IE 10 issue in RoboHelp 10
Info on Adobe site says the IE10 patch for RoboHelp 10 enables webhelp to work in IE10.
If I apply the patch, does webhelp work ONLY in IE10 or does it work in both IE9 and IE10?
Thanks for your help,
John
As documented on Peter Grainge's snippets, the RH10 patch does NOT work if you content is on a Win 2008 server. That was the case for me.
If anyone else is unfortunate enough to run into this situation, there is a work around -- albeit ugly.
In the index.htm file, do this for the head tag:
<head>
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="whstart.ico">
<title>Insert Your Title Here </title>
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE8" >
<meta name="generator" content="Adobe RoboHelp 10" />
<meta name="description" content="WebHelp 5.50" />
<!-- comment out or delete the following line generated by RoboHelp
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
-->
</head>
Note that this is a bad solution if some of your users are stuck on a lower version of IE.
It also means you need to make yourself a giant note to remember to manually edit the index.htm file.

I currently have Robohelp 8 installed on the same system and I have not uninstalled it yet. Tried running this setup in parallel so as to make sure I had a back-up app to continue working in case this didn't work out. The installation PDF for RH9 doesn't state anywhere that an older instance of the application needs to be uninstalled, nor does the setup prompt in any way that another version exists on the system.
I tried some of the troubleshooting tips suggested on the Support site such as trying to uninstall Flash, repair the MSI file using msiexec /unreg and msiexec /regserver , selecting a different path for the setup... none of these solutions seem to work.
Also tried using a local administrative user login but that also resulted in the same error log.
Any solution to this would be high appreciated.
Regards,
Tanmay GadkariThanks for the suggestion Preran...
It appears that there was an issue with the initial installer copied from the remote server. When I executed the setup directly from the US server, it worked fine.. took ages.. but worked ok.
I have RH8 and RH9 both installed right now and both seem to be working fine. Don't think an uninstall of the previous version is required. When you open a RH8 xpj file with version 9, it'll ask you to take a backup of the project and upgrade the xpj. Works fine from thereon.
Issue resolved for now

DOM Based Cross-Site Scripting issue in RoboHelp 10
We're using a WebHelp system originally deplyed using RoboHelp 9.0.2.271, and a recent security scan revealed the DOM based cross-site scripting issue.
I recently upgraded to RoboHelp 10, migrated my help system to this version, and redeployed the system, but our security scan is still detecting the cross-scripting vulnerability in WebHelp. Wasn't this issue resolved in RoboHelp 10?
ThanksHi,
I’m not a security expert, but this script reads the URL of the current topic and redirects to the current topic with a bookmark. This is needed for when the same topic is used in multiple locations in the TOC.
I’ll ask around about this security issue.

Known backwards compatibility issues between Robohelp 9 and Robohelp 8?
Hi Group,
In addition to avoiding the tasks in the Review menu, does anyone know of any other backwards compatibility issues encountered while opening and using files generated in RoboHelp 9 from within Robohelp 8? Thanks, gailWelcome to the forum.
Simply the fact that RoboHelp 8 will not open a project that has been run in RoboHelp 9. Sure you might well open a project by deleting the CPD and perhaps the XPJ and using the HHP, however I would not recommend that except in an emergency.
What I am not clear on is how you link that to "avoiding the tasks in the Review menu." What has that got to do with the question?

Issues in RoboHELP 5 project imported in new RoboHELP 9
I've imported a project from RoboHELP 5 to RoboHELP 9 and i need to generate a Microsoft HTML Help (chm) file but I'm having some trouble. The system I'm using is Windows 7 64 bit.
1) I've defined a stylesheet css file linked to all my topics. Inside the html editor all topis are shown correctly. Also in preview window they are right ... but in the generated help some pages (not all!) lose the link to css file. To correct this issue I need to open in editor and focse saving for any involved page, the problem is that I've hundred of pages in the project!
2) This is the most frustrating issue. When the help is opened directly from the chm file I've no problems, but if the help is opened by our software for the contextual help, I get this error:
Translating from Italian: the error is "Property or method not supported by the object"
Does anyone has a solution for these issues?
Thank in advance.
VanioHi Vanio,
This problem is usually caused by hhctrl.ocx file which is in the system 32 folder. Try registering the file by typing the following command in Start > 'Run'
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx

