I plugged my ipad into laptop said there was an update - it started running I came back to ipad to see itunes symbol on it with the usb lead symbol, it won't do anything

tried doing an update now the ipad just says itunes with the usb (charger symbol under it )
I have tried turning on and off but it still doesnt work - it is still connected to my laptop - I disconnected etc and still not good.
What do I do??

You probably need to restore your iPad now since the update did not complete properly - and you more than likely need to use recovery mode. This explains how to do that.
