Image in a layer mask with gradient problem

Hi,
I have a image in a layer mask with an gradient on a 30c0m0y100k background and at the gradient from image to background I always get a white "shine". which NOT appears when the background is the standard photoshop-black definition in all colors.
please have look also here (where the problem is): http://adobe.ly/1yXBCix
and here where it looks like I want to have it (where I switched the layer mode of the mask to multiply and that causes that my background is not anymore 30c0m0y100k): http://adobe.ly/1HFZfC4
thanks a lot!

  • Layer mask with background animation

    Hi all,
I am looking to create a video for my YouTube channel using Layer Mask but I am not too competent in using masks.
The logo for my channel is here:
I would like to create a moving background in where the coloured image is but I want to mask out the white areas and keep the text on top. Is it as simple as just creating a hexagonal layer mask with the text in a separate layer?
    Thanks in advance,
    M

Another way is to use a track matte.

  • Monitors with Gradient Problems?

    Hi All,
Further to my recent post "monitor screen display terrible!"
Finding a monitor without spending a lot with excellent picture quality is proving differcult! I have tried a Philips 22" monitor Model 220CW9FB and now a BENQ T900HD 18.5 WS monitor all not as sharp with good contrast as my 4 year old G5 iMac. Also has a gradient problem e.g. as you get up off your chair and continue to look down at the screen the white background of the screen turns light blue then darker and colored parts turn white!? Also looking at an angle to the side anything light blue turns a light brown!? Then as I'm viewing something as in Apple Discussions each box of replies alternate white then light blue and so on but looking at normal distant as you type each box are white. You have to lean back in your chair, twice the distance back to actual see the blue box then white box!?
What's that all about? I have noticed this on the new 20" iMacs too but the three new 24" iMacs are great just like my Rev A G5 iMac of 4 years. Are these inferior screen problems anything to do with them being TN panels as I've just read about?
I really don't know where to go from here as the screen quality is important. I'm use to the great screen quality of my old G5 iMac and don't want to go down in quality for the sake of moving from a Mac PowerPC to an Intel Core 2 Duo even though I need this for EyeTV hybrid and all the features of iLife '09 etc.
I don't want to spend a huge amount for an Apple display as I might as well get the entry level 24" iMac. The main reason for not getting the new iMac is I don't like the glossy screen, although today I heard there is an option for a 24" matt screen... any truth in that? Then again will I be able to return the new Mac mini I've only had for 6 days for a 24" iMac?
Other suggestions seen here is turning my G5 iMac into a stand-a-loan monitor or maybe a 20-year-old CRT 19" TV I have can be used as a monitor and if so what connections are needed? Any ideas on these options?
So buying the new Mac mini has created a lot of unexpected problems. I thought as asked about before getting it was told any monitor would have the same picture quality as my old G5 iMac, but after the fact found out this is not the case.
Thanks for the read & any ideas/thoughts much appreciated...

AFAIK Hmmm Googled "As Far As I Know"... So far I've tried three monitors (all with gradient problem) so it looks like you are correct. I'll try a couple more today as if I need to return my Mac mini with Philips monitor need to do soon for a 24" new iMac even though the Mac mini is not at fault. I'll have to get use to the glossy screen. While writing this an item "iMac or MacBook display too glossy? Apply inexpensive non-glare LCD protective film" has appeared in MacDailyNews.
    http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/20561/
Thanks for the idea using my G5 as a monitor but maybe quite an involved process?
It's a shame in all my research before buying a monitor no salesperson mentioned TN display panels. Mind you since the problem no salesperson has said they know about TN display panels or better monitors, just saying any monitor will work with the new Mac mini. Very frustrating!

  • Layer Mask with Adjust Skin Tones?

Is there a way to use a layer mask with the adjust skin tone option in PE4? I like what it did to the skin , but not what it did to the wall in the photo. Thanks.

Hi Jon there are at least three ways.
#1..Make a selection.. then apply the skin tone option. Only the selected area will be active.
#2... Duplicate the layer you want to work on. Apply the skin tone. Then hold the Ctrl key and make a new layer. The new blank layer will be below the layer with the skin tone. Then hold the Alt key and click between the two layers to group them. The skin tone will disappear but you can paint it back with a black brush, or remove with an eraser. Just be sure to have the blank layer active.
#3... Duplicate and apply tone as in #2. Open an adjustment layer, like levels, directly below the skin tone layer. Click ok do not make any adjustments. Then as above hold the Alt key and click between the layers to group them, look for the link symbol. Now you can remove with a black brush or add with a white brush.

  • Layer mask brush/gradient tool not working in black.

