Hwd speed can't be beat

Hey all, just like to report on some progress with hwd and lshwd
Thanks to z4ziggy and rasat (along with some minor input from myself) the archlinux hardware detection provided by hwd/lshwd is now faster than kudzu (redhat) and knoppix... monitor detection in both of these is very sluggish, and now hwd takes less than a second (or about 0.2s on non-DDC setups) whereas knoppix usually takes about 3-10 seconds... and runs about the same on a non-DDC setup.
right now, I seriously doubt the speed/accuracy of this setup can be beaten - but it's going to require some testing.
anyone interested in helping out with this?

hwsetup -v output for my videocard:

So it doesn't say vesa directly, nor nv.
Lspci's output is more or less the same as lshwd's output (surprise ;-):

As you also could have seen with lshwd's output, it's a Nvidia TNT2 card (model 64). If that doesn't ring a bell: TNT2 was the last card before the Geforce 1, so quite enough time to put it in some list.
I use a cutom kernel with most things build in and not as modules. Besides, it's about hardware detection, not module loading. The info from hotplug was more to show all the stuff that's present, and to show how way too long it takes to figure that out (and load the modules, but still). Hotplug is hard to beat in functionality: It basically finds everything, it calls also udev so the device files can be made and allows custom scripts which are called when the device of your choice is detected (useful for things like automatic network connection setup with e.g. usb modems). Weak point of hotplug is that it's only good at finding devices when they're plugged in, so the /sys scanning and shellscript bouncing at startup with /etc/rc.d/hotplug start is way too slow. A lacking feature is automatic X config generation, but that shouldn't be hotplug's task anyway, IMHO that's something that X should have build in, something that's good and fast enough to do at each startup (utopia?). It doesn't help that not all hardware is easily autoconfigured.
I don't see the use of a /etc/sysconfig directory, as the goal seems to be fast autoconfiguration and Arch doesn't use sysconfig anyway. Full x info includes monitor setup stuff, one of the hardest things to reliably autodetect well. If you're lucky the monitor supports autodetection (DCC or whatever), but even if it does it can give unreliable info, thus not using the monitor optimally. Also doing input devices detection when not being able to count on /dev/input/* may be hard (serial mouse/keyboard, usb things, etc).

    Hi,

  • High speed and Low Speed CAN

    Hi
This is my first time to use CAN.
I have LabVIEW  2010 and  LabVIEW FPGA
I have NI 3110 Dual-Core Industrial Controller with Windows OS, NI 9157, NI 9852 CAN Low Speed Module and NI 9853 CAN High Speed Module to be used to monitor the CAN messages from an ECU unit.
The connection is done as the following:
    ·         The High speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9853 (Port 0)
    ·         The low speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9852 (Port 0)
    ·         The baud rate of the 9853 is 500kbps
    ·         The baud rate of the 9852 is 50kbps
    ·         Both modules are set to “Listen Only”
    ·         “Module Clock” in both modules is set to 20MHz
    ·         CAN networks are 29-bit and 11-bit.
My consideration is to read all the messages from both modules without losing any message. Below is a picture from the block diagram on the FPGA target, is this the best way to read CAN messages from both modules? Also, could you please suggest what is the best way to read the messages on Host vi?
Unfortunately, I do not have the module right now to do some test, so that I cannot get the iteration time (“CAN Low Speed Loop” and “CAN High Speed Loop” show in the picture below), could you please tell how to calculate the iteration time needed for each loop depending on the above information.

The way that you have proposed to use the CAN module to monitor the BUS is a bad idea.  We have a prebuilt driver that will do most of this work for you.  You will need to download and install the NI-CAN 2.7.3 and then you will be able to use the example finder.  In the example finder look for.
The example finder is accessed through the Help menu.

