Thanks for your reply--makes me not want to get involved with Mavericks, and I appreciate the heads-up.  What I hadn't thought about is that by upgrading my OS I would also have to upgrade from my Adobe CS1.  Since I'm retired from my art career, I'm reluctant to spend the dough on new CS; but I still like using PhotoShop and InDesign (and obviously don't care that they are outmoded).  But I'll bet any newer Mac OS won't run my old software.

If you want to clean up your hard drive some, here are some of my tips, also.
Hard drive getting full or near full?
Do a search for and downlaod and install OmniDisk Sweeper and OnyX.
Here are some of my tips for deleting or archiving data off of your internal hard
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save to disc, Flash drive/s or to ext. hard drive.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded  .dmg application installer  files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to Lion, in order to use iCloud, but the specs indicate I don't have enough memory. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?

I believe your model iMac can address 3 GB RAM; the minimum for Lion is 2 GB - however, that is an absolute minimum for very light use. You would be much happier with a minimum of 4 GB.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
(You can install 4 GB, but it will only be able to address about 3.1 - 3.2 GB)

I have an iMac and a MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo processors. I realize that this is within the stated requirements for Lion.  However was wondering if by migrating to Lion this will result in too much demand on processor resources, thus a slower machine than using Snow Leopard?

Which iMac?  Which Macbook?   Both have had several model
itertations, even within the framework of a Core2Duo processor.
With that said, I have an early 2009 iMac 24", with 2.66 GHz
Core2Duo with 8 gig of RAM, and in my opinion, seems to be running
    smoother and faster with Lion.

  • What version of osx would give an Imac 24'' 2.3 ghz intel core 2 Duo, with 4gb of DDR2 SDRAM, the best performance? To do illustration and design jobs.

What version of osx would give an Imac 24'' 2.3 ghz intel core 2 Duo, with 4gb of DDR2 SDRAM, the best performance? To do illustration and design jobs.
Would the more recents os versions increase the overall performance? Is it worth it?

    Hello!
Snow Leopard is what i am currently using. But i guess it does need some clean up and maybe a clean install to see if it gets faster.
I believe 4gb is the limit for this model, although i've seen some with 6gb…
    Thank you for the help

  • IMac 20-inch 2.66GHz intel core 2 Duo Freezes.

iMac 20-inch 2.66GHz intel core 2 Duo Freezes. I'm running OSX 10.8.4. Please don't tell me the problem is the memory, because I've read a lot of people complaining about the same problem back on 10.6.2 version. I know I need to put more memory on that, but I'll not purchase more right now because I'm not sure it'll worth it. Unless I discover the real solution, I'll not invest in this computer. I've been using Apple products for over 12 years and it's the first time I have an unsolved problem. I'm really sad about that.
Did someone really discovered what happens?
    I'll appreciate a solution.
    Thank you.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Follow the instructions the developer provided. I'd take #3 the "Both" option.  After doing this restart the computer in Safe Mode this will clear some caches, then restart normally and test.  Post back with results.

    thank you.

You need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD from the online Apple Store -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard. After you've installed, make sure that you upgrade to the latest version - 10.6.8.

  • My iMac has gotten very slow lately

    Hi!
    I have an iMac 21.5-inch, purchased August 2010.  OS X 10.8.5
Lately it is been running very slow.  I double-click on an image, and Preview takes 30 seconds to open it.
I have done some reading and ran the EtreCheck report.  I see there are some things in red, but i don't know what they mean, and how to fix.  Any help would be so useful to me!  Thanks!

