If it is an Apple cable it should have come in a white Apple box with an Apple label. If it didn't it is not an Apple cable. You can buy Apple cables at any Apple store or Apple's online store. There are also high quality cables from some of Apple's business partners such as Griffin.
For a 3GS most cables should work, Apple or not. This is not true for the iPhone 5 and later. So the problem may not be the cable; inspect the connector on the bottom of the phone; if it is full of lint, dirt or moisture try cleaning it. Also look for bent pins.

To see all the photos on the phone, including photos that have already been imported into iPhoto, deselect the "Hide Photos Already Imported" checkbox. If the camera contains photos that have already been imported into iPhoto, those photos are hidden by default.

Follow these steps to log into your iCloud account on your computer and deactivate "Find my iPhone" on your device:
Remove an iOS device or Mac on which you can’t turn off Find My iPhone
If you can’t turn off Find My iPhone on the device, turn off the device so it goes offline, then remove it from Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.
Note: You can also remove your iOS device by first erasing it—just follow the instructions below for removing an iOS device you don’t have. You can later restore the device from an iCloud or iTunes backup.
Turn off the device you want to remove.

I've downloaded iTunes on this computer but now nothing happens when I plug my phone in the USB port.

I had a software update on my phone and tapped it to start the update then decided to cancel it. Now it will not let me back in my phone and has a picture that is telling me to plug into iTunes. I had to download iTunes on this computer first because it wasnt on this computer. It has downloaded, but nothing happens when i plug my phone up to the USB port in my computer. Hi please help I have an Iphone 3 G S it is using the 5.1.1 ios upgrade which it has had for sometime although there was a minor update last evening ? My phone worked fine until arround 1 pm today then it stopped getting mail from my hotmail account along with the hotmail I am not longer able to see any updates to my calendar and most of my contacts have dissapeared. I have tried reconfiguring the hotmail account, deleating it, and putting it back on, and changing the password but none of these has worked. I know hotmail is working from my computer and it also working from another app I downloaded to the phone just now ( mail pro) but it still says connection to the server has failed?

Click on your Hotmail account in Settings, click on the blue arrow and Forget this Network and try signing in again.

It certainly would not hurt to let the folks at the Apple store take a look to verify things. If the product is less than a year old, or you have AppleCare on one of your Mac, the Express may qualify for free replacement.
The Apple Store may also some some refurbished Express devices on hand at a discount if you need to buy, or they can direct you to the Apple online store for the same thing.

So when you plug it into your computer, you're not getting a message in iTunes that it has discovered a phone in recovery mode?
Reboot both the computer and the phone and try again.

the phone says it is not charging even though it actually is. Check and see if that's the case. A very underhanded trick by Apple so they can charge 10 times what the cable is worth. They do not win admirers by that proprietary trickery.

Your iPhone is in recoverty mode at the moment so to possibly get it back up and running you would need to do a restore as you have been trying. Follow the steps in the article below for the specific error messages you have been receiving. I read of a work-around to stop this, but it does not meet my needs. The work-around is to change your USB connection option from "mass storage device" to the one of the options about uploading pictures. This would not work for me because I'm connecting the cable so I can access the phone's memory as a mass storage device!

Yes, you can stop it. When you plug in the phone, down in the lower right of your screen, click and pull up the Motorola Device Manager. Do as you please with it.