  • How to use PCI-CAN LS (low speed can bus card) with hi speed devices

I'm having problems connecting the low speed card to the hi speed devices: I've setup the bus with 120 ohms resistors terminating it. The devices seem to be working fine but the can card doesn´t seem to receive or send anything. It has rth and rtl of 510ohms. The card and devices are at 125kbps. I ran the card diagnostics and it passed them. Is it really possible to use this low speed card with a hi speed bus? Don't I have to do something special for it to work on hi speed bus? Any sugestion is highly appreciated! thank you

    Hello Danut,
I was able to set up a Low Speed CAN card to talk to a High speed port on another computer( simulating a high speed device). I did not have any termination resistors on the cable. Initially, I saw the same Comm errors you mentioned and this was because the cable I was using was internally terminated. So please check that the cables are not terminated. Also , verify that the high speed device itself is not terminated ( measure the resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L, with the cable connected and without the cable).
Let me know if you were able to get the system up and running. Also do you have any low speed devices that can be used to test teh CAN card with?

  • Warp Stabilizer and Speed can't be used on same clip

...just my luck that on my first ever Premiere project (CS6) I'm building a timeline and need to use both the Rate Stretch Tool and the Warp Stabilizer on multiple clips. The message, "Warp Stabilizer and Speed can't be used on same clip" took me by surprise.
However, after research here on the Forum, I found a Workaround that I'm deploying:
"Apply the effects, nest and finally apply warp stabilize" Ann Bens
    Here's what I did:
In my only sequence -- Sequence 01 -- I highlighted a clip that I had already applied Rate Stretch to.
    chose Clip/Nest
This created a Nested Sequence 02 with the clip in it.
In Sequence 01, the clip now says, "Nested Sequence 02"
I applied the Warp Stabilizer to the Nested Sequence 02 clip and it worked. Both Rate Stretch and Warp Stabilizer have been applied to the same clip!
So I've done this like ten times to ten clips and now have 10 Nested Sequence folders.
    Questions:
    Are my step-by-steps correct?
Do I let these multiple Nested Sequences just keep piling up? (when I right click on a Nested Sequence and choose Clear, I get a warning message that I'm going to delete clip references)
Now that the workaround has worked, is there a way to close -- unlink -- from these Nested Sequence folders? If so how?
I am so Over My Head for a first project. I thought you could always compound Video Effects!
    NotOnSugarMountain

Best is to make a copy of the timeline or clips that you are going to multiple nest etc.
If you screw up you can easily replace nested clips etc with a copy from the copy you made.
There is an undo function but most of the time its not enough.

  • How do I set a low baud rate using a High Speed CAN board?

I have a PCI-CAN/2 board, and I want to use one channel for a 500kb/s network and one channel for a 33.333kb/s network but I keep getting a baud rate error.  Is it possible to use such a low baud rate or is there a lower limit?
    Thanks

I would recommend to post CAN related questions to this board.
According to page E-2 of the user manual, the min baud rate for a PCI-CAN high-speed CAN interface is 40kbps.

What Speed can I run on my PowerBook G4 1.25GHz Matshita DVD-R UJ-816 drive?
Can I run above the 2x speed, say if I bought some TDK 16x DVD-R would they work. Please can anyone help me.

Be careful of the Verbatim 16 X DVD-R. I just made 14 Coasters before I got the correct answer from Pioneer who supplied the DVD 104 Super Drive on my Mac even though I installed an A227 firmware update.
They will not burn reliably on my g-4 mac when running Mac OS 10.4.5. I can not burn these DVDs using Toast 7.02.
I have no problem with HP 8X DVD-RW or DVD-R though.
I checked with Pioneer on this and they were helpful explaining the inability of that drive to handle that disk with the present firmware version.

  • What transfer speed can I expect via wired ethernet?

3 iMac's wired to an AirPort Extreme....what transfer speeds should I expect?  I'm only getting 40-60MBps  IMac to IMac via Ethernet provides up to 70MBps. I am wanting to get a Thunderbolt Drive but worry that while the iMac that the Thunderbolt HD is plugged into will get much faster transfer rates, when access the Thunderbolt HD from another iMac on the network I will still be stuck with the 40-60MBps rate.  Surely there is a way to get faster network speeds than 40-60MBps?

