I recently upgraded from a 2010 macbook pro to a 2015 model, loading my current CS4 software on to the new machine, working in Indesign is OK with all my fonts but when exporting to a PDF, the PDF just shows those binary boxes (probably not the correct te

Need help in determining the cause of files that use InDesign fonts, when converted to PDF do not pick up the font thus showing just box characters.

CS4 is not supported on Yosemite, and unless you did a clean install (rather than a migration) on the new system there is little chance it will work.

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between  Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated

  • HT201343 Can I upgrade my mid 2010 macbook pro to use airplay?

Can I upgrade my mid 2010 macbook pro to use airplay?

    Unfortunately, no you can't.
Just to be clear.  Your computer will support AirPlay it's just AirPlay Mirroring that requires newer hardware.

  • My 2010 Macbook Pro keeps crashing- Cant diagnose if its Hardware or software

    Hello,
This is my first post in the community. I apologize if this is a repeat question but I have looked through other threads and could not find a solution.
My mid 2010 Macbook Pro 4GB Ram 120 GB SSD i5 keeps crashing for no reason. It crashes at completely different times and is not consistent. Sometimes if i am opening a new tab or multitasking, even if i am typing a document or copying and pasting text the mac would just randomly crash.
At first I assumed it was a software problem so I deleted all files on the mac and installed the new OS yet the problem still continued. I have realized that if I do less tasks at a time it crashed less frequently but this is a mac and Im sure it is not normal if I can't do research and write a paper at the same time.
Below is the report of one of the crashes. It would be great if someone could tell me if this is a software or hardware issue as I don't have warranty anymore and may need to purchase a new computer because I can't count the amount of times it has crashed while I was doing an assignment.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

  • I recently upgraded to Yosemite on MacBook Pro - unable to open iPhoto and Photo Booth

I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro (bought in 2011).  Since the Yosemite upgrade, I have been unable to open both iPhoto and Photo Booth at all.  I have lots of photos and need to access them. Both icons of iPhoto and Photo Booth have a circle with a bar across them, in my dock.
When I click on iPhoto I get the message " In order to open “iPhoto”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store".  I have tried upgrading iPhoto on the App store but get an error message "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store" .
Since I cannot even view my photos, I cannot store them elsewhere.  Please, can someone help me resolve this problem!!!
For Photo Booth, when I click on it, it says "You can’t use this version of the application “Photo Booth” with this version of OS X. You have Photo Booth 3.0.3" - gives me no option to upgrade at all.
Would appreciate help for both iPhoto and Photo Booth issues described above, with iPhoto being the most pressing concern. Thank You.

The new app is called Photos. It's icon was added to the Dock. Both, Photos and iPhoto, are located in your Applications folder.
If you need to upgrade iPhoto, follow these instructions prepared by Barney-15E: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8431

  • Memory upgrade on mid 2010 MacBook pro 13.3"

I decided it was time to upgrade the original 4GB memory in my mid 2010 2.4 ghz core 2 duo 13.3 inch MacBook pro and bought a 2X4GB pack from PNY. Unfortunately the memory is not reconized and my laptop doesn't start when using both 4 GB sticks. However when I use only either one of the new 4GB and one of the old 2GB sticks it does start up and reconizes 6 GB of memory. So both new sticks are reconized separately just not together. I tried reinstalling the two 4GB sticks together multiple times to ensure they were installed properly. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem is your memory.  It's not the correct kind.  You need to purchase another brand that is known to work in Macs, of which PNY is not.  Dual ranked dual channel memory of good quality is what's suggested.  Crucial or Corsair is your best bet.  Cheap memory you find at retail stores won't work 100% of the time.  Another user who bought cheap Kingston memory like you had exactly the same problem.  Each module would work fine paird with an older one for max 6GB, but both new 4GB modules wouldn't work together.

  • Trying to restoring a late 2013 macbook pro from a 2010 macbook pro

Hi I have problems with my 13"retina macbook pro from late 2013.There is something on it that makes it 4 times slower in boot up than the other two  one from 2009 and 20010 all are running 10.9.5, so I thought I would clone one of them that has all the programs I need on it .
Having cloned it with ccc to a external hard disc and testing to see  that it boots, witch it dose in the machine it was cloned on, but when I tried to boot from it on the retina it will not.
Any one who could shed some light on why this is so would be very welcome.
    Thanks
    Chrisus

anything that shipped with a 2.5" form factor SATA Hard Drive can be upgraded to an Apple or aftermarket 2.5" form factor SATA "SSD-in-a-can".
the early SSD-only MacBook Air models shipped with a "stick" form factor SSD-ONLY in a special SATA socket. No room for a 2.5" form factor Hard drive. OWC and perhaps some others developed some aftermarket "drives" that are compatible.
I think it is only the 2013 models MacBook Air and MacBook Pro and Mac Pro (that do not have a 2.5" hard drive option) that made the leap to the "stick" form factor with a PCIe connection with a different special connector.
These PCIe SSDs are really fast, possibly on the order of 800 MBytes/sec. Compare to a 7200RPM Hard drive's 125 M Bytes/sec burst.

  • I've upgraded from PC to MacBook Pro and iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4 - HELP!!!

