I have just purchased my ipad2 and it has taken me ages to set it up because my router wouldn't accept it. After finally setting it up I have just tried to download an app from the app store and am being asked for my I'd which I take is my email address and a password which I can't remember does anyone know where I can find my password

Tap and hold an app until they all start jiggling and an X appears in the icon's top left corner. One by one tap the X to delete the app. when they are all gone you are free to buy them again with your own account.

If you cannot reset your Apple ID password via security questions, you can reset via email authentication. If you are not receiving the email, it may be necessary to contact Apple Support using the link in the Get help section toward the bottom of the article.

Contact iTunes Customer support... it is not possible to bypass Activation Lock.

You can restore the device. That is what you have to do if you forget the passcode. You don't have to worry about syncing to your own computer either since you don't want to restore your data - you want to wipe it clean. Read these articles for more instructions

Sometimes you may not be able to bypass the passcode at all when you try to restore. You may need to restore by putting the iPad into recovery mode. I have heard from some users that they did not have to do this when they restore after forgetting the passcode - but just in case you need the information, this will help you with that procedure.
