InDesign CS4 memory problems

I have had memory problems with InDesign CS4 (and also with Photoshop CS4) for about a year now. If my file has a lot of pictures (100+) at some stage I get error message "Out of memory" . In the beginning it just have problems with redraw pictures (half of picture stays black), but also export to pdf is halted by same message and printing to file also. No problems in the beginning of large files or with files with text only. At one point InD just has enough and starts to behave like a ... Only solution is to export InD CS4 file as INX and continue to work in CS3 (but it takes a long time to match the text flow because textengine works differently). It's not monitor, because I have changed monitor during this year (from LaCie 22 blue IV to EIZO 27"). It seems that it's not video (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX, 512 MB) also, because everything functions normally with CS3. I know, that it's not a proper video card for my work, but one likes to play Bioshock sometimes... Something strange happens with Photoshop CS4 also when I work for a long time without shutting down the program. After about editing 60+ pictures Photoshop CS4 begins to slow down (specially with using clone tool).up to impossible to work. You just have to wait while the cursor is dragging itself to right place an picture is redrawing itself. Seems like memory cannot empty itself and gets overloaded when working with CS4. No problems with Photoshop CS3. One cannot notice anything with small files. I can work with CS3 but there are features I would like to use in CS4.
Have anyone experienced anything similar?
Claudius
Win XP SP3
4GB RAM
video NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB with latest drivers
CS4 and CS3

Having exactly the same here. 16 Gb of ram in an 8 core 64 bits Vista system. Absolutely no infections on my system. Having great troubles getting my work ouputted.
I'm making an overview with 50 cards with pictures in them and bevels on the edges, dropshadows. It might be heavy but it is a normal question from my client.
I don't care if transparency is difficult for Adobe to handle. They shouldn't make it public if it is not properly tested. I am now so far as to make the composition in photoshop ( if that works)
What I thought was the problem is that I originaly placed indesign files in frames. But there is a great script out there on www.automatication.com to convert that in  editable object again. Works great so check that out. But this didn't solve my problem. The effects used in these items are the memory consummers and Adobe is not freeing the memory properly.
Advise to Adobe: check also to dropshadows feature because this is not scaling up or down with the rest of the effect.
I'm am writing a realtime 3D renderengine here, if CS5 is not working fine, I might digg in to this one as well, getting a bit tired of waiting for properly working software.

  • Indesign cc memory problems ...

I was previously using Indesign CS6 with no memory problems.  I uninstalled CS6 and installed CC when two days after it had become available.  I have installed all updates to indesign.  I have this installed on two systems.
    1) Laptop:  Windows 7 64-bit, 4Mb RAM, 1.65 GHz
    2) Desktop: Windows 7 64-bit, 6Mb RAM, quad core 2.0 GHz
This same issue is occuring on both systems, open indesign 64-bit, and a small document (5 pages of text) and the system memory is consumed until nothing is left.  On the laptop I run both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions indesign that were installed, same issues.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, and is there a work around?

Why would saving in compatibility modes make a difference???
It's not recommended to open older files Directly in a newer verison. The workflow for migrating older files to a newer version has always been to export the file from Old Indesign as an IDML file and then open that in the New InDesign.
You really should read the Help Files.
Save an InDesign Markup (IDML) document
In some cases you may want to save an InDesign in interchange markup format. It’s especially useful to save in this format when you open a QuarkXPress or PageMaker publication in InDesign, when you open a document created in a previous version of InDesign, or when you’re experiencing problems with your document, such as not being able to delete color swatches.
Choose File > Save (CS6) or File > Export (CS5).
From the Save As Type (Windows) or Format (Mac OS) menu, choose InDesign Markup (IDML).
    Click Save.
You can open the saved IDML file in InDesign CS5 and InDesign CS4 but not in any previous version of InDesign.
For information on using IDML for development purposes, see www.adobe.com/go/learn_id_indesignmarkup_cs4_en.

  • Adobe InDesign CS4 opening problem

    Hi,
I have problem of opening Adobe InDesign CS4.
At the following images you can see the error messages that comes one after the other.
    I really need your help......
Thank you so much in advance,

    No....
but thank you ssoooo much for your effort.
Now it is just crashing without the error massages
    and the error report is
    AppName: indesign.exe           AppVer: 6.0.4.578  ModName: cooltype.dll

  • InDesign CS4 functioning problems, can you help please?

