IMovie Problems (Image size etc.)

Please see this link for a detailed description the problem.

Dual G4 Tower   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Your "question02" seems to be OK. I would have done the calculations via a different route, though. But the end result is similar:
Your calculations seem to use PAL so I use PAL in my example:
PAL DV sampling matrix is 720x576, but PAL actual active picture size is 702x576, and the pixel aspect ratio for both is 128:117 = ~1.094.
http://www.iki.fi/znark/video/conversion/
Now, when those 702 and 720 horizontal square pixel rows are scaled to rectangular pixel rows on a TV, they are multiplied by the pixel aspect ratio 128:117 which gives us 768 for the actual active picture width and and ~788 for the sampling matrix width (the height remains the same).
Notice that 768:576 = 4:3 -- THAT is the 4:3 ratio on a TV! On the other hand the 788x576 square pixel sampling matrix figure includes 10+10 pixels on the left+right that can consist of black pixels. The pixels are black if the source is analog. But if the source is DV, then there usually is real material on the sides, too.
If the imported square pixel image's ratio is 788x576 (or any other similar ratio), THEN iMovie won't add black borders to it because it fits exactly to the 720x576 rectangular pixel sampling matrix. Usually it is best to use some larger multiple of those figures like 1024x749, 2048x1497, 2101x1536 etc so iMovie can better downscale the imported image (sometimes iMovie does this suboptimally thus rendering the images TOO sharp which causes flickering on an interlaced TV but I won't now go into that).
With 16:9, the ratio is (16:9):(4:3) = 4:3 larger than with 4:3. Multiply 702 and 720 with 4:3 and with the pixel aspect ratio 128:117 so you get the corresponding square pixels 1024 and ~1050. Notice that 1024:576 = 16:9 -- THAT is the 16:9 ratio on a TV!
Also then the 1050x576 sampling matrix includes extra material on the left+right that should NOT be included in the 16:9 aspect ratio calculations (a common mistake!). If the imported images' ratio is 1050x576, THEN iMovie won't add black borders to them because it fits exactly to the 720x576 rectangular pixel sampling matrix.
With NTSC the calculations are the same although some figures look weird: NTSC DV sampling matrix is 720x480, but NTSC actual active picture size is 710.85x486 (weird but true!), and the pixel aspect ratio is 4320:4739 = ~0.912.
So the square pixel NTSC actual active picture size is 648x486. 648:486 = 4:3 -- as weird as it may sound THAT is the 4:3 ratio on a TV!
Square pixel NTSC sampling matrix is 656x480. If the imported image's ratio is 656x480, then iMovie won't add black borders to it. ...but usually it is better to use an image that haven't to be upsampled in any direction so a similar ratio like like 720x527, 1024x751, 2048x1502, 2095x1536 etc can be used instead (BTW, iMovie HD 5-6 save still images as 720x528, which is a nice "coincidence").
With 16:9 the square pixel NTSC the actual active picture size is 864x486. 864:486 = 16:9 -- as weird as it may sound THAT is the 16:9 ratio on a TV!
With 16:9 the square pixel NTSC the sampling matrix is ~875x480. If the imported images' ratio is 875x480, then iMovie won't add black borders to it.
Now, didn't all that make sense!

  • Changing sizes etc.

    Hi Guys
Can someone tell me why Photoshop keeps changing settings for placing objects, image size etc.?
For example: I create a new Photoshop document:
         ppi: 300
         Width: 160 mm
         Heigth: 160 mm
after clicking "OK", these go to 160,2 mm or less than 160 mm.
The same with the sizes and places of objects etc. I create a 20 x 20 mm circle. One click later it is 19,89 x 19,89. I set it's location to X: 80 mm, Y: 80 mm. One click later: 80,02mm
Is this a "problem" that can be solved?
    Thanks!

