Installed, but stuck at GRUB prompt

After 4 tries, I have managed to install 0.8.  On the reboot, however, I only get as far as a "GRUB>" prompt.
If I put the install disk in the drive, enter "reboot" at the GRUB prompt, and choose the option "Run installed system (/boot on a separate partition)", I am able to get a login prompt and start what appears to be a functional (base) system. But I have clearly missed something in the installation.  I have a /boot/grub/menu.lst file; the noncommented lines are as follows:
timeout 5
default 0
color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
# (1) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux Fallback
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd /kernel26-fallback.img
kernel26.img and kernel26-fallback.img are both in the /boot directory.
What do I need to fix to make the system boot without a rescue disk?

If you indeed have a boot partition on first partition of first drive (hd0,0; sda1) and a root one on third partition of a first drive (sda3), then your grub config seems to be alright. The example above is appropriate if there's no separate /boot partition.
When you're in a GRUB prompt, try entering those root/kernel/initrd lines by hand and check the output.

  • Macbook Air Mid 2011 - Stuck in Grub Prompt

    Hi Archers,
I am trying to install Arch on an Mid 2011 Macbook Air. So far it looks ok, I am following the Wiki and this guide. The bootloader stuff is confusing me a little. I do not want to replace the bootloader from OSx, so I do not use rEFInd, right? I want to use the "Press alt while booting"-method, so does the above guide.
    First problem:
While generating the standalone "boot.efi" file the "-C" option is not recognized.
    grub-mkstandalone -o boot.efi -d usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi -O x86_64-efi -C xz boot/grub/grub.cfg
It complains that -C is not a valid parameter, so I just skipped it.
After deleting the boot partition in OSx and creating the directories and files and copying the boot.efi file I am able to boot from this partition. Problem #2: After booting the partition I am stuck in a Grub prompt. It recognizes HD0 and 1 and after fiddling around with
    ls (hd0)
    ls (hd1)
    ls (hd0,4)
It always complains about an unrecognized partition type.
Any help appreciated. Will I get it working in this state?
Booting from USB and installing the base system worked like a charm, I have a feeling I nearly got it but the bootloader stuff is just plain confusing.
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, I cannot find another guide which uses the OSx Bootloader. I installed rEFInd, reformated /boot with mkfs.ext2, chrooted to the base system and:
    # pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
    # mkdir -p /boot/efi
    # mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
    # modprobe dm-mod
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck --debug
    # mkdir -p /boot/grub/locale
    # cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
The boot partition is recognized in rEFind, if I choose to boot from it Grub is firing up, I can see 2 menu entries (normal and fallback) after choosing the first I get:
    error: no such device: someUID
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
    error: no such partition
    Loading initial ramdiks ...
    unaligned pointer 0x22
Aborted. Press any key to exit
Why won't Grub find the partition?

  • Stuck at grub prompt

Hi, i'm new to solaris and am trying to install it on my pc.
I downloaded bot the a and b dvd images and burned them to disc
I then put the disk in and start up, I see:
    Loading stage2...
    Then I see:
    GNU GRUB version 0.95
[some stuff here about minimal BASH-like line editing]
    grub>
    Now what do I do?
I tried typing install but that was unrecognised.. What do i need to type to start the install process?

The 'a' and 'b' files need to be combined into one ISO file. You can do it like this:
    % for i in sol-10-u4-ga-x86-dvd-iso-?.zip; do unzip -p $i; done > sol-10-u4-ga-x86-dvd.iso
Alternatively, if you've already unzipped the files, you can make one file like this:
    % cat sol-10-u4-ga-x86-dvd-iso-? > sol-10-u4-ga-x86-dvd.iso
Then, burn the resulting ISO and boot off of it.

A cable modem always needs a complete reset whenever you change the device that it is connected to.
To get your Internet signal restored, it will require at least one major step including the reset of your modem and complete network power cycle.
If that is not successful, the second major step is to reset the AirPort Extrreme back to factory defaults and then combine the steps above again.
    Try this first:
Push the reset button on the cable modem (if present) and pull the internal batter (if easily accessible)  then power off the modem
Power off everything else on your network....all devices....order is not important
Wait at least 20 minutes...longer will not hurt
Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots or world icon) on the AirPort Extreme
Re-install the modem battery if it was pulled in the step above
Power up the modem and let it run for 4-5 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for 4-5 minutes
Power up each other network device one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up
Check the network for proper operation

  • Fully installed but now stuck.

