Huge mpegs

Hello.
I recently imported 8 miniDV tapes (4 angles, 2 1/2 hours of footage per camera) off of a sony HVR-Z1U to a PC, using Adobe Premier 2.0.
Basically it was 4 full tapes (~2 hrs) that size up b/t 10 & 11 gbs; and then 4 partial tapes (~30 min) that size up around 6 gbs. It's HDV, so everything came in at mpeg-2.
I'm currently transferring (via ethernet cable) the files from the PC to a Mac Pro with 2 x 2Ghz dual core Intel with 3 gb ram @ 667 mhz.
After transferring a couple, I wanted to check the playback, but to my consternation, the system hangs whenever it tries to access it. If I click on the mpeg in Finder, it hangs when loading the preview; if I double click to open it in quicktime, it hangs when loading quicktime.
So, this isn't an FCP question per se, but these minor problems will inevitably disrupt the editing. I'd like to keep these in HD, if I can, but I know that mpeg2 is difficult to edit with. Are there any suggestions for helping my system deal with these huge files? Is it normal that my computer would be frightened into submission by their mere sight? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you need more info, please let me know.

editing on your PC might be best.
But I wanted to clear up a few things...
H.264 is a delivery format not an editing format.
Mpeg and H.264 are both processor intensive formats, hence the long encode.
If you use compressor try DV for SD or DVC pro for HD.
"after 8 clips, that's too much for my HD."<
you aren't putting your media on your system drive, are you? Not good at all(!)
Good luck!

  • HELP - Mpeg Editing

    Hi,
This is my first post here.
English is not my primary language so expect stone-age English.
This said, Im posting here because I just received my Canon HV20 and after some recording tests I need now to isolate specific takes from that MiniDV tape to later use in a more sense movie time line.
Now I just wonder how you guys do to edit your MPEG 1440x1080 HDV files preserving the original MPEG HDV quality?
Since capturing a MiniDV tape generates a long MPEG file, how do you do to isolate specific takes and export/save them to later assemble a new lossless HDV footage (like a movie)?
    Explaining:
    1. Record a MiniDV tape using the Canon HV20.
    2. After record the tape use the HDV/Firewire output port to export the MiniDV tape to Adobe Premiere Pro (or any different software).
    3. Now that I have the full tape in a huge MPEG file how can I isolate the takes I want to export/save loosely?
How do you guys do to export/save that isolated takes lossless?
Do you export maintaining the MPEG file format?
Doesnt this method recompress the original MPEG file again losing HDV quality?
Do you export the isolated takes using any other format like uncompressed AVI files? Uncompressed AVI files are not to heavy to edit in real time resulting in frame skip?
Please, Im just starting and Im very confused about the best way to edit and maintain HDV 1440x1080 MPEG quality imagery in extracted/isolated takes from the main HDV MPEG file.
    Many thanks.
    Ben

Premiere does not support Scene Detect, which will break your clips up into smaller files based upon breaks in timecode.
Use a free utility HDV Split it will Scene Detect your tapes.

With regards to quality, capturing from tape is merely a

of the info. What is on your tape will end up on your timeline.

  • Iphoto slideshow exported for iweb viewed by windows

I have been trying to publish an iphoto slideshow that I had exported as a movie for weeks. My mac people can see it, my PC family members cannot! I tried to make it small for the web, changed the filename to mp4 from mpv4, but PC people still could not see it. So I tried to put the slideshow movie in as a huge .mpeg and it disappeared. ( I had made an avi file but it looked horrible so used the equally as large but better ,mpeg)
I am getting the idea that it can only be done with imovie! Is than an authoritative step by step on iphoto 08,quicktime pro, and Iweb so I can put all these things together?

Don't use the Finder to change the file extension. Not only is it folly but it breaks the links used in your iWeb page code.
Don't use AVI. It is a dead container discontinued by its authors (Microsoft) years ago.
    Don't use MPEG-1 (1991 format).
Default exports from iPhoto to QuickTime formats use the newer H.264 video codec which requires any machine (Mac or PC) have QuickTime version 7 installed. If they can't install version 7 they can't view your file.

