Installer Extension (update problem)

Hi,
I tried a little example with the installer extension of JWS. For the first time visit all is fine. The installer is starting and installs something (stupid :-).
Also the second and third time visit all is running fine.
So, I'm happy and try to modify my application. I expect that the installer will called to uninstall and then make a new install with the modified application.
But when I try to call my new application I get an error.
The application hangs during the initialisation process
(downloading installer-descriptor).
In the log I get the following error:
java.lang.NullPointerException
     at com.sun.javaws.LaunchDownload$2.visitExtensionDesc(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.jnl.ExtensionDesc.visit(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.jnl.ResourcesDesc.visit(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.LaunchDownload.checkJNLPSecurityHelper(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.LaunchDownload.checkJNLPSecurity(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.Launcher.downloadResources(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.Launcher.handleApplicationDesc(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.Launcher.handleLaunchFile(Unknown Source)
     at com.sun.javaws.Launcher.run(Unknown Source)
     at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
Any idea?

I've put my example in the web, see
http://www.mpi.nl/world/tg/j2se/jnlp/test/installer/
Main and Installer are opening exit-buttons each.
I saw the Installer button once, but failed to see him again. Any hint appreciated.
I get the same Exception as in the initial posting:
as soon as any jar or jnlp file is updated (touched)
JWS hangs and must be aborted. Log says NullPointerException at
com.sun.javaws.LaunchDownload$2.visitExtensionDesc
I can confirm what dmullens describes:
setting _default.locallyInstalled=false
in file ELinstaller.jnlp will allow you do get a new update.
But this is no good! It will work only one time
because the next update will set
_default.locallyInstalled=true  back which reveals the bug again.
I have two questions:
1) Why don't I see the JFrame of the Installer?
2) Can I change the source code in order to prevent the
visitExtensionDesc Exception?

  • Installer/Software Update problems

I am having problems with installing or updating some software. When I try to start the installer, it acts as though it is going to work: the icons in the dock move to make room for another icon but then move right back and close the gap. The installer never runs long enough to generate or change the display. This has happened with three different software packages: iMacEFIUpdate1.3; Kodak EasyShare v 6.0.2; and Parallels-Desktop-5582-Mac-en-ND.
I talked to Kodak about the problem. All they wanted to do at first was help me download the installer. After I convinced them I had a good download, they sent me a CD containing the software. Same result - no installation.
The problem with the iMacEFIUpdate1.3 happened today. It was part of a group of six updates and I was not at the computer while the updates were being downloaded and installed.
Other software updates and installations have worked with no problems.
I have repaired permissions, but did not start from the installation disk. Could this be the problem?
I am at a loss as to what to try next. Does anyone have a solution?

Easyshare 6.0.2 when downloaded from Kodak is a standalone installer Application, not an installer package ....it can't be opened directly by "Installer" but should simply run on its own when double-clicked. I imagine that the Kodak supplied CD version is exactly the same.....
ctrl-click on the easyshare installer, choose 'get info' , in the 'Kind' section it will likely say "Application - Universal" If so, then that explains why 1: Installer won't open it, and 2: why there's no 'open with' dialogue for it.
The previous system should be ( just as your Console message said...) in HD/Previous Systems.localized/Previous System 1/ It's not normally invisible.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 explains how the Archive and Install works, I don't know offhand why some people get Previous Systems.localized rather than plain 'Previous Systems' but it doesn't seem uncommon.
Apple say "Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer" so I wonder if that might cause you problems later? Certainly something seems off here ( the default application for anything shouldn't be pointing at something in the Previous System )
Anyway, assuming you're gonna soldier on for now with Tiger on a Leopard-shipped Mac.... I guess that leaves the Easyshare installer not working? If you've double-clicked the Easyshare installer, it bounced in the Dock, and nothing more happened; there might be something in the Console log explaining why.... or a crash log for it in /Users/BigBob/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/
try the Easyshare installer app again - & look at the console log for clues while you do it.