    Hello,
I recommend you do the following steps to make your mac go faster:
upgrade to 8GB of ram, especially since you have 2 free RAM slots in your Mac (the ratio for in/out shows that your RAM is used between 5 and 10 times too much, because of lack of RAM.
try using a bigger external drive for you Time Capsule Backups (your iMac drive is 500GB, so i'd suggest at least 500GB)
your drive is currently 320GB and it is full, so every hour, the mac is deleting older backups to make room for the new, and this slows down the mac.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    James

  • Imac Intel core 2 duo 10.5.8 running slow

My Imac is suddenly operating slower and slower and slower with the colored ball ever present. I had just decided the need to update to Lion last wk and have recognised that Snow Leopard is needed first- I know I am behind the time!lol. I have just bought Snow Leopard online (waiting to arrive...), do I try and fix my current problem of a slow operating system now or just load in the newer OS and hope my issue will be resolved?
I initially thought it was an internet issue but my laptop has not internet problems and yesterday, switching between Word and Safari is resulting a ridiculious waste of time ! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

It is not prudent to Upgrade any system that is not performing properly...

  • IMac Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.2 GHz

Hello. A school system recently got new iMacs with the following specs:
Intel core 2 duo 2.2 ghz with 1gb of ram and OS X 10.6.4.
I work on Dells 98% of the time but looking at Apple's website, I can tell these iMacs are not current.
Can someone please explain how a school system would get iMacs this old?
I think these were in storage for at least two months.
Do you think these were refurbs that the school system received in mid 2010?
I don't know the exact screen size but I can get that info the next time I'm in front of one.
When going to about this mac it said 2.2 ghz.
I have searched everywhere and cannot find an iMac core 2 duo at 2.2.
Just wondering if the school system got hoodwinked.

Would this be the models you are talking about:

+Can someone please explain how a school system would get iMacs this old+
Since these are user to user forums, how do you expect any end user here to know the answer to that question? How about asking the school or the vendor they were purchased from? However, I'd guess that they were possibly overstocks and purchased or received as such.
If they are new and running 10.6.4 but only have 1 GB RAM, I'd recommend at least doubling that. RAM is rather inexpensive; just make sure you get the exact specs by purchasing from places such as Crucial or OWC (macsales.com); iMacs are finicky about their RAM.

  • RAM maxi for iMac 2,4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

thanks a lot in advance : is it a good idear to have 6 GB in RAM DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz-( 4GB + 2 GB )-
    on my iMac,  processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ( 20-inch ) ?

    This one ?
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.4-20-inch-alu minum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
If you or your Mac really needs the 6GB RAM than sure.
The slight decrease in speed due to not using paired-RAM isn't comparable to the gain you get from the additional RAM.
Have you used Activity Monitor as described in here Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor to determine whether you need more RAM ?

  • IMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo - OS upgrade advice needed

Im running an Apple iMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo with OS Tiger 10.4.7.
I am planning to upgrade to Leopard. However...I thought it would be as easy as just purchasing installation discs for Leopard. Now I find out that the install might not work on an Intel machine? Is this correct? Not as easy as just buying a 'OS Leopard box set' on eBay for example - do I have to actually make sure its OS Leopard Intel? Iv looked on eBay and THEY DONT SELL 'OS LEOPARD INTEL' DISCS!!
Secondly - my girlfriend wants to use my old 'Install 10.4.7 discs' on her G3, Im guessing because they came with my Intel machine -that they wont work on a different machine? You can imagine Im quite wary of running a OS upgrade on another machine if its going to pear shaped.
    HELP!

First an iMac G5 is not an Intel Core 2 Duo. You have either an iMac G5 PPC or an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. That said, the retail disks for Leopard will work on either a PPC or Intel, so you should be good to go.
Second your iMac machine specific disks will not work on another machine let alone a PPC. They are machine specific to your model iMac.

  • Is there a noticable difference between G5 and Intel Core 2 Duo-processor?

    Just wondering...
I have a G5 iMac and came across the Intel Core 2 Duo-processor 24" 2.66GHz. Will I notice a big difference between these 2 models?
    André

    I swapped from a G5 2.1MHz iSight with 2.5GB RAM to 2009 iMac 24" 2.66 MHz with 4GB of DDR3.
    The difference was HUGE.
Now with Snow Leopard as well things have only got faster (or appear to at least)
The whole system is more responsive, less spinning beach ball and rendering a 40 minute TV programme to MP4 only takes about 2 minutes!
I used to have time to make a cup of coffee and catch the news headlines!
    Enjoy the new machine.
