Install of OS X leopard on Powerbook G4 stalls each time

Hi - I was wondering if anyone out there could help me - I have a Powerbook G4 15", bought around 2005/6. Great machine, never had any problems... until now... I recently did an apple security update, after that the computer never rebooted, always got hung on the spinning cog thing.
I backed-up the hard disk, then did an erase and install with my OS X install DVD. It all works fine for a while and usually gets to the point where it says "around 1hr 11mins to go". Then it never moves on! I have looked at the log and it seems to be working fine, then stops progressing. I have left it going the last 2 nights, but after 8hrs+, no progress.
If it helps, this is what the last few lines of the 295 line log look like:

I am really not that techy, and have never done OS installs on macs before until now. I am loathe to bring it to an apple reseller in Dublin as they will charge $$$s just to look at it!
If anyone can help or has experienced something similar and found a solution, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks very much, Sally.

One possibility is there's a problem with the installer DVD. Carefully clean it. Another is a problem with computer's optical drive mechanism. There are laser lens cleaning discs you can purchase to clean the laser, but if the drive is out of alignment that requires a technician to fix. A third possibility is that the hard drive has defects or is failing. You can do the following to see if it fixes the problem:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Lastly, there may be memory failure. This may be evidenced if the install fails at random points in the process. However, this is not definitive. Unfortunately, there are no truly reliable tests for RAM except to remove a module and then run the machine to see if the problem ceases.

I'm not able to install apple mobile device support on my PC. Each time rollback of instalation

I am having the same problem and have tried everything I can find to get the problem corrected:
    Uninstall/install
    delected directories manually
    device manager driver update
copying working directories from another machine
    cleaned and optimized registry

  • Leopard shuts off my network each time I shut off, restart, or sleep?

After installing Leopard each time I shut off, restart or sleep my computer (auto or manual) it shuts-off my Belkin N Network. I have to manually unplug the wireless modem and replug. I'm running a WPA password protected network. It of course affects other wireless connected computers as well but is defiantly caused by my MacBookPro. Any ideas?

Just as a test, if you turn Airport off on your MBP does the same thing happen?
Once it's off, then turning off your MBP should have no effect.
It this is the case, then you may need to check for firmware updates for the modem.
There have been other instances of this type of behavior with Leopard, especially with 10.5.2.
Most were solved up a firmware update to the modem.

  • I have Safari 7.02 installed. Recently, it started to drop all preferences each time I launch the app. Nothing has been added except McAfee Security.

recently installed McAfee Security for Mac. Free download from AT&T. Since then, Safari has been dropping all preferences each time I launch the app. Is it the new install or something else?

    Step 1
Uninstall the McAfee product by following the instructions on whichever of the pages linked below is applicable:
How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac
How to manually remove VirusScan for Mac 8.6.x using a removal script
How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers
Note that if you have already tried to uninstall the software, you may have to reinstall it in order to finish the job. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different.
Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

Foxfire was working fine until I got a message that updates were ready. After the install each time I open foxfire I see a very brief software install box and then I'm taken to the foxfire welcome screen.
I've tried reinstalling foxfire with the same results

  • Best Lyrics cannot be permanently removed. It must have installed a hidden file that creates the add on each time the computer is booted.

I inadvertently allowed the Best Lyrics add on to be installed for Firefox. It has annoying adds and sometimes links to malicious software. It can be disabled or removed from a session and become non functional after a Firefox restart but each time the computer is booted up it appears again. I assume there must be a file hidden somewhere that re-installs the add on each time the computer is started up. Does any one know how to remove this permanently?

Thanks for the tip. It rurns out that the Bestlyrics was actually added as a program and I was able to get rid of it by uninstalling it from the control panel. (Should of thought of this before). I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and it did find a couple of other PUP items for adware that I deleted. Thanks for the tip.

  • Install problems with Snow Leopard on Powerbook G4

I have an old Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 that I wanted to upgrade to try to get the computer in a more steady state. I bought Snow Leopard but when I try to Install it, it says it can't install because it needs a Intel-based mac. Isn't the G4 an Intel-based Mac? Is there anything I can do. Or is 10.4.11 the farthest I can "update"

Before upgrading to 10.5.8, consider the following:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2275
Also if it is not a steady state now, it most likely won't be when upgrading either.   You should first identify why your machine is having trouble now, until you know for certain there isn't some software driver issue, or hardware issue, you can't upgrade. Perhaps it is best if you identified your current issues, and someone can help you isolate them.