I am currently using a PC and have my iPhone 3GS synced to that unit.
I decided to upgrade my PC to a MacBook Pro two days ago and have received my new iPhone 4 today.
My question is – how am I able to get my current iPhone 3GS back up that is on my PC on to my new MacBook pro so that I can sync my music/contacts/notes/messages etc to my new iPhone 4?
I have avoided syncing my current iPhone 3GS to the new MacBook as I knew I would be receiving my iPhone 4 this week.
Please help – Losing my iPhone data is not an option as I have extremely important contacts/text messages that I need to keep for legal reasons. I really do not want to have to lose all of my data because I have upgraded and purchased better technology from your company.

    I found this article:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/
but I don't know if it's got everything you that need. I think that your phone's back-up is in the files listed in the article, but I'm still a newbie myself, and so far, this is the closest fitting article that I've found. I wish I could be more assistance, I hope that article is of some help. You might want to try running a search here... there's a box to the right which will search all the discussions for the keywords you've included. I'm pretty bleary-eyed, so I may have missed a better hit than this one.
Hopefully a more experienced user will log in later this morning and see this... good luck!

  • Upgrading from powerpc to macbook pro

I have a very old, but fully functioning version of Photoshop on my PowerPC. I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro and would like to find out what my options are for upgrading to my new computer.

Thanks Chris. I guess what I would like to know is whether the registered version I purchased, and I currently own, has any value with regards to buying an more current version, compatible with this new MBP? That is, do I have to buy a completely new version for full price (or CC), or can I purchase some sort of an upgrade?
I hope I am managing to ask my question clearly. Before I buy a full-priced new version, I'd like to see if I can get a discount of some sort since I already own a registered version. I won't be surprised if the answer is no.
    Thanks!

  • RAM Upgrade for Mid-2010 MacBook Pro?

I have a mid-2010 15 inchMacBook Pro with 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB of RAM. I've put OSX Mavericks on it, and it's painfully slow. I reaize it was probably a mistake to upgrade to Mavericks on an older machine. I'm too lazy to roll back the operating system but was wondering if upgrading the RAM might help. Appreciate thoughts on this. Also, how much RAM can go into this machine?

melophage has a 2010.  so i would think that he's had some experience.
I have a 2011 MBP so my specs are probably different, however, mine was set max at 8g.  I did some researching and found that my particular model can accept 16g.  some could not, and there was a lot of anxiety that I had, in making that jump LOL.  But like whywutt, I went to crucial and got their confirmation on my model.  I got the type they indicated, which abrody is very adept, if you get it wrong, it can cause complications.
further some did and it didn't work.  and it may not work for your model.  but doing the research is what had me going, dipping into some forums, doing some reading.  not relying on just a post.  going to crucial, making the double checks, helped me correct a potential error I almost made during ordering.
i broke a sweat putting them in and powering up.  its worked.  and i had a few little glitchy things here and there.  but with some updates, some recognition of the memory heavies.  my basic issue is rising heat.  but for regular programs, i can use the machine with similar speed to my thought process, which is very scary.  lol
however, i rock with 16g.  LOL. I wouldn't want to gloat if you cannot upgrade to 16g  but if you couldn't, and you really want maverick, popping up to a late 2011 might be an upgrade choice, since there's hard cut offs by year on older models, which I absolutely despise that issue with manufacturers.  but the 2011 has graphics, like others above say.  so really part is the memory.  the other part is graphics.  duo to quad etc. etc.
but do more asking.  search on your unit.  see what your options are.  and you are doing that.  that's a great step.
i prefer maverick, hate the name, lost some things that I loved.  but overall, iOS compatibility.....
and you know on my older mac, i have a 2009/2010 white case, and yah, it didn't reach the speeds and processing that I personally required, and always had glitches, and funky electronic cul-de-sacs in working the machine.  mainly when you start wanting to do things like run parellels and windows, or you have a project and you need this plus that, but you are misisng a component.  i don't have those issues now.  not nearly as much LOL.
but I lost all my old adobe apps.  adobe totally cut me off.  not interested in moving forward with adobe for the buy in and live comfortably without it.
so there are some things that i mull through and remember, when I was in your chair, making similar comparisons in what to do and how to do it, and modifying my machine.  i upgraded.  i'm glad i made the jump.  but if you can't, there's probably some work arounds to assist you living with what you have and that's not a bad thing.  i did want to live with what I had. anyways.  good luck.

  • Should i upgrade from early 2008 macbook pro or wait until 2015?

    Hi,
I'm debating on whether to bite the bullet now and buy the new macbook pro (15 inch) or wait until next year. i know this is practically obsolete in Apple years, but it actually still runs ok for my purposes (not used for work). I added RAM to 6 and am currently running Yosemite. I've read that many people keep their original macs for years. Advice helpful. Thanks!

Do you NEED  new computer for any particular reason or is this just a "Want"?
If you need a new computer NOW then buy one. If not then wait.

  • I have hundreds of photos on my computer but when I try to click on them it shows a grey box with an exclamation mark.  How do I get the program to let me edit and use the photos?

I have hundreds of photos on my computer but when I click on the photo all that comes up is a gray screen with with an exclamation mark.
These are the last photos ever taken of my husband and I need to know how to recover them properly.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