You can't burn a video dvd using just PSE. Adobe wants you to use Premiere Elements to create the final video disc. If you have PRE, use that. If not, just output the slideshow as a WMV file and use whatever burning software you have, even Windows DVD maker, to create the actual video disc.
The only kind of video disc PSE can make is the hateful VCD format, which is always terrible in quality and not well supported anymore. It was a good idea back when DVD burners were very expensive, but it's archaic now.

Your link works just fine. Leave it alone.
Don't use the Finder to edit file names after your Site is Published in iWeb.

A direct link to your QuickTime file:
202 MB's 23 minutes in duration at 640X480 dimension. It contains 6 .mp3 files and an MPEG-4 Video track (good choice for PC visitors).
202 MB's is just too much in file size, download time and bandwidth usage. Your iWeb page design doesn't even use the full 640X480 size.
Use QuickTime Pro to "Export". Use "Movie to QuickTime Movie" and click the "Options" button to change the dimension to 320X240 (fits your iWeb layout) via the "Size" button. Use the "Settings" button to change the video codec to H.264 (QuickTime version 7 required). Leave the frame rate the same ("Current"). Set the "Data Rate" to 800.
Check the Audio check box and click its Option button. Select AAC as the audio codec and use 128 as the bit rate.
Export the file and wait for the conversion. This new file will be 4 or 5 times smaller in file size.
Name the file identical to the original (Todd visit 08.mov) and save it to your Desktop.
Once done you can replace the older version on your iDisk with this new, smaller, file.

  • Not getting an option of exporting in mpeg 4 format? AVI file the size of the file is extremely huge

    Hi,
I am not getting an option of exporting in mpeg 4 format? Infact when I am rendering in AVI file the size of the file is extremely huge. Please can somebody help me in reducing the file size & exporting in MPEG4 format.

You need to learn about encoding. The default file type is Lossless for a reason. If you are using Ray-tracing and you have a supported Cuda card you must use the Adobe Render Cue. If you are not using Ray-traced rendering then you should be using the Adobe Media Encoder.
This will get you started: Basic Workflow, the last section is on rendering.

  • I Know I am in the Wrong Room, but I Need Some Help with an Mpeg 2 File

         Hi, all--
Forgive me as best you can--I am in a fairly desperate situation. Allow me to explain, and please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you know a lot about this stuff I'm going to describe.
We have a project, 29 minutes long. It is a slideshow of paintings with original music by me.
I live in central Mexico (love it!). However, I was forced to use a video editor who has been a dunce so far. No matter what I ask him for, whether it is a version in a specific format or an edit, I get something different. Every time he has fixed a problem, he has created a new one.
Now his house was broken into and all of his computers were stolen--I suspect he only has low quality backup files of the project.
We are in a huge rush, because this is supposed to debut at an arts festival in October, and we need to duplicate a few hundred DVDs first...and now the problem:
ALL WE HAVE FROM HIM IS AN MPEG2 of the project. The sound won't play on my Mac, but it plays on my friend's PC, so I have to assume that a pro duplication house won't have a problem with the sound if I send him the file on a thumb drive.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE MPEG2 is that it is jittery when key images slide across the screen. This will look terrible on a 6 x 10' screen at the premiere, plus we do not want to sell DVDs with this unprofessional look.  I asked the editor for an M2V file (requested by the guy who was going to create a menu) and he instead gave me an Mpeg2 that is jittery.
QUESTION: is there such a program that can take an mpeg 2 and eliminate jitter? I do NOT think I can get another file from the editor.
CAN ANY OF YOU DO THE WORK IF I SEND YOU THE FILE? I WILL PAY.
    Thanks.
    Doug

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Why is my iPhone 5 skipping/not playing any of my songs in an mpeg-1 layer 3 file format? This only started happening after I updated to iOS 8.

