help needed please. I haven't used my ipod for some time - my library content is stored on an external hard drive, which i also haven't used for some time. now that i have an ipad i wanted to sync everything but the external drive is broken. i have uploaded and updated all software for ipod/itunes onto my laptop but the programme is recognising that i have a library elsewhere and will only allow me to update from laptop to ipod (which would delete all my music). Can anyone suggest a way around this? many thanks!

That disk is very probably formated as FAT 32, the normal format for PCs. FAT 32 cannot support files larger than 4 GB; also, it corrupts some types of Mac OS files. If you want to securely backup your mac files, you must have a disk prepared for Mac OS.
Therefore, open Disk Utility, choose again 1 partition for your external disk and, under Options, GUID partition map (it may also be a boot disk for an intel mac), then format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. Y0u are done.
If you want to exchange data with PCs, you should chose Master Boot REcord and NTFS format, for this you must use a additional utility like NTFS-3G. But note that mac files may also get corrupt in NTFS format.

I need to export photos from my ipod touch that was synced to my old PC which crashed. I have a new PC with itunes. My itouch is backed up to it now but I don't want to sync it because it warns that my itouch content will be erased. Help!

My old PC crashed. I now have a thousand or so pictures on my itouch and nowhere else. I have backed up this itouch to my new PC with itunes. I want to move or copy the pictures from my itouch to a folder on my new PC. The older photos do not show when I look at the folders, just a handfull of new pictures that were saved by game apps on the itouch. What is the best way to do this?

The photos are on the ipod. Photo sync will erase them. I need a way to extract them from the ipod, or to.extract them from the ipod backup that is who knows where on my PC.

Hi Pez,
iTunes in the Cloud is not iCloud. Any songs that you have purchased but have not downloaded (or have deleted), go to iTunes in the cloud. The setting I mentioned will show all of your purchases in the various views in the Music app, whether they are on your device or not. If you turn that setting off, you will only see items that are actually on your device.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
An alternative which is really not what you should have to do, or the way it is intended to be done, if you properly manage your computer and backups:

Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned above). Do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up.

You will also have to uncheck your phone number is Settings>Messages>Send and Receive. You can't delete the phone nunber since it associated with your yur accounbt whch has the phone.

You should not upgrade to Lion upless you have 4GB of ram. Lion does not support rosita so all your old programs will not funtion and you have to repurchase all old software the is working fine.

Right click 'computer' in your PC/laptop (whichever). Click 'Manage', then 'Services and Applications', then 'Services', you should see 'Apple Mobile Device' running or stopped. If you couldn't find 'Apple Mobile Device', it means you haven't download iTunes into your PC/laptop (whichever).
