IMac G5 (iSight) Black Screen and Won't Start...HELP!

Hi,
I have an iMac G5 (iSight) PPC, 2005, model 1145.  All was running well until a couple of weeks ago (see post/thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/16191999#16191999), when I had an issue with a grey screen, no start, and spinning wheel.  Through a series of replies, it was determined that I probably had a corrupt file in the OS (10.5.8).  I did an Archive and Install of the OS and all was running very smoothly....until....NOW!!!!!!!
At this point, I cannot start up at all.  When I turn on the computer, I get a 'light', but in a few moments, the fan gets loud, stays loud, and the screen is just black.
I tried to start up from my Leopard Disk, hoping I could run the utility....but that didn't work....AND NOW I've the install disk stuck in the drive!!!!!
I also thought it might just be some bad RAM, so I took that out and tried to start up again, but that didn't work either.
At this point, I'm clueless and hope that someone might be able to offer some good advice.
Thanks,
Sandie

Just repaired my iMac G5 with complete boot failure, it all came down to capacitors, there was an industry wide use of sub standard/sub spec capacitors at the time the imac G5 was manufactured, due to a manufacturer using a capacitor recipe missing one ingredient, This caused the imac G5's to fail at a much faster rate than they should have done, I had to replace half the capacitors in the power supply and 5 of the higher rated capacitors nearest the power supplies internal vent onto the logic board once this repair was affected, my machine worked perfectly.
take the cover of the back of you imac G5 and see whether your imac version has some led diagnostic lights and check whether the power diagnostic led light lights up properly when started, there are tutorials for this on the web also a light there that indicates whether gpu is communicating with the display properly. all led internal green lights should light up, apart from the right hand one of the four.
with your dark screen and sleep light on symptoms it seems quite likely a surface mount BGA graphics chip failure, but to be honest it could also be a capacitor related issue, if your not into stripping the machine down and soldering capacitors then the machine for you is probably a right off, just try a pram reset boot before giving up, I had similar sleep light no boot scenario on a macbook pro, and a full stripdown got it booting again.
the power supply in the imac G5(als version at least) gets very hot and has no fan of its own and is dependant on the one internal left hand open motherboard fan for its cooling in my opinion it gets too hot, there is also no temp sensor for the power supply to give you an indicator as to how hot its getting, I feel the the heat venting from the overheating power supply internally is what cooked the capacitors nearest it, this is a flaw in the design of this machine. One way to reduce this issue is to perhaps use some kind of extra fan control software to boost the based speed of motherboard fan, whilst at the same time placing and extra entry quality pc fan thin filter foam on intake underneath to prevent any extra dust intake because of the fan speed increase so as to protect the machine from clogging with extra dust and heating the power supply further

My Ipad 1 has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?  It is charged.

If Paul's advice doesn't work try this.
Hold down on the sleep button AND the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart.
BTW ...In order to start up under normal circumstances you only need to hold down on the sleep button for a couple of seconds or so until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

  • G70-246US Laptop has black screen and won't start

    Hi Everyone,
I have an HP G70-246US laptop. I received an errot that the computer could not find any Boot Disks. I turned it off and rebooted the computer and it would not come back on. I see nothing but a black screen. The power button light comes on but the hard drive light does not.
There is no sound of system startup, none of the f1, options work. The power button and the wireless button are lit and the dvd player allows me to put a cd in and eject it but nothing works.
I took the hd out and put it back in to make sure it was connected securely and still nothing. I am trying to get an idea of what needs to be pinpointed before I purchase a new hard drive.
Unfortunately, I am over my one year warranty time period. I really need to figure out a resolution soon as I design websites and without my computer, I can't finish my work.
Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

With the hdd out can you access the BIOS by tapping the F10 key after powering on? If so that would pretty well point to the hdd causing the problems. Your machine came with a 160Gb SATA hdd. If you will be using your Recovery Disks to reinstall you need at least that large to use them, can be larger but no smaller.

    Thank you.

    Hello brunofig132,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your iMac is booting to a black screen and loud fans. The following article provides steps to troubleshoot the startup process for your iMac. It should give you an indication of what might be causing the problem.