    Hi,
I have just installed the Developer version of ColdFusion 9.0.1 on one web site on IIS7/Vista Ultimate. Initially I had a 404 error but I followed the instructions on http://www.codecurry.com/2009/09/installing-coldfusion-on-iis-7.html, now when I try to access the site on http://127.0.0.12/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm I get a 500 - Internal Server Error. I have also added the Script Handler Mappings for .cfc and .cfm as recommended on http://forums.iis.net/t/1005992.aspx.
The core of the problem appears to be that on running wsconfig to try to add a ColdFusion Web Server. However, when I run wsconfig I get the response: "Could not connect to and JRun/ColdFusion servers on host 127.0.0.12." when I choose 127.0.0.12 as the JRun Host.
I have looked in the services and I have four ColdFusion services running: ColdFusion 9 .NET Service, ColdFusion 9 Application Server, ColdFusion 9 Search Server and ColdFusion 9 Solr Service. I am assuming that one of these is the ColdFusion 9 server that the "Could not connect" alert message says must be running (in any case there are no services labelled as ColdFusion that are stopped).
I have tried running both with my firewall stopped and with it running but observing the active ports (and none is blocked). In both cases the problem persists.
Now I have run out of ideas except to say that I can connect to http://127.0.0.12/CFIDE/administrator/test.htm perfectly successfully so this is not a folder permissions issue.
This should have no relevance to ColdFusion but I have IIS successfully running with .NET and PHP already. The only impact I can see is that on installing 9.0.1, there was a recommendation to turn off certain windows features in order to take full advantage of the changes but when I looked at changing those settings, as warning message came up that ASP.NET needed them so I left them in place. As it was only a recommendation, I assume that it should still allow ColdFusion to work (if not as efficiently as possible).
Can anyone either guide me or point me towards relevant online  information to help me towards a functioning ColdFusion installation  because right now it's just dead weight slowing my computer down and I'm  keen to get this going?
    Many thanks.

Well, first, you probably shouldn't be using 127.0.0.12, which almost certainly doesn't resolve to any host at all. Instead, you should be using 127.0.0.1, which is the default loopback address for your own machine. Or, you can use the name "localhost", which is typically already mapped to that IP address in your hosts file. If you've actually used 127.0.0.12 (rather than making a typo here) that is the most likely cause of your problem.
Second, those instructions from Codecurry are no longer entirely relevant. ColdFusion 9.0.1 does not require that you install IIS 6 Compatibility, although I believe it does still require you to install ISAPI.
Third, you can save yourself a lot of headache by not even hooking CF up to IIS on your development workstation, unless you need to use a specific IIS feature during your CF development. CF includes its own web server, and no connector is required for that. You can configure that post-install using the instructions here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/adv_development/config_builtin_webserver/
During the install, I generally recommend that people choose the built-in web server, then configure IIS or Apache after the install, but it's easy enough to go back and turn this on anyway. By default, CF's web server will listen on port 8500 or 8300 depending on whether you chose standalone or full JRun version.
Finally, the CF services don't really slow your computer down unless you're actually using them. If they're just waiting in the background for requests, they have very little effect. I used to turn my CF services on and off depending on whether I needed them, but frankly it's not worth the effort.

  • Acrobat Pro XI installed but wouldn't run.

Acrobat Pro XI recently installed itself alongside X.  When I first opened XI it opened Application Manager and prompted me to accept the terms and conditions--except the terms and conditions were not shown and clicking "ACCEPT" did nothing.  Acrobat XI then crashed.  I attempted uninstalling X and XI in order to reinstall XI--but Application Manager viewed it as still installed.  I looked up this problem and found the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool: downloaded and ran it then restarted my computer.  Application Manager is still seeing Acrobat XI as being installed--but it does not appear in the list when attempting to run Creative Suite Cleaner again.  Currently stuck without any version Acrobat and need it asap...

These steps should fix your problem:
Run the uninstaller by double-clicking the Adobe Acrobat XI Pro link in the folder Applications > Utilities > Adobe Installers.
Run the Adobe Cleaner Tool again to see if anything from Acrobat remains.
Relaunch the Adobe Application Manager (AAM) either from the shortcut in the Applications folder, or from clicking the Download link for Acrobat on the Creative Cloud Apps page https://creative.adobe.com/apps.
Hopefully you will not see the blank end-user-license-agreement (EULA) screen again. But if you do this is a known issue.
Fix described here: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/known-issues-acrobat-xi-reader.html (see Blank EULA screen)
"Blank EULA screen. Problem: Mac OS only. On launch, a blank EULA screen appears, which cannot be accepted, and Acrobat does not run. This problem can appear if you have any products installed from CCM or from Creative Suite, and you tried installing Acrobat XI from a different source.
Workaround: Launch any other product which is part of the CCM or Creative suite. Then, deactivate it by choosing Help > Deactivate. Quit the application. Then, launch Acrobat and accept the EULA. Then, for the CCM subscription product, launch it and select License This Software to enable the CCM product again. If a CS application, launch it and reactivate it. [3338419]"

