HP 4250 Photosmart via USB port of Airport Express with OS10.6.8

I cannot see the printer as a network printer.  I have updated the appropriate drivers for this printer for OS10.6.x.  I have gone through the Airport Express Utility troubleshooting such as restarting printer and Airport, deleting and re-adding printer, updating Airport firmware, etc.  Printer works fine with direct connection to same computer.  How do I get my system to recognize the printer location and connect via the Airport?

I know this is an older post, but wanted to provide some assistance if still needed.
It looks like this should work.  Review the steps in this document from HP just in case anything may have been missed.

  • Can you connect VIA USB port on Airport Express?

I have a Airport Express and have the ethernet port used already. Is is possible to use the USB port to hard wire a computer to the Express? I know it meant for a printer but dont need it for that use.

Sorry, but no. The USB port on the AirPort Express is designed to only support USB printers.

Can I connect a Vonage / Basic Talk pjone to the USB port on Airport Express that is connected to a cable modem?

No: Uses for the USB port of Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express

  • How much power can deliver the USB port on AirPort Express?

I am developing an appliance that requieres access to a WiFi router and a power source (UL 60950-1 compliant) of less than one watt (100-200 mA @ 3.3V) to power my own WiFi device, and the AirPort Express can be the right device to solve both problems with minimun overhead. The problem is that I cannot find the specification of the current / power limits of its USB port.
To check if it can provide the usual five unit loads, I tried to charge an iPhone 4, but it fails showing the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory", and an external 2.5" HD which requires 500 mA causes the following message to appear on AirPort Utility:
    USB Power
A device connected to this AirPort base station's USB port requires more power than this AirPort base station can provide. Plug the device into a power supply if possible, or connect it to a powered USB hub.
    Any insight will be welcome.

Never mind - I tried "rebooting". I hate it how that always works!

  • USB Port On Airport Express

Is this usb port just for printers, or can any device be used on it (eg ipod, usb pen drive ect...)
also can usb hubs be used on it for either printers or any of the devices above
    thanx for your help

It's limited to a single printer or a remote control unit (Keyspan Express Remote). You can connect both a printer and the remote control unit to it through a hub.

  • USB printer on Airport Express via Bonjour: print queue no longer works

This is a variation of similar postings on this forum, but hopefully provides more information to allow others to pinpoint the problem.
Have been using Intel iMac 10.4.8 now upgraded to 10.4.10. Two printers attached: 1 via USB and a 2nd via USB/Bonjour on Airport Express. Both working flawlessly. 2 days ago, an ADSL Internet outage occurred. When this was reestablished an hour or so later, everything was back to normal, EXCEPT that the USB/Bonjour/Airport printer no longer works. When jobs are sent to it, the printer queue stops and a red "!" appears in the dock on the queue. Restarting the queue just brings back the red "!" again.
Have done all the usual things:
    1. Checked cables, restarted iMac, restarted printer, reset Airport.
    2. Have confirmed the printer works find if moved to a direct USB port. So the problem is not the printer.
    3. Have upgraded the Airport firmware to 6.3. Works just fine as a network access point. So the problem is not the Airport itself.
    4. Have deleted, added the printer, renamed the printer - none of these things helped (this was suggested by some postings on the forum)
    5. Have tried every combination of which item is powered up first (this was suggested by some postings on this forum)
Have confirmed (by checking CUPS Error Log, as well as by Internet Connection Diagnostics) that the problem is that the iMac can no longer connect to the printer when printing on the local host if it is connected via USB/Bonjour/Airport. However, it can find the printer for adding a printer during setup. So Bonjour is working, but the printing is not.
There are lots of similar postings of people having problems with printers previously working, but then stopping working on an Airport Expresss/Extreme. I hope the above scenario, which is a very simple network topology, and the fact that the iMac and printer and Airport all work correctly on their own, is of help. It does look as if the problem is in the Airport Extreme, and was triggered by the WAN outage, and not fixed by printer reinstallation or firmware upgrade.
Looking forward to someone with a clever suggestion...

What did you use to discover the printers on both Mac and PC. Did you use Bonjour for both?

