I have OS X 10.4.8 now. Should I upgrade???

Hi,
I have been hesitant to upgrade my system from Mac OS X 10.4.8 to anything higher because of various system issues in the newer OSs. I know 10.4.9 had issues with sending files over 2MB to a computer running classic as well as various problems concerning Final Cut Pro. Has Mac OS X 10.4.10 solved these issues? Are there any new problems in OS X 10.4.10 I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Video Guy

As for finding out if Final Cut Pro has the issues you are talking about in 10.4.10, I'd ask people in the Final Cut Pro forum who are more likely to have experienced it.
Issues upgrading that most people have are because they don't follow the steps I've written on this FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Not all are essential, but if you don't backup your data properly, if an issue should happen, downgrading is near impossible to do smoothly. And systems that have small issues may get larger when you upgrade. Only healthy systems should be updated.

I have iWork 08. I thought I might need a new version but I can't download that either (I get a message saying you have this already from the App store). I'm stuck. Can anyone help please?

Just reinstall and upgrade iWork '08:

  • I find I have software that needs 10.5, how should I upgrade?

10.5 is needed for many new iApp based devices, yet Apple no longer offers it on their web based store.  For people who have compatible computers they need to consider the following:
    1. iTunes latest version that works on 10.4.11 is 9.2.1, available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056
    2. Boot Camp only works on Intel Macs, not PowerPC G4 nor G5 Macs.
    3. Classic does not operate in 10.5.  This user tip does show what Macs allow dual booting of 9 and 10.5:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757
Otherwise you'll need to keep 10.4.11 or earlier to allow Classic compatibility either on an erase and reinstalled 10.4 partition, as described in the tip, and
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61301
or an external Firewire hard drive.  If you have an Intel Mac, this does not matter since it doesn't have any 9 compatibility at all.
    4. Apple may offer the retail version of 10.5 through its phone mail order, but not show it on their website.  Note this is the only version of 10.5 that will run on any Mac that shipped new prior to October 26, 2007.  System specific discs rarely if ever work on Macs that aren't the same vintage or model they were initially designed for.  And Up to Date discs were only available for Macs that were new October 8, 2007 to October 26, 2007.
    5. Macs need 512MB of RAM, a G4 processor with 867 Mhz (dual 800 Mhz doesn't count, and upgraded processors only count if the processor seller supports it), and a minimum of 9 GB of free hard disk space.  Arbitrarily an additional 15% free hard disk space has been found in addition to Apple's specs to suffice for fast smooth installations of Mac OS X.  I.e. 100 GB hard drive would have at least 24 GB free before their 10.5 installations are smooth.
    6. All upgrades necessitate backing up your data at least twice, checking for software and hardware compatibility, and shutting down the Mac, and disconnecting all but display, Apple USB keyboard/mouse (if desktop), before rebooting and installing the update.
    7. If your Mac is Intel, upgrading to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) directly is recommended, and if you have a Core2Duo or Xeon Mac, upgrading to 10.6, then 10.6.6 or later to get Lion (10.7) installed is recommended if you have software which supports it. Contrary to popular belief 10.5 is not needed as an in between installation to apply 10.6.  But 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8 presently are a minimum for installing 10.7.  10.7 no longer supports Rosetta though. So be prepared if you are in the market for it.  Snow Leopard requires 5 GB of hard disk space and 1 GB of RAM.  Lion requires 7 GB of hard disk space and 2 GB of RAM.  The same arbitrary 15% as mentioned in #5 is highly recommended for free hard disk space that is additional.  Be sure to inquire in the Communities before updating anything to find out about any additional pitfalls you may run into.

  • I have a "MacBookPro9,1" 15' non-Retina, should i upgrade to MAV OS X

are there any problems going on so far with it? hows graphic card and battery hold up?
Should i wait a little longer for fixes?

There have been complaints regarding reduced battery life on this forum among other items.  Whether that is pervasive is an open question.
Unless there are features that you are really enthused about, I suggest waiting.  However, if you do decide to install mavericks, you always have the option of reinstalling your current OS.

  • HT2305 have a notebook running 10.5.8 - should I upgrade the software or buy another computer?

Have a macbook runniing osx 10.5.8 should I buy a new computer or upgrade the software?