Change the units to Pixels/centimetre and use 120 - that comes close enough.
It's an interesting concept though, and one that causes problems for an awful lot of new users of apps like Photoshop, Elements etc. Until very recently, Photographic Societies accepted digital image competition entries at a maximum 1024 (horizontal) by 768 pixels (vertical). It is amazing how hard that seemed to be for most new Camera Club members. They would either submit images at full res, or if a portrait mode image, submit their images at 1024 pixels high. A lot of competition organisers _still_ state a DPI for competition entries (usually 72), but I suppose it is possible that it could conceivably affect the displayed sized of the image — although I can’t think of anything other than printing where that would hold true.
In the last nine months or so, I have seen requests for entries at 1400x1050 (which maintains the aspect ratio of SVGA) through 1600x1400 (which is almost square, and the projectors are VERY expensive).  Thankfully, our National body PSNZ decided to make 1080p the new standard from May this year, which while having a 16:9 aspect ratio, at least the projectors are affordable.

  • Problem with image size, please help!

I have spent the last week editing several photos I took for my cousin of his newborn baby (removing backgrounds/people, editing colours etc etc).
I went to get them printed but the image size is only around 800 x 400 pixles. I checked my original images from my camera and their 4000 x 3000, why are my photos once imported into photoshop suddenly being drastically reduced in size?
Really need some help here as I'm afraid I might have lost a whole weeks work as the images are now too small to get decent prints from.
    Thanks,
    Sacred

The pixel measurements are 3000 x 4000 when taken straight off my camera but for some reason after editing the photo its gone down to 800 x 800, this wouldnt be too much of a problem but its at a density of 300dpi where as the original pictures are at 72dpi.
I've tried my hardest to replicate the problem all afternoon going through the various stages of importing, editing and saving that I normally do and I can't get it to do it again? Really confused as to whats happened, its not the first time though I had the same problem back in 2007 after shooting someones wedding, edited a few of the photos (no cropping) then found the sizes had dropped drastically.
As far as I know I don't have any scripts, actions or image processes set up to do anything on any of my images.
When I open the file I've retouched its gone from a printable measurement of 60 x 40 inches to a printable measurement of 3 x 3 inches, this image has been extensivly cropped (just over half to 3/4) but no where near as small as 3 x 3 printable inches (I'm talking in printable size and not pixles because it can be missleading as saying the size in pixles doest equate to a physical size).
From what I can tell the image has changed size after editing and saving, I only noticed a few days later when I attempted to have the image printed that it had reduced in size so much. Which leads me to believe that the image problem must stem from the way its being saved each time??
Thanks a lot for your help and time guys

  • I'm trying to get the image to print correct size.  i've tried center image, fit to media image,  and they all come out the same size...smaller than the size in "image size".  is this an Epson problem or Photoshop problem.  Thanks!

I just got a new printer...Epson R3000...but have had this problem before.  It's probably a simple fix, but I can't figure it out.  I'm asking for printing on 8.5 x 11 and the image comes out 6.5 x 9.5 every time.  Help please!  And thanks!

The Epson site stated that the R3000 printer can print borderless however the quality will suffer in the expanded print area. Borderless is not supported on some heavy paper.  To me the means your better off limiting you images size to the standard print area. There will be magins about 1/8" on the four  sides so the print area on 8.5"x11" paper is 8.26" x 10.76"....
Take note of the print size set by the epson driver it may change depending on the paper type set. Note my first epson 4800 setup where I set 8.5" x 11" sheet paper from tray into the printer setting the driver set a smaller size for the paper which was reflected into the Photoshop Print preview. It shows paper is 8.499" x 10.999 with a small unprintable area across the top....

Since the quality of any particular brand or type of paper may be changed by the manufacturer at any time, Epson cannot guarantee the quality of any non-Epson brand or type of paper. Always test a sample of paper stock before purchasing large quantities or printing large jobs.

  • Problem with Image - Image Size (Photoshop CC 2014 Mac.) I get a small square shape in place of a curser

I tried resizing an image.  I click on Image then Image Size and no dialog box to change the size comes up.  Instead when I move the cursor over the image a small square replaces the cursor.  All the choices in the "Image" drop down turn light gray.  If I hit "Escape" Everything looks normal.   Problem went away when I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it, but it came back.

