I only use Safari but keep getting a message saying I need to update MS Explorer

How do I stop getting pop-ups saying MS Explorer is out of date?  I only use Safari. The pop-up started a couple of days ago and comes at irregular intervals. It seems to appear only when I visit certain websites, but I am not sure about that.  At any rate, when I leave the pop-up, it kicks me out of the website I was visiting.   I have not downloaded anything as I fear it might be Malware, especially since I've had my IMAC for several years, it is up to date according to the "Check for Updates"  and I have never gotten this pop-up message before.

Hello again Carolyn,
I have waited several days now and the problem has not returned!  While cleaning up my Cookie Folder, I deleted  anything I didn't recognize including some caches and that seems to have solved the problem. To be sure, I have not finished cleaning up the cookie folder yet - I only got through the files that began with C.
Thanks for the link - it pointed me in the right direction.
By the way, I never downloaded the so-called Windows Explorer Update and that may be the reason why the problem was fixed.
- Bear