That's your choice. Without know what your exact model is here is the upgrade path for OS X:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
If your model is a plastic housed MacBook then I would buy a new computer. If you have a model from Late 2008 or later, then it's a matter of just how old it is. The last MacBook was in 2010, and that model would run Mountain Lion OK. Prior to that I would stick with Snow Leopard.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

My iphone 4s will no longer sync music from my music library on my Macbook Pro.  I also have a bunch of songs that now have a red circle with a box in it next to the song on my phone and those songs will not play.  They are present in my itunes library and I can play them on my Mac but they will not play on my iphone.  I have tried unchecking all the music and applying those changes and syncing and it does nothing.  All the same music remains on my phone, unchanged.  Help! What do I do? I have read to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it but will I lose all my music?

    Hello Courtney,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when syncing your music to your iPhone.  It sounds like iTunes is not able to locate the original file for the song to transfer it to your device.  I recommend reviewing the following articles to locate you music files on your computer:

    Hi Thomas,
I can confirm the problem you are hitting. The XML test trace does not get recognized at all, and it defaults to Eclipse's basic Open File behaviour. I am not sure if it's because the format definition is missing, or if it's because something prevents the trace type from being recognized. I will open a bug about it.
    Thanks for identifying this issue!
In the meantime, if you'd like to experiment with XML analyses, you can also take a look at the example at https://github.com/tracecompass/xml-analysis-example .

I have replied to you three times now without reply. I DID NOT authorise a payment of £9.99 for NowTV. What is the solution to getting my money refunded. I think you assume I will go away after being Ignored. No I will not go away. I find now that you have DISABLED MY APPLE ID. Is this a punishment you use to anyone who takes up a stand against charges being made unauthorised on their account?. Please tell me why you have disabled my account. When will my account be restored? If not when will you refund ALL my purchases made to APPLE/ITUNES? I can then move on to another brand and hopefully better customer service. After reading articles regarding APPLE ID DISABLED it appears common practice from your company to DISABLE anyone's account if they question unknown charges. Please reply with your intentions regarding  the unauthorised payment and the DISABLING of my account.

    Hi,
I have cancelled my CC membership but now when I want to open PS CS6, I get a CC box saying 'Renew my Subscription'.  My CS6 is nothing to do with CC and I cannot use it!  It's my work copy!  Please help Adobe!
I have gone into Adobe Installers: nothing there to uninstall CC.  Gone into Adobe Air, nothing in there to do with CC.  How can I completely unlink my computer from any old remnants of CC?  This is my work computer.  It has to be sorted!
    Thanks.

You might want to run the cleaner to remove all info.

  • I have purchased many movies on iTunes, now they are adding closed captioning or subtitles to those movies, BUT can not reload them so I can view those subtitles.  I am mentally disabled and need the subtitles.

Hello,  To start off, I have been a member of iTunes for awhile and have been content with them, until now.  I am legally disabled due to a head injury that happened when I was a teenager.  I am everyday functional, but I do need closed captioning(cc) or subtitles to understand the movie or TV show.  I have purchased lots of movies and TV shows from iTunes.  As any new business does, iTunes has updated itself and added features for their customers. They figure out what the consumers want and like.  I started to realize that iTunes added subtitles for the deaf and disabled, but as I was told by Apple there was nothing I could do about reloading those already purchased movies, to include the cc or subtitles.  Since then, I don't use iTunes and it's a real shame because I love electronics and it's technology.  I wish Apple would work with the consumer.  Why can't I reload the iTunes movies on my PC (Win7) with the subtitles, which they now offer, but didn't when I purchased them?  To me, that is wrong to do that to a customer.  Now that they are including cc/subtitles , everyone is able to enjoy iTunes and not be excluded.   Someone__please explain this to me.  Thank you for reading this.
    Carrie-

Untill the movie studios agree to allow past downloads of movies outside of the US, you aill always have to have a copy of purchased movies on your computer. If not, you will have to buy them again if you delete them.

  • I have no idea where to turn now...can someone help me?