I have had a problem in Leopard for a while: Once in a while, InDesign 6.4 would no longer open my files with a compatibility message. I tried all sorts of things such as deleting prefs and backup files, but the only fix was to trash the app and copy it back from another disk.
Now I just decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard, and I upgraded InDesign to 6.6 in the row. Unfortunately, memory short, I upgraded the copy I used for reinstalling. Now ID 6.6 quits at launch in Snow Leopard, and on the Leopard partition, it wont recognize my files… I'm stuck for there is no way to downgrade to the older 6.4 version that worked. Can you suggest something to sort me out?
The message in 6.6 says that a serious error has occured and InDesign will quitt, and this while the last initializators are called in the progress window (translation from localized version)

    Hi Peter,
It's nice to know that the old software is still available! My copy is part of CS4, do you think that the individual program should work with the suite serial number and activation key?
To correct my previous post, the version that crashes on my computer is 6.0.6, and 6.0.5 seems ok but sometimes won't open files with error message 14 (file not compatible with ID)
    Thanks!
    Paul

  • InDesign CS4 install problems on a MAC....HELP!!

I have ALL versions of InDesign from 1. through to CS5 except for ID CS4. My client wants me to utilize this for a major project we are doing, so there won't be any problem with up/down saving etc. I am using a Macbook Pro and I have a licensed version of CS4 and for whatever reason I can not get it to load. I tried this more than a year ago before CS5 came out....couldn't even get the trial version to work. I have deleted ALL CS3 and CS5 applications and done an Adobe clean suite sweep. Still it takes the registration number and then after spending all the time to upload it says "license is expired". I've never even heard of a license expiring and would wonder, but this is their multi-license copy that several people are using AND it has said that with any copy I've tried to upload. I tried it with the internet off, of course restarting before each time to have a clean trash bin and fresh start. I've tried every way I can think of and it has cost me a whole day of work! I even crossed my fingers and rubbed my lucky penny....no luck at all! There must be something in there that's keeping it from being able to load. OH, did I tell you I even set up another user and tried it that way?
I'm out of options and would appreciate and advice and help.

    Peter:
I have tried and tried to post on the forums again. Signed in with 2 different names (don't ask!) and still can't get a new topic button. Here is my issue:
I have a large scale file (several) that I'm working with. It is 60" x 210". The file made in ID is fine, but I am having a hard time making a proofing PDF. Tried Distilling, directly from the app (export), and making them into eps and opening them in Acrobat to create a 4 page file. All ways cropped the files.
Do you by chance have a tip??? Please?!!
And I figured out my loading of the application problem. It was so strange and many steps:
    1. Install software
    2. If you get a "licesnse expired" notice the...
    3. Change the date on your computer to Dec. 20, 2008 (it's stated differently in the Adobe info, but the phone support stated this date).
    4. Launch the app or any of the CS apps if you've loaded more.
    5. Go to HELP> Deactivate>Erase my serial number.
    6. Close the program.
    7. Open each application.
    7. Change the date back to today's date on your computer.
    8. The products should all launch correctly!

  • InDesign CS4 -- editing problem

Working on a publication in CS4, been in it before, worked in it before, it worked before....but when i click on the Edit, it says theres an error and shuts down on me.  Anyone else have anything similar.  It just started this yesterday, been working in this program for 6 weeks.

That's not a good sign when more than one file develops the problem -- it usually indicates an application-level or system-level issue, and it means the potential for losing you work is much higher.
The least painful thing you can do that might fix strangeness at the application level is replace your preferences. Close InDesign and relaunch, then immediately hold down the key combination for your OS. On Mac that's Control + Cmd + Opt + Shift, on Windows Ctrl + Alt + Shift, and say yes when asked if you want to replace the preferences. If ID starts without asking, you weren't fast enough on the keyboard.
Keep in mind that resetting prefs this way will remove any customizing you've done, so you might to save all of your presets from the "Define" dialogs before you do this so they can be reloaded, and if you have any default styles or swatches you've added, save a blank document that you can use to reload them. If you prefer to back up the prefs before replacing, search for InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData, both of which are normally hidden files, and rename them before restarting ID.

  • InDesign CS4 Licensing Problem.

I've owned Creative Suite 4 since 2008. I just installed Mavericks OS and now when I try to open Indesign it says: "Licensing for this product has stopped working. Error Code: 5. What gives? All the other programs in CS work. Should I just try reinstalling?

