Increasing Wireless Bandwidth

Hi,
I'm looking to combine three 54Mbps Wireless radios to increase wireless bandwidth, load balancing and redundancy. My intention was to create an etherchannel using the connected Cisco 2960 switch ports but I have read this is not a recommended solution. Could anyone provide details of a recommended solution and the required devices? Thanks in advance for your help.

If you're in a L2 scenario with lots of VLANs, then you can setup your three bridges and push different VLANs over different bridges - it's crude but it works. Obviously you'll need to run spanning tree!
If you want to do this properly though, you should be using 2.4GHz & 5GHz, not just one or the other.
Failing that, you could use other more dedicated equipment like Laser Links, or go to a manufacturer that specialises in high-capacity / high-reliability bridge links, as this kind of thing isn't really on Cisco's current portfolio.

  • Etherchannel, two links, but no increase in bandwidth

    Hi,
We have a problem with an EtherChannel that we have between us and a content provider.
We have two 1Gb links in the Etherchannel but we can't seem to get the total bandwidth above 1Gb.
I have created the same situation in a lab environment.  Same thing  there, I cannot get the total bandwidth to more than 10Mbps ( I  statically set the speed of the physical interfaces/members to 10Mbps  individually).
Does anyone have any idea if there is some configuration parameter that  we missed that is limiting the total bandwith of the Etherchannel to the  same as the speed of the individual interfaces, rather than the  combined bandwidth?  A big benefit about implementing an Etherchannel is  the increased bandwidth, and we kind of miss out on that.
Below is some of the configuration of the lab.
    Two Catalyst 3560 running 12.2(50)SE3
Switch A, and respectively on B
    interface Port-channel47
      switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
      switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,28,900
      switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/15
      description eth-cha1
      switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
      switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,28,900
      switchport mode trunk
      speed 10
      channel-group 47 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/16
      description eth-cha2
      switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
      switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,28,900
      switchport mode trunk
      speed 10
      channel-group 47 mode on
    port-channel load-balance src-dst-ip
I have tried different load balancing parameters, and different channel-group x modes but it does not make a difference.
    Thanks

    Update,
We have not been able to solve the issue as of yet.
We have done some serious testing the last few days to solve the problem.  We have noticed that in an etherchannel where we use trunks we may increase the bandwidth by changing it to
    port-channel load-balancing src-dst-mac
However, on the link that we have to the content provider we use a routed interface for the port-channel and on this connection we cannot go above the total of 1Gb (limit for one of the physical links).
    The config is:
    interface Port-channel10
    no switchport
    ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
    ip pim sparse-mode
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/1
    no switchport
    no ip address
    no cdp enable
    channel-group 10 mode active
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/2
    no switchport
    no ip address
    no cdp enable
    channel-group 10 mode active
    port-channel load-balance src-dst-mac
Any ideas to what is going wrong?
Greatful for any tips / ideas

As the other posters have already noted, single flows only use one link of an Etherchannel.  However, even when using multiple flows and even the "ideal" hashing algorithm, it's also possible two flows will hash to the same link.  I.e. it's not a given that multiple flows will use all the possible aggregate bandwidth.
On dual Etherchannel, for example, since the odds are 50/50 which link a flow will hash to, I assume my effective aggregate bandwidth at about 150% not 200%.  For three link Etherchannel, I expect about 200% not 300%, etc.  (NB: also note for odd [and non-binary?] number of links, hashing isn't even across links.)

  • Increasing wireless security access to TC

    Hi again,
My TC is currently on WPA/WPA2 Personal with 8 characters password. How can I increase wireless security - like adding MAC (or better way of doing it)? I am not expert in this so please advice step by step.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Discussions forums,
Have you tried setting the workgroup name in AirPort Utility? Select Manual Setup, then navigate to Disks > File Sharing and fill in the workgroup name of the XP machine. Make sure it's the exact name you've entered in your network settings of the XP laptop. Then you need to add the TC's IP to the list of trusted networks/zones in any firewalls you have installed on your XP machine. I had to add 10.0.1.1 to my list of trusted networks in my McAfee firewall for my machine to recognize devices connected to my TC (including other computers).
Second, you need to install Bonjour for Windows in order to install the printer on your XP laptop.
Also, if you would rather not go through the workgroup setup, there is a program called AirPort Base Station Agent (included in AirPort Utility for Windows) that loads into your taskbar and mounts and maps the TC's HDD automatically for you.

