Imac froze then wont reboot.

My imac froze whilst my iphone was syncing.
It wont boot up past the apple and spinning circle logo.
I have left this for 15 mins and it still wont reboot.
I managed to get the install disc in and use the disk utility.
It gave me the following messages.
Incorrect number of thread records.
Invalid leaf record count
(it should be 2001211 instead of 2001210)
Invalid volume free block count
(it should be 29872332 instead of 29872331)
It is now repairing the volume.
How long should this take and is there anything else I need to do so the mac will boot up ?

If it was me, before doing a full re-install, I would use a cloning utility (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) to duplicate the internal drive to the external drive. Then try booting from the external drive by setting it as the startup volume in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. This is a test to make sure it works and everything (especially your personal data) is there, like your internal drive.
If it runs smoothly (may feel a bit slower if that external is a USB drive) and those issues do not recur, the system may be fine. You can then use Disk Utility Erase tab to erase (reformat) the internal drive (be sure to select the internal DRIVE and not the volume indented below the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar). Then clone the external drive back it the internal drive. The reformat will get rid of the disk directory corruption error, so hopefully your previous system will work fine.
If the error caused problems with the system files (similar problems recur when booted from the external clone), you can do a full Mac OS X re-install on a freshly erased internal drive, then migrate your personal data from the clone on the external drive. In either case, the first step is to duplicate your internal drive to the external drive. The easiest way is to use one of those cloning utilities.
It is possible that there is a hardware problem with the drive. In most cases, the reformat will get rid of the problem, if it just corruption to the disk directory. You should monitor closely for a few weeks, because if the hard drive is starting to fail, a similar problem might happen again.

  • Imac froze now wont turn on

My Imac started flickering then froze so I turned off, then when turning back on it froze at a white screen before letting me select users.  I tried shutting off again and unplugging all USB cables and unplugged the power, plugged power back in waited and tried turning on.  Now the computer won't even turn on.

It sounds like you need to make a trip to the genius bar to have them take a look at your computer

  • Imac sleeps then wont let me login since Mountain Lion upgrade.

Upgraded my I7 2010 Imac to Mountain lion but now when waking up the computer from sleep, when I enter the password I just get the spinning ball.
In the end I have to hold the power button to shut it down then re power back up and log in.
Getting very annoying now and looking through google noiced other people with a simialr problem.
Obviously missed in all the Beta versions.
Does anyone have a work around for it.
I have tried Repairing the disk, Reseting PRAM and the SMC. I have also tried removing my password but it still hapens.

Then you bought your iMac used and even though it had Mt Lion installed on when You Got It, it shouldn't have. The seller should of reinstalled the original shipping version of OS X on it before it was sent/given to you.
You will need to reinstall the original version of OS X that came on that Mac when it was new. That could of been Lion, Snow Leopard or Leopard.
What you should do is this.
    1) First try bootiing the system from the Online Internet Recovery system. Hold down the Command + Option + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen. If your Mac come with OS X Lion when it was new you will be able to reinstall that version.
    2) Even IF your Mac can boot from the Online Internet Recovery system but you get an Error when trying to reinstall OS X then your iMac came woth one of the older OS X version and you will need the Original system reinstall discs that came with every Mac before Lion came out. If the seller did not supply those original discs you can order a Replacement set from Apple by calling Apple and have your iMac serial number. There is a small fee involved to get the replacement set of discs.

    Hi There,
My 17" intel iMac screen froze then has gone completely blank..
I've done a SMC reset to no avail.

If it won't startup in Safe Mode, then try Startup Manager or the Apple Hardware Test from your original Install Disc.

  • Imac intel core duo (2008) crashed and wont reboot after Mountain Lion upgrade

    Hi can anyone help?
Hi, my imac was loaded with Snow Leopard and I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and today when I got back from leaving it a few hours the screen went funny!!! (see pic) and it wont reboot. The same screen appears straight away when restarting. I have tried holding down the shift for safe start but it didnt work and also a nv/ram pram reset (but only heard one 'mac sound')
I have my old snow leopard disk..............somewhere!!! but I'm not sure if I can boot from them if I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion via the app store download??
I didnt do a boot disk! (yes I know) or a back up (yep again...I know!) so if anyone has any ideas on how to help :-) I'd be very grateful!!
    Thanks Melanie
PS is the problem called a Kernel Panic????

I'm afraid my next piece of advice you won't like. I think you need to erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac froze while surfing web last night (color pinwheel), I forced quit and now when rebooting the fan and chime come on, the monitor stays on grey and the apple sign is replaced by a stop sign and I can't get past this, is there self fix? Never backed up

iMac froze while surfing web last night (color pinwheel), I forced quit and now when rebooting the fan and chime come on, the monitor stays on grey and the apple sign is replaced by a stop sign and I can't get past this, is there self fix? Never backed up.
The computer (top / back of monitor) gets really hot within minutes.

