HT4796 Migration process Setup problem on new MAC

I just bought a MacBook Pro today and started the migration process as part of the setup and my PC suddenly shut down during the transfer process. Now the MAC seems hung on the Transferring Your Information screen and won't move.  How do I clear and start again?

Would love to tell you never used that option. I guess it depends how much stuff you got on your old PC..

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins Contextual Menu Items Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following: >MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- Migration Tips and Tricks:

    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.

  • Migrating/upgrading CS5.5 to new mac lion

I currently run CS4 on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard.  I have a new iMac with Lion and I want to upgrade both to CS5.5.  My plan was to
         1. leave CS4 on old mac
         2. use Migration Assistant (too late for Setup Assistant!) to bring CS4 along with all the other applications and everything else to new mac from a Time Machine back up on external HD
         3.  upgrade both from my new CS5.5 disks
I have been reading about some issues with CS5.5 on Lion and I'm wondering if there is a better way to minimize the potential for problems and accomplish what I want to do.  My main concerns are  InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver which I use in a pretty self-taught kind of way.  Thank you.

Sarahw2e the biggest issue you could end up having would be to use the Migration assistant to transfer over Creative Suite 4.  If you want Creative Suite 4 to be installed on your new Macintosh then I would recommend a fresh installation from the install media.
For issues with Lion in general I would recommend reviewing Known issues | Adobe products | Mac OS 10.7 Lion.

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • HT1661 I am trying to migrate using firewire to a new mac.

When cables are connected and the old mac is rebooted as target disc the new mac cannot see the old mac to start migration. I have update all software. (old mac 10.6.8 and new mac is 10.7) any ideas. The new mac asks: 'make sure both computers are connected to the same network'

The target disk mode is not working.
Just use a external drive to copy from the old Mac
Then create the same named user accounts on the new machine, log into each of them and import their respective files manually into their Music, Pictures Movies, Documents folders, should be done a lot faster than Migration over Wifi.
Don't copy 10.6 Library, that's different in 10.7 and now hidden. Don't copy the entire users folder, just the contents of Music, Docs, Pics etc into the same folders on the 10.7 machine. Drag and drop copy, simple and elegant, less issues.
Programs: reinstall these from fresh sources using the same license codes, delete off the old machine.
Some times you have to contact the developer for a new key for the new machine, the old key is retired.
This method is better than using Migration Assistant, less chances of problems/corruption/slow downs, you'll have to tweak things a bit more again of course, minor really.
As you should know you can't use older PPC based programs on the 10.7 machine anyway.

  • Problems with new Mac Book Pro 13'' +power adaptor

    Hi there,
I'm new here and first of all I'd like to appologize from my lack of technical language, since my only interesst in computers is that they don't give me problems so I can keep not knowing too much about them.
Ok, so I bought the new Mac Book Pro 13'' exactly 2 months ago cause my old and long travelled Power Book G4 died. I didn't hesitate to spend the money to buy the new one, cause I was so happy with my experience with the old one and in my mind returning to PCs was not even considered.
BUT...I'm not totally happy about my new laptop...from day 1 Safari would just close itself but I didn't give too much thought about it. After this, not only Safari can close up to several times a day, but also iphoto or any other program that I use for work. But that's not all..One day it would take minutes to start running and it would go extremely slow...another day it would start also very slow but also it wouldn't show the tools bar on top or my folders. Another time it would show me, instead of the normal starting page, a page where it would ask me to accept or not a kind of revision for hardware. After so many problems of course I pressed yes...everything seemed normal, then computer started and seemed to be running normal again (aside from this safari and other programs that shut down). Today my computer, when moved, just went totally blank but fortunately I could start it with nor problems after it.
So...anyone knows what the problem must be?? Should I take it to a Technical service ??? and there's another issue...i'm handing in m phD in a week so I can't just be without computer now, and in a week I'm flying to Canada where I also will need my computer for work...what can I do???
And the second problem...the power adaptor from the beginning seemed to act funny sometimes...sometimes charching, sometimes not, I would follow the instructions in the support part and after being several minutes changing one cord for the other, to keep it 1 minute disconnected and so at some point it would start functioning again. But this happened seldom so also I would think it was a protectiion mechanism of the adapter. But, when this is happening more often than not, then it gets annoying. Also I've been transporting it in a careful way since I bought it to find that after only 2 months in the cord (from the computer to adaptor) you can see the internal cable as if there was some cut...a third one seems to be appearing too. I've taken it to the technical support and the guy who was helfpul but also honest said he couldn't do anything for me cause since there were those cuts, he could always be said that it was a misuse of it-an accident and then he would have to pay the replace himself. Well, it's not!!! My old adaptor has been transported in a way less careful way and it's survived with NO problems for 5 years. The material is clearly different from the old cord. This one because it's new, I only need to put it in a special bag air protected. Honestly I don't feel happy to pay 80 € for an adaptor that I don't know if it's gonna last me only 2 months or that I know I can't transport normally. The guy suggested me to ask in forums and to call directly to the apple technical service.
Again, has anyone had any similar problems with the adaptor???
    Rosanna