  • Significant Increase in Bandwidth

    Hi there
This is probably not a big problem for most other people in the world, but bandwidth/traffic is a big deal to us as we pay for every MB we use. Since we've implemented JavaMail and got our clients to switch from Outlook they say that they have had a huge increase in the amount of bandwidth used. Sometimes 4 to 5 times the previous total traffic.
Is it possible that the way JavaMail downloads the emails from the server (POP) could be any different that e.g. Outlook? I am fairly sure we do not download the same message more than once.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Marius

Are you sure Outlook was using POP and not some Microsoft proprietary protocol?
There aren't a lot of choices with the POP3 protocol. JavaMail will download the
headers first if you only access the header information, and then will download
the entire message (headers and body) if you access the message content.
If you know you're going to access all the content you can avoid the first download
of just the headers, but still that shouldn't be a significant impact on bandwidth.

  • QOs detoriation with increase in bandwidth utilisation

we are the MPLS service provider providing MPLS services in India.we notice that Voice quality detoriates as soon as the bandwdith utilisation of the customer links increase more than 60% of link bandwdith particularly with FTP. we have implemented QOS properly. i am told that qos is ineffective if bandwdith utilisation increases more than 60% of link bandwdith. customer should be adviced to increase the bandwdith. Is it true? please help

    Hi
AFAIK if u configure strict priority to your voice traffic (i.e.,LLQ for your voice)it shuldnt affect your voice traffic at all regardless to your bandwidth utilsation since it reserves a particular amount of B/W for your voip traffic which again can be configured manually.
The same you can do under your policy map configurations, hope you are having LLQ in place for your voice otherwise would suggest to look onto that and try out the same.
And when theres no congestion thts your h/w queue is ample enough to serve your traffic the software queues will be bypassed (which are manually configured) and if theres some congestion then your S/W queues kicksin.
so in a ideal customer network with voip and other traffic i would go with llq for voip and cbwfq for other traffic based on the traffic patterns using the DSCP,IP Prec values..
to be more precise you can go for LFI also to slice your packets so that your voip packets dont get backlogged..

  • WRT54GS2 as second router to increase wireless range

    All-
I have a primary Linksys router, WRT110 that works great. I am trying to set up a WRT54GS2 as a downstairs wireless to increase range.  I have a CAT5 running from the WRT110 to the WRT54GS2 and is connected from LAN to LAN and have them configured as follows:
    Primary WRT110:
    I.P: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Start I.P: 10 to 50
    DHCP enabled
    Wireless mode : mixed
    Band: Auto 20/40mz
    WPA2 security
    =================
    WRT54GS2is configured as follows:
    I.P: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    DHCP Disabled
    Advanced Routing / NAT:Enabled
    Wireless network = Mixed
    Channel = 6 = 2.437mz
    ============
On both routers I have the same SSID and same security key.
On the Status page of the WRT54GS2 I have the following:
    Login Type: DHCP
I.P and Subnet Mask are blank.
Any ideas where I erred? I've read quite a few posts relating to this and can't seem to find the problem.
    Thanks!

Is the SSID broadcast enabled on both?
Is the device "within 15 feet" connected to the first router or second router? What happens if you switch off the wireless on that computer and then switch it on again?
What happens if you disable the wireless on the first router completely? (Wireless network mode to Off). Can you see the signal of the second router?
You could also use a network sniffer like Netstumbler http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ to scan for networks. It should show you the signals of both access points.
What are your full and exact Wireless and Wireless Security settings on both routers?

  • Increasing wireless range by upgrading airport card?

I have had my powerbook G4 1.5 GHz for a little over 3 years and its been great for me except for its wireless range is somewhat lacking. When i have little or very limited connectivity people next to me with the new mac books have full reception. Now i know that their computers have new hardware and possibly better antennas but i was wondering if there was any way to increase the range of my powerbook by upgrading some of the internal hardware. I have seen other posts and people have shown products that are external but i feel that would be a last resort since they have a better chance of being broken. Is there any way to increase the reception by installing a new airport card or better antenna?

Hi, El M. Since the day it was new, my son's Aluminum Powerbook with Airport Extreme card has had less than 1/3 the range of my Titanium Powerbook with original Airport card — and the Tibook's range isn't great. If you really want better range, a third-party CardBus wireless adapter is the way to go. Some can use optional auxiliary antennas to extend their range even more, but the card alone will give you a dramatic improvement.

  • Increase wireless strength

  • Wireless bandwidth limit and billing system

    Hello ,
We want to rent the internet access service to the houses which are provided to employees. That's why we need bandwidth limit and billing system solution. There will be also a guest users in the network. Could you give me an idea , is it possible to do that with Cisco wireless LAN controller devices , if it is possible how can it be done ?
    Kind Regards...

