  • Can I use an IPod to back up  Itunes, TV shows, and pics?

Can I use an IPod to back up the by Itunes, TV shows, and pics? Can I do a resotore off an IPOD? OS/X user...?
I have about 50GB or so of stuff I have purchased from Itunes and have not back it up yet. I looked into using DVD's and NAS devices, but I think I can also just get a new 80GB Ipod and use it as both a portable device and my main back up for my purchased stuff. Other files, like word and excel I back up using my .MAC I-disk, but the music and video files required much more space and bandwidth, so I have to back up localy.
If I have to do a restore, will I be able to restore off of an IPOD?

if you use the ipod in disk mode then, yes, you could use it to backup/restore files
but i'd never recommend using an ipod for this
great music player, but not something to rely on to keep your data safe
if you want a backup disk, get a dedicated external hard drive, it'll be way cheaper and a lot more reliable

  • IPod Music back onto iTunes

Looking back I think what I've done may be stupid. I've got a Powerbook G4 with 20G of space. So what I had been doing is burning my CD's onto iTunes, getting them onto my 20G iPod and then deleting them from iTunes. I was doing this so I could minimize the songs on iTunes (saving space theoretically) and keep them on the iPod instead. I got an external hard drive for Christmas, but now I can't get them back onto iTunes from my iPod (or onto the external hd for that matter). Any suggestions or am I toast? I have 1200 songs on my iPod so I'd hate to re-rip them all back onto iTunes from scratch.
    Thanks in advance.

There is many way to copy your muis back to your iTunes, my suggestion is to pick one of the following 3rd party software to do the copy..
    1. iPodRip
    2. Senuti
    3. Ollies iPod Extractor

  • Hard drive crash, need to get ipod songs back onto itunes

i'm a bit computer illiterate and need step by step instructions for how to connect my ipod without losing everything. if you've done this before and you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
i downloaded senuti but i don't know what to do from here...

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
Keith's iPod Photo Reader Mac only
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive

  • HT1689 I recently bought a new pc and my itunes library is now empty. How can I download my Ipod touch content onto itunes?

hi iant to know is as sson asap! thanks!

The ipod is not a backup storage device.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases.  File>Device>Transfer Purchases
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one

  • My old mac crashed and new hard drive has new Pages on it but I cannot open any documents.  Says to save on 09, I had 08 but it crashed when the computer crashed.  Now what?

Open with new Pages and it says my documents are too old, must be opened and saved in 09, but I don't have 09, just fragments of 08 from my crashed hard drive.  What do I do now?

Do you still have your installer DVD?
Reinstall iWork '08 and upgrade it to v3.03:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=432&mforum=iworktips ntrick
Then open your documents and Export them to Word .doc/x to open in Pages 5.2.
You can also ask Apple to supply you with iWork '09 so you can access your work.
If that is unsuccessful, since Pages 5.2 is a severe downgrade, missing 110 features, get the iWork '09 boxed set from Amazon for $19.99.

",the owner sold the ipod without clearing the songs and since the songs were not puchased from the itunes store then i believe i now own the songs"
    Not true at all.
It does not matter where the songs came from, they are not yours and the previous owner does not own the right to distribute them to others.
The law is the same with downloads and cds and any other medium.

  • Using Ipod to back up Itunes Library

If my PC crashes and I lose all my music files on my PC - can someone tell me how I can get the songs that I have previously syncronised onto my ipod Classic back onto the PC, for future use and management. I am worried that if, for example, I had to reformat my PC's hard drive, when the ipod syncs with the reformatted PC (that doesn't have any songs on it), it will delete all the songs on my ipod, leaving me with no songs. Or is the only alternative to back up the songs from my PC onto CDs? Seems a waste when they appear to already be "backed up" on the ipod, which effectively works as an external hard drive Your help will be much appreciated ! Alan

*I am worried that if, for example, I had to reformat my PC's hard drive, when the ipod syncs with the reformatted PC (that doesn't have any songs on it), it will delete all the songs on my ipod, leaving me with no songs.*
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
*Seems a waste when they appear to already be "backed up" on the ipod, which effectively works as an external hard drive*.
Unlike an external drive, you may find you have to restore your iPod to fix a problem with the software, restoring will erase the iPod's drive. If it's your only back up you risk losing everything. I would advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads more storage than you'll get on an iPod for a reasonable outlay.

  • HELP: I lost my Itunes after a PC breakdown. Can I move my IPOD files back?

    Hello,
After a computer crash I lost my Itunes and my music files. My IPOD Photo 60 Giga is working fine and I have reinstalled Itunes on the PC.
1)Can I transfer my Ipod files to my Itune?
    2) If yes how do I make sure that my Ipod does not lose all the information. What settings are required?
Thanks for your answers. I would like to start adding more songs to my collection and would like to hook back my Ipod to the computer.

1)Can I transfer my Ipod files to my Itune?
There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    PodPlus Windows Only
Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive through Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
    2) If yes how do I make sure that my Ipod does not lose all the information. What settings are required?
You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode in which case your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased. However when you connect if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.

    Hello bigali,
Your options are kinda limited. I would use this first:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and ...
Then check here for the non-purchased items:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022
You want to rebuild the library first, then sync the ipod.
Here is a good idea for when your done:

    Hope this helps.

Copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • How to I copy photos from my ipod classic back onto my pc?

How to I copy photos from my ipod classic back onto my pc? My hardrive recently crashed and the photos on my ipod are the only copies I have! The photos were synced onto th ipod originally - not saved or copied as file transfer.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. I'm not sure which of the recovery tools can do photos offhand, but unless you chose the option to include full res. originals when you loaded the device then what they extract will be fairly low res. If you did opt for full res. then they should be visible on the iPod's drive when viewed in disk mode.