  • Ipod touch 2G is black screen and won't restore in Itunes (error 21)

I have aquired an Ipod touch 2g 16g that I was hoping to make a present to my daughter with.  The device is I guess what is called "Black Screen of Death".  I can't get any image to display on the Ipod when trying to charge (which it apparenlty accepts) the item or when trying to connect it to Itunes.  Itunes recongizes the item in recovery mode, and attempts to restore the item and consistantly gives the error 21 message.  I am using Windows 7 and have tried to restore the device on a laptop running Win XP with the exact same results.  The screen will turn white during the process, and the machine will from what I have read and believe go into DFU mode, but it stops with error 21.  I am a Noob and have googled and googled for a week now with no luck.  I have tried the reinstallation of Itunes, all the updates to both Itunes and the machine, no security software, the works.  I tried connecting it to older son's laptop running Win 7 which he uses for his Ipod 2g 32 gig without problems.  My device was recognized on his machine, and he said on his Itunes he briefly saw songs on the device he did not have on his machine/device in his library before it hung again in the recovery mode loop.  I have read different articles and tutorials on jailbreaking and tried loading just the 'oem" firmware from apple with Redsnow and thought i was successful.  The device went through the process of white screen, several boots/dings of on my PC, and then an image appeared on the Ipod of "loading Jailbreak data".  After a few moments/minutes it then began what I believe is displaying the "verbose" booting running the lines of text on the screen.  I then notice it to stop and give me an error of something to the affect of init failed, and then a "lan error, watchdog timeout, giving up, a long pause, then quick scrolls down the screen and reboot back to white screen.  Holding the power button or home/power button puts it right back to a black screen and in the Itunes recovery mode loop/error 21 again.  Can anyone please help me resolve this issue before I pull what's left of my hair out.  I would love to get this working for my daughter before her birthday.  Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

Common, no one has any ideas?  Well, don't know if this will help, but here's some new data to process.  I noticed that when I was trying to load the firmware with Redsnow w/o installing any options to include Cydia I got errors displayed on the Ipod such as WMR NAND format invalid; NANDLegacyFTL failed.  Someone has got to know something.  I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts from anyone with any idea.  Thanks

  • Black screen and apple logo! Help please!

My iPod 5g running on iOS 7.6 won't turn on. It just repeats the same pattern of black screen and the apple logo over and over. Help me please!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 20" imac gets random black screen and wont wake up.

O.K. this imac randomly goes to a black screen while your using it. It looks like it's asleep accept the light in the front doesn't pulse and it wont wake up.
If I hit the power button to put it to sleep I can then wake it up.
I tried resetting the SMU but have had no luck (not sure if it's even resetting seeing the date and time are still good) not sure why seeing resetting the SMU is a very simple processes.
    It's a 20" intel imac 2GHz duo with system 10.4.11 (early 2006)
I was going to reinstall 10.4.11 to see if that helps and wanted to see if anyone else knows what to do. Its very random and seems to be getting worse, sometimes as soon as I get it fixed it goes black again. It usually only takes 15-30min after start up and doesn't matter if your using it or not.

    Hi all,
my first mac ever was also an Early 2006 20" iMac and it had the same symptons as yours late last year.
Tried all I could think of and then took it to an Apple Dealer here in Hamburg.
Turned it was the Power Supply Unit (both of them) and a repair (out of Applecare obviously) would have been in the range of about 500 Euros (material plus manhours).
So I decided to not get it repaired.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • IMac, update causing black screen and randomly powers off...?

I've seen many comment on this with few solutions.  It had never occurred until yesterday afternoon after the latest security update for Mavericks, 2014-005 v.1, was loaded and the system was rebooted.  After that moment the mac has been unusable.  It will start and after user log on, will black screen, sometimes still running and other times instantly powered off.  I have followed resetting the PRAM, and SMC procedures with no change and have booted into safe mode in order to examine the system and it is just as unstable there.  The times I have gotten it booted and running, attempting to access an earlier Time Machine backup, but before I can start reload it goes black.  The same goes while trying to check the sleep mode and security settings.  Unless this is an amazing coincidence, I believe the latest update has caused this problem and has for others as I have seen on many conversations.  Can this be uninstalled or does the drive need to get wiped and then reload from the Time Machine?
    Thanks.