The WLC has no capabilities to either connect to a billing system or limit bandwidth to users depending on the users role. NAC Guest Server can do that for you, but it is pretty pricey. There are other 3rd party utilities out there that does HotSpot billing and bandwidth throttling. Wireless traffic from the WLC will flow into these server's or PC's depending on what you load the software on.
Just Google Hotspot or wireless billing:

  • Limitting wireless bandwidth

Hi, I own the WRT54G V5 router and everything works fine, but I have one problem. I have one wireless laptop connected to it and one desktop hard wired to it. I mainly use the desktop while my brother uses the laptop.
I've found that whenever he downloads large files, he steals nearly all the bandwidth and I'm stuck with horrible ping rates and slow response times. So, my question is, is there anyway to split the bandwidth 50/50 between the wireless and the hard wired aspect of the router (or maybe 60/40 )?
    Thanks

Yes, there is.  Your router supports QOS (Quality of Service).  So you can give your computer the same, or a "higher priority" than his.
Enter your router setup pages, and go to the "Applications & Gaming" tab, "QOS" subtab.
You may need to play around with this until you get it set right.
In your router, by default, the wired ports have a "Low" priority, so that alone may be your problem.  Set the "Ethernet port priority" to give yourself to a higher priority, and see if that works.
If that is not satisfactory, then, in this same area, you can set the "Device priority" to give you priority based on your MAC address.  If you do this, you may also need to enter your brother's MAC address and give him a lower priority.
Please let your brother know why you are doing this, so he does not write us next week about his wireless suddenly slowing down!

  • Increasing Wireless reception

I use my computer at school for lectures, but am unable to get a consistent network connection. Instead, the connection goes in and out, effectively making the connection useless for me. Others around me with newer Mac laptop models do not have this problem and so I am assuming that the wireless reception is not as strong on my older model.
And so, does anyone know of a way to increase my reception? Is there a product I should buy that you would reccomend? Do I just need a new wireless card?
    Thank you.

Are you using a QuickTek product? Wondering which one to buy....I'm looking for an antenna for my PB G4. Range at my home is terrible. Linksys router just isn't cutting it.

  • Wired / Wireless Bandwidth Seems Limited. Why?

    Hi folks,
Apologies if this has been asked already, but I flipped through the forum & found nothing, and the search appears to be offline.
I have many items plugged into my AEBS, but have noticed the bandwidth (even wired).... lacking.
    A concrete scenario:
    Slingbox wired=> AEBS wireless(pure n)=> *Macbook Air*
I cannot get more than about 182kbps in the stream. I've even tried a wired connection at the other end so it was entirely wired.
    Troubleshooting I've done:
    1. Called Sling and they tried streaming remotely; same result
    2. Plugged a PC in and did it all wired... same result
    3. Reset the Slingbox to factory... same result
    4. Reset the AEBS firmware to factory... same result
So far, most of what I've done points to the AEBS having issues with pushing out data at reasonably fast speeds.
Any recommendations would be very much appreciated!!
    Thank you,
    Rob.

    hi,
i get 300 as speed if the devices are in good range of the airport extreme. My imac only reports 270.
I have 1 AE and 3 Airport Express.
The Airport Extreme and 2 of the A.Express run at 5 GHz, and the one A.Express at 2.4.
That said I have tested and tested, and the only differentiation I saw was when the Airport Express, for example were at the edge of the extreme, and then the speed falls off. So my Macs all report 300 or 270 with any given device.

  • How to increase wireless speeds

    Hi,
yesterday we got 50/25 FIOS. So far we have changed the router to n only mode and changed the security settings to WPA2 but the best speed i can get is 38Mb. I also looked at my N adapter and the transmission speeds is only 65Mb when its cabable of 150Mb. Is there anythign else i can do to get a much faster speed. Ive seen people with wireless say that they have got 50+ Mb on the 50/25 plan
    Thanks!

What wireless adapter is installed in your computer, or what devices are you seeing the 65Mbps link speed on? Also, what revision of the MI424WR router do you have?

  • Late 2008 MBP - Wireless bandwidth

I can't find if my MBP wireless runs on 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
    I have a late model 2008.
    Thanks!!

If you are on line you can hold the option key and click on the airport menulet in the upper right corner of your screen. Here you should see your GHz.
Also if you look under -> (option key) System Profiler-> Network-> Airport
Here you will see your interface - Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n
n is the latest protocol which supports 5GHz.
You can change your options/ router set up... Applications/Utilities/AirportUtility.app

  • Limit guest wireless bandwidth

Can I setup my airport extreme to limit the guest wifi zone bandwidth?

    Sorry, but no.
Since enabling the Guest Network splits the bandwidth between the Main and Guest Networrks, it might be a good idea to only enable the Guest Network when you really have "guests".