Upgrading an operating system is a total crapshoot and CS4 is unsupported
under Mavericks. My advice is to try uninstall and reinstall. If that
doesn't work, then do a clean install of the operating system keeping mind
that you will be on your own with CS4.

  • Bridge CS4 memory problems

I am repeatedly receiving a "Bridge is running low on memory, it is recommended you restart Bridge" message when using the loop to view CR2 files from a Canon 5D Mk2. Bridge CS4 (3.0.0.464), MacBook Pro 2.5ghz duo, 4 GB ram, OSX 10.5.5. Anyone have any advice?

I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help. Try it anyway, though.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

Many of us have this problem!

InDesign CS4 is also hanging for me, with the spinning beach ball (requiring a force quit) and the same kind of console message. It seems to be related to a particular file. The same problem occurs on two different Macs — one is Intel and one is PowerPC G5.
I've installed the 6.0.2 update, but it hasn't fixed it.

  • Problem Re-installing InDesign CS4

When I try to re-install my registered copy of InDesign CS4, I get the message "The installer database is corrupt. Please contact Adobe Customer Serice." It was previously installed with no problem on the same HP laptop, but HP wiped the drive recently when I sent the laptop in for repair. Has anyone gotten this message? I also have InDesign CS4 installed on my desktop computer, but have been assured by Customer Service that I should be able to install the product on another computer with no problem, even though I didn't get a chance to deactivate it when the laptop drive was wiped.

Thanks so much, Peter! You're a lifesaver -- almost, anyway.
I was unaware of the demo downloads of legacy CS products. A great resource!! I followed your directions, got the download, and tried to install InDesign CS4, but received the same message as with my CD: "The installer database is corrupt. Please contact Adobe Customer Service." I have to think it's something wrong (some software conflict??) with my less-than-a-year-old Intel i7 HP laptop, which I just got back from HP repair with the hard drive wiped. (It wouldn't boot. They said it was a memory chip problem and that they couldn't save my data.) To test my theory, I think I'll temporarily install InDesign CS4 from my CD on a friend's computer and see what happens.
Not sure what else to do but watch closely for any future odd behavior from this machine and, in the meantime, get Scribus or maybe PagePlus (never liked Publisher). Bummer! As a retired writer/graphic designer, I can't afford Adobe's latest and greatest, although I use InDesign a great deal -- and can easily make do with Photoshop Elements.
Any suggestions from you or others would be greatly appreciated. I'm certainly not looking forward to recreating a lot of documents in a lower-ranked program.

  • New problem printing from InDesign CS4 in Lion

After having great success with Aisolve's earlier fix on printing from InDesign CS4 after upgrading to Lion, I'm having a new problems after installing the OS X 10.7.2 upgrade last week. When I try to print from  InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to my Lanier 445c/Ricoh C4500 at my workplace I get the following error message:
"Printing Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem."
This seems like a different issue this time, as I'm able to print to my home printers, an HP LasertJet 2600n and an HP Photosmart C4270. I thought it might be a printer driver problems, but I've gone to Lanier's site and they don't have any new printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.7.
I also some research on Adobe's site, and found this message affecting CS1, 2 & 3. I tried the only fix that seemed to apply to me, which was re-naming/deleting the InDesign Deafults and InDesign SavedData files. (I have this problems even when I'm printing a text-only file without any graphics.) This fix didn't work.
I can print to the Lanier/Ricoh from Acrobat 9, and all my non-Adobe software just fine, so my work-around to date has been exporting to PDF and printing from there. My big problem is that I need the "Print Booklet" feature in InDesign for a big job I've got coming up this week. Can't do that from Acrobat. :-(
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    mmsteer,
I think I may be able to help you with this problem, which I was having with CS4 when I first upgraded to Lion, and others were having with CS3. This fix is courtesy of Aisolve on these discussion boards:
Remove the Adobe PDF PPDs from the following folders:
    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/en.lproj,
    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_CN.lproj,
    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Ja.lproj,
    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/ko.lproj,
    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_TW.lproj,
Be sure to go to your system Library, not your user Library.
Also, regarding my current problem, I spoke with an Apple tech person and found that the 10.7.2 upgrade apparently is the culprit, and is incompatible with wireless printing to my Lanier printer. I CAN print connected through USB. That's a work-around for now, but I'll need to contact Lanier about upgrading their driver for OS X 10.7.2.
Aisolve was helping me with this issue, too, and assures me that if I'm able to generate a postscript file (which I was), and able to generate a PDF by distlling it through Adobe Distiller (which I am), then I can safely assume that the problem lies with the hardware, in this case the printer driver. This lines up with what Apple told me.