I have cannot paint in black to conceal on a layer mask.  I have "NORMAL" mode set and the foreground color is set to black.  When I paint or use the gradient tool in "normal" mode with black it paints to transparent.   Before the uprade it was normal.   I have this problem on both CS6 apps pc-and-laptop.  I am lost here.  Can I get someone to help a brother out...
    Thanks,
    Kenny

    Same issue, please see below:
    Given:
         Photoshop 12.1 x64 on OS X 10.7
    Problem:
Painting with black and using the 'gradation tool' inside a 'white' (everything exposed) layer mask is NOT WORKING:
    The facts:
         1) Using a black-to-white gradation in a white layer mask is not working.
         2) Using a black-to-transparent gradation in a white layer mask is not working.
         3) But, a using a white-to-black gradation in a black layer mask is working.
         4) or, using a white-to-transparent gradation in a black layer mask is working.
This used-to work. Shall we keep an eye out for a fix or is Adobe going to back-out this bug from the update that broke this?

  • Layer Mask Print Frame Problems

I have several older movies that have recently stopped
printing properly and I can't figure out what has changed that
would make this error happen. Basically I have a template set up to
print in the print frame of the Flash movie and when I go to print
the layer masks on the template are being ignored. These files
haven't been changed in years and I've now tested the movies on
several computers and versions of Flash. Any ideas of why my layer
    masks are suddenly being ignored?

    Things to double check:
Look in at your options bar and make sure your gradient tool is set to normal blend mode in the options bar. Also check that it is set to 100% opacity.
Make sure your gradient is black and white or black to transparent...not white to transparent.
Since reset preferences did not work, I'm thinking it might be user error. If neither of the above is the problem, post a screen grab of your application workspace. Someone may see a setting that is creating an issue. Be sure to have the gradient tool selected  so we can see the options bar and tool box. Include your open layers palette in your screen shot also.
    Making a screen grab...
Either use Vista's snip tool to capture your workspace or use your keyboard's print screen button. If you use the print screen, go to File<New Document...from clipboard after pressing your keyboard's print screen button. Next, Edit<Paste or hit ctrl + V to paste your clipboard image into the open document. Save the image using File<Save For Web and save as a jpg on your desktop to make it easy to find. Upload the image to the forum by using the camera icon in the post box.

  • What do you do when painting on a layer mask with the correct color dosen't work?

I have been trying to do some compositing but when i paint with white on a black layer mask or black on a white layer mask, NOTHING HAPPENS.  What should I be looking for?  Is there an adjustment that needs to be set a certain way?  I would also like to know how you open multiple images in one document with each image on it's own layer. Thanks...

Everything is set correctly... still nothing.
I want to use a texture and an image.  I have them both in the same document, but the only way to get the texture to allow the image to show through is to reduce the opacity. That's not the look I want.  I tried clipping the two different images together, but then I could only see the photo itself and no texture.  I just don't understand why when I set things correctly they don't work.
One other question if I may?  Everything, all of a sudden is opening in Preview instead of with PS as it has always been in the past.  I don't recall changing any settings.  What should I look for to make PS my default...
Oh and one more thing. When I click on Safari photoshop goes missing and Safari shows.  If I click on photoshop then Safari goes missing.  This is INCREDIBLY annoying and I don't know why it's doing that. Both these things started at the same time.  I'm on a Mac.

  • How to paste an image on a layer mask?

    Hi All,
I've just started using PS Elements 10 again after not having used it for some time, and I've forgotten a few things. When I paste an image which I've selected from another image (image A) into a layer mask for image B, the image A selection appears in black and white. Also, is there a quick way to return PS Elements 10 to its default settings? I'd be grateful if you could help with these questions. Cheers!

    Hi Again Michel,
I guess I'd better say what I'm trying to do and then maybe you can help me. Maybe I'm not using the correct tool. What I wanted to do is cut a person from an image and superimpose this person on a second image. I thought I did this using the layer mask. When I do this, and look at the background image, all I can see is an outline of the shape of the person's image on the second image. Can you perhaps point me to a video which explains how to do this. I thought I had to use a layer mask to do this. Thanks for staying with me.

  • Masking with brush problem

Why in mask with brush set to white it makes parts erased with black reappear, but especially black isnt black anymore, with closer look I can see "tiles" of background....when I use Lasso tool on the same area and "delete" it while having set black color, the black on the image is "black" again...is there some way to get it "black" with brush too ?
Maybe I searched wrong keywords or just didnt know what to search, but I didnt find anyone asking about this problem.
    Thanks

Looking at your screenshot, I think it may be because you have your color settings to "Grayscale Slider".  If you are working on this image for the web you can change the color settings to "RGB Slider" or "CMYK Slider", for example.  Basically, as long as you have it set on "Grayscale Slider" you will only get grayscale colors.
You can change this setting by clicking the dropdown in the Color tab in the upper right side of your screen.  See image below.  Let me know if this helps.