I'm getting really upset with this ridiculous nonsense!! Ever since that lousy upgrade to iOS 8, mind you I did not get the worthless recalled iOS 8.0.1 update, my phone has been freaking out. Glitching and freezing are now common place and my apps, which I have never had a problem with in the past, are now crashing without warning. To top it all off my phone, which has had NO problems in this area before iOS 8, is all of sudden skipping and now deleting all of my mpeg-1 layer 3 music files without my consent!! This leads me to assume that the only two explanations are 1) this is just a huge screw up on Apples part and now several of their technical lackeys are feverishly working to get a reasonable working update out and to quell a lot of unnecessary headaches like mine and many others OR 2) Apple is now forcing our hand in purchasing songs only in their own personal format, MP4 I believe it is. Either way, I'm more than a little ****** off and I'm sure Steve Jobs is rolling over in his grave at the large amount of excrement disguised as Apple products and operating systems his beloved company is dumping on it's faithful customers.

    Try
Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID: > Sign out then sign back in.
Assuming you have Internet connection to the Internet.

  • Settings for mpeg streamclip?

I'm trying to convert some 8cm dvd's from a sony handycam.
The footage is in widescreen PAL.
    I'm converting to QT.
What are the best settings to use?
Commpression? Apple DV PAL or ?
    Frame size?
    Frame rate?
    Frame blending & better downscale?
    The interlace options?
    Zoom?
    Cropping?
    Scale?
Also the 2-pass option is not highlighted to select!
And what easysetup do i then use in FCP? PAL anamorpic

    ok, thanks guys,
    so i made the frame size 1024 x 576, 25 fps, uncompessed 8bit 4:2:2.
and imported it into an uncomp 8bit sequence but there is alot of interlacing which i'm guessing the deinterlace filter will knock out!
other prob is the files are huge and i don't think i will have enough HD for the all the media files.
should i go back to DV pal compession in Mpeg streamclip

  • How can I burn an mpeg onto a DVD without having to use IDVD or IMovie?

So I've got a few jpg's and mpeg's that I would like to burn for PC friends, but the only way I can figure out how to get these onto a CD or DVD is by using IDVD or IMovie with my IMac. Is there a way around this? Why doesn't a blank DVD or CD icon come up on the desktop once inserted so that I can simply drag and drop my photos and short movies to it to be burned accordingly? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding Dave, but this option doesn't
seem to appear in the preferences of IDVD, DVD
Player, or Quicktime. It seems strange that the only
way I can burn a movie is to create a new IMovie
project and and then burn it via IDVD. This is a
huge hassle when all I want is a few short videos in
no particular order saved on a CD or DVD. My CD
player doesn't seem to be listed separately and is
tied into Itunes. Isn't ILife suppose to make
things easier? Thanks for your help.

  • Cause of Itunes 7.6.0.29 freezes on Windows - .mpeg updates

Short version - itunes is nuts, and is digging through your videos while you're trying to listen to music. Take all video (including video podcasts) out of your iTunes library, and return to normal. Save it somewhere and put it back in whenever they issue a patch.
    Long version:
I have a large collection of music and video on iTunes (14k items, 60GB), and ever since upgrading to the latest Itunes I've noticed I can start playing a song, but then the UI will freeze for 10-15 seconds once it's about 8-9 second into playing the song - the sound continues, but the interface becomes unresponsive. Looking at the other threads here, sounds like I'm not the only one with the problem.
Using Process Explorer from Systeminternals, I noticed this freeze corresponds to a huge spike in IO from itunes.exe at that time. Purely guessing, but it seems like the UI/event loop thread is blocking doing some sort of disk access, while the thread playing the music continues.
Using Process Monitor (again from sysinternals), I monitored what exactly Itunes.exe was doing at this time. It is going through every MPEG file in the iTunes library, opening it, querying data about it, and apparently in some cases, reading it in completely. This is while playing an unrelated sound file. This clearly seems to be due to a bug - there doesn't seem to be any immediate need to do this.
Removing all the videos from my iTunes library brought things back to normal. Hardly ideal, but way, way better than the way it was.