  • Problem with File Management in InDesign CS4 on Win 7 64-bit Machine

I have Adobe CS4 and just today have encountered a new problem for which I have no solution. When I open InDesign CS4 and choose the Open File menu, and then attempt to change the way the menu diplays items (e.g., Details rather than Small Icons, ec.), the program crashes and I get the "Adobe InDesign CS4 has stopped working" error message. I first encountered this after attempting to open a folder containing InDesign CS file that I need to open and update. In *that* case, the program crashes as soon as I open that folder (from within InDesign). What I have done so far to solve the problem: I tried using Bridge to browse to the problem folder and open the files from there. Bridge does not crash when I open the folder, and I am able to open any file in the folder *from Bridge* into InDesign CS4. However, when I attempt to, for example, export text from the file, while it does not crash when the window (where I get to specify the name of the exported file and change its location [if I wish]) opens, when I attempt to change how the file menu is displayed (cf. my comment above), the program crashes. *However*, if I simply export the file to any folder other than the one the opening of which crashes the program, too, everything is fine. So the problem seems to afflict the one folder, and any attempt, in any folder, to change how the folder's contents are displayed in what amounts to InDesign's use of the Windows file manager function. Any thoughts would be greatly apprecatd.

    Dear Peter,
This is me (PottsJazz) under my (foolishly misplaced) original username (potterjazz) here on Adobe Fora. For various reasons, I decided to do a ground-up reinstallation of Windows 7 64-bit and Adobe CS4 and, initially, the ability to specify the way folders are displayed from within InDesign's own File Manager worked as it should. However, at some point as I went along installing all the software packages I use (Office 2010, Firefox, WordPerfect, some file converters, DVD/CD burning software, iTunes, etc.) the problem reemerged. I think it is probably a glitch with Windows 7 64-bit and one of my programs, but it is definitely not CS4's fault. I just have to create folders, specify folder display styles, etc., from outside CS4 and then maneuver within its programs to the folders and file locations from inside. It's a small price to pay for not spending days reinstalling software and testing testing testing. I'll let you know if I ever get a solution.

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

  • Problem with indesign CS4 program

I've searched for this already but have had no luck finding a fix. My problem is that when I am running indesign CS4 on my laptop I cannot select the master page nor any other pages. Also certain other controls are not functioning like ruler guides, scroll, direct select tool. I have become so frustrated with it. I am running it on my desktop just fine and have no issues at all. My laptop is running Vista home prem. 64 bit. its an intel core 2 duo @ 2.26 Ghz, 4GB ram video card is a Geforce 9800m GTS with 1 GB ram. I have uninstalled all my CS4 (design premium) programs ran adobe clean script reloaded CS4 design prem. and still doesnt work right.
(all the other programs in CS4 design premium work fine except Indesign)
I have already tried running it as admin with no luck.
I am not in preview (I cannot even select preview)
    Please can someone help me???

Alrighty, I finally managed to fix MY problem; I don't know if it will deal with your problem, saltydog.
After losing an entire day to uninstalling, reinstalling, updating, and banging my head against the wall, I stumbled across an unobtrusive little user comment at the bottom of that "Troubleshoot system errors and freezes in InDesign and InCopy (CS4 on Windows)" TechNote.
    User Carolyn Ccc posted this:
"Before tinkering with files, reinstalling, creating new admin accounts, et cetera...  I suggest checking your monitor's "DPI Scaling" setting. The problems seem to have cleared up for me when I re-set to the default (96dpi) rather than the 120dpi I'd selected for the benefit of my aging eyes."
And user Carolyn Ccc was right.  I, too, had my monitor set at 120dpi, since I am slightly visually impaired.  Changing the scaling was a magic bullet fix for all the problems I was having.
I am just hoping that Adobe will kindly develop a patch that will allow InDesign to function correctly at the greater DPI scaling, for people like me who need the larger resolution on their monitor.  It is very tedious to have to switch back and forth every time I want to do a little work in InDesign.