Take it to an Apple retailer and have the computer repaired.  It is still in warranty.

  • HT4413 Migration Assistant for a brand new mac that has been used already?

My dad bought a Mini but has been using it for a few months but didn't transfer anything from his old Mac. All his address book entries and files are still on his original Mac. Can Migration Assistant still be of help to transfer over the data without erasing what he's accumlated on his new Mac? Is it going to write over his email for instance?
    Thanks!

Migration Assistant is not the tool you need to use at this point. Instead you should manually copy the data you want from the old computer to the new computer. If both computers have Firewire ports then use Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the old computer into TDM and the new computer normally. You should then find a disk icon for the old computer's drive on the Desktop of the new computer.
Before you do any of the described file copying below be sure you have quit Mail and Address Book if they are now open except where directed.
For Mail you open Mail and select Import from the File menu. Check the top option to import from Apple Mail. Navigate on the old computer to its /Users/username/Library/Mail/ folder and then locate a folder named "Mailboxes." Select the folder and click on the Open button. Select the mailboxes you want to import and click on the Import/OK button. This will import the old mail to a new set of mailboxes in Mail under a mailbox named Imported. You can then move the old mail to wherever you want in Mail.
For contacts locate the /Users/username/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook/ folder. Copy the entire folder to the new computer to the same location on the new computer.
Last, navigate to the /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ folder and copy these preference files: com.apple.mail.plist and all beginning with com.apple.AddressBook. Copy them to the same location on the new computer.

  • Sond problems on new Mac Pros (2010)??? Buying new tower advice.

    Hi all!!!
Has any one here have sound problems with the new Mac Pros (2010)??? I hear they
still have sound "pops" or something like that as with the 2009 MP. I'm looking
to buy a new MP since my G5 tower just died today (RIP) so need a new tower but need
to know if this sound issue is still there. BTW any advice on what I should buy for my next tower
would be welcomed too!!! I have a 2.5mhz LC G5 and I basically work with Photoshop, iMovie, Final
cut Express and almost every thing else and games too. I herd that the single 6 core (3.33mhz) is
a wise choice compared to a 12 core. Can I still use my 10.5 OSX (PPC) on the new Tower and then
update it to 10.6? Will be getting 12gigs of ram from OWC, NOT paying $1000+ to get 12 gigs from
Apple. Can I still use my 1.5GB/s(speed) hard drives? I know that the Mac Pros uses the 3Gb/s HD if
so I could fill the Mac Pro with my 2 G5's HD.
    Thanks for any advice!!!!

