If your phone is displaying a screen that has a USB cable and the iTunes logo, your data is already gone. You can restore from a backup (if you ever made one to the PC) or from iCloud if you were using iCloud backup.

My iPhone 4 suddenly turned off without any notice and was dead. I would hold the sleep and main button together and nothing would happen. Once home, I connected it straight to the Adapter and now it is asking me to plug in itunes and 'Restore' my phone. What could have happened? Why is it doing this? never happened before and dont now why it occured. Please help!

Well if its the first time its probably nothing to worry about, things happen. If it happens again i would recommend uninstalling the last app you installed, if that fails take it to the apple store because it could be a hardware issue.

if you werent using an over-the-air solution, such as MobileMe, Gmail, or Yahoo, etc. Which would have sync'd your contacts, then your solution would be to restore from backup...
to do so:
plug your phone into the computer, and right click on the phone as it shows under Devices, and click on "Restore from Backup..."
this will give you the option to restore from the last backup, or a previously stored backup.

PS. Sync often to get multiple recent backups, in case of any hardware/software failures, as has occured with your device.

Um, this makes no sense. The binary is already on the device, it came directly from Apple so I'm not sure where the hold up is. I guess it depends on what is exactly "Verifying update ..." is. I always believed it was about checking to ensure the binary was proper; not sure why it has to call back to Apple servers in that case.
It's super annoying. Apple really needs to fix this problem. Especially when one has to leave and needs to take their devices with them...

Leopard installs updates a bit differently. If it's simply an application that does not change system files, it installs them like before, without having to restart. If the update is to the system, then you must immediately "restart," It then goes to that stars and purple screen to perform the installation. Before, it would do the installation while you still had control of the Mac and would prompt you to restart when it finished the installation. This change probably make things more secure and reliable, because you aren't allowed to do other things on the Mac while system updates are being installed.