  • Installing mac OS X leopard 10.5 version on my ibook

i'm trying to install mac OS X leopard 10.5 version on my ibook and it's not mounting on the desk top...it tries to read the DVD disc for 2-4 seconds then spits it out.
My Mac machine is described as follows:
    1) machine name: iBook G4
    2) machine model: PowerBook 6,7
    3) running: Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.11
    4) Processor: 1.33 GHZ
    5) PowerPC G4
    6) memory: 1.5 GB
    7) lots of hard drive memory 70 GB
ATA bus model number of DVD drive is:
    MATSHITACD-RW CW-8124
    Revision: DBOD
    Detachable drive: no
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit number: 0
    Socket type: internal
apparently this mac OS X leopard disc is a DVD dual layer format and my drive reads only DVD single layer DVD's....is this in fact true?
I thought i did my due diligence properly before buying this OS X but i guess not.
Your help, ideas and guidance is much appreciated.
    thanks and sincerely,
    g.

Is this the retail version of Mac OS X 10.5 you have?
If so, it should work. If it is a gray Install disc that came with another Mac, it won't work.

  • How do you install mac osx snow leopard 10.6.3

when installing on my pc it says i need intel what do i do to install the snow leopard 10.6.3

To clarify, Mac, Macintosh, are names for machines made by Apple Inc, as well as the operating system that will run on those machines..  If you don't see on the machine either the Apple logo, which has the icon of an Apple with a leaf out its top, and a crescent bite taken out of it,  or the name MacBook followed by Air, Pro, or nothing it won't install Snow Leopard. iBook, Powerbook, PowerMac are all older models that don't support Snow Leopard. Machines by Compaq, Dell, HP, Toshiba, Gateway do not support any Mac OS. It would help to know what you are running.  If you are running a Compaq, Dell, HP, Toshiba, or Gateway, you can get a new Mac Mini for as little as $600, and used or refurbished one for less.  If you need help finding a used or refurbished Mac, we can give you resources for what will run Snow Leopard.

  • What happened to the Leopard on Powerbooks so far thread ???

What happened to the Leopard on Powerbooks so far thread ???
Where did it go ? Even my post is missing.

Well, I can tell you what happened with my neighbors - a complete and utter disaster. It just won't install. I went so far as to reinstall Panther for her (so she can have a working computer) and then try to archive and install. Failed. There's a post about it in the 10.5 forum/installation and set up. It really *****. I don't know what else to do. She's supposed to pay for a license and now, if she doesn't, I'm left holding one with nowhere to put it. Maybe I can just sell it.
This is not cool for Apple. I don't know what they didn't do right, but it ***** and is very disappointing. It's worse because I'm up and running with it on my MacBook so I feel bad for her.

  • Can't boot after installing 10.5.4 on 17" powerbook

I've has Macs since 1987 and have never seen this one. I bought a family pack of 10.5 and it installed perfectly on both my Intell Powerbook and my wife's EMac. yesterday I tried to install it on my mother-in-laws 17" power book. It seemed to be working fine even though I had to ignore some Norton warnings. Even managed to get on the internet. So I shut it off. After a couple of hours decided to try it again just to make sure everything was working before I sent it home with her. The chime sounded, the little propeller thing started turning but after quite a while I got a picture of a circle with a line through it. Kind of like those warning signs like no smoking or no whatever without any words. It stayed like that for 15 minutes until I finally shut it down. Tried to reboot using the Leopard install DVD holding the C key down and got the same thing. Got kind of panic cause my MIL hadn't backed up for awhile. Finally got it to reboot using the 10.3 install discs so decided to just install 10.3 and see if I could back up everything before trying again on 10.5. Two questions:
What is that symbol ie what does it mean? and
What do I do about it?
    Thanks '
    GS

Normally this issue would only appear with Disk Doctor or Speed Disk on any version of Mac OS X. Since you are using anti-virus, then it probably was more likely due to something else that made the directory damaged. See my FAQ* on the directory:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Norton's anti-virus and firewall are actually relatively redundant except in cases where you are trying to avoid becoming a "typhoid mary." If using them, make sure the version they have has been tested with your operating system. ClamXAv is a much better anti-virus application for more current operating systems as it offers less bloat on the operating system.

