I3 Window Manager Applications Wont go to the assigned desktop[solved]

I have played with this configuration for a while now and I can't figure out why some applications go where I tell them to and some don't.
These are my current programs that wont go to the directed desktop either through hot keys or if I try to launch at boot.
nmcpp -- Tried using urxvt but then I thought that might be confussing the issue so I changed to lxterminal and same issue.
Thunar -- is an issue as well . I was using dolphin and that obeyed the syntax but I prefer Thunar.
i3 - config file -->

Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance for your response.

Changing Thunar designation to class did the trick.  -- > Thank You !!! progandy.
Still working on ncmpcpp.  No dice with this change ...
bindsym XF86_Tools exec --no-startup-id urxvt -title urxvt -e ncmpcpp
assign [class="urxvt"] "3 : Tunes"
See: http://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html#command_criteria
For your case, I believe you'd want to use -name for urxvt.
bindsym XF86_Tools exec urxvt -name ncmpcpp -e ncmpcpp
assign [instance="ncmpcpp"] "3 : Tunes"
Edit: Also, you might find this script useful. It requires libnotify and a notification daemon. I have it bound like this:
bindsym --release $mod+F1 exec --no-startup-id xprop_notify
I just press Mod4 + F1 then click on a window and it reports the instance, class, and role of the window via dunst.
The command criteria are case-sensitive, so the reason why assign [class="urxvt"] ... wasn't working for you is because by default the class for urxvt is URxvt. And urxvt -title doesn't change the class, it just changes the title of the window.

  • Window manager crashes when I run the program I'm making.

Hello, I'm making a program which uses OpenGL, Python and Cocoa with PyObjC. I've made an additional part to my program which uses the same graphical code as everything else. When using it, the window manager crashes. It happens at two places. At one place, the fps drops rapidly before the crash happens. The other place has no fps drop noticeable; it simply crashes.
I have no idea how to debug this because all I have is an error report.
Can anyone make sense of the error report? (Same on each occasion)
    Thank you.

    Reboot your computer.
When it's back up again run the installer with administrator permissions.

Thank you christ1. That worked. I did try running it with administrator, but I hadn't rebooted and it didn't work. It did work after I rebooted. I don't know why that should have mattered, but there you go. Thank you again.

  • My window manager only starts 50% of the time.

Hello all, I installed arch about a week ago and it has run perfectly.
Unfortunately about 2 days ago I have a strange issue that I can't seem to diagnose.
When I boot my arch install, (dual boot win8 with seperate hard drive), and login using slim, around 50% of the time everything will load up and my panel will show etc.
The other 50% of the time the desktop brings up just my mouse, I'm using a tiling manager and the hotkeys dont work either which makes me think that .xinit isn't being executed, yet other things in there work fine.
bspwm is my window manager, slim is my login manager, I looked in xorg.0.log a few times and couldn't find anything.  Any help would be appreciated!
(Sorry if this is in the wrong place, also ask for any files you need)

Chazza, using exec is common, but not at all necessary.  Without the exec, the parent shell process just hangs around - this is unneeded, but it does no harm.  One can even put many WMs one after the other with no exec command to run one right after the other.  Or put a few (or just one) WM in a loop with no 'exec' in order to restart the WM without restarting X (this can be seen in the dwm wiki for one example).
Toqoz, please post (or link to) 2 xorg logs: 1 for a successful run, and one for the failed attempt.
Heres my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for a successful boot, couldn't find the xorg folder in ~/.local/share/xorg.

I have seen this question asked several years ago, but have never seen a response that suggests what the issue may be.
I would really appreciate any help in resolving this problem.\
The application has been running from quite some time and this problem started just recently.
    Thank You.
    -Rick

    Hi Rick,
According to your description, the exception “System.IO.IOException: The file exists.” is thrown out when you export the report on report manager.
Generally, the exception is thrown out because there are more than 65535 files without deleting previous temporary files in our temporary directory. Based on my research, it has reported the same issue when exporting the report on report manager, and deleting all
temp files from C:\Windows\Temp could resolve the issue. I would also suggest you remove the temporary files from C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp. Please refer to the first comment at this link:
    System.IO.IOException: The file exists
    Reference:
    Path.GetTempFileName Method
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
    Best regards,

  • Windows 8 apps wont connect to the internet

I just bought a new computer last Friday.
None if the apps that came installed on the computer will connect to the internet and the app store will also not connect.I have done some basic research on trying to figure out why this is the case and it seems that it because Norton Antivirus is blocking
the ability for them to connect. Norton was the Antivirus that came installed on the computer when i bought it.
People have suggested that i just get a new antivirus software and uninstall Norton but i have a hard time believing that that is the best plan of action.
Is there anything that i can do. ive attempted to disable the Norton firewall but it changes nothing. Why would they preinstall an antivirus that doesn't work on the computers and allow for all functions

    Hi,
It can't entirely sure this problem caused by Norton. Firstly, please use APP troubleshooter to diagnose this problem. It also can resolve this problem.
    APP troubleshooter:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=268423
Secondly, Please check if you enable proxy in IE settings. If so, try to disable it for test.