Issues with RoboHelp HTML Help and IE7
I attempted to create a basic (one-topic) HTML Help file
using RoboHelp X5 (5.0.2 update), with the topic tied to the TOC,
index, and search navigation tools. I attempted to open the CHM on
a PC running Windows XP / IE7, but it displayed the "page cannot be
displayed" error.
I tried to open the CHM file on another PC running Windows
2000 / IE6, and it worked like a charm.
Apparently, there is something about IE7 (or Windows XP, but
I doubt it) that breaks RoboHelp HTML Help files. Does anyone have
any information about this issue? Thanks!

The problem contrary to your belief originated under Windows

Last week I changed from a laptop to a pc and my robohelp files went from my C drive to a network drive. Now any hyperlinks that I have on my projects are not working. I get this error. When I try to select the destination, I normally see the preview but cannot. Any suggestions?
Thank you!A search of these forums will show that RoboHelp projects must be on your local drive, unless using source control.
Move the project back to you local drive and all should be well.
Also make sure the laptop is patched to 8.0.2. The reason is covered in Opening Projects on my site.

Hi there,
We are having an issue with RoboHelp 10 and SVN (Subversion 1.7.5).
Say, for example, I add three new topics to an online help project, close the project and commit the changes. My colleague performs an SVN update - she can see that the new files are brought down from the server. The new files are then visible in the physical RoboHelp project folder - so SVN has done its job. However, when she opens the online help project on her machine, the three new files are appearing with the red 'X' in the table of contents - suggesting RoboHelp cannot find the files (as per the image below). The files are also not displayed in the project manager pod. However, if we perform a manual import in the project manager, the files are added to the project manager and no longer displayed with the red 'X' in the table of contents.
This has only happened since we upgraded to RH 10 from RH 9. Could it be that there is some setting that we need to configure?Hi there,
Just to follow up - our tools department is convinced that this must be a problem with RH rather than SVN as SVN seems to be doing what it should. So we are really quite lost! Do you know if it's possible to reinstall RoboHelp 9? Could that be a solution?
The Import/Restore option doesn't work in the case where a team member creates a new file inside a new directory in the project manager. In this case, RoboHelp doesn't seem to be able to pick up the new directory after the SVN commit and update - and so it can't find the file at all. Restore and import do work, however, where a new file is added at root level or in an existing folder. -
ADA Fixes for Robohelp: Frames & CSS Issues
Fellow Robohelpers:
I am attempting to resolve a set of major issues within Robohelp 8
a) Frames are not properly named in Robohelp 8. Is anyone aware with which files to change (post generation or pre-generation of outputs) to rename Frames so the visually impaired user is clearly informed which frame they are on
b)When you disable CSS, the navigational elements (frames) become a jumble. They do not function correctly (TOC, Index, Search) since Robohelp is heavily CSS dependent and hides objects (text fields, the various left hand navigational elments) behind CSS.
Any reccomendations how to resolve these, or insights as to how to make Adobe aware of this! I have been reaching out to them about this for quite some time! I am hoping capturing a workaround for at least a) will make the tool one step closer to ADA compliance (screen reader compliance)
Thanks
YaseenHi,
I guess your output is WebHelp. First, try to create 'Section 508 compliant' output or pure HTML output. This may solve quite a bit of your problems.
If you don't want that output, this is what I think:
a) RH nests a lot of frames, but start looking at the launch file, the csh.htm file, whskinfrmset01.htm and whskin_frmset010.htm. Note that if you change the names of frames, this may cause some scripts to stop functioning...
b) As for the CSS issues, the only way to make that work is to manually sort out all problems and amend the javascripts.