Tesserax,   You are are correct, I was just hoping that there was some way to get better performance out of my network speed so that the $1500 Thunderbolt purchase was worth it.  What I now plan to do is get the $999 model R4 4-1TB just so I can have one since the iMac that the Thunderbolt HD will be plugged in to will be doing the most editing so in some ways it does help me....just not as much as I was hoping it would.  I can at least take my old FireWire HD and plug it into my iMac and use that for FCPX projects that are for more personal than business use.
Having only 1 HD that 3 iMac's can use to edit images from has really helped me out with keeping everything in order.
If you can daisy chain the Thunderbolt Drives I have to wonder why they didn't have it so 2 iMac's couldn't connect to 1 HD.  With 2 Thunderbolt ports on the iMac you would think you could connect iMacs together using 1 port on each then have the other port for like HD's, extra screens, etc You know what I mean?  If you are going to make this super fast port/cable you might as well make it to connect iMacs as well.

  • Insanely slow upload speeds with normal download speeds -- can anyone help?

I have done LOTS of troubleshooting and I'm coming up blank. I've just moved from CA to HI and have a new ISP, but other machines in the house are not having this issue. I'm having a very difficult time figuring out why I can no longer upload files larger than 1 mb without lots of network stalling and eventual timeouts using most upload tools.
    Here are the facts:
    * It's only the upload speed: downloading is just fine on this machine.
    * This machine WAS fine: No problem with uploads from this machine before I moved from CA. I've had it for about a year.
    * Not the new cable internet: We also have a brand new Macbook Pro AND a PC using the same modem and connection and neither have trouble with upload speed.
    * It's not the tool, the file, or the server I'm trying to upload to: have tried uploading various files, using various web interface tools, to different servers, (flickr uploader, blog upload tool,) including ftp from the command line -- same upload problems. Command line ftp doesn't time out like these other services, but takes a really really long time with lots of stalls (7:13 minutes for 2.1 mb?!)
    * File sharing over our network between this machine and the Macbook Pro are lightning fast.
    * Behavior is the same using airport OR built-in ethernet (even tried two different ethernet cables)
    * Behavior is the same whether I use our internet connection or 'borrow' bandwidth from a neighbor's wireless connection (although I'm pretty sure everyone around here uses the same service?)
It seems to be some strange combination of this machine and my connection? I am stumped and really need to be able to upload files for working remotely!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    thanks,
    Enola

So after MUCH research and back-and-forth, it appears that my problem here is the upload bandwidth provided by our ISP. They acknowledge there is a problem in our area with upload speed (download speed is excellent) and are apparently working on it. I am still baffled as to why this problem is so much more obvious on my mac mini than my husband's macbook pro, but I'm sure it has to do with all kinds of different variables. We both tried some speedtest sites like the one you mentioned, and we both get crappy upload bandwidth and lots of stalling. At least I know it's not that my machine has something terribly wrong with it. For now, I am making do!
    thanks for your advice!

  • EA4500 - can only access youtube, google at a very slow speed, can not access anyother website

    Got a new EA4500 for X'mas
After setting up the new router I could only access youtube and google at a very slow speed, however I can not access anyother website - facebook, yahoo and etc...
it would ping yahoo and google no problem
friend told me to do a tracert some ip address and his conclusion was the router is fully functional
ISP uses PPPoE, Im sure that the username and password are correct.
upgraded to the latest firmware manually, and holy hell accessing the router with no internet access is a pain in the **bleep**!
    Please help and Merry X'mas

I've made sure that both the EA4500 setting were the same as the WRT54G, did not solve the problem.
IP Address behind WRT54G is 192.168.1.103
    behind modem is 202.151.XX.XX
It might be a DNS problem. Release & renew ip on the status page of your router. Just make sure you are already using the latest Linksys smart wifi firmware, reset the router & reconfigure. You can download the firmware here http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/EA4500.

