Inbox Messages disappearing

Hi there, folks. I have 3 email accounts I use with my Mac Mail (OS 10.4.8). Two are IMAP and one is a .Mac. I've been using Mac Mail for a good year or so without problems. Recently, messages have been disappearing from my Inboxes. Usually leaving the most recent 20 or so messages intact. The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found. My host for the two IMAP accounts have no quota limits. The .Mac account seems to be fine (no messages disappearing). I've cleaned out the trash and any large attachments. But it is still doing this. Any thoughts? It's very frustrating. I'd really appreciate any insight on this issue.

Do you have another computer (either Mac or Windoze) available to you, that you can use to access the affected imap accounts? If so, are all messages displayed there? How about webmail access? If so, same question?
Are any of these messages in a different folder, that you need to click on the right-pointing triangles next to the gray globes associated with the affected accounts, to make them downward-pointing triangles, thereby expanding the accounts to show all their mail folders? Or are all these messages in the inbox? IF some of these "missing" messages are in a separate folder, they won't show up in the main inbox in Mail.app.
If you ascertain that all messages are intact in the inbox when accessed from another platform or by a different venue, and it is a case of them not being visible on this particular Mac in Mail.app, you might first try reapplying the 10.4.9 intel or PPC combo update. (I'm assuming you're at 10.4.9. Google "10.4.9 PPC combo update" or "10.4.9 intel combo update"). Why? It has been reported by a number of people over in the ichat forum that reapplying a combo update, even though the user was already at that OS minor rev level, cured their iChat problems by so doing. I suggested the combo update approach to a guy with an AddressBook problem once, and although he had actually fixed his AddressBook problem by some other means, he did say that some other annoyances that he had been experiencing went away and that the combo update seemed to make his computer run a little bit better, so you really don't have anything to lose by doing so, except maybe 15 mins of your time. I would also recommend running software update when done, just to make sure that reapplying the combo update didn't walk on any later-issued security patches. And, of course, run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before doing the combo update.
If no joy from doing all that, at that point, I would be really tempted to delete the affected imap accounts from Mail > Preferences > Accounts. You'll get splash screens during the account deletion process reassuring you that only the local junk on your Mac is the only thing getting deleted, and the actual imap accounts, and the messages stored on the remote imap servers, will be unharmed. (This is quite different from the splash screen you get when deleting pop accounts that says you are about to delete all your saved mail). Bottom line -- read the splash screen carefully, if any doubt -- cancel out and don't delete the account -- request further guidance in this forum.
If you were to do this, be sure to write down each account's settings (imap/smtp server names, ports, SSL checkboxes statuses, authentication methods, etc.) to facilitate an easy reconstruction of the mail accounts in Mail.app.
And, after deleting the affected accounts, quit Mail.app, then relaunch it and recreate those accounts.

My inbox messages disappear without warning.

Where are the messages coming from?
The Messages app on the iPhone covers both messages to and from other iOS devices (Iphone, iPod Touch & iPad) over wi-fi, as well as the SMS/MMS messaging with most any cell phone. SMS/MMS messages cannot be received by the Messages app on an iPad or the iPod Touch.

  • Mail inbox messages disappear with gmail IMAP

I've just set up an IMAP connection to my gmail account in Mail and after reading a message in my inbox, the message disappears from my inbox and I can only find the email in All Mail.
Looking in gmail, the gmail inbox still contains all of the emails that should be in it, so I know that gmail isn't filtering or archiving read emails. Additionally, on my phone my inbox shows properly so I know that my problem lies with Mail itself.
I have deleted all my rules from Mail, so I know no filtering is going on at the Mail level either.
If anybody could please help me out...
    Thanks,
    Shawn

iPhone receives and shows incomeing mail for this box fine.
It happened upon resetting incoming SSL port per instructions from Web email Server firm.
This complaint in reported around the mac sites from Mail at least v. 2.5 on. Isn't anyone at Apple working on the problem??

  • Apple Mail inbox message disappear after a week

I have a brand new iMac running 10.8.2.  I am using the Apple Mail program to view emails from an AT&T DSL account.
The emails just disappear after a certian time and I can not find any setting for this in preferences (note this is not deleted e-mail, but rather all email in my inbox)  As of 4/3, the oldest email is dated 3/27 in my inbox.
The emails are on the AT&T server still, and my old iMac is also receiving them and not removing them.
How do I change this please?