  • Install Windows XP in Leopard WITHOUT Boot Camp - No More Disk Error

For those of you having problems installing Windows XP in Boot Camp because of the formatting screen never showing up and then the system restarting with the dreaded:
Press any key to boot from CD .....
    Disk Error
    Press any key to restart
I too spent many frustrating hours trying to find a solution that worked. I searched these threads, tried many of the solutions suggested here and elsewhere, including recreating the Windows CD without a specific file, using the FreeDOS boot CD (couldn't ever get it to work, though I understand some people have had success), Reinstalling Leopard and trying again, dancing around the laptop with incense three times counter clockwise while chanting the name of my childhood pet... etc.
I FOUND A NEW SOLUTION!!!! A much easier solution!!!!
For anyone who is having this problem and is planning to run virtualization software.
(Something that let's you run Windows from inside Leopard)
    SKIP BOOT CAMP ALTOGETHER!!!
USE VMware Fusion to install Windows.
I decided to try a different approach entirely and did a completely fresh install of Leopard (not sure if that was necessary or not but with everything else I had been trying I wanted to clean it up anyhow) and then installed the 30 day trial version of Fusion w/ the unlock key VMware emailed me.
I entered my information and Windows product key into Fusion's "Easy Install" Interface, clicked install, and about 30 minutes later I was browsing around in XP.
I HIGHLY recommend this option for anyone having difficulty with the formatting screen not showing up. I have a Bachelors Degree in Information Systems and still spent the better part of 2 days working on this boot camp problem, including numerous hours with the higher tier of apple's tech support. I suspect that those of us having this problem may have an OEM or systembuilder copy of XP... but that is for Apple to deal with - not me, I have better things to do with my time.
If you are planning to run Windows from within Leopard anyhow, just buy Fusion and to **** with the hassle.
You can go to VMware's website and get a 30 day evaluation copy to see if this will work for you before you decide if you want to purchase it, they will email you the unlock key.
Best of luck, hope this saves someone some time!

For what it's worth, I've used the OEM version (copper disk), Select version (bulk license), and an NFR (partner program) version of XP Pro with SP2 and they all worked. On my MacBook Pro's I use boot camp to split the disk in two, reboot using the Windows CD, and pick the partition to format it.
Apple states that you need a full version of Windows, and the OEM versions are slightly different from the commercial versions, but both should work. On my Mac Pro, I created a 3-disk OS X RAID-0, and left the 4th disk alone. I rebooted with the Windows CD and installed Windows to the 4th disk without Bootcamp at all. Once Windows was installed, I used the Leopard disk to install the Bootcamp drivers. The Mac side has no Bootcamp installation but I can still choose between the volumes by holding down the option key at boot time or by setting the startup volume in the OS X Startup disk preference pane.
The solution to use virtualization, unfortunately, will not work for many situations where graphics are involved. Most current major products, such as AutoCAD, 3dsMax, and so forth, will not run properly or at all without specific DirectX 9 or OpenGL support. To date both Parallels and VMWare do not completely support DirectX or OpenGL.

  • Install Disk for Snow Leopard will not boot on an iMac 27in

My Install Disk for Snow Leopard will not boot on my iMac 27in. The Apple Logo is the only thing the user will see. The current OS on the system is 10.6.6. Upon placing the Snow Leopard DVD in the system, the DVD players spins for a few seconds and displays the Apple Logo. Nothing happens after 20 minutes.

Yes, it is ridiculous how it is impossible to install Snow Leopard. I have two Snow Leopard DVDs: one that I purchased for a Macbook soon after it's release (10.6.0), and one that came with my iMac (10.6.4). Both of these boot up my Macbook (running 10.6.7) just fine. My SL 10.6.0 DVD mounts onto my iMac (Lion 10.7.0), but you cannot run the install. I attempted to boot from this DVD and got the infinite white screen and Apple logo, as some have reported above. The other SL 10.6.4 DVD will not even mount in Lion, and will not even show up as a bootable drive when I attempt to select it after holding alt/option on reboot.
I created a bootable external drive from SL 10.6.0, attempted boot, same infinite white screen/apple logo.
I created a bootable external drive from SL 10.6.4 on my macbook. I attempted to boot from this drive, and got the white screen of death, except that this time I actually got the loading symbol underneath the Apple logo. After about a minute of attempting to boot, the Apple logo changed to a circle with a diagonal line through it (the "NO!" sign).
I took my iMac to the genius bar. They inserted SL 10.6.0, which would not boot. Then they determined that my computer had to run 10.6.4 and later. So, they restored an image of SL 10.6.4 onto my partition (not an install from an image, but an image of SL already installed). Hurray! Snow Leopard was successfully shoved onto my iMac!
I then deleted a third partition on my hard drive I did not need anymore, which somehow screwed up my SL partition (even though it said "Will not erase partition SL or Macintosh HD). Now I am back at square one, and I guess I need to take my flippin iMac back to Apple for them to do what I should be able to do.
I like Apple, but sheesh do I hate Lion right now.
