HP LaserJet 6L installation on new iMac

I just bought a new iMac. I am trying to install my existing HP LaserJet 6L which is connected to a Netgear mini print server (i.e. printer connected directly to network hub and not any PC). While the iMac sees the printer queue on the network it doesn't see the pinter selection itself like my other Win desktop and notebooks do. I was told I should add the printer using its fixed IP address and when I do that and select HP LasertJet 6L/Gutenprint (installed driver) I get garbage printed on papers. I am suspecting I need a new driver for my printer to work on the new iMac. I wanted to check if someone else ran into this before I reserach the driver and/or may have a different solution.

You have to select the Apple Laserwriter 6, I think it is. Play with that a little until you find the right one. I do not have the Apple drivers loaded, so can't help you with the right one.

  • How to connect an old HP LaserJet 5MP to a new iMac?

Having the worst trouble -- for starters, the printer isn't recognized in Printer Setup Utility, though HP's on-line notes tell me that 10.6.4 has everything it needs for this printer. If so, where on iMac should I see the driver file or whatever it's called?
The printer is connected (as before) by way of a router and Ethernet, but the connection also goes via an AsanteTalk box. That was added years ago when I had difficulty connecting my last iMac, a G5, and I'm wondering if it's the problem because it's AppleTalk related and now AppleTalk is no more.
Where to start!? Help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks . . . Fortes

It's taken me a week to get hold of the necessary cable but still no joy, though I now realise my comment above about the link is wrong -- I didn't know about USB to Parallel Printer Adapters or what they looked like. So the link above is fine. Using the new cable and discarding the AsanteTalk box, I connected directly to the iMac.
There seems to be two ways to adjust printer settings, first via Command-P where one can add a printer (I chose Protocol: HP Jetdirect-Socket, and Address: my IP address, but then, after some on-line back and forth, there's a message "Network host [my IP address] is busy." The other is the Printer Setup Utility which leads me to Printer List and "You have no printers available" plus some buttons. When I click the Add button I get the message "Printer Setup Utility quit unexpectedly", then clicking on Reopen takes me back to "You have no printers available."
What I'm not seeing is a list of printers or any mention of the HP LaserJet 5MP.

  • ATI driver installation issue with Windows Vista on Boot Camp (new iMac)

    I've just purchased a new 20" iMac with Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz.
Then I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on a Boot Camp partition.
Vista installation was eventless and worked nicely.
    Now the problem has begun...
I downloaded the latest ATI graphic card driver (Catalyst 7.7 for Vista 32) from the ATI website. The Catalyst software did not recognize the graphic card and installed nothing. I still have generic Microsoft standard VGA video adapter, which keeps me from playing any recent 3D games...
Someone please help me on this so that I can start playing Oblivion...

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
I still have to find a verification for this, but:
Aplle has up to now always used the Mobility versions of the ATI and NVIDIA graphics chips in the iMacs and MacBooks, MacBooks Pro.
I assume that the in the new imacs, they are also using the Mobility version of the Radeon 2400/2600.
The ATI drivers you can download from the ATI/AMD website are only suitable for the Desktop Radeons, NOT for the Mobility Radeons.
ATI/AMD does not provide drivers for the Mobility Radeons, but are refering to the Manufacturer of the Computer for Drivers, which is Apple.
Sorry to say, but it seems you have to wait for a new BootCamp version which you include Driver support of the new iMacs.
    Sorry
    Stefan

  • I bought a new iMac and am giving my old iMac to my brother.  I do not have my installation disk.  How do I erase all my information?

I recently bought a new iMac and am giving my old iMac to my brother.  I read up on how to erase my information before handing it over to my brother but they process included having my installation disk.  I do not have that disk.  I need to erase my information and upgrade the computer.

"Tiger Tiger burning bright ..." (sorry for the poetic diversion ...)
You can call Apple Customer Support, give them the serial number of the unit and pay $16 per disk to get new copies.  But they may not re-burn Tiger anymore.
If that is the case, you have to consider buying Tiger disks from an online store, or move up in the cat family.
Leopard disks only require PPC processors, and run $180 or so.  Apple *may* have some Leopard in stock if you call them.  Else you go online.
If the sysem has Intel processor, you can jump up to Snow Leopard, which is $29 in the Apple Online Store.

  • Connecting a 1994 HP Laserjet 4MP printer to my new iMac

Hello all. I just recently bought a new iMac, and I am having difficulty getting an older HP Laserjet 4MP printer to communicate properly with the iMac. I originally thought that I needed a parallel to usb cable, so I bought one of these, but the computer would work briefly for one print out and then fail to print again. I then read the printer's manual, and it indicates that if you are going to connect the printer to a macintosh computer you need to use a standard 8 pin localtalk cable. I still have my original localtalk cable from when I used to use this printer with an older powermac in the early 90s, but I cannot find on the internet, or in any stores, a female 8 pin to usb adapter.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what I might try, or perhaps recommend a place to purchase the correct adapter / cable? I really like this printer and it has been working great, so I hate to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for any replies you all have. If I cannot come up with a solution I might just buy a new printer.