    Two ideas:
Open Image > Image Size and hold down the Option key. The Cancel button will change to Reset. Click on it.
    That may work.
    If not,
Try a Preferences reset from the keyboard.
    Close Photoshop
Press and hold down Cmd-Opt-Shift   Start Photoshop. Look for  delete settings dialog and click on "Yes"
Then after Photoshop loads, try the Image Size again.

  • Image size and format for IMovie

I am trying to make a short stop motion animation in IMovie. I have made my images in Adobe illustrator. I transfer the images into IMovie as JPEGS.the images, which are basically line drawings, look sharp and clean but as soon as you watch them as moving pictures they become broken up.
what am I doing wrong? does this have to do with my image size or format?

iDVD will try to downsize the image to work, but your TV often will overscan with the result being edges clipped off. The amount of clipping can vary, so the "TV Safe" settings will typically be the center 80-90% of the image. So, if you add a border that makes the image 10-15% larger, that should display the whole image. For example, if you had a 150 dpi image that was 640x480, you could put a 10% border on it so the final image was 704x528.

  • Image size problem

I was editing a catalog, the pictures were full size, eg. 2270 x 1704.  Noticed on the 931th image and forward, the image sizes are small, eg. 580 X 440.  Also, when looking at the pics on the hard drive, the sizes of the pictures had changed from MB for the first 930 pictures to KB for the rest of the pictures.  2 Questions:
    1.  How could this have happened?  The pictures were all downloaded from the camera (1 year ago) at the SAME time.  I do not remember changing any settings on the camera when the pictures were taken that would have impacted the image size.  This seems to have happened also on other occasions, ie. I get a mix of image sizes for some reason.
    2.  Now that it seems I have to live with the smaller images, will they be a problem if I want to enlarge them or show them on a large TV screen?

The small images are only around 110K to 200 KB.

  • Transparency problems when I distort Pdf image size (ie: 100%x99%) then Export. Is there away to fix

I sometimes have transparency problems when I distort PDF image size (i.e.: 100%x99%) then Export. Is there away to fix.   Or at least be able to preflight and know I have an issue.

Mostly I have seen borders and drop shadows that will just go away or other wise not print right but only when I distort the image and only on very complicated large PDF images.  When I print it at same % both horz and vert. this problem goes away.

  • N8 contacts photos problem - big image size

So I attached photos to my contacts using ovi suite. I used various size photos, some from camera, some from FB, some from somewhere else. But I have few problems:
First - photos appear correct in phone book, but then I make or receive call image is zoomed in and I usually see callers chest, shoulder or whatever else, but not face, this also reduce image quality for some reason. And all images I attached is at least 640x480.
Second - apparently ovi suite doesn't resize images and just save images in original size. This means, if i take photo of my friend and then attach it to his contact, it will take up 1MB or more depending on camera.
And we come to third - there is no indication of resolution used in contacts photos, so I can't even resize all images manually (despite the fact, that this would be absurd anyway).
Conclusion: it take a bit of time for images to load in contact book, because of bigger resolution, than required; no idea what that resolution is; photos are big enough but still got zoomed in during calls.
Please if someone knows the solution, tell me. I've been googling around for about two weeks, with no luck..
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I tried what Symbian_fan suggested and it works fine. However, images in contacts still doesn't load instantly (probably firmware problem), but size reduced from 1MB to 250KB for for 24 images I experimented on. If anyone wants to modify photos in computer (what I suggest if you have many contacts), N8 uses 290x290 resolution for images of contacts.
On the other hand, I still haven't tested adding 290x290 photos via Ovi Suite. There is posibility that it still can mess up images. I'll probably try latter and report back.

