My old computer with itunes no longer works.  If I hook my ipod to my new computer will I lose the songs that are on it now?

Yes, you will.
Do you have the songs still?
You could add them to your new library if you do.

I cannot open itunes.  When I click on it a message pops up saying that itunes is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.  If I reinstall it will I lose all my songs?  I have over 2,000 songs that I cannot lose!  What do I need to do to fix it and keep all my songs?

Aha, a somewhat different question. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

Sure, as soon as you open iTunes with the new iPod connected, it will have a "Welcome to your New iPod" screen. Just choose Restore from backup.

hi my laptop with my itunes lubrary has crashed so i got a new one but i dont want to sync my iphone to the new laptop incase i lose all my songs on my iphone. how do i sync to a new one without losing everything

The right way is to restore the backup that you kept of your old computer onto your new one. If it is too late for that before you do anything set up a backup process for the new one so when it crashes (note I said "when", not "if") you won't be faced with this problem again.
In lieu of that the apps already mentioned will help you get content off the phone if it was not purchased from iTunes. But it it WAS purchased from iTunes just connect the phone to your new computer, Authorize iTunes on the new computer and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes file menu.

  • I am currently using my brothers apple account for my iphone. now i have created a new account; if i sync my iphone with the new account will i lose all my apps? is there any way i can keep my apps even after syncing and manage from my new account?

I am using my brothers itunes account and syncing my Iphone with it. Now i have created my own itunes account. If i sync my phone to the new account will i lose all my apps? Any way i can keep the existing apps and sync my phone as well?
Best way to move to the new account

No, all content that you download from the store is tied to the account that downloaded it, it can't be transferred to another account

    Hey cjacket13,
When you purchase applications on your iOS device, they are tied to your Apple ID so even if you lose them, you can re-download them from your purchase history.
That said, when you first sync your iPhone to your new computer you'll want to transfer purchases from your iOS device to the computer by following these directions here:

  • My iPod has 7000 songs on it at present, however I have empt. If I were to attach my ipod and open itunes will it delete all my songs on my iPod or will it save them to Itunes   my iTunes folder

I have an iPod classic with 7000 songs in it. I have emptied my iTunes folder and if I attach my iPod to sync, will I lose all my songs on it or will iYunes save them?

Yes. Syncing can thought of a mirroring process where your iPod is updated by iTunes to mirror what is stored in your iTunes library.
So the next time you sync your iPod, everything will be erased.
If you want to copy contents from the iPod to your PC, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you with this task.

If you upgrade from 10.6 to 10.7/10.8 yes there is a risk you can lose your files if something goes wrong requiring a erase and install to fix it.
Your PPC programs will not work in 10.7/10.8
Mac's earlier than a Early 2011 machine shouldn't really upgrade to 10.7/10.8 due to slow performance issues.
If you Software Update from say 10.6.3 to 10.6.8, there is less risk, but possible.
You should make backups regardless, a 10.6 clone and extra copies of files on a external drive.

  • HT1420 will I lose all my songs if I deauthorize my computer

My old computer crashed and need to deauthorize all computers.  1) Will I lose all songs that have already been purchased?  2) Will it affect iphones and ipads associated with the apple id?

    No...
If you no longer have, or access to, the computer(s) you want to deauthorise,
Log in to iTunes,  go to "view your account info" on the itunes store,  deauthorise all five, (Please Note: this can only be done Once every 12 months)  and then re-authorize your current Computer(s) one at a time.

  • I have an iPad, four years old and still going strong.  I want to upgrade to a newer iOS 8 iPad.  If I do this, will I lose all my purchases on the old iPad?  If not, how do I transfer my purchases?

Hi,  If I buy a new iPad, iOS 8, will I lose all my purchases that are on my 4 year old iPad, iOS 5.5.1?  If not, how do I keep them?

Follow the instructions here or here; using the first set of instructions then requires syncing the second device with the iTunes library containing the content.

DO NOT attach & sync your full iPod to an empty iTunes!!!
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple & Free Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to manual transfer – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • Restoring computer- will I lose all my songs?

I'm going to have to restore my computer to it's original factory settings because of a bug that it's having, which means i'll have to lose all my songs on iTunes. When I reinstall iTunes, will all the songs be there again? How do I make it so I don't have to upload and purchase all that music again?

Yes, you will lose everything and have to repurchase it.
Either use File -> Backup library in iTunes to backup everything to CD/DVD or copy /My Documents/My Music/iTunes folder to an external drive.