    Quit Mail.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in.

  • Inbox Messages Disappear after Rebuild

My Inbox went blank after doing a Rebuild on that box. I checked under Users>Myname>Library>Mail and the Inbox was full of messages. Why can't I see them now? Any suggestions for a fix? Using 10.5.1 on a new iMac.

I came here looking for an answer to the same question.
I have a client that recently migrated from a Macbook Pro running 10.4.11 to an iMac running 10.5.1.
Things seemed OK for a week, but Mail started behaving funny: lots of duplicate messages, old messages showing up in the Inbox (from 2005, 2006), old spam, etc.
I went to remove the Envelope Index file, and Mail went to "re-import" the messages on the next startup. It stayed stuck on 0 of 45000 (estimate) and then finally crashed.
I put the Envelope Index file back in, and started again. Kept getting the exclamation point on the Inbox, with a message indicating that the mailbox was locked on the server side (strange, since this is the only machine accessing it).
I decided to try a Rebuild of the Inbox file.
    Everything vanished.
I went into the Inbox mail file, and saw there was a folder called "Messages" and another called "Messages-1".
"Messages" only had 4 messages in it - the 4 that downloaded after the Rebuild function wiped everything. "Messages-1" had about 3000+ messages in it, which seemed to appear OK when I looked at the dates.
However, after I reimported the messages using the import feature in Mail, I had a few from today, and the rest were from October 24th and before. None were dated in the last 2 months (or few days for that matter).
I've been on hold with Support for over an Hour, and I guess I'm going to give up. This is pretty bad though. I can piece back most of the messages from the previous migration, and pull from the last 2 weeks on the server, but I can't believe I witnessed the Messages folder get wiped in front of my eyes (the second time).

  • I just opened my mail on icloud and all messages disappeared from the last year! I have one email left in my inbox which is the most recent. I moved to icloud 2 weeks ago and it has been working fine until now. How can I retrieve old messages? Thank you.

I guess you could try but I don't believe Apple can help with activation lock issues.  They may, however, be able to determine if the Apple ID belongs to one of you and reset the password for you if you can prove your identity.
You might want to try calling Apple by going to https://expresslane.apple.com; click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'.  In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'.  Perhaps they can help determine if it's your ID and reset the password for you (and they probably have more expertise in doing this than the Apple store).

  • Apple Mail Inbox - messages keep disappearing!

I've been searching and trying various tips from other similar discussions. Here's the deal...I switched from Entourage to Apple Mail about a year ago and imported all of my email folders and messages into Mail. Everything was setup via Gmail POP and I switched to IMAP a few months ago. Realizing that with IMAP I could now move all of my folders from "On My Mac" to "MyName" so that my folders and ALL emails would be visible in Gmail and on my iPhone, I made the move last week. Here's where the issues began.
Each time I moved a folder, everything EXCEPT notes in my Inbox would disappear until the folder was finished moving over. I got used to that and figured it was just Mail being lazy/tired/what have you. I finished moving all of my folders and emails around on Thursday and have STILL been having the Inbox issue. I've tried rebuilding my Inbox, but it only ever seems to work if I select all Mailboxes (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash & Junk) and even then it only works sometimes. I can still see my inbox messages in Gmail and my iPhone, so thankfully they aren't lost.
I have tried repairing permissions, moving library/cache/mail and library/mail/envelope index to my desktop and rebooting. But what do I do after that? I have a feeling it may also be tied to my rules and have deleted both rules plists. Am I supposed to move the folder and files from desktop back to library after rebooting or do I have to reset my entire mail and my 100s of thousands of message??

Have you tried changing the location of the mail server into your iPhone using your Yahoo ! account?

So is your "Messages" or "SMS" icon missing? Try to reset the device by removing the battery for 30 seconds. Also try to reset the theme by going into Options | Theme, hitting the menu button, and choosing Reset Theme Defaults.

