You're phone is locked to a carrier. You will need to contact the carrier you got you're phone from to have them unlock it.

You do not need to "sign up" for downloading updates. Just run Software Update and let it access them directly thru the App Store.

After the Apple logo appears, what happens then? Can you hear any sounds or if you tap on the screen, does it seem like apps can open or are you just seeing a black screen? You might have a hardware problem, but you can try restoring the software and see what happens.
Read this in its entirety before you do anything. Make sure you read the sections at the end about using recovery mode.

The usual reasons for an Apple ID getting disabled are either unauthorized activity or violations of the Terms & Conditions.
Submit your request to iTunes Customer Service and if appropriate, they will re-enable it.

I took my iPhone to AT&T after I tried to update to iOS 6 and the phone said I needed to insert the original sim card which was what was in the device. AT&T said to take it to apple because it had to be a software issue. Provided you used BootCamp to do the installation, with your machine off, press and hold down the "Option" key while turning it on. Hold the key down until you get the screen where you can select which OS to boot into. Select OS X (you'll need to physically click the button here... tapping won't work if you have it enabled). Once in OS X, go into System Preferences and Startup Disk. This is where you set the default OS to boot into. Change it to OS X. Relaunch BootCamp Assistant to remove the failed installation of Windows. You can try again if you wish.

APPLE´S SOLUTION LISTED DOES NOT WORK.
THE STATE THAT AFTER RESTORING PHONE IN UPDATED ITUNES, PHONE WILL GET A NEW VERSION THAT WILL ELIMINATE THE NO SERVICE AND NO SIM CARD INSTALLED.
BUT AFTER DOING IT 5 TIMES, CHANGING SIM CARD 2 TIMES AND STILL SAME ISSUE.
HOPE TO HEAR SOON FROM APPLE. A LOT OF SILENCE.
AND STILL A LONG WAY TILL THE PROBABLE IOS UPDATE ON MARCH 9TH. AND ONLY HOPING IR WILL REALLY FIX IT.
IF NOT, THIS IS A USELESS PHONE AND ONLY AN ITOUCH.

Apple's solution listed does not work.
Apple state that after restoring your iphone 4s with the new version, it will fix the problem.
But after reading many other posts like mine, and trying it myself 5 times, the problem does persist.
Hope to see a real solution from Apple soon. Hopefully in ios 5.1

we have had our Iphone for some time and always received the complete email with headers and text below without a problem - since coming to the mountains of Montana, it worked fine but now we receive the headers TO FROM SUBJECT etc but no text shows up - what could be the problem? Images can be viewed when inserting compact flash card but many just black when imported. What's up?

When I insert the compact flash card containing 158 images (Raw+jpeg Fine) into the Mac I can view all images, however after I import them only about half of them can be viewed. The remaining images are blacked out even though the info for each image is available. The card was reformatted prior to use. What do you think the problem might be?

Upload off the flash card to a folder on your Desktop (can be done with Image Capture) and see if they can be viewed with Preview. If the can launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import the photos and test to see if the same problem persists.
Also make sure that the RAW files from your camera are supported by the operating system and iPhoto.