  • Slow ripping speed - can't figure out why....

When ripping at aac 128 or 160, I only get speeds up to 5x or 7x (depending if it's the beginning of the CD or the end). I cannot figure out why this is:
--The drive is rated at 24x read speed
--This happens with every CD I try
--The setting for both IDE contollers are DMA
--The processor is Core Duo at 1.83. When ripping only 50 to 70 percent of the processor is used.
    --7200 rpm hard drive
    --1 gig ram
    --error correction is not enabled
    --no other programs are running
Another problem is that while ripping, the computer becomes extremely slow - I can't even type! When I press a key it takes half a second for that letter to show up!
I have had other computers with much slower specs that ripped CDs to iTunes much quicker. What can this be??
Someone please help me, I have been trying for a while to get to the bottom of this, and I think I may be losing my mind.....

  • Warp stabilizer and speed can't be used in same clip.  explain error message please.

Learning - from how to capture to how to do basic edits.
Trying to use warp stabilizer on some hand-held footage and got the red "NO" message.
Can I still do this, or did I do my edits in the wrong order as in I should maybe have used warp stabilizer first or something.

I have used various stabilisers over the past ten years, and have always found that the best stabilisation results are achieved with the raw footage, unless this has very low contrast.  In that case it pays to apply a levels effect first.
I always export my stabilised clips to an intermediate file using a "lossless" codec before importing that new file into my project to replace the original footage.  I use the free download UT codec for this.  I have tried Lagarith and the free Avid DvxHD, but have had problems of one sort or another with each.
Speed changes never work well when the clip needs stabilising, in my experience.

  • VERY bad upload speed - can't use internet properl...

my download speed is between 3-5mbps my UPLOAD is 0.2mbs and this is causing me to get timeouts on pages around the web and in general internet use.
This has been ongoing for a few weeks and i need to try and get this resolved.
Please can someone from BT help.
    Thanks

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Serial baud rate vs. high speed CAN

The bottleneck in my current app is the serial writes at 115200, to a custom device.  The program dramatically improves in speed as the baud rate is increases.  If i remove the serial write and read, the program loop time improves from 100 to 2000htz
The device also has a CAN interface.  Im debating trying to use the NI CAN interaface card to see if there are improvments in speed but want to get an opinoin first since this will require considerable reprogramming.  The can card appears to be just two serial ports but yet, accoring to specs, appears faster.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/2732
Its difficult to try to compare serial and can speeds. CAN is up to 1mbits a sec while 115200 is measuring baud.  After considerable reserach to compare the two, i still am having difficulty. Im not sure these comparisions are even valid as Im more instrested in in sending one charcter and then recieving it rather than contual streaming of data whch is what these rates measure.

This is a custom servotube powered by an amplifier.  The servo has a renishaw encoder for 1um resolution. The application requires reading the position of the renishaw encoder every iteration.  This positional information is then logged into the data.  The position is independent of the feedback loop but it is important for the research. The feedback loop itself is determined by a strain gauge and 9237 module which compute loading forces of the servotube, and this is converted to analog output value via pid and then sent via an ni analog output module to the differential input on the amplifier.  The differential inputs on the amplifier will create a current (I) for the servotube value based on the voltage it receives.
The bottleneck only has to do with the serial port.  Reading the serial port can be accomplished with the serial or can interface.  Using the serial port, the commands to get the position and then read receive it back, can occur at a rate of around 350 iterations a second at the highest baud, 115200. This 350 iterations is if there is nothing else in the loop other than visa read and write of the serial port with no delays. Its the best case scenario and when the additional code is in place, we are getting more like 100 iterations a second.
So the baud rate speed dosent seem to apply?  It is really a delay in the send and receive each time the communication is initiated?  That is why the can interface might be better?    Programming the NI can card seems a little tricky and i want to be sure it will offer improvement before jumping into this task.
Maybe there is a chip or something NI has to read the position of the reinshaw on the available NI AD cards we have on the system.?  It would then reduce the bottneck?