  • Mission Control: Application Does Not Switch To Assigned Desktop Once Open

I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 assigned to DESKTOP 2 in Mission Control. If Photoshop is closed, and I launch it from the dock or Launchpad, Lion switches to DESKTOP 2 to launch Photoshop. This is what I want.
However, if Photoshop is already open and I click on an image file in Adobe Bridge, or Finder, Lion does not switch to DESKTOP 2. Photoshop will launch on whatever desktop I am on, in front of Finder or Adobe Bridge.
I have experienced this when I have "Automatically rearrange spaces based on most recent use" and "When switching to an application, switch to a desktop with open windows for this application" on or off. Both settings seem to have the same problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions? I used this feature extensively with Spaces, and Lion is killing my workflow unless I can get this figured out.
    Thanks!!

Wait DONT reinstall yet!!! there is a switch for this:
I bet yours is toggled the wrong way.

  • Deploy Windows Management Framework 4.0 with SCCM

    Hey guys,
I need to deploy the Windows Management Framework 4.0 using the Application Model in SCCM 2012 R2. I've got all the silent install/uninstall commands figured out, the only place I'm hung up on is the detection method. Anyone know how I could address that?
(i.e. PowerShell, not the .NET Framework)

Here's an article with an almost correct answer: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/powershell/archive/2009/06/25/detection-logic-poweshell-installation.aspx
For v3 and 4, the registry key is slightly different: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\3 instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1

  • System management patches that write to the registry write to wrong section on Win7x64 devices

I have entered a SR on this but just seeing if everyone else is running into
    this on Win7x64 devices.
As an example if i try to deploy remediation of the 'System Management -
Disable Java Update for Java JRE (Disabled)' patch on a Win7x64 device I end
up with EnableJavaUpdate value in the wrong registry area.
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy\EnableJavaUpdate
I should say this would disable 64bit java update but not 32bit java update
but if you look in the patch management debug.log you see it is looking in
the Wow6432Node(32bit) key area for detection of this patch.
For this patch to be totally correct and disable updates for 64 and 32 bit
java both of the following values would need to be wrote.
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy\EnableJavaUpdate
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java Update\PolicyEnableJavaUpdate
This disconnect between where values are wrote to the registry and what is
being looked for by patch management seems to hold true for most of the
system management patches I have tried so far on 64bit machines.

To drag up a old thread and SR (gee it has been more than 7 months). Looks
like there is finally some work on this as I got a real preliminary test
file that seems to have fixed this issue but didn't get a timeframe on an
actual release and the SR is still open.

My SR just got pushed along to Lumension. The one thing I am concerned
about is the one example I gave 'System Management - Disable Java Update for
Java JRE (Disabled)' will be the only one fixed. There is a fundamental
flaw in how most of the System Management patches interact with 64-bit
machines. Looking at where registry entries get wrote and what is detected
from the scan I would say there were not even tested on 64bit machines. I
did note my concern in the SR.

  • [SOLVED]Useless after set xfce4's Window Manager Tweaks

My xfwm4's theme is 'B5',when I opened a new window, the window always will pop-ups at the left top of the screen and I just want it to pop-up at the center of the screen.
Then I set the Window Manager Tweaks program, I chose the 'Placement' tag and click on whether 'At the center of the screen' or 'Under the mouse pointer' is useless.
    How to fix the set?

  • System hangs after leaving any window manager rebuild xorg?

Just did a full system upgrade and everything is working fine except when I leave ANY window manager like fluxbox or gnome, the systems hangs and will not drop back to console, the screen just goes black with a white horizontal line about the size of a cursor at the top of the screen. I also start my window managers from the console with startx. Anyone else had this problem? And now X is just freezing at random, very random and not all that often. Should i just rebuild Xorg?

This is weird. It's like it shuts down different functions one by one like the scroll, mouse, keyboard and other stuff that is related to gnome. It doesn't freeze, it just shuts down some functions that make it impossible to use desktop environment and now I've tried to turn off Compiz, Emerald and using the Clearlook theme but still it's the same thing.

Yes, I'm using Nvidia but its not the same error. My computer doesn't freeze.

    Clint:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
In terms of the Firefox issue. Boot the computer and log in. Then go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and see if Firefox is listed there. If it is, then select it and click the minus sign at then bottom left. The reboot the computer and try to launch Firefox.
A couple of other things to check. Open a Finder Window (Commnand + N when in Finder) and look in the sidebar. Do you see a white disk-like icon named Firefox? If you do, click on it, drag the Firefox icon into the Applications folder, then eject the white disk icon.
If neither of the above work, hold down Command + Option + esc. Do you see Firefox in the list of items to Force quit? If you do, select it and Force quit.
Please let me know if any of these work.
In terms of Dashboard, do you have the install disk for the OS you have installed?

  • Premiere Pro, Creative Cloud & Adobe Application Manager all wont open.

One day it was fine, the next it's not. My Premiere Pro, Creative Cloud & Adobe Application Manager all wont open.
No error messages, it just doesn't open. I can't get through to talk to staff (because why should you be able to right? You only pay for the service..)
Could someone please shed some light on my situation?
My Lightroom and Photoshop are running fine as normal. I wish I could provide more information but it's really that simple - none of it will open.
    Thank you!

At this point, I think I'd just download & run the Adobe CC Cleaner app, and use it to uninstall & clean up your PrPro & the Creative Cloud desktop app itself ... then download a fresh copy of the CC desktop app, install & sign into your account, then download & reinstall PrPro ...
