ICAL + MobileMe = Confusion

Having upgraded to the new version of MobileMe, I have eventually managed to sync my iCAL, MobileMe and iPhone diaries (thanks to those who have already posted communications on how to do this). However, I have a couple of questions in relation to this:
1. If all three diaries are now syncing wirelessly, what happens if I lose my iPhone and have to remotely wipe the data on it - does this mean that all my diary entries on MobileMe will also be wiped?
2. I now don't seem to be able to export my iCAL diary to archive to back it up - is this because i am no longer using 'on my mac' and now using 'me.com'? Is there a way to save the me.com calendar to the hard drive for safety and back-up?
Thanks

Dr Law,
...does this mean that all my diary entries on MobileMe will also be wiped?
No, all your data will remain in the cloud.
...Is there a way to save the me.com calendar to the hard drive for safety and back-up?

  • ICal / MobileMe To Dos & iPhone syncing over mobile networks: Solution!!!

    I have been after a solution to use the to do list in iCal on my Mac @ home and the MobileMe Calendar web page while at work & away from home AND have it sync OTA with my iPhone. There hasn't been a solution that I have found for this until now! I have tried Things and OmniFocus, but in my opionion they are both too bloated for my needs. I want a simple todo list with due dates, notes, priorities and URLs, that I can use on desktops as well as mobile. The iCal / MobileMe to do list is perfect for this, but until now there hasn't been a way to keep the same todo list on my iPhone and keep it in sync everywhere.
    I now have a solution. Appigo recently launched a beta of their iCal Sync app for OSX. I downloaded & installed this to my Mac at home, and downloaded their iPhone Todo app. Great syncing between iCal and iPhone over my home Wifi network. Then, I thought, what is to stop me using this over the internet when I'm not at home? So I setup a domain with no-ip.org, which allows you to point a domain name at your home DSL router IP address and have it forward traffic to your home computer. Using a DNS solution in this way means you can dynamically update the domain name to change when your router public IP address changes (unless you have a static IP assigned with your ISP). So, anyway, I set this up to point at my router's public IP address, then configured my home router to forward a specific TCP port to my Mac. So when traffic arrives at the router from the internet destined for this specific port, the router forwards it to the Mac. I configured the Appigo iCal sync app to listen on a static port (the same one I configured on the router) and ensured both my Mac and router firewalls were set to permit this traffic.
    So now, with MobileMe set to sync automatically, I can add/edit/delete a todo on my iPhone when I'm away from my home wifi network and it instantly syncs with iCal on my Mac at home, then that gets propogated almost instantly to MobileMe. Also it means a change to the todo list on my Mac or on the MobileMe Calendar web page will also almost instantly get propgated to my iPhone (next timne the Todo app syncs).
    Brilliant! The perfect solution for me, and only costing the price of the Appigo todo iPhone app!
    If anyone would like more detail on how this was all done, let me know and I can go into more detail.
    Just need to find something similar for note syncing now, and I'll be sorted.

    Thanks for the excellent information on Appigo ToDo and Sync. This is great way to fulfill the unexplainable absence of this feature from Apple's own application suite (MobileMe, iCal, To Do items).
    I downloaded Sync and the iPhone app. Configuration was a snap. I'm still working from a trial membership of MobileMe...with this feature working I'm just about ready to pony up and get a full membership.

  • New iCal / MobileMe system: how to synchronize ? How to group calendars ? H

    Hi there,
    Apple decides to change iCal/MobileMe system. Thanks for changing something that worked fine. Now it doens't.
    I used to have my local calendar that synchronized with MobileMe, with groups of calendar (e.g. professional & personal). I used to publish professional calendars. Worked fine.
    Now the 'MobileMe calendars' appear on iCal. I have problems
    1/ I cannot create groups of calendars on MobileMe. How to do that ? And how next to publish one group ?
    2/ I have local calendar still here. But it does not synchronize no more with MobileMe (in both ways). How to ?
    3/ I want to go back with the ancien system. How to get back ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,

    Hi Roger,
    Thank you for your answers and your contribution.
    The new MobileMe calendar does not support Groups.
    You mean that, now that I decided to pay to synchronize, I have less services ? Quite original !!
    To transfer a local calendar to MobileMe: select it; from the File menu choose Export...>Export... - an .ics file will be saved in the specified location.
    I have several calendars (around 15) I regularely save. Before, I used to save the whole database simply in one click.
    If I undersatand well, I will have to save manually all calendars one by one ?
    I really do not undersatand these "improvements"...