    How old is the iMac?
With no backup, you have probably lost all your data.
Sounds like serious hardware problem for which you are going to have to take it to Apple for an estimate of repairs.

  • Movie plays once on Apple TV then wont play.. BUT works fine on our iMac

Frustrated and starting to think we should have gone with ROKU / NetFlix and Amazine Online route... Cheaper and our friends have had no issues.
Some movies we have purchased both from iTunes and direct from the Apple TV only play once then wont play again (Works fine on iTune / i Mac) also the Extra content works fine.
I have been in contact with Apple support twice with no luck in solving this problem... reconfigured the apple tv to factory settings and re-synching seems to be the only solution... BUT as soon as we update the software and re-synch back to the same problem.
Note... Each time we reconfigure / re-synch a different movie has this issue... Very inconsistent
I have seen similar issues posted... We are not getting the white screen Any ideas???

Have you tried Repopulating iTunes with the files that you have problems with.

  • My imac froze. I turned it off & on from the back

my imac froze. I turned it off & on from the back. then I got a message that some of the files got damaged and it moved them so some other folder. Now, i think i have all my music but I can't find my apps. plus, all my podacts & some TV shows are under music & i don't know how to move them to thier proper places
    Please help

I had this issue with my iPad 4. I rebooted the iPad holding down the two "start buttons," which is the home bottom on the bottom and power button on the top right, in the portrait position. Also check to see if you muted the iPad in settings or just turned down the sound all the way, or some other setting in "Sounds."  I know that may sound stupid but it's an easy fix I'd that's the problem. I'm not an expert at all but I hope this helps. I'm actually having an issue with my update. It asked for a code after the update. Now I have to use it every time and can't get rid of it. Hopefully somebody will read my post!

  • Imac froze and on re load folder with question mark appeared.  Now will not start up to home screen.

The other night my Imac froze during updates.  I found it in the morning with the screen and mouse frozen and only the loading icon spinning.  I re stared the computer from the power button.
Upon re loading the apple logo did not appear and was replaced by a folder with a question mark in the middle.  I looked this up online and found the best option was to use disk utility to check and repair the hard drive.  This showed an error with HFS.  Used disk utility to fix the hard drive so thast no error appear.  I re stared the computer but all it loaded was the folder with the question mark again, so I decided to erase the hard drive of any information (I back up quite regulary, but left it as last resort due to inconvenience), when installing again it seems to go so far before telling me it cannot install and I need to re start.  I have erased the dsk again and completed disk clean too before trying again and getting the same results.
I am currenlty stuck at this point and need help, which would be appreciated.
My Imac is an early 2008 Aluminimum model and installtion disk is 10.3

The folder with ? mark mean one of 2 things.
    1) The OS is so corrupted that the hardware can't find it as a valid way to boot the system.
    2) Your hard drive has failed.
You can try booting from the Recovery HD partition, Commadn + r keys at startup if you are running Lion Mt Lion or Mavericks.
Or boot the system from the original System reinstall DVD that came with your Mac or an upgrade OS X install DVd you may have purchased.
With either use Disk Utility to see if the hard drive is seen and if it can be erased or repartitioned and then restore from a Time Macine baclup or reinstall OS X.

  • My iMac needs to be rebooted every time I put it to sleep

My iMac needs to be rebooted almost every time when I wake it from sleeping. Is this normal?  Ether the screen darkens and it will tell me to reboot by holding down the power button or the screen is just totally blank. It's been doing it for a long time and I thought it was just mac security updates running in the backgrownd or something but it seems to be getting worse.
    Thanks

    Do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Ipad wont reboot & my sleep or lock button doesn't work??

I updated ios 7 on my ipad just yesterday. After a while I used it, then my ipad kept popping out shut down mode, and lock the screen randomly.
I tried to reboot it, my screen kept locking randomly. I tried to reboot it for three times, and for the third time, my ipad wouldn't boot up.
I connected my ipad to itunes and tried to restore my ipad.
The screen now has quitted to lock randomly. But I found out that my lock button doesn't work anymore. And the next thing I did was to reboot my ipad by pressing the sleep/lock and home button at the same time, hoping that my lock button would work again, and suddenly my ipad showed apple logo frequently without showing progress bar. And the last thing I do now is to connect my device to itunes, and it is now back on. But the lock/sleep button still not working. And I think that if I reboot my ipad again, it will give me the same problem as it wont reboot itself unless i connect it to itunes.
Please help me regarding this troubleshooting... My ipad was perfectly fine. Thanks in advance!

  • My imac froze what do I do ?

All my icons on my imac froze. I cannot open Safari or any of them. I have unplugged and rebooted several times.
    What do I do ?

    Two resets:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