    Hey there!!
Why would Apple continue offering that vid card in the store as an option and still talk about
it in the Mac section of it's web site???? Are you sure it's not the PC version of the 5870? I didn't
read any info on the net about it (AppleInsider, MacRumours etc...) I've just made a search on Yahoo
and Google and it says that it affects the 5770 too and what I could read it's PC related here's the
    clip:
"+*AMD has confirmed that a previously reported issue of grey lines or screens with certain Radeon HD 5000 GPUs affects both the 5700 and 5800 series.*+
+Earlier this week, it emerged that many 5000 series users were experiencing problems with crashing and grey or colored lines appearing on his or her display. The grey screens and hangups were occurring while users were gaming, watching movies or in some cases, when the computer was just sitting idle.+
+When users contacted customer service they were told the issue was caused by a *Windows 7 update*. ATI recommended a clean install of the graphics card driver as a possible fix, stating this had solved some users problems. The ATI Catalyst 10.1 release notes (published Wednesday) note the problem as a known issue; however, *it's described as a problem affecting users of all versions of Windows and not just Windows 7.*+
+Today Dave Erskine, an AMD spokesperson, informed us that, "only a small number of ATI Radeon HD 5800 series and ATI Radeon HD 5700 series cards are exhibiting the behavior," and that the team is closing in on a fix for the apparently software related issue.+
+"The team is testing a driver hotfix and initial tests indicate that it resolves the issue," Mr Erskine said. "We need to test it further but we expect to make the hotfix available shortly."+
So I don't think its Mac related. Thanks for the info but still getting that Vid card anyway.
    Thanks

  • Problems on new mac pro with Blackmagick DaVinci Resolve. Others have found the same problems?

The purchase of the new mac (D700x2, 32Mb RAM, 1TB SSD) cost me a lot of money.
It was intended for use with Adobe Premiere, After effects, Photoshop, and Da Vinci Resolve Blackmagic 10.
I unwisely upgraded to Mac OS 10.9.3 (hoping that with the new drivers the machine would improve its poor performance).
    A glaring error.
At the time the workstation is just a pretty ornament because for my job (which I do for more than 20 years old) is completely unusable.
The machine crashes constantly in DaVinci Resolve.
All of this is putting a strain on my patience and the patience of my clients.
I hope that Apple is aware of the situation clearly enough, and assume that for once his responsibilities working to resolve as quickly as possible these unacceptable problems.
I've always been an Apple customer and "friend" of Apple but this situation is not acceptable.
Before creating advertising slogans you should create products able to function.
What is the point of all banchmarks DaVinci Resolve ppoi if the machine is not able to run it for a professional use?
I beg you: do not slogans and more substance.

  • Scrolling problems on new mac mini

I bought a new mac mini yesterday.  Out of the box, it was ready for an update to 10.7.2, which I did.  The problem is with scrolling on certain web pages, even when browsing Apple's site, the scroll bar lags or will not move at all.  A perfect example would be http://news.google.com/    even after a page has fully loaded, the scroll bar does not respond.  After long delay, it might jump to a different scroll position, but definitely NOT smooth scrolling.
I ran disk utility and repaired permissions.  I have restarted mac mini.
This is not the case running os 10.7.2 with my 2007 imac.
    Any suggestions?

    Very interesting....
I restored the entire os lion, no help.  Firefox works just fine.  Safari is broken, when using screen sharing.  I can scroll pages with the mac mini using it's own mouse and display, however, the mini's mouse becomes de-activated when screen sharing is enabled onto it.  The mouse controlling the imac cannot scroll safari's browser, nor can it refresh pages when doing such things as 'submit reply'.  Lol, I had to reply using Firefox.  I do believe it is essentially a refresh issue, during user activity within each page.  If you click a scroll postion, and then click outside of the page, it will refresh to the new scroll position.  This is the same case as for submitting a reply.
Outside of that, I am disappointed that both the imac's mouse and the mini mac's mouse cannot be used simultaneously during screen sharing  with the newest update.  Whereas, I can have simultaneous mouse control when accessing a non-lion macbook pro from my lion imac.
I do not see any reason to disallow simultaneous mouse use.  This works great for comunnicating to users in other rooms, with direct desktop support.
Actually, I have found that there is still mouse control, it is just not visible on the vnc user's screen.  I wish there was a way to re-activate that, it would probably resolve the scrolling issues too.  Any know what to replace in what library?