  • Sync issues with iCal/MobileMe/Google

    Seems like I've come across something rather sticky....
    History
    I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone 3G. For the first few months of having the phone, syncing worked like a charm... no complaints. I then decided that I needed to get my Appointments etc up online for my colleagues to view as I travel out of the office so went into my Google account and activated the calendar feature, adding GoogleMail as a new calendar in iCal. No problems so far.
    Things seemed to work fine for a little while. A few weeks later (or long enough that I didn't see any correlation), my iPhone sync reverted back to an earlier state of my iCal calendars, including deleting a couple of new calendars I'd added in the meantime. Nothing was affected on my laptop btw. Google had gone completely berko as well. So basically no new additions in iCal were turning up on my phone.
    I then thought, hey I'll try out MobileMe and see if that solves things. Answer = nope. After setting up the account on the iPhone, this old "ghost" calendar decided that it would also sync to MobileMe as well as the iPhone. When I added new things online or on the iPhone, they would both update each other, but never iCal on the laptop.
    So I'm sitting here today pretty much over it, trawling the net for answers. I come across a post that says to simply delete the following folder: user/library/calendar - btw i did backup before i did this!
    I do this, empty trash, then reopen iCal. Blank Canvas!
    And then, after about 20 secs, the old "ghost" calendars pop up out of nowhere, with everything intact from about 2 months ago. I turn off airport, disconnect ethernet and repeat the process. Same thing happens... so somewhere on my laptop is a buried file that is finding it's way into iCal, and also overwriting all sync data just for iCal. Address Book and Mail seem to be doing just fine with MobileMe.
    The reason I guess why I think it's Google interfering (wouldn't be the first time) is that it's the odd one out when the "ghost" returns... I would've thought that deleting the Calendars folder would wipe everything out, but I'm sure when I went through the original GoogleMail thingy, it would've buried something somewhere at the time.
    So any help would be greatly appreciated. It really is driving me absolutely batty!!
    Cheers

    And it looks like I've just answered my own question!!
    Just found this post online, followed all the steps, rebooted, sign out then signed back in to MobileMe, re-registered the laptop and Bob's-your-uncle.
    So if anyone needs help, just follow these easy steps....
    The report shows that you have some data corruption. You should be able to resolve this by resetting Sync Services:
    * Open iSync (in /Applications)
    * Go to preferences
    * Click Reset Sync History
    * Try syncing again
    If that fails to resolve the issue, try replacing the database:
    * If you haven't done so lately, make a backup of your iCal calendars (iCal File menu > Back up iCal)
    * Quit out of all open programs
    * Make sure that nothing is syncing (Spanning Sync, .Mac, iSync)
    * Move these two folders to the trash:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices (~ refers to your home directory)
    ~Library/Application Support/iSync/SyncLocalCopy (~ refers to your home directory)
    * Restart
    * Open iCal and give it a few minutes to write out the new database
    Please let us know if that doesn't address the problem or you have other questions.
    That didn't work in my case, so I ran another report (contained within the Spanning Sync Application) and sent it to them a second time. What they suggested next fixed the problem for me.
    I'm still seeing the same errors in the new report. Lets try clearing your calendar cache:
    * Quit out of iCal if it's open
    * Delete this file:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
    (~ refers to your home directory.)
    * Delete the contents of this folder:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Sync Changes/
    (~ refers to your home directory.)
    * Open iCal
    * Wait at least five minutes until after it finishes "Upgrading Calendars"
    * Sync!

  • 10.6.5 - iCal - MobileMe - "Server not recognize"

    Since upgrading to 10.6.5 iCal cannot log into MobileMe. The error says the server did not recognize my account. MobileMe in Mail is fine, MobileMe is fine when logging in/out from System Prefs, I did the whole resync thing, (which went fine), and web login to MM calendar via Safari is fine.
    Any thoughts?

    All clear - held my breath - deleted the account/calendar and re-added it. I'm not sure what the root cause is/was, but the MM calendar update has been quite an adventure in general independent of 10.6.5.