    D. P.
I wouldn't bother with any 8 pin arrangement as that is putting a further complication in the chain.
The Keyspan USB to parallel adaptor cable is on this page.
    http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Parallel.spml
I have used this cable on three Mac OS's (10.2, 10.3 and10.5) without the need to load any driver for it. The Mac seems to know what it is.
However, if you can send a page to the printer with what you have, then I am unsure, if what you have is sufficient, or if the keyspan version somehow handles the Input/Output data transfer better.
I am reluctant to advise you buying this if it is not going to change anything without first investigating if the driver you are using is causing this one page then stop behaviour.
When you click in Print and Fax, highlight the HP and where is says Kind it may say
Generic postscript Printer, whereas it would be better if if said GutenPrint v5.13.
However I did not have to do anything to get this setting, Leopard just found it.
You could select the printer again, with it switched on and in the left hand panel, control click and choose Reset printing System, as this may reset the driver to GutenPrint.
If that fails to set it, click on *Open Print Queue* ... then Info, then click on Driver and select GutenPrint v5.13 from the list, and see how that goes.

I just bought a new iMac and am having troubles downloading creative cloud installer.  Its coming up with error 214 - I can't find any solutions for this.  Can anyone help me?  Im on mac OS 10.9.4

Meg81 error 214 indicates a download data validation error.  This means that the update you downloaded became corrupted likely during the download process.  I would recommend utilizing the suggestions listed in Error downloading Creative Cloud applications - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/error-downloading-cc-apps.html to attempt to improve the stability of your Internet connection.
You can also find information on how to review your download logs which may provide additional information regarding the failure of the download.

  • Installer hung -- M$ Office 2011 on my new iMac.

Hello, Totally new Mac newbie here.  I am trying to install M$ Office 2011 on my new iMac.
The installer process stopped on the "installation" step and said I needed to quit Safari and Firefox before it could continue.  I did quit those apps (at least I think I did.) But now the installer reamins in a loop not recognizing that they are gone ... telling me I need to quit them.
The installer also will not let me quit out of it.   So there it sits in a loop.  Help?!?!?

There must be a more "normal" Mac way to shut down an application than using the Activity Monitor.  Please tell how a normal Mac user would do this.
It's more likely an issue with the MS installer. I suspect something about it was preventing the other apps from quitting in a timely fashion. I think I'm a "normal Mac User" as I've used Macs exclusively since ~1989 and command q always works to quit a program.
I also used a lot of MS Office versions and continue to do so. However, I've learned their installers can be rather demanding of resources, so I'm always careful to close all open apps before running an MS installer.
You can probably find additional suggestions in Microsoft's Office for Mac community forums as well:

Transferring applications between machines will not work.  You need to install using installations files.  Uninstall and Try using the CS Cleaner Tool before installing.

Purchased a new iMac - installed CS5 CD - message - Installer failed to initialise....

You need to copy all the installer disc to the desktop, Folder by folder. for example, Copy the contents of Payloads folder on Disc 2 to payloads folder of Disc 1, Extension to extensions, etc
Then you will see the setup.app file on the Folder that you created on the desktop.
    Run that and check.

  • Installation SSSLLLOOWWWW on new iMac

I bought a new iMac today and the first thing that I'm doing is installing Leopard, which was included in the box.
First of all, the machine shut down during the consistency check. Not a restart, but completely shut itself off when it was about 4% completed. This is my 4th Mac, and that's never, ever happened before. Now it's running again, I let it do the entire consistency check and it's installing. It's taking FOREVER. Like an hour and a half as of right now and it's still going. When I upgraded to Tiger on mine and my wife's powerbooks, it took about 10 minutes.
I'm wondering, with the crash and the time it's taking to get this installed, did I get a lemon here? Is this normal? I've been using this machine for two hours now and am so far very unimpressed.

For some folks the leopard installation took a long time. I'm not sure why on your machine, but one thing I can suggest is to completely reset your computer and start over. This means resetting the PRAM and possibly the power management unit as well, and then formatting the drive completely and reinstalling leopard that way.
However, I'd wait first and see when the install finishes if there are any problems. Sometimes things just need to take their time, as was the case with Time Machine's first backup (mine took forever, but now runs smoothly and swiftly).

  • Installing Leopard on new iMac, installation just goes on and on...

    Hi there!
Just bought a new iMac 24" with OS X 10.4 installed. I ordered the Leopard upgrade and installed it today, and experienced the already documented problem where login password is seemingly accepted but after a few seconds the login window appears again. Recommended solution was to "Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings)". I did that, and have now been staring the installation screen for six hours... surely it doesn't take that long to re-install? Installation process started just fine, but after that, no progress. What could I try next? I tried searching the forum and all I found was that one shouldn't interrupt installation process or it would screw things up, so I'm a bit baffled what to do next. Thanks for any thoughts!

I believe that this is a technical forum, not a gossip page.
I suggest you take your inferences elsewhere - maybe call Apple and talk to them.

  • My new iMac 10.7.3 rejects the installation disc for Microsoft Office 2011. What shall I do?

My new iMac 10.7.3 rejects the installation disc for Microsoft Office 2011. What shall I do?

A little more description would help. What exactly do you mean by Rejects the disc? Does the DVD drive eject the disc shortly after inserting it?
Does the Office installer say something, like can't install on this Mac?
If the Office disc is ejected shortly after insertion try cleaning the disc. Try another DVD disc of any type to see if it is the Office DVD or if the drive ejects all discs.
If it ejects all DVD or CD discs then the drive is bad and you ned to Return your new Mac fro a Full Refund and then buy another NEW unit.