  • Booting into empty grub prompt and slow GDM

    Hello,
I haven't performed update for long time and I did last day. I had issues related to /sbin exists etc which I have resolved by following the instructions posted in the Arch linux website. However after a successful update, I have the following issues.
    (1) - When I log in back, it puts me into an empty grub prompt. I figured out that pacman changed menu.lst to menu.lst.pacsave. So from the grub prompt, I did
    configfile /grub/menu.lst.pacsave
and I got the arch linux boot screen.
    (2) - It started booting and loaded GDM with the login screen. Login and key strokes are very slow here. Even after login, I don't see GNOME shell. I don't see any errors while booting.
Any help to fix these issues would be good.
    Cheers
    Navaneeth

What exactly did you do when following the instructions? That is, following them is good, but it would be better if people could make sure there was no misunderstanding which might be causing issues.
You need to go back further through the news as you have evidently ignored various changes to Arch.
For example, legacy grub has not been in the official repos for some time. When you updated, grub2 (which is now called grub) replaced grub (legacy). Hence the pacsave. But you still have grub legacy installed as your boot loader. If you want to keep using it, install the AUR package which has been updated to work with the new filesystem package. Otherwise, configure and install grub (i.e. grub2) or install an alternative such as syslinux.
You are likely to have other pacnew and pacsave files. You need to look through pacman's output (/var/log/pacman.log) and follow the instructions there to ensure that your system is properly configured in light of the updates.
Arch is meant to be updated frequently. If that isn't an option, you would be better served by a different distro.

    After googling and such.
I tried to use the grub command to boot it manually but couldn't get it work.
I noticed some files are missing in /boot folder.
( Not sure, but from the look of it it seemed
there is no such file initramfs-linux.img and vmlinuz-linux for me to run initrd or linux command in grub )
So I boot back into the CD and ran "pacstrap -i base base_devel" & "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" again.
    And the file is there!
    And I booted into Arch!
    cheers:)

  • Grub Prompt

I was updating my menu.lst file  and then thought I had to run grub-install so I ran the following command
    sudo grub-install --root-directory=/boot hd0
    No Errors.
But when I rebooted I was presented not with my menu.lst, but the GRUB prompt.
I manually ran the menu.lst commands into grub and then booted successfully.
But every time that I reboot I get the grub prompt.
I have a separate boot partition on /dev/sda1 (I only have one hardisk).

    Firstly, you don't have to run grub-install after editing menu.lst. -- I know that now . . .

  • HP Solution Centre reports unable to start as printer not installed; but I can print!!!

My Officejet Pro 8500 A909g suddenly stopped working. It was connected to my HP Pavillion dv9700 by wireless and has been for the last 6 months or so. My laptop is running on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I have made no software or hardware changes since I last used the printer; just a few hours ago.
I can now print again (having run through all the steps listed below), but can no longer use the HP Solution Centre to run any tasks as it reports that it 'cannot run because  the device installation is not complete'
In order to get back to printing, I did all the usual of shutting everything down...computer, router and printer...all to no avail.
Then I downloaded the latest printer software from the HP site (OJP8500V909_Full_14.exe) and first ran the uninstall section of that software; removing ALL of the HP software from my machine.
I used CCleaner to remove all traces including those from the registry as well.
I uninstalled and re-installed the software.... 3 times. (at least it gave me a chance to catch up on reading a good Terry Pratchett book)
Each time I varied the conditions relating to my antivirus... Kaspersky. First by leaving the AV running; then by switching off the AV and switching on the Windows firewall; and then finally by switching off both the AV and the Windows Firewall.
On each occasion, during the installation, the software 'finds' my printer on the network; reports that it is installing, but when it gets to the end of the installation and moves on to the part where it reads 'configuring the printer', it gets stuck and after waiting for some time with the green progress light moving from side to side, nothing further happens.
I have downloaded and run various 'help' bits from the HP site ; HPHNDU.EXE and HPPDU.EXE and printed the test pages from them as well as printing from Word and Adobe pdf; so there is now no problem in printing.
Now, when I run the installation software again without uninstalling, depsite inputting the IP Address of the printer, I still get the error message that no printer could be found on the network?????
    What have I missed here??
    Thank you

One very important place to remove the other software is in the "server properties" in your printer folder.  You need to click on your printer icon in the printers folder> then look for "server properties" , click it> go to drivers> remove all instances of your first printer you originally uninstalled.  For some reason the drivers get hung in this and have to be removed in order for you to configure your device- Let me know of any questions