  • ICal MobileMe upgrade : disappeared local calendars.

    Hi all,
    I "upgraded" my MobileMe iCal as I was asked to. Now all "on my mac" calendars are gone.
    Some were not synced with MobileMe, so they just gone forever...
    Like the ones I subscribed to.
    Looks like the new MobileMe iCal just wiped out everything that's not MobileMe. Not cool.
    I don't have the "over 30 days events gone" issue like others, though.
    Does it mean that if one day I quit MobileMe (I'm not planning to, but hypothetically speaking), all my calendars will be gone ?
    Thx

    When Apple made the announcement to upgrade to OS 10.6 otherwise calendars would not sync, I did it. I've upgraded all of my computers to Snow Leopard and I am experiencing a total disconnect in service since that day. None of my calendars will sync properly. I've tried resending invitations, creating a new calendar to share and all to no avail. And on top of that, every time I've sent invitations, the app crashes!!
    Please don't tell me that I have to upgrade to Lion 2 months after I was told to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I rather go back to microsoft entourage.
    I'm really mad about this. I just said microsoft.

  • ICal - MobileMe - Exchange

    Good morning all,
    until a few weeks ago, all was perfect in this world. Received invites in Mail (ics attachements), dropped them in iCal, which would sync to my iPhone through MobileMe.
    Then "progress" came our way in the form of Exchange 2007. Had to tweak a few things (adding an exchange account into iCal for one). Now, invites show automatically in iCal, but under a separate set of calendars (I have my own drop down calendars, and then this new Exchange list of drop down calendar).
    The thing is, those invites, not being in "my" local calendars, don't sync to my iPhone through MobileMe. How do I get this to work? Do I make sense ?
    Thanks!

    Hi JWilson@ch,
    So I thought I was the only person doing that crazy workflow to get everything synced. I do it exactly the same way.
    I stupidly upgraded to the new MobileMe last year when first invited, and spent the next few days working out how to get it all back and working. I have been happily syncing everything the old way since then.
    My major concern now is that I just received an email from MobileMe today saying I have to upgrade now as they have stopped syncing the old calendar! I haven't checked this yet (I will in a sec), but if I have to upgrade, that means I lose everything that has worked so well since MobileMe started.
    My crappy work Blackberry is useless for mirroring my Outlook calendar, so syncing my work onto the much more user friendly iPhone had been a saviour. Now I have all of my work and personal appointments in the same place, and I never miss anything.
    What to do now? Is there another way to get my PC calendar onto my iPhone, apart from the Exchange Activesync option which my office also doesn't support.
    I'll hold out as long as I can...

  • Ical + mobileme seems to prevent entourage sync

    since i have upgraded to mobileme, i notice that my ical has all but stopped syncing with entourage. i don't know what the matter is but it won't sync with entourage anymore or if it does it's really slow (can take hours for a change or a new entry to make it across). that seems to be since i 'upgraded'' to mobileme. has anyone had the same problem?
    i also have an iphone which syncs to the exchange server which entourage is connected to.

    Having the same problem - iPhone, MobileMe and iCal all OK - Entourage, nada.

  • ICal, MobileMe, Outlook sync

    Hey all, thanks in advance for your help. I use an iMac, MacBook Pro, and iPhone for personal use. I also use a Dell PC at work and my agency requires that my appointments be posted in the Outlook calendar which utilizes Microsoft Exchange server, and the OS on my Dell at work is MS XP Pro.
    I currently use iCal on my iPhone during appointments to schedule next sessions with clients. Those appointments then get synced with mobileme to my laptop and to my iMac at home. Fine. BUT, I also want (and am required by my work) to have those same appointments on my Outlook calendar on the Dell desktop.
    When I go to the MobileMe control panel for Windows app on my Dell desktop Control Panel, it says that "Syncing of MS Outlook contacts and calendars is not possible when Outlook is configured to use MS Exchange Server" - which ours is. So it appears I cannot use MobileMe to sync my calendar.
    I also thought, well, I can hard-wire sync my phone to my desktop at work, but when I do that, the sync process won't take the iCal data and draw it from the phone to be put in Outlook calendar, it wants to replace the information on my iPhone with the Outlook calendar data which I erased - so there is nothing on my Outlook calendar at this point. My thought was once I was able to do the first transfer of data from iCal on my iPhone to the MS Outlook calendar, then syncing would happen as needed from that point forward. I don't want to allow it to transfer from Outlook TO my iPhone the first time though because it will erase everything on my iPhone iCal, I think.
    I'm so frustrated. Does anyone know how I can successfully use my iPhone, MacBook, iMac, and me.com on the web - to add appointments to my iCal calendars, and then make sure that data gets transferred to my Outlook calendar on my work desktop? I don't need to use my desktop outlook calendar to enter appointments, just need to have them appear there.
    HELP!! and thanks.