Well, initial call into Apple Care and one answer.  "We have no idea what it is, we can get you an appointment at a Genius Bar in 4 days!"  4 days?!  Seriously?  At least they were kind enough to only put me on hold for 30 minutes, AND then transferred me to a "Sr. Care Specialist" who basically blew smoke up my arse only to tell me the same thing... why transfer me at all?

  • Satellite A100 has a black screen and won't load into the Bios

I bought a Satellite A100 - (model psaa8c-0fh00e) about 5 months ago. it was left on over night which is not uncommon and when i came back to use it about 15 hours later it was just a black screen. moved the touch screen and its keys and nothing happened. so i cold boot it and it turned off. i then turned it back on like normal and the notebook turns on but the screen is completely black. it's not even loading the normal Toshiba Bios screen.
Now my question: is if there is any way I can fix this, i am familar with computer and parts. I just don't get this one cause i've never had to reflash the bois or anything like that. I'm just not sure how to turn and i really don't wanna have to take it into a shop, any suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi Conrad,
If your A100 powers on normally (HDD spinning, optical drive LED flickers, fans turn etc.) then I would suspect that your LCD or FL Inverter has failed. You can check this by connecting an external monitor to the notebook to see if that shows the normal display.
On the other hand if there is no activity at all from tour notebook when you power it on then I would imagine you have an internal hardware fault, possibly the main board, which will need to be checked by a Toshiba Authorised Service Partner since the unit will still be covered by the warranty if it is only 5 months old.

  • Why does my iPad have a black screen and won't turn on even when I try charging it

I just got a survivor case today and put it on my iPad and it stopped working and just has a black screen even when I try charging it

    Not charging
    1. Reset iPad
    2. Try another wall socket
    3. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
    4. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)
    5. Clean Lightning port with compress air or new paint brush

  • My mac book pro has a white screen and won't start up

My Mac book pro has been running slow, so I thought I would shut down and reboot. It wouldn't reboot past a white screen and an apple logo. I have rebooted several times and after an hour or so it still won't go any further. Any suggestions?

    Howdy Lowana42,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook Pro has a startup issue that is causing it to only display an Apple logo. Try the suggestions in the article below, they will resolve most issues like this one.

  • HELP! brand new iMac froze during firewire transfer and won't start!!!

During my setup for my brand new iMac I follwed the directions and connected my iBook via firewire to transfer my files. I noticed after a while that my iMac was frozen on "45 minutes remaining" and the blue line wasn't wavering a bit, and after over half an hour it hadn't moved. I powered off the iBook, and still nothing happened to the iMac screen--it remained frozen. I went to the guidebook and nothing seemed to work, so I powered off and on again, only to get a flashing question mark. All this and I just bought the darn thing tonight!
Help! Anyone know what happened and more importantly how to fix it?
    Thanks.
    Lindsay

it sounds like the iBook went to sleep during the transfer or at least it's hard drive spun down.
what you need to know is hope that simply booting from your install DVD will let you repair the iMac's hard drive. You could also try booting holding down the Command S keys on startup and when you get to the Single User Mode command line prompt follow the directions there for running fsck to repair your hard drive.
Do you have a FW hard drive? Can you copy files from iBook to FW and then from there to iMac?
And, it is always nice to have a FW emergency/backup hard drive. The iMac needs a different partition scheme to be bootable from FW than the iBook does, but you can create the proper partition type etc from a Tiger Installer and put OS X on FireWire, then see if you can backup and repair your iMac's hard drive.
MicroMat's TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now shipping and is compatible, Universal Binary and bootable. Always good to have some 3rd party utility handy.
If you are just starting out, you probably don't have much if anything installed yet, so you may want to just erase your iMac drive and restore to what it was. That would be the easiest if Disk Utility won't repair it.
Instead of powering off the iBook, I would have tried to force quit whatever was running, like Migration Assistant.