RoboHelp 9/Acrobat X Pro Integration with Outlook 2010
Is anyone aware of any issues with RoboHelp 9 and/or Acrobat X Pro integrating with Outlook 2010? When I create a PDF for review using RoboHelp and then try to send it for shared review, I keep getting an error message when I try to add people to the To and CC lists in the Send for Shared Review dialog. Clicking either button brings up my Address Book from Outlook, and I can select people without any problems, but whenever I click OK, I get a Check Names dialog book that says:
Microsoft Outlook does not recognize"/O=Company Name", Select the address to use:
(No Suggestions)
At this point, all I can do is go back to the Address Book and try to add people again, but this leads to the same error.In Outlook, go to File/Options/Add-Ins, and select Manage Com Add-ins, and click Go...
Then make sure the PDFMaker Office COM Addin is checked, select OK, restart, and it should be available. -
Office 2007 and RoboHelp HTML 8
We've been asked to upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2007. I've checked the forums but all of the discussions were dealing with older versions of RH. Has anyone had issues using Robohelp HTML 8 with Office 2007?
If you never have to use RH for Word or import or export to Word files then this is a non-issue. Even if you have to any of these things RH8 has been tested using Office 2007. It might be best if you outline a few specific instances whereby you need to integrate RH8 with Office 2007, download the trial and have a play. It is fair to say that the takeup of Office 2007 is less than Office 2003 and that not all RH users use the interface with Word.

We're using RoboHelp 8 to create html help files. These files reside on our server. Context-sensitive help is displayed by calling RH_ShowHelp().
In IE and FF, calling "RH_ShowHelp(0,'/help/help.htm>NoNavPane', HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 102)" opens a new window displaying the appropriate context-sensitive help page.
In Chrome, the same RH_SHowHelp call opens a new window with no content - url bar has "about:blank".
Is there a workaround for this issue in RoboHelp 8? If not, is the problem corrected in later versions of RoboHelp?
Thanks in advance,
Trevor.The basic issue is Chrome is falling into a block of code designated for IE4.
Details:
function SwitchURL in whcsh_home.htm includes this block:
if(gbNav4)
if (gbIsFF) {
goNewWnd=window.open(sURL,sNewName,strOpt);
goNewWnd.focus();
setTimeout("goNewWnd.focus();",1)
}else{
if (gbNav6)
gsURL = sURL;
goNewWnd=window.open("about:blank",sNewName,strOpt);
setTimeout("postWindowNSOpen();",100);
else
window.open("about:blank",sNewName,strOpt);
var oNewWnd=window.open(sURL,sNewName);
window.close();
oNewWnd.focus();
else
if(gbIE5)
window.open("about:blank",sNewName,strOpt);
goNewWnd=window.open(sURL,sNewName);
else
gsURL = sURL; // IE4 had hard time to handle bookmark.
goNewWnd=window.open("about:blank",sNewName,strOpt);
setTimeout("postWindowOpen();",100);
Based on the values of the various flags, in Chrome, program exection falls into the last section, which I've bolded.
postWindowOpen is called, which looks like this:
function postWindowOpen()
if(goNewWnd)
if (gsURL&&!gbIE5&&gbIE4)
goNewWnd.document.location.href=gsURL;
goNewWnd.focus();
Based on the settings of these flags, the line which sets the href is not executed and therefore the context-sensitve help window remains blank.
The fix I made was to add a case to the code block I noted above in the SwitchURL function to handle Chrome:
}else if(gbChrome){
gsURL = sURL;
goNewWnd=window.open("about:blank",sNewName,strOpt);
setTimeout("postWindowChromeOpen();",100);
and to create a Chrome specific function for setting the href of the CSH window:
function postWindowChromeOpen(){
if(goNewWnd){
if(gsURL){
goNewWnd.document.location.href=gsURL;
goNewWnd.focus(); -