  • Repaired inbox folder and messages disappeared

Some inbox messages were corrupted so I clicked "repair folder". All messages prior to the one highlighted went away. Dropped from 1500+ messages to 46. Using POP3 and messages are still on server. Have successfully repaired folder many times. How did this happen? Can I recover the missing messages? Thank you.

your right, synchronization and storage is an IMAP only thing.
If your mail is still in your web mail, you can force a full download of POP mail by deleting the popstate.dat file from the accounts folder in your profile.
Help menu (alt+H) > Troubleshooting information and click the open folder button.
CLose Thunderbird, open the mail folder in explorer window that opened and then the folder names for the accounts server. Delete popstate.dat and restart Thunderbird. Delete the wrong one and you get more mail that you bargained for, nothing else.
Now to the cause here. I have no definitive answers. It is generic and full of assumptions. Common causes are the quarantining of the mail file by the anti virus program, or an attempt by such a program to excise one email from the file and not updating the index. Concurrency issues, again often involving anti virus trying to scan the file while is is being written by thunderbird. My solution is to exclude the Thunderbird profile folder and it's children from "on access" scanning, leaving scanning to the weekly or monthly scan and ensuring that all folders are compacted and IMAP accounts expunged before that scan, to ensure that email marked as deleted has actually been removed from the file before it is scanned.

  • Yosemite: Mail folders moved and messages disappear

OS X 10.10.1 on a Mac Mini 2.6 GHz, 8gb RAM, 1tb HD, Gmail setup as IMAP in Mail, personal mail folders sorted alphabetically
Intermittently while moving Inbox messages to personal folders, or opening messages in personal folders, the folders will drop to the bottom of the folder list and messages within the folders will disappear. Rebuilding the mailbox will usually make the messages appear, however the personal folders have to be moved back to their original positions. These instances have occurred frequently enough to be annoying and time wasting. Please advise. Thanks.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • In Thunderbird, the text of received messages disappeared, how to revert it?

We noted that the text (and attachs) of our received messages disappeared of messages before March, 2014.
What could be happened? And how to see again the text (and attachs)?
    Thanks

Look in your anti virus program in it's logs etc for a file called inbox being deleted or quarantined for some reason. I would suggest looking around the date the problem manifested itself.

  • MobileMe/IMAP: locally stored messages disappeared

    Hi,
with the current service window of MobileMe, I cannot access my e-mails via the web interface. Fair enough, I thought, I was looking for a message I sent yesterday, and this will surely be accessible through Mail or at least in my local IMAP directory. To my great horror, Mail does not show the folders, and in the library, the MobileMe directory is empty for all but the inbox files! All the folders are gone.
I opened TimeMachine, and double-checked they used to be there. (Bad for me: the last backup was from before I sent the message.)
Can anybody explain how locally stored IMAP folders and messages can suddenly disappear without warning?
    Thanks,
    Leo

Same problem here today! Not good at all, i checked the settings of the account and even if i told mail to keep a local copy, all the messages disappeared.
The thing doesn't affect the iphone mail luckily so i think that is a mail bug somewhere...

  • Message disappearing? It won't if you double-click...

I have been single-clicking on my emails as I always did
with BTYahoo and wondering why my Inbox disappears to
be replaced by the message. Then the message disappears
again when I click on 'Inbox'.
I have not been able to have several messages open at once
on different tabs. It has been incredibly frustrating.
Here is the answer: you have to double-click on the message,
then it opens up in its own tab. You can read it and leave it
open and come back to it when you are ready instead of not
knowing where it is. That is the big thing that is different
about the new Mail and nobody has been telling us - I had to
    trawl through the Help pages.
The nearest I found was this one:
    https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/email-tabs-not-visible/m-p/1369185#M26429
but even then people were telling the original poster that they
had to do all sorts of complicated stuff . . . you don't, you just
have to double-click your messages instead of single-clicking
them like you used to with the Yahoo mail.

I would like to create a file that stores my documents and has a password on it so that if I lend my laptop to someone, they can't access my documents. I went into utilities and followed his instructions to do that. I created it on my desktop and its a .dmg extension

  • Verizon WebMail Email Messages Disappearing

I use the MyVerizon 2.0 webmail application to view my email messages remotely.  I have reported that a few weeks ago my email messages have been disappearing from my inbox.  Today, the messages disappeared again from my inbox.  My email client at home is Windows Live Mail.  I have in the options to leave a copy on the server checked so that the messages do not get wiped out.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Any solution out there?  I suspect a problem with the Verizon Webmail application since this did not happen before it was updated.  Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It appears that after changing my password, that the emails have remained on the server and are viewable using webmail so far.  I now suspect that some POP3 client was downloading them somehow.  That is the only conclusion I can come to at this point.
