I need to format a new external drive, then need to copy old external to new external

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the new drive. If the old external drive doesn't contain a bootable Mac OS X system or a Time Machine backup, you can just drag its contents to the new drive. If it does, use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

  • Transferring music to new mac air using external drive: next steps after copying iTunes file to music folder?

I've followed instructions to consolidate, copy to external drive, then copy iTunes folder to Music folder on new mac air.  so...
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?

Exactly what steps did you follow?
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    It's on your old computer.
What do you want to do with it?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?
If you copied the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer then you simply need to open iTunes.
Since it is the exact same library, everything will be there as it was on old computer.

  • Had to get new hard drive and need to reinstall iTunes

My very new PC went beserk and I had to get a new hard drive. Everything off the old drive is irretrievable. I have my iTunes library backed up to an external drive (everything is also on my iPod). However, I don't want to have to "count" the new computer as one of the five machines on which I can copy my iTunes library, since it's not technically a "new" computer but just a replacement of my not-so-old one, which was barely 9 months old before it went kaput. Is there a way to reinstall iTunes and my library without getting dinged for yet another transfer of the library? Thanks.

Hi I can't figure out how to post a question of my own, so I'm asking it on this one because it is close to mine.
I just switched from a Sony Viao to a MBP, and tried to transfer my ITunes library from the Sony to my new MBP using a USB stick. I put all the music in my music library onto the stick, it said that it used 4.99 GB, and when I tried to put the music onto my MBP it only added 1.98 GB.
I thought that maybe the music it wasn't transferring was the music I purchased on my earlier laptop, but it transfered a few of my movies that I purchased off of ITunes. Please Help?

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Deleting photos from external drive when referenced (not copied) to iPhoto

Hi, I've seen similar posts, but none of them really answers my question.
I have an external NAS drive with RAID, where I keep ALL my data, because I use number of ways to access them. I also have my photos there. I recently bouht MAC MINI and I want to use it to organise my photos. Because I have only 80G drive on MAC, I choose to import the photos from the external drive to iPhoto, NOT copying them to it's own library but rather referencing them only.
Now the question I have - When I delete a photo in iPhoto by putting it to Trash and then empty the trash, the file still stays on the external drive, although it disapperas from iPhoto library. This is uselesss to me, because I WANT the file to be deleted from the external drive (orginizaing the files, right?).
The only way I found I can do this is clicking on the file in iPhoto, selecting "find file on disk" then deleting the file from disk, then deleting from iPhoto, one by one. That is no way to do it, I would rather use Picasa instead, although I like iPhoto more, I think it is superior in almost everything else.
One more question: is there a way to see a list of directories imported to iPhoto?
    thanks,
    J.

    J.
What I need is to delete the file when I "look" at it,
Use a File Organiser. That’s what they are for, organising files. Other than that, if you’re using a database application such as iPhoto then you have to use the application to manipulate the data.
    You ask a question:
But I am still wondering why isn't there any setup option to actually allow iPhoto to delete referenced files.
    and the answer
I know it may cause some problems for some user,
iPhoto is firmly focussed on the home user with a point and shoot camera. It’s very effective at what to does, but it does very simple things. Any setting that could lead to inadvertent data loss is avoided. (There are occasional posts on the forum from folks who uncheck that ‘Copy Files to Library on Import‘ setting but who then don’t actually move the files from the camera. They wonder why iPhoto has “lost their photos“.)
You mention that you’re using the NAS so that access your photos in a number of ways. IF you can tell us what ways you use, perhaps we can help.
I just need to know which directories I imported to iPhoto.
How are these directories organised? Named?
    Regards
    TD

  • Transfer itune library to external drive then back to PC

In preparation for the re-install of Windows on my machine I would like to save my itune library on an external drive then to reimport it. I have more music than my current iPod can store so can't use it for the transfer and my Pc can only burn CDs the external drive option looks the best...if only I'd know how to!

Be careful you don't make the mistake I did, if your operating system is changing (e.g. XP to Vista) this will only partially work as the paths will be different, you will end up losing your playlists at the very least.
I don't really know any way around this, a couple of people did give me some tips in a previous post that I wrote but Apple deleted it because it was critical, so they are now lost too.

    Hello Lakesidetom,
It sounds as though you are experiencing an issue with an Apple ID and authorizations. Based on your post, it sounds like you are familiar with the authorizing and deauthorizing process. The Apple ID in question (your wife's email) may be originating from the iPhone you are attempting to update. Is it possible that your wife created an Apple ID or iCloud account which is signed in on that iPhone? Below, I have included links to some resources that may help you determine if your wife has created an Apple ID:

  • New computer,  want keep ipod music from old computer to new?

new computer,  want keep ipod music from old computer to new?

    Hi mtscott41,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have music on an iPod from your old computer. You now have a new computer but do not want to have the music from the iPod erased when you sync to the new computer. If the music on your iPod was purchased from iTunes you can either transfer those purchases from the iPod to your new computer’s iTunes Library or you can download the previously purchased content directly to your iTunes Library from iTunes. Please use the following article as reference for transferring purchases.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
The following article will show you how to download all of your previous purchases directly to iTunes if you would like to proceed this way.
    Download past purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If the music on your iPod was not purchased from iTunes and you still have the old computer, you may want to use a process called Home Sharing to transfer that content to your new computer. The following article explains Home Sharing.
iTunes: Setting up Home Sharing on your computer

    I hope this helps,