  • Can you designate an image as a layer mask?

I've been wondering if this is possible for a long time -- say I have an awesome grayscale image that I want to use as a layer mask for another layer. Is there a way to make that happen?

Copy your image to the clipboard (i.e. Select All>Copy)
Then Alt or Option click on the layer mask and Edit>Paste

  • Turned off automatic layer masks with adjustment layers - want them back

I somehow turned off the option that creates a layer mask automatically when creating a new adjustment layer.  I need that feature back, but I cannot locate it anywhere in photoshop or on google.  Does anyone know how to reset that option?  I am using CS5.  Thanks!

Thanks. That is what I have been tying to find, but I am afraid I need a little more guidance.  I am in the layers panel and clicked on the arrow to the right and I have no options to select this.  Here is what I am looking at:
Then when I select panel options I get this - not what I am looking to fix:

  • Why doesn't masking with gradient layer work when regular gradient does?

If I make a regular gradient over a layer, and make it's opacity 0, and have it on 'shallow knockout', it will knockout the layer below along the 'lines' of the gradient.
However, when I make a gradient layer to do the same, and set opacity down to zero, it doesn't seem to work.  Why?

If I was a more advanced artist, then I might know better when I can merge things and not, but right now, I'm a wanna be artist coming from an engineering background, where when I can't grok a whole picture, I break it down in to parts and combine them.
Like when then hand didn't look right or I needed fingers to be relocated, I brok apart the hand and fingers so could relocate them
separately then reshade them after they were in place.
Another set of things i've kept separate (are about 50-80 'hair strands'  most of which have a unique color, then have a another
layer for texturing -- painting the texture onto the color made it impossible to change the look of the texture when it was wrong -- and I've changed it several times, because it didn't look right or came up with a better process/way of doing it.  Then there's usually an effect layer on top of that to apply shadowing to the strand, give it a bit of 3-dimensionality, and sometimes multiple or add or something with the layers below for emphasis.
On change I made -- which helped, I started with all 3 layers in a group.  and 'N' groups... (still have manny like that.. but a new section I started putting base strands in 1, group , then a copy of those layers, blanked and then painted with texture (that's usually brushed on )..., And it seem the only way to apply an effect to one set or the other (or both) is to convert them to smart objects, which still allows editing (but, unfortunately, also stores them in the same file)...
My eye's, have grown.. ll starting out in a few things, then they got more complex... as I didn't know how to really make an eye look good, so I started w/parts...and ended up with 15 layers/eye (not counting groups... things likke eyebase white, irsibase base, iris color, (base is back to pupil layer somewhere above can punch through to a black layer -- at one point (but backed off that approach, even tried to put some nerves and veins on the iris base...)..... then there's the circles of fibers that make up the iris pattern, various
tints for various fluids and transparent structures, .. YIEKS...
Not making any claims about this being a best or even good way, but when you are learning, and especially whern you come from
an engineering background where you are usd to building thigns up out of parts, .. you don't want to weld your parts together before you are at the final product...and even then, ..... what if you want to make a change?!...
Again, newbie-problem more than likely...with too much software engineering background...
Adobe should really have doing part-time work doing product usability/abusability/stability evals... I've pressed it over the limites more than once, and had to redo the way I do things to stay with in its relavtively easy (for me) to hit limits...
Like the one I posted about the layers slowing things down... trivial to rproduce...yet sounds like Adobe never heard of it.
Another parallel problem I ran into/noticed the other day -- when I MOVED, 90% of the layers (somehow they got out of alignment with 10% that were still in the origninal... could be related to a move/cancel bug I run into too often as well, which, fortunately, has a not too difficult workaround).  But I moved 90% of those layers, and it only used 2 cpu's out of 6 (and no GPU usage).... took about 45 -60 seconds .. it was a *simple* +/- xy, (no rotations).. so it was something that could have been done in parallel, easily and wouldn't have been compute bound...
The other bug I've run into WAAY too often, is when trying to move an object, if I don't caefully try to nudge it with rotate, or move a
side, 1st, but instead, just put my pen in the middle of the object, to try to drag it -- it almost ALL the time, selects some base layer and moves some large percentage of the layers -- in a visually corrupting way... since when you hit escape to break out of the 'free movement)., the parts don't go back to where they belong and stay offset and random places...
But it's a visual problem only...I think (not sure how my 90% got moved),  -- if you SAVE the file, then make a slight change, and then revert to the just saved copy, it cleans all up.  so it's just the display that's messed up.
Anyway, slowly over time, all the layers that I originally had a paint or gradient layers surrounded with a vector, I slowly (interspersed with other stuff) converting them to fill/gradient layers which take up comparatively no space.  Really speeds up manipulation of those
    objects as well...
But it's slowgoing and the interface for creating a gradient to match an existing one is very awkward to use...It's too bad when you
create a gradient or paint layer to BEGIN with, that it's not automatically created as a vector  Then, when you start to paint on it,
it creates a layers sized to your painting applied on top of the existing fill layer...would save all the space take by the pixels that were formula driven...   Would be so much more powerful -- only storing as bits the things you need to store as bits, rather than defaulting
to 'bits' for everything (which really consumes resources!)...
Personally, Another feature but this might be specialty, or not..... but as I designed my things with parts, it would be nice to be
able to specify XY coordinate tie points between layers -- so if I moved a layer shaped like a stick, attached to another stick,
by 1 point at each end, changing the angle of the first would change the angle of the 2nd like a 'joint' -- not like a solid rod.... that
would be VERY cool!..but not holding my breath on that.
Just getting the current features to work would be nice...like the gradient masking layer... no reason that shouldn't work, but there ya go.
Maybe you know this one (unrelated...)... But I've more than once run out of temporary space (even with usually 130-150GB on my temp store.  The thing is, is that adoe doesn't use any of the extra 56GB I have in my Pagefile -- I can't tell it to use more than 100%
of physical memory -- (i.e. so it would use part of the page file).  I have 48GB mem, and 56GB pagefile, that's on an SSD., I'd
rather have it page to the SSD before writing temp files to disk...
If it could force pages out, to the pagefile, before resorting to a spill file, would save on space and possible speed depending on
the config...  But , eh, C'est la vie.
Meanwhile, I's still ike to figure out how to solve the orignal problem, but I'm beginning to think it looks like a core bug...so it maybe hard to get around.
Thanks for your comments!  As usually, appreciated!...