Yes, I'm fully aware that WebHelp is an output option
available from RoboHelp for Word. The point is, it's a bit like
using a Cooper Mini to haul concrete to a construction site. In
other words, you can do it, sure. But if you do, you are subject to
limitations. You are creating HTML from a product designed to work
with Word. And Word was created for printed output. Anything else
is a hack and not within the guidelines of its original intent.
Like building a room onto a mobile home. So my reference to
RoboHelp HTML was intended to coax you into examining a more
suitable tool for the job that will likely provide a better result.
I suppose I read your post with a bit of tongue in cheek
humor. Especially the bit about Adobe putting out a product that
just doesn't work. We have to face realities. And one of those
realities is that software (any software) has quirks.
As you seem to be having issues making RoboHelp for Word
behave, I might assume (perhaps mistakenly) that the previous
person was using RoboHelp HTML.
Good luck in getting it all sorted... Rick -
Condition tags set up in FrameMaker don't display correctly in RoboHelp for TCS 3.5
Hi everyone,
I am using Technical Communication Suite 3.5 (which is FrameMaker 10 and RoboHelp 9). From past discussions I understand that there are two methodologies for working with conditional text.
Conditionalize the text in FrameMaker and then control what does and doesn't show using build expressions in RoboHelp. In this case the Apply FrameMaker Conditional Text Build Expression is not selected in RoboHelp and Show All is selected in FrameMaker.
Conditionalize the text in FrameMaker and then control what does and doesn't show in RoboHelp by using build expressions in FrameMaker itself. In this case the Apply FrameMaker Conditional Text Build Expression is selected in RoboHelp and a build expression is applied in FrameMaker and only what is showing in FrameMaker is brought into RoboHelp.
If I am incorrect in how this should work in theory, please let me know!
What I really want to do is the first option. I want to bring all of the text (with conditions) into RoboHelp and then create Single Source Layouts with different conditions defined.
What I'm actually seeing is this:
If Apply FrameMaker Conditional Text Build Expression is not selected in RoboHelp, some topics have conditions that are applied correctly. But, in other topics, text that is not conditionalized in FrameMaker has conditions applied.
Miscellaneous (maybe relevant? stuff):
I am linking the project, not importing.
I read that the condition names in FrameMaker cannot have a dash in them, so I edited the names in FrameMaker and removed the dash.
Thanks,
LindaHi All,
Although I have replied Jen separately but would like to elaborate the issue with source FM which causes such kind of issue in RoboHelp.
The issue is with the source FM document as elaborate below:-
When we apply a Conditional text to any FM list by selecting the whole line as shown in image-1 then the conditions spill over in the generated topic in RoboHelp,
the best practice will be to select the text of the list item only and apply condition as shown in the second image "HowToApplyConditiontoList".
This will not let the condition spill over in the generated topic in RoboHelp and your conditions will appear properly in RoboHelp
Hope this will help

Hello there, hoping to get some advice on a couple issues
with RoboHelp.
We just started deploying FlashHelp here, and have run into a
couple of snags. I am running RoboHelp version 6, Flash player
version 9, and have the Flash authoring software (if needed), but
that’s version MX 2004. We’re running IE 6 and Windows
XP Pro.
Question 1
In a FlashHelp (generated) project, when on the Index tab, if
I use the search box to search for an index word, the following
error displays: "A script in this movie is causing Adobe Flash
Player 9 to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may
become unresponsive. Do you wish to abort the script?" If I tell it
NOT to abort the script, the computer still runs slowly. If I tell
it to go ahead and abort the script, Internet Explorer freezes up.
I asked our in-house web team and Flash development team to
look at the index issue, and they discovered something strange. The
index only breaks if the index word entered starts with the letter
A. Has that ever happened to anyone else? We’ve tried
multiple help projects on multiple boxes (computers), and results
have been very inconsistent. Sometimes it breaks, sometimes not,
but ONLY when the index entry starts with an A.
Is there something that I can change in the code anywhere to
prevent that from happening in the first place? Alternately, is
there a way to change the skin to completely remove that input
field from the index? It's not necessary to our process to have it
there, so long as the index entries are there with the scroll bar.
Note: We’re just using the Flash Default skin –
no modifications.
Question 2
One of my latest help projects is context-sensitive. When
called from within the application (F1) the proper topic displays.
However, the TOC always shows the default book - it does not expand
to match to where the user really is within the help.
Even stranger (to me), the TOC works just fine for the
first-level and second-level books and pages. However, anything
third level or deeper, the TOC behaves as described above -
defaulting to the welcome page book.
All the books are books with links (to topics), if that
matters. Also, I tried generating the project as WebHelp, and had
the same results - the TOC still would not automatically populate
when called as CSH from within the application.
In all other respects, things seem to be functioning just
fine.
I downloaded the trial version of RoboHelp 7, and had the
same issues.
Thanks so much!I can recreate the problem but I haven't seen it reported
before. WebHelp has an option that would let you avoid the input
box in the Index but not FlashHelp.
There is information in Snippet 1 on my site about TOC
synchronisation but I don't know if it will help with FlashHelp.
Please report this bug via the Adobe site.