  • All-in-One Photosmart C5180 not working correctly Airport Express

I am new at this so please bare with me.
Last night I installed all the software etc and hooked the printer up via usb into my airport express. I did all the instructions as instructed. As I began to use the HP software, it would not recognize the printer.
So to sum up I can print from like a website or print from iPhoto etc. However I cant use the HP software to scan copy etc. When I go through the printer recognition software it isnt found in the first menu it is not able to find the printer. I have tried USB and Network. What am I doing wrong? Is there a guide somewhere that is more indepth for setting up the airport expresses with a printer? The guide included etc isn't as in depth as I would have hoped for.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, of the multi-function printers, that are supported, they are supported for printing only...the "advanced" functions (scanning, copying, faxing, etc.) will not work.
Take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
o 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.

  • How do I make my printer more secure while connected via USB to my Airport?

So a neighbor (a friend, fortunately) accidentally installed my printer on her computer via the network (her computer showed it as a 'Bonjour' printer) and started printing stuff, even though my printer is connected to an encrypted Airport Extreme.
My printer (an old HP deskjet 5550) is connected via USB to my Airport Extreme, which has a WPA2 secure password protecting it. Also, the "Share this printer" box was unchecked in the printer utility.
The DSL lines for me and my 20 condo neighbors all convene in the basement somewhere into one or several master routers.
I'm concerned about this breach of security (obviously) and wondering about security of my iMac as well. The iMac is connected to the base station wirelessly and has the firewall set to 'Set access for specific services and apps'.
I figured if the Airport Extreme has the WPA2 password set (and no one else knows the password) that no one would be able to gain access to the printer that is wired to it, or the iMac that's wirelessly connected.
What am I missing? How did this happen? and what can I do to ensure my network isn't visible or vulnerable to my neighbors or others with bad intent?

are there settings in the airport utility that you can adjust to make it unshareable from the router?
The "bonjourness" of the access to your printer suggests that your firewall is probably doing its job.
If your DSL connection is connected to the WAN port on the AE then the folks on the DSL side of your set up should only be able to see things on your LAN that you've set for 'access from the internet'. e.g. allow access to my printer/disk/... from the internet.
For printers there's an airport utility setting 'share printers over ethernet WAN port' and 'advertise printers globally using bonjour'. How's that set?

  • Printer not working via usb connection to airport time capsule

I bought an airport time capsule 3 TB, and I wanted to connect my multifunctional printer-scaner "canon i-sensys MF4350d" via usb to my airport device. However, I found a problem. Although my printer working properly in direct connection via usb,not working when connected via usb to my airport time capsule. when I chose printer In nearby printer list this error apeared:"the software for this printer is currently unavailable please contact the manufacturer for latest version" when I chose add printer and chose the printer model this error apeared:"the printer information has not been acquired"
    devices:
    printer: canon i-sensys MF4350d
air port time capsule 3 TB
    macbook pro me664
osx mountain lion 10.8.5 (latest version)
printer software:canon UFR II ver 2.43(latest version for my printer)

Login to airport utility via Mac or windows pc. Look under connected usb devices and it should say your manufacturer for the printer. If not try rebooting both printer and router with them being plugged in or try different usb cable or port on printer.

  • New imac doesn't locate old imac hard drive via usb port

I have an old iMac from ~2006 that recently stopped reading the harddrive.  I pulled the HD out and connected it to my new imac via USB port but I can't locate it.  The HD spins/powers up so I know the connector is strong enough to supply power.  We connected it to my husband's PC and he can see that there is a harddrive but cannot see any files to read.  He even tried Catacombe to try to read files but it didn't work.  My first issue is how can I locate my HD on the new mac?  But the main issue is how can I pull data/pictures off of the old harddrive and import them to my new computer.  I don't hear any clicking sounds from the harddrive so it seems to be working.  I can't reformat it because I don't want to lose the pictures on it.  I don't need the old harddrive to work/write.  I just need to pull the information off of it.  TIA.

I was not familiar with catacombae , but now I am .
You have a problem with either a corrupt file system on the hd or a hardware problem with the hd.  I'd say try mounting in disk utility.  Try reparing filesystem on hd.  Try one of the disk repair utilities.  Some have a free trail that let's you know if they can do anything.  You pay to get the data.  Seek profession help.  Pay $$$.

  • Can I attach USB drive to Airport Express USB port

I would like to attach a USB drive to my Apple airport Express USB port so that I can back up my data on my MBP and have my music stored on it for playing back over Apple TV.
Is there any issues to doing this? As an example, how would I see the drive?
    thanks in advance.
    Adam

Well, you can certainly attach a USB drive to the port on the AirPort Express.....but nothing will happen if you do this....since the USB port on the Express will only support a compatible printer and Keyspan remote control.
You will need an AirPort Extreme if you want to attach a shared hard drive to the USB port.