Don't know who to talk to now so this will be long...... sorry:
So, in January I went to the Verizon store to either have them fix my Galaxy Mini 4 or maybe upgrade my edge for a new phone. So after looking everything over, I had decided I'd get either a Note 4 or the S5.
The sales kid came over and we discussed many options. Told me that I could indeed upgrade my edge and so I opted for the Note 4.  He then told me about the 'special promotion' that was going on and that I could get a 'free' tablet along with a year of Netflix.
I kept asking him 'Are you sure about the tablet?  I don't see anything written down about it' and again he assured me ... 'Oh yes, we have special promotions all the time'
Ok, so I agreed to the 'free' tablet and Netflix.  I asked how much it would change my bill... he told me about $10 more because I would be getting a credit each month of $25.
So then I asked, how much would I have to put down on this to walk out with these items... he says 'nothing, you are a customer in good standings'   Hmmm, ok... So, I decide that I'm going to put $75 on my account anyway...  Asked how much the total would be and he gave me a price of about $175 and some change.
He asked me if I wanted him to email me my reciepts and I told him yes and he confirmed my email.
So, after an hour, I walk out of there with:
    1. New Note 4
    2. 'Free' Tablet
    3. Case for Note 4
    4. Case for 'Free' tablet
    5. Screen protectors for 'Free' Tablet.
The next day... the 'Free' Tablet wouldn't turn on.  I had charged it all night..with the charger that was given to me... so I went back to the store and told them what was happening and they couldn't find my stuff.  They asked if I had my reciepts and I told them no I hadn't yet gotten them from the kid that helped me.  She looked further and said 'well your email isn't on your account that's why'.. Ummm no.. it was because the kid confirmed it before I left.
Anyway she finally found the purchase and tried to tell me that I had the wrong charger..told her... no..it came in the box.. End result, the tablet was bad, so they replaced it.
    Fast forward to my bill........
    Almost $600.00!!!!!!!!!  So I call
No one can find my $75 payment. BUT it's taken out of my bank. So I'm told that they would go and look for that payment and call me back.  AND I wanted to know why I had been charged almost $250 for 'equipment' purchase.  Well, come to find out... there was no 'special promotion' and I was charged for the 'Free' Tablet.  So, the rep told me she would look into this and call back.
I was too nice... I waited a week.....So again I tell the whole story and what this lady finds out is that I'm being charged for items that i never bought or have AND that the 'Free' Tablet was charged to my account at $80.00.  AND that my $75 was applied to all the 'extras' I bought that day!!!!
Now I told them I didn't need a **bleep** tablet... I have a perfectly good one at home, so why would I buy a new one?  He said and assured time & time again that it was free.....
Now I'm livid... she did call the store to find out what their take of it was, the kid that helped me wasn't in but he & the manager of that evening would be in the next day and the store manager was opening up an investigation on it.  Again... I'm assured a phone call the next day.... hmmmm.... 4 days later, I've got nothing!
No one from the store has called me to ask me anything, the lady that promised to call me back to check to see if they had called me hasn't called me back nor has she answered any emails that I had sent to her as she had requested.
Is this the new way that Verizon treats their customers??  I can't afford to pay my bill now because they're saying that I owe over $400.
I have no more places to turn to on this ordeal... so if anyone has read this whole thing... THANK YOU.... Does anyone have anyone's name or phone number so that I can try to get this rectified?
    I'm so done...
    Tina

"HOW AND WHEN CAN I DISPUTE CHARGES?
If you're a Postpay customer, you can dispute your bill within 180 days of receiving it, but unless otherwise provided by law or unless you're disputing charges because your wireless device was lost or stolen, you still have to pay all charges until the dispute is resolved. IF YOU DO NOT NOTIFY US IN WRITING OF SUCH DISPUTE WITHIN THE 180-DAY PERIOD, YOU WILL HAVE WAIVED YOUR RIGHT TO DISPUTE THE BILL OR SUCH SERVICE(S) AND TO BRING AN ARBITRATION OR SMALL CLAIMS CASE REGARDING ANY SUCH DISPUTE."

You can dispute any charges by doing an Arbitration or Mediation.  I have never done it, so I can not help much there but this all may get you started.

Have been using Lightroom on my Apple computer for years. Now, ever since upgrading to Apple's  Yosemite operating system I get an error message (150:30) every time I try to open a lightroom file. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Also how do I subscribe to Adobe's Premium Support? Every time I've tried (through contact support) I just get taken on an unending loop.

I think we need a lot more information.
Exactly what does the message say?
Exactly what files are you trying to open?
Exactly how are you trying to open them (what menu command or button or mouse action or keyboard shortcut)?
And lastly, what version of Lightroom are you using?
