I just backed up my 1TB (mostly full) internal hard drive to an external 1TB Time Machine drive, and it says I'm fully backed up. Why is the Time Machine drive only half full?

I have a 1TB internal drive in my MacBook Pro (15", mid-2009, running Snow Leopard). A couple days ago I decided to format my unused 1TB external drive and use it for Time Machine, so I could wipe/format my internal drive for the Mavericks upgrade I've been putting off. Time Machine backed up the entire drive, and it appears to have successfully worked! Except that Finder shows 157 gigs free on my internal drive and 463 gigs free on the external... I'm hesitant to erase everything in case some stuff didn't get backed up and might disappear. A Google search tells me that Time Machine doesn't compress files at all... so where the heck did those 300 gigs go? Is there really 300 gigs of stuff on my internal drive that Time Machine just decided didn't need to be backed up?

Unity Connection server MCS-7845-H2-ECS4 hard drives only half have power

I have 2 servers MCS-7845-H2-ECS4 which each have 8 hard drives. the 4 hard drives on the left are not powered up on either server. The last 4 hard drives all have green power lights. Is this normal operation? I thought I might have a failed controller in the first server and I ran over to check the other server, but its hard drives were exactly like the primary server. The server is running Unity Connection 7.1(5).
I checked them with the RTMT tool and I don't see any alerts about any failed hard drives or controllers. Please help

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one. See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD. Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select. Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows. Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items. That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full. I have already worked to free as much space on the HD as possible. How do I add an external HD and have the iMac read it as though it was part of the internal HD. I know about external HD for additional storage and I do have an external HD, but, it is so much easier to search the drive when it is internal than having to perform a search on the internal drive and then a search on the external drives. And, it is easier to save files to an internal drive so that I don't have to decide which external drive to use to save files. In other words, I want to add an external HD and have it function as though I had purchased a larger internal HD.

That is simply not possible. Every drive is a separate device. It cannot be used to extend an internal drive as though you had a seamlessly larger drive.
What you can do is to create a striped RAID array using the internal drive and an external drive. However, doing this will erase the internal drive and you will lose everything on the internal drive. Furthermore, installing Lion or Mountain Lion becomes a bit of a problem because you cannot create a Recovery HD on a RAID and this tends to make the installer choke. However, you can clone an existing Lion or Mountain Lion system to the RAID and designate the RAID as a startup volume.
I would not recommend the RAID solution, personally, but there are many who do. I prefer the basic solution of spending the money on a larger internal hard drive instead of an external hard drive.

The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons. Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.

Your system will likely fit just fine on a small fast 250GB SSD
What you have is lots of stuff that should not be on the boot drive, data and graphics or media files and libraries that should be moved to another drive.
If you are getting a message like this, STOP, off load files, make room, and make sure to have 15% free or more.
Do not try to move anything from system and its library and sub folders. Move your home user account and just leave the essential home library but move all the rest.
A full drive can have trouble finding free space segments and writing out updates to files and to the directory. And loss of directory means loss of where files are located and their segments.

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.

How do you move just your movies and tv shows to an external hard drive and have iTunes recognize that that is where that media is (keeping music on the internal hard drive itself and putting only movies and tv shows on an external hard drive)?

While you can do that, it is not a feature of iTunes. Put your movies on the external drive, then add them to iTunes by dragging the files to iTunes while holding the option (alt) key down so it leaves the files where they are located. I recently upgraded my internal hard drive on my macbook to a larger and faster model, my old one is still fine. I went to run a Time Machine back up and it starts a new back up even though its not supposed to. How do I get it to recognize the old / original back up instead of running a new full back up on the new internal hard drive?

Yes. As posted, to TM it's a new, different drive. TM will back it up. You cannot prevent it.

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.

If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

I purchased Apple TV. I had to upgrade my OS to Lion which I did. I cannot get Lion to open because time machine is backing up to two hard drives, my external hard drive and my internal hard drive. How do I just get the backups going to the external? thx

I have a desktop Mac. I bought Apple tv and wanted to connect my photos to the tv. I learned that I had to upgrade my OS as I didn't have icloud capability. I purchased and downloaded Lion. I cannot open it however, because when I go to select the hard drive to install Lion onto, the dialogue box says that I cannot open it in either my external hard drive or the internal hard drive because of the backups to time machine. I have tried the 'fix' of moving the backup folder to the trash and then putting it on the desktop, but I still can't access either one of the drives to install Lion. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The current OS is Mountain Lion 10.8.3, so I if the purchase was recent, that is what you should have.
It should be possible to see what disk space is being used by opening the Disk Utlity in the Applications>Utilities folder. It looks like both disks are set as TM disks:
If you have Time Machine backup of both the internal and external disks and want to rationalise the system to only backup one, then set the TM preferences>options to exclude volumes as required:
When you download the installer from the Apple Store (MAS) it will come up with a dialogue to run it. It will then ask which disk you wish to install the system on. Is this where you have got to, before it says they are both unavailable?

I have an Intel Core Duo iMac with a 320GB internal hard drive. I have a 500GB Digital Western external hard drive attached via firewire where I store my iTunes library and iPhoto library. I also use this drive for Time Machine to back everything up, this drive is unpartitioned.
Being stupid, I have only just realised that my Time Machine is not backing up the iTunes and iPhoto libraries as they are on the same drive as my Time Machine back ups. I do however keep a copy of the iTunes and iPhoto Libraries on another external hard drive (WD My Passport 320GB) just in case.
To back everything up, (Both internal and external hard drives) I intend to buy another external hard drive as my sole hard drive for Time Machine backups.
My question is, am I going about this in the right way? What size drive should I get? I was thinking 1TB but at the moment money is tight so 500GB might be all I can afford, will this be enough to back everything up? considering not all the drives are full.