  • Problem When Take Dump - Image Size Increase

    Dear developers
I Am Developing An E-Archive Program Using Oracle Developer 6i Based On Oracle 9i (Intermedia - Ordimage Column To Save Document Image ) .
And I Have A Problem With The Size Of The Dump File Whenever I Try To Take A Backup For The Database The File Size Is Very Huge.
The Origin Of That Is The Increase Of The Images Size After Have Been Saved On The Table ( If The Image Is About 12 kb On Hard Disk , Its Size Become 100 kb At The Database - I Used Database Studio To Know The Increase At The Table space - The Table Which Have the Images Have Its Owen Table space ).
Did Any One Know Why That Happen ? And How To Mange That Increase Of Size? How To Make The Dump File With The Minimum Size ?
    Thanks
    Bassem Halawa

Have you followed the performace suggestions in the interMedia documentation? I don't see how you could have obtained the increase you claim, but perhaps a database that is very poorly tuned for images? Or, more likely, the file size does not indicate actual disk space used, and instead indicates a extent. I will ask the performance folks if this increase is even possible.

  • Image size and placement problems

I recently posted my website with iWeb. It shows up well on some computers, but on some computers the image is too large to fit on the screen and (bizarrely) the image sometimes starts halfway down the screen. This seems to happen without regard to browswers -- I have had problems on Firefox, Safari, and Explorer, but have also had it show up fine on all three of those browsers (on different computers).
I checked that the padding around the image is zero. What else could I change? I understand that the image could appear as a different size on different computers, but I don't understand why the image should show up halfway down the screen on some and on the top (as it should be) on other computers. Thanks!

The image apparently was added it to the page since it can be clicked on and dragged to the desktop. The image size is 1200 pixels wide by 600 high. You can trim off either side of that image to make is narrower so it will not force the page so wide. If you set the browser's background to the color of the the photo's background, the page background to none and make that photo narrower that will make it fit better.
Since Apple suggests that a page be 980 for iPhone compatibility trim 110 pixels off the left and right edges of the photo and make sure the photo is placed at the top of the page (remove the navbar and set the header to zero in the Inspector/Page/Layout jpane).

  • Image size or format problem

I'm trying to dynamically load an image from the server. jpg,
png, and gif all work fine except when i tried to upload a
3024x2303 7.5megs PNG image. The loadClip listener goes through all
the events and doesn't spit out an error. onLoadInit is called but
this where the problem is: the image is not displayed and the
    target_mc dimensions are 0.
I've already increased the memory_limit setting in php to
more than enough ;) but maybe i need to increase it even more.
First though, i was wondering if anyone knew of an image size
limitation set in flash? My code is very rudimentary for loadClip,
just picked it out from the livedocs.

2880x2880 is the max. If you want bigger you'll need to chop
    up, and load
    pieces.

  • What is the best image size format for imovie iOS

I want to create a few black images with white letters as title slides and use them with some of my videos I am creating using imovie with my new ipad3.
What is the best image size?
    thanks!
    Jeremy

It all depends on what you want to do with the images.
If you don't want to do any moves on the images then make them the exact size of the video.
The iPad 3 edits in full HD, 1920 x 1080.
If you want to do small moves, then make is larger.
But keep the 1920 x 1080 dimensions otherwise iMovie just chops the image to that ratio.
    good luck

  • Image Size Problems when printing on Epson printers

    Hello all,
Here's what I have- I am running Photoshop CS 5.1 on a new Mac Mini, using OS 10.6. I am up to date on all software updates for both the Mac OS and Adobe.
As of two weeks ago, whenver I send an image to print on my Epson 4900 or Epson 4880 it prints much smaller than the intended size. For instance, I have an 11x17 piece of paper and it is printing an image that is roughly 6x9in, even though my image size is really 10x16. I know that I have the correct paper size. I even tried creating a custom paper size to no avail.
After few weeks of trying to figure out the problem, I decided to install a copy of CS4 on the machine. CS4 is working properly and I have not had any resizing issues......That is until today....Now, my Epson 4880 is having the same problem printing as when I was going through CS5.1
I trashed the preferences.....That didnt work either.
    Any thoughts?

    As of two weeks ago...
    What happened two weeks ago...?
