I just bought CS5.5 "Upgrade Version"

I downloaded CS5 through my university and no longer have access to my serial number since I have graduated, therefore I can't install CS5.5 Upgrade Version.
Can I use a friend's CS4 serial number in order to activate/install CS5.5 on my new desktop computer?

It is possible to download many versions,the crucial part is the licence/registration number.
If you have or acquire a licence you can get access to an older version as shown below. If you buy a second hand version, make sure to get a licence transfer through Adobe:

I just bought the CS5.5 Design Premium software with the intention of installing it on a new desktop Mac, which has no Creative Suite software installed on it. The box says "Upgrade Version" though - does that mean that I HAVE to have CS5 installed before I can use CS5.5?

You don't need it installed, but you do have to have the CS5 serial number as it will ask for it.

Can I transfer/sell an upgrade version

I've moved to CC and have CS5.5 UPGRADE VERSION for Mac in the box, that I had used previously. Is there any problem with selling that now that I've deactivated it from my system? I don't want the next user to have trouble.

There will be a problem if the person you sell/transfer it to does not have a qualifying older version that will allow them to use the upgrade version.

I am so sorry I am frustrating you. This is the first time I have used this community and am leanring as I go. I am not able to see the entire post that you leave, unless I look at it on my phone (email)--I am so sorry. You have no idea how much i appreciate your help. Yes, I see that I can get the later version of OS software, but its not availabe for immediate download. My only options appear to be having it shipped, or going to the store to purchase. And if you know of another way that I can access all of my itunes library music on my new phone withouth using itunes, I would love to hear about it.--thanks and again i am so sorry for frustrating you.

I have CS2 and just bought a new iMac, do they have a downloadable upgrade or do I need to buy a newer version?

Hi David,
You need to download CS6 Photoshop and enter the serial number for CS6 Photoshop and then you would be prompted to enter the serial number for qualifying product.
Enter the CS5 serial number in order to install and activate CS5 Photoshop on your machine.

You need Snow Leopard before you can go to Lion...

No, sorry. It was only ever available on Disc. You can search places like eBay or Amazon for a Retail Copy. Do not get the Grey Set as they are machine specific. I don't think 10.5 will let you do much more than 10.4 as you said you needed at least 10.6 which is not possible due to the age of your Mac.

Very helpful. Unfortunately, when it came to the point that the install asked for the earlier version, it said it was not a valid upgrade version. In seeking an answer to this problem i went onto Adobe chat and was informed that

Chris: hmmmm. everything i read is that the upgrade version was for cs2. i just purchased it because the computer i had died and i bought a new one. i knew that my upgrade to CS5 version wouldn't work without an earlier version so I bought CS2 on ebay just two weeks ago. what can i do?
Laishram: I am sorry CS2 is not a valid upgrade path to the CS5.
I couldn't get more info from Laishram as to WHY is wasn't a "valid upgrade path" and I don't know what "not a valid upgrade path" means but, i'm guessing that i did something wrong when purchasing CS2. I was told that i could use the upgrade version(of CS5) that i purchased (to upgrade FROM CS2 to CS5) to upgrade to CS 6. So I'll have to do that I reckon.