Given you have 640gb total space, and the default TM backup mode is "Full" probably would not take too long to completely fill a 500.

Not sure what deals OWC is currently offering.
Given many of the 500gb externals on amazon are running around 100$, for as little as 17$ more, you can go to 1tb.

Installed Samsung F3 1TB internal Hard drive configuration partition

Have just installed a Samsung 1tb internal hard drive and now it comes to formatting and partitioning it not sure what amount of gb and how many partitions to do. I have all my itunes music and films stored on an external 1tb hard drive for information, and also have an external 320 gb drive for back ups. So any ideas what to do with the partitions and gb on the internal drive.

There will be a lot of views on how the drive should be partitioned, so I will offer my opinion, and state it is only one opinion.
Take a look at the amount of space you have been using for your operating system, are you planning on upgrading the OS, and then set a partition for only the OS. Make it large enough to allow for future upgrades, maybe 30-40 GB larger than needed so there is enough space for doing installs.
Keep a partition large enough for all of your software, maybe have that be most of the remainder of the drive after the OS partition.
Since you keep music, etc., on an external drive it should be easy to keep the internal drive in good shape and unfragmented.
You could set a partition for temporary files, the /tmp file system, but it is easy to fill that up with a lot of web surfing and get yourself in trouble on space.
Anyway, my view is a good size partition to allow for OS and future OS installs, and the rest for software.

Congratulations on your new Mac! It sounds like your purchased songs are not playing completely after you downloaded them. I recommend to following steps for an issue like this:
Symptoms
Occasionally, if a song purchased from the iTunes Store on a Mac or PC was not downloaded completely, the song may not play back fully. The song may abruptly stop during playback, and iTunes may start playing the next song in your library or playlist.
Resolution
If iTunes in the Cloud is available in your country, try the following steps to resolve the issue:
Delete the purchased song that is exhibiting the problem from your iTunes library.
Click on the Purchased link in the iTunes Store to view your previously purchased music.
Download your previously purchased song from this list.

TC not backing up both of my internal hard drives.

So I am having a frustrating issue with my TC setup. I have a mac mini that has two internal hard drives each one being 500 GB. My TC drive is 1 TB. When I go to time machine preferences and click options I do not have any of my internal drives in the exclude lists. In fact it says that the estimated size of full backup is 733.31 GB which seems to imply that TC would be backing up both internal drives to my one external TC drive.
The problem is when I enter time machine and click on my second internal hard drive all the files are greyed out. I can see them all there but can't do anthing with them because they are grey. This is not the case for the main system drive.
I refered to this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2022065?threadID=2022065&tstart=0 and checked in the disk utility to see if all the drives were in the proper format. Indeed all my drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). At this point I have no idea why all the files in my second internal hard drive are greyed out when I enter TC. I would greatly appreciate any help with this issue.

Did you change something in the setup after the TM had been running for a while.. is it running Lion server still?

Some of these kinds of things are really complex.
Are you running the widget as that might show what is happening. See A1 reference above.
Is enough of the TC hard disk used up to suggest the backups have been working.. ie if the estimated backup size is 733GB is at least that much disk space used. If not it could be that TM has already not got enough space to back up the second drive.. although it should spit out an error message.
I would strongly recommend you buy CCC or some other decent backup software, and create a full clone of the boot drive and full backup of the second drive .. you can plug in a 1TB USB drive.. and save it all. Then if something goes wrong you have the server up and running again immediately. (You may have already done this, in which case please excuse the comments).

Problem backing up multiple internal hard drives to external

SITUATION:
We have 4 internal hard drives dedicated to media + another running the programs. The FCP projects are all saved on one of the media hard drives which also has captured media on it. The other 3 media drives hold the rest of the media for these projects. I have copied them all, one hard drive at a time, onto a La Cie external hard drive.
PROBLEM:
When I go into the La Cie drive, double click on HardDrive1 and open a project, the only "on line" clips in the browser are from the HardDrive1. It can't seem to link up to the media on the other three hard drives even though all the media is there.
QUESTION:
Anyone know how to set up the La Cie disk so that the projects on HD1 can find all their media from the 3 other media hard drives?

Your recent post would indicate that you have 7 harddrives inside your Mac.?.?. I think I understand what you have going on, and may be able to help, but it'll take a bit more info...
Are each of the 'desktop icon' harddrives individual harddrives, or partitioned HDs. If any are partitioned, can you tell me which?
I understand PROMAX has a good name, so I'm inclined to believe that whatever they did, was done properly and with good reason.
Anyway, I copied all of these hard drives onto the LaCie starting with the FCP HD and set that one up as a "bootable" hard drive. The rest followed, one HD at a time (took forever!).
"I copied all of these hard drives"... How did you copy...CCCloner? MediaManager, Drag and drop. This may be part of the issue...a little beyond my scope, but let us know how you copied the drive contents from internal to Lacie.
Can you open any of the 'non-findable' clips on the Lacie in QuickTime..just to make sure they're on the drive and usable?
When you open FCP on the lacie (and it only connects to files from same 'drive')...do you get the normal 'reconnect media' prompt, or are you getting a window that says 'The movie file "------" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly.
If the standard 'reconnect media' prompt..., have you tried selecting 'reconnect' then when that window comes up select, 'search' and uncheck 'Matched Name Only'...keep 'Reconnect all files in relative path' checked as this will link all files from that drive at the same time.
Try this and post back.