  • Migrating old iPhoto Library to new Mac

    Hi,
I recently experienced a hard drive crash on my 5 yr old iMac, so I've purchased a new one instead of repairing and upgrading the old one.  I now have a large iPhoto library on a backup drive (drag file copy, not Time Machine, and yes I am using Time Machine now...).  Since I started with an older version of iPhoto, I have the Library folder with all the folders visible inside, like the Originals, Modified, etc.  I was surprised to see that the iPhoto Library on my new system is a single file.  I had hoped to just drag the existing folders to the appropriate location on the new Mac.  Barring that, I tried importing the Library from my backup drive into iPhoto '11 on my new system (by just highlighting the Library folder in the import window), and boy what a mess I have now.  Most events appear two or three times, with some folders containing all the photos, some containing smaller versions (some type of thumbnails I presume).  I had around 25K photos on the old system, now I have over 55K after importing them to the new Mac.  After having spent a gajillion hours editing the original photos for dust, color correction, etc, I'm not at all interested in re-doing all this work.  I've done some searching but can't find any documentation on moving my old Library to my new iMac.  Any suggestions or a good URL would be great.
    Thanks
    Lou

Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
In your case I woukd simply start over. Trash that Library on the new machine.
To migrate a Library to a new machine is simple:
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine (or in your case, from the Hard Drive) to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I was surprised to see that the iPhoto Library on my new system is a single file.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the files in the Library via the Finder has not been supported on any version of iphoto. As an FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.

  • Many Problems with New Mac Book

I just recieved my brand new Mac Book Pro laptop today from UPS and I noticed a couple of things: 1.) The Machine was already on when I pulled it out of the box 2.) I notice that the safari browser had browsing history from prior days, like someone had already used the laptop before and didn't wipe it or they just ship me the store displayed laptops when I'm suppose to get it "brand spanking new". 3.) The OS is Lion, when it should have been upgrade to Yosemite. 4.) I can't change the Best Buy Administrator user password, I add my Apple ID to the Admin account but the "Allow user to reset password with Apple ID" option is disable for some reason, so I can't download the software I need for work. How do I change the password? This is highly unacceptable and poor quality of inspection of product!! I paid too much money for this product to be in this state when it should have been brand new! DCGal

Hello and welcome to the forum DCGal,
Buying an Apple product is never a small investment, but as an Apple lover I can honestly say their products are worth every penny. (I love my iPad) I can definitely understand the disappointment you felt when you opened your package in anticipation of using your MacBook and discovered that it was in less than brand new condition. I'm very sorry to hear this has happened to you.
That being said, using the e-mail you registered on the forum, I was able to locate the purchase and noticed that you were offered discounts due to it being a clearance model. Was this a display model? I suggest you take it back to the store where you purchased it. Regrettably if this was a clearance model they might not have another one to exchange it with, but they can certainly assist you with the issues you are having. I truly apologize for the inconveniece this may cause, and I assure you I will be documenting your experience for further training opportunities.
Once again thank you for visiting the forum, and please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
    Sincerely,

  • Problems migrating PS CS5 to our new Mac

We just purchased a new iMac and are starting to transfer all our stuff over from our old Mac mini.  The first order of business was to move over Lightroom, and that went fine; it works just like on the old machine.  However, we're having trouble getting PS to work.
We deactivated PS on the old machine and downloaded the disk image for PS from Adobe.  When we ran the installer, it accepted our serial number, and completed with no problems.  However, starting PS gives the message "Could not initialize Photoshop failed to initialize CoolType."  There's an OK button which just makes the application quit.  After scratching our heads a bit and not making progress, we tried running the uninstaller and then reinstalling from scratch--same result.  We found some suggestions dealing with such a problem that involved users on network file systems, but we of course don't have anything like that.  This is for an iMac with OS X version 10.6.6.  Any ideas?  We have no clue where to start.

    A very wise move.
In my experience gained when helping troubleshoot a substantial number of Macs over the years, "migrating" either OS files, applications, or program files is a guarantee of endless grief in the long run.  Others disagree.
My advice is to install from the original media.  Data files have to be copied, transferred or migrated, of course.