    Hi Bemis,
Yep, I spotted this a couple of days back - I'm running Mac OS, but it's the same deal with the MPEG files (the Apple-supplied Activity Monitor does a good job with respect to examining individual programmes, threads or even processes).
However, I would like to refine your observation a little: I think it has to do with some format(s) of MUXED MPGs, since with non-muxed MPGs or movies of other formats, the files are updated (somehow, with some information, whatever it is), and then not checked again. Specifically, only the movies in my library from a SONY camera (muxed MPEG1 files) are causing the problem - countless other files with various formats/containers are checked and updated just once, in the background, and don't cause a problem.
I am guessing it has something to do with the new Apple movie service, maybe looking for 'out of date' rental files, so as to delete them, and marking (or, in the case of the MPGs which are repeatedly checked, trying to mark) them as non-rental films.
Apple (or an Apple employee, to be precise) actually FINALLY reacted with the following post (see the end of the locked thread):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6426729
Pretty lame, really - I mean, there are better ways of finding MPG files than clicking 'info' on individual files, particularly if you have 100's or even 1000's of video files. And even if this is a temporary solution, it's pathetic that there is not even a word about an update to solve it permanently and properly, so that iTunes can carry on being used as a central media library without exceptions.
But here's hoping The one (vaguely) bright light is that Apple at least FINALLY reacted on a semi-official basis, instead of blaming the individual computers, which shows that they do really keep at least a bit of an eye on these discussions.

  • SANYO FH1A, 2000A, MPEG-4 FILES, & TRANSCODING IN FCE

Is there an effective method for transcoding this camera's files that makes them native to FCE 4.0 so I don't have to render EVERY shot if it's changed in the time line? I have been shooting 1920x1080 60fps HR. Importing them as mpeg 4's, exporting them as quicktime files, then reimporting the file seems to work but I can only do one file at a time and it's time consuming. Is there any way to have the work done before, or as, I import into FCE, like you can log AVCHD files? Seems strange Apple would license their name to SANYO for the camera when the lowest resolution shooting is all that is compatible. Have I purchased the wrong camera for using on FCE? Love the video quality. Hate the pain in the 8&## editing. Apologies if this question has been asked elsewhere. I searched everywhere but could not find an answer.

Apologies. When I wrote uncompressed, I meant I had switched (using STREAMCLIP) to AIC for HD, thinking that was the same thing since the files were no longer mpeg 4. But even in AIC, the file sizes are huge. Should they be that large, or am I doing something else wrong too? And thanks. Your knowledge has already saved me hours of what would have been wasted time. Not related, but what happens to files shot in 60 fps in FCE? Does the quality drop? Is it a waste of time when the footage is transcoded? Does FINAL CUT work with 60 fps, or is the camera technology ahead of the editing software?

  • MPEG or AVI in PPro CS4 - which is better to work with?

Back when I was using older versions of Premiere Pro, I was forcefully told by people here on the Adobe forums that I should avoid doing any editing work in MPEG format.  The emphatically-worded advice was that I should do everything in AVI within Premiere, and export it as AVI, and then let Encore handling transcoding it into MPEG form when the time came for that.
There were several reasons for that.  One was that several people told me that MPEG's lossy nature meant that the more you edited and re-saved a file, the more quality you lost each time.  I was told that AVI avoided this problem.  Another reason for it was that Premiere Pro's handling of the MPEG file format was extremely buggy - which is indeed a phenomenon I experienced firsthand.  I struggled a LOT with how Premiere Pro handled MPEG files in those older versions.
Now that I'm asking questions about CS4, having just upgraded 3 weeks ago, I'm seeing a different trend in the comments people are making.  Now, it seems, the advice is that it's better to do my work within MPEG. In a different thread, I was told that Premiere Pro can no longer format chapter markings for Encore as part of AVI files, but that functionality does exist now with MPEG.  And other comments in other threads seemed to favor working in MPEG.
So, has that changed?  Is MPEG now the "preferred" format to use for files when editing and exporting video footage?  Isn't lossiness still an issue?