    No one has any answers?

  • ICal & MobileMe not syncing

    iCal on my Mac no longer syncs with MobileMe even though it is set to synchronise in the preferences pane. How can I fix this?

    Greetings Lou,
    You should have received an email in your MobileMe inbox regarding a change in MobileMe calendar (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4037). Calendars no longer sync, they use a different server based system now called CalDAV.  This gets rid of the need for syncing as the calendars "live" within MobileMe now.
    Turn off Calendar syncing in the MobileMe preference pane in system preferences.
    Follow this article to setup your iCal for the new system: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4330
    Cheers.

  • Stuck in iCal/MobileMe Upgrade Loop

    When I launch iCal a dialogue box pops up and I am asked if I want to
    "upgrade to the new MobileMe Calendar." I am assured that if I click
    the "Upgrade..." button I will "learn more about the new MobileMe
    Calendar" and be able to upgrade.
    "Sure, why not?"
    Clicking "Upgrade..." simply takes me to my calendar at me.com. There
    is no information on an upgrade, and nothing seems different.
    Each time I launch iCal on any of five Macs currently in use the same cycle
    repeats.
    TIA!

    I upgraded to iCal Beta and have regretted it ever since.
    First of all I couldn't upgrade despite getting the invite because the upgrade cycle didn't work. Then when I finally upgraded cutting and pasting info into iCal put everything in the wrong order with no simple way of putting it right, so addresses and phone numbers all got mixed up. Then the leave feedback button was nowhere to be seen to report this problem so I decided to leave the Beta. Now I cannot get iCal on iPhone to sync any other way but manually despite no end of resetting sync data, backing up and or erasing calendars.

  • IPod- MobileMe- iCal works; iCal- MobileMe- iPod broken!

    I am using MacOsX10.6.5 and iOS4.2(iPodTouch) and while events created on my iPod are almost instantly seen in my laptop's iCal app, any events created on a calendar in iCal on my laptop is never updated to MobileMe and therefor never appears on my iPod. I believe there is a bug in the syncing process in the one direction that is most important to me. This probably can't be fixed but thought I would let others know.

    Hi,
    In iCal on the left, is the calendar you are adding events to under the section 'MobileMe', or 'On My Mac'?
    Only calendars under MobileMe will sync with MobileMe.
    Best wishes
    John M

  • ICal - MobileMe - Duplicates, Triplicates, etc. - gone crazy?

    Have been using MobileMe for over a year now, "almost" no problem, but since 2-3 weeks out of control: I use it to sync calendar and address book across MacBook Pro, iPad and iPhone 4 (sync only over MobileMe, not over iTunes). Since 2-3 weeks the calendar entries multiply dozen of times with no reason. E.g. enter one meeting in the iPhone, then find it dozen of times in MacBook and iPad. Also the other ways round.
    Have reset all sync and deleted all calendars, no impact. Bug in MobileMe or am I missing a hidden setting somewhere? Please help.

    Greetings,
    How many computers are you syncing?
    If you are running the latest version of the Mac OS on all the computers and the latest version of the iOS on your iPhone you might want to consider using the new MobileMe calendar. The issue you describe sounds like a sync database issue. The new MobileMe calendar does not use syncing anymore so this might be a cleaner solution to the issue.

  • Syncing iCal: MobileMe vs direct sync?

    Only some of my schedule gets synced. Also invites that I've accepted only sometimes get synced to iPhone. I've got it set to sync via MobileMe and when connected. Tried using one or the other but nothing seems to work.
    Can I delete the iPhone schedule and start over? Or is there a better way?
    It's becoming frustrating as I can no longer trust my calendar...
