instead it returns "Oops! Google Chrome could not find <address>." I can, however, use the AirPort Utility for Windows to edit all of the AirPort's settings. I have followed the instructions in this YouTube video to forward the port 7777 using the AirPort Utility: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFad6NvddRk but changes I make to Advanced/Port Mapping apparently do not work because www.whatsmyip.org and www.canyouseeme.org report that a test of port 7777 is either timing out or unavailable, respectively.
I am concerned that the IP address automatically provided for me when I create a new port mapping is not the correct IP address since it is 10.x.x.x, which I can't find anywhere in any settings on the computer or online. But, when I type in the IP address I get from www.whatsmyip.org (97.x.x.x) and then go back to edit the setting I created, it has apparently reverted to 10.x.x.x without saving the address I entered.
So, what am I doing wrong? Do I need to change some settings in the Zhone router before it will work, and if so, how can I access it? What is the 10.x.x.x address that the AirPort Utility assigns to new port mappings by default? Since I intend to use Hamachi to host the game server, do I need to use the IP address given to me by that program (5.x.x.x) instead? As far as I can determine, all my drivers are up to date. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Other system specs given below:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.00 GHz
    MB: MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD
    RAM: Corsair Dominator 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (PC3 12800)
    Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1333 (PC3 10666)
    GPU:  Sapphire 100258-1GHDMI Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Wireless: AZiO AWD102N PCI Wireless Adapter
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
    -R

Thanks for your response. I attempted to do that, but I couldn't find any way to access the configuration for the Zhone router. Typing the IP address into my web browser's address bar only resulted in "page could not be found" or "page timed out", etc. I called tech support at Northstate, who likewise suggested that the Zhone router should be set to bridge mode and the AEBS set to router mode since it would be easier for me to configure the AirPort. After wrangling a bit with them over my inability to change any settings for the Zhone, they sent a technician over. He messed around with the Zhone, apparently putting it in bridge mode, and we managed to get the AirPort to work without any double NAT errors. I reset the AirPort and created a new configuration file. Unfortunately, when I went to the Advanced/Port Mapping menu and repeated the original steps to forward port 7777, tests at www.whatsmyip.org still returned "timed out". The technician said he wasn't knowledgable enough about Apple products to assist me any further and suggested I call their tech support or visit the nearest Genius Bar. So that's about it. Any other ideas?