The key is to keep the footage in its source format and codec as long as possible, changing only when the final export is ready.  If you need to convert your footage to another format and codec to edit it, then choose a lossless or near-lossless codec:
For AVI, uncompressed, Lagarith and UT are good choices.  Uncompressed is huge and slow; Lagarith and UT are much faster and much smaller in file size.
For MOV, Animation and Photo-JPEG are good choices.
For MPEG2, I-frame only MPEG2 at high bit rates like 100 Mbps is a good choice.
If you are exporting to MPEG2 DVD, it really doesn't matter if you let Pr or En do the MPEG2 encoding; the encoder can be set identically in both applications.  With the new Dynamic Link from Pr to En in CS4, it makes a lot of sense to send the sequence to En and then let En transcode it.

  • How to manage huge file size documents in SharePoint 2013?

we have different kinds of files
.avi, .wmv, mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .wav, .snd, .au,.mdb,
    .db,.bat, .exe, .dll,
    and .jar
    huge in file size.
appreciated solutions for DMS. like sharepoint and file server or any other solutions.

You have a hard limit of 2Gb which you cannot get around with Remote Blob Storage or anything else. Beyond that size, you're going to have to store content outside SharePoint with links to the content for your readers, of using Search Indexing on the file
    location.
If the files are large but not greater than 2Gb they can be stored in SharePoint, but you should be aware of the supported limits for Content Database size, which I recall as 100Gb for a single Content DB, or up to 200Gb for a rarely updated Content DB containing
    a single site collection.

  • Question about "RE-COMPRESSION" of mpeg 4 files

First off this is a great forum. It has answered many questions. This is my first post.
    This is my workflow.
    1. I have a massive library of Betacam tapes that I am archiving ( over 2000) average length 45 minutes)
    2. I capture them from a betacam deck, thru a canopus adcvc 110, at SD, No problems.
    3. I wind up with media files that are like 15 gigs. I have over 40 terabytes of external storage, I use firewire 800 (so far, so good)
    4. I then take the media files, drag them to the timeline, edit etc, add graphics from motion etc
    5. I then simply play the timeline via firewire to a dv, video deck, and send the tape to the tv station, they closed caption it and it hits the air
(so life is great, this works perfect)
    Here comes the question
    1. After having done that, I use the "send to compressor" function, to generate an mpeg 4 file, which instead of 12 gigs is like less than one, it looks great.
    2. This file is then uploaded to an ftp site, given a description, and then put on the website for viewing or purchase.
3, since I have like 2000 tapes, do the math, if each one takes 12 gigs....lots of drives.
    4. Most tapes are NOT edited for television broadcast, I just find a good in and out point for a fade, compress it, shoot it to ftp and im done.
    5. Recently I have begun deleting the 12 gig files, sine I have the messages in mpeg 4...to avoud buying several petabytes of storge.
    SOOOO
After all that, here is my question.
If I want to edit a program that I have in the archive, that the decision has been made to broadcsat for some reason, If I drag the MPEG$ file onto the timeline, edit it from a 50 minute down to a 28:30, drop in green screen cut aways, grapics, lower thirds animated transitions between clips, titles, etc...
    Render it.
THEN play it directly from the timeline via firewire to the mini dv deck...
How much quality will I lose on the base video, which is mpeg 4, as compared to the 12 gig media file?
Does it "re- compress" in some way?
should I just suck it up and pay for storage for the 12 gig files that probably will never use for broadcast?
or can I use an MPEG 4 file as my "main video" and not come out looking like an amature moron?
Does any of that make sense? or is it TMI from an idiot?
I come from the analoge days, D-3's and D-5's, grass valley 200 switcher, pinnacle dve's, 18 Ikegamis shooting NFL football. Betacams, D-1's, sattelite uplinks. all in good old NTSC 525...
So bear with an old man.
    Any assistance would be great.
Can I edit using an MPEG4 file and not get burned?
    Be well all.

You probably won't have a huge loss in quality-- as you say yourself, the MPEG4 looks pretty good for it's file size. I won't get into a debate about whether or not it's the best option for archival, that's another thread.
But as long as you're editing in FCP (7), you'll want to convert it to something else before importing. ProRes is a pretty standard choice. Otherwise it'll be nothing but pain. You can still archive in MPEG-4, but for those that you pull from the archive to re-broadcast, recompress them to ProRes.