  • Stationary layer mask with moving image in iWeb?

    Hi everyone,
I have a an image that I only want 1/4 of revealed. I want to animate the image so that it moves across the opening of the mask (like someone passing by a window).
    Is this possible in iWeb?
    Have a great summer everyone,
    Joe

Thank You for the links- this is a real education!- and after you rewrite the code where do you put it in iWeb? Do you paste it into a text box? Is the code embedded into the iWeb file or is it a link to a server outside the file?
Sorry about all the questions- I'm just trying to understand the technology so I can make a decision of where to start learning. I am looking for the simplest path to follow.

  • Put a image from web on indesign with quality problem....

    Hello,
sorry my english, but I'll try...
I need use a lot of images from web, to make a document designed on indesign, and after try with all extension or formats, I mean, tif, png, pdf, jpg, psd, with different resolutions, 72, 150, 300, and different bit depths, 8, 16, 32, and no way... always the image when I put on indesign the image appear pixelate or with bad quality...
can you help me with that?
Is urgent, because is for my thesis work...
    thank you..

...Now, it seems strange that in word, the images work better than indesign... The subject is that I want work with indesign, because I thought that this software was designed for this theme... and then, you think that there is not a solution for this problem?
    pablovenegas,
Please realize that Microsoft Word is specifically designed for word processing application, while Adobe InDesign is specifically designed for high-quality professional-grade layout application –where InDesign outputs highest-quality output. I don't use Word app for years.
To place images onto InDesign document, it is recommended that you place HIGHEST QUALITY of image - at least 300ppi. If you place 72ppi on InDesign, it is HOW you place that specific web-quality image on InDesign. InDesign didn't do anything wrong, it is HOW you put the web image on.
Word of advice, do you have a permission to use all of those web images captures off the Internet without website owner, or any copyright owner's written permission. If you haven't done so, just stop doing what you are doing (web screen captures off these webistes for your own benefit or pleasure, but cannot use any of these images for commerical use). Just free two-cent advice. In closing, all I can say, be cautious and careful.
    Best of luck!

  • Opacity mask with gradient not printable?

I am trying to use a background in Illustrator that is made from a new effect called Opacity Masks in Creative Cloud.
It groups two layers which can have transparent areas and then gradates them with a gradient. They grow gradually more transparent revealing the surface of the tube below. My printer says I cannot do this on flex press. Will not work in pre-press? Is this true?

Opacity Masks have been available in AI since at least CS3. CC might have made them easier to work with, but they're not new. They may have to be "flattened" to separate correctly.