  • Installation Problems, Permissions Problems, SW Update Problems, Solved

I'm posting here to relate some problems I've had and how I ultimately solved them, in the hope that it might help somebody.
The following relates to OS 10.5.4 on an imac PPC 1.8.
It started (at least the first symptom I noticed was) with Super Duper not working to auto-clone my drive, because the first thing SD does before running a clone job is to repair permissions on the subject drive. The repair permissions task failed with "the underlying task failed" error.
So I tried the manually repair permissions from Disk Utility and got the same "the underlying task failed" error. It's a bit alarming not to be able to repair permissions. I tried a reboot, no change. This persisted for at least a week as I didn't have time to aggressively go after it.
Then I purchased DiskWarrior (again - owned it years ago in Sys 9 days), as in my experience that was the "if all else fails" fix for everything directory-related. I booted from another blessed drive (do people still say that anymore? lol, showing my age) and ran DW on the drive in question. Sure enough DW found and fixed about 150 problems. Great I think, reboot from the original drive, run Disk Utility, repair permissions...nope! Same error. What now? I checked the console installer log for more and all the errors looked like "failure to write" permission type errors. Grr.
Verify Disk ran OK. I checked the SMART status and it was OK, as I was by now worrying about the physical drive.
Then along comes the 10.5.5 incremental update in Software Update and I get the following error: "The Installer could not install some files in "/" check permissions". Doh! Same thing with the Java update. Since I can't repair permissions I'm stuck.
So now I have only one course of action (well maybe there were others, but this is what I did) which was to do an Archive and Install. My OS X DVD is 10.5.0 so that is what I got of course when I reinstalled.
Running Disk Utility after the A&I allowed me to repair permissions successfully. Some progress. But now I had a slew of updates to get back to the present version of everything. Most installed successfully, except the 10.5.5 combo update. For that I got "package contents could not be validated". Rats.
So I decided (after reading here about SW update problems especially with combos) to manually download the 10.5.5 combo. For some reason running SW Update under 10.5.0 gave me download rates of 32kb/s, where I am used to 1.1MB/s. Projected download time 3 hrs....no way! So I booted back to my 10.5.4 clone and downloaded the 612MB at normal speed there. I downloaded the 10.5.1 incremental as well just in case.
Finally I was able to run the 10.5.5 combo (manually downloaded) successfully. Check Disk Utility and repair permissions...all good. Run SW Update and get the Java update, all good.
    Deep breath. Phew.
So there you have it. I was able to fix it all. I probably didn't need to buy DW (but it's so great I'm ok with that) as I conclude now that the A&I ultimately was the real fix. It was a very frustrating experience though, especially with SW update giving me a bad download.
I'm hoping that this post might now show up in searches and help somebody out there.
    Cheers
    G

I don't think you have either of those kernels... as they don't exist.  I assume you meant that you are using 3.10.5 and supposedly have 3.10.6 installed.  You issue is a bit of a catch 22, as you are unable to mount the ESP (no vfat module matching your running kernel), yet mounting the ESP would be required in order to properly udpate.  I imagine that you actually have the correct kernel as /boot/vmlinuz-linux.  But whatever mechanism you use to copy it from that location to the ESP didn't work.
You are going to have to boot from live media, and fix this from a chroot.  Please search around for how to do this, as this information is all over the place.
Looks like I'm in for a treat. I chroot-ed, did a full upgrade in case there was an even newer kernel (and there was, 3.10.7). After the upgrade I copied /boot/vmlinuz-linux, /boot/initramfs-linux.img and /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img to /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ renaming the files vmlinuz-arch.efi, initramfs-arch.img, initramfs-arch-fallback.img respectively. I unmounted everything and rebooted. Now reFINd freezes as soon as it tries to boot Arch.

  • Keep getting ".kext" errors during software installation or updates

This has been going on for a while now, though presently I am finally getting a pattern in terms of incedent times. Previosly, I was getting ".kext" error messages all the time. Then I tried re-installing Snow Leopard and that redueced the number of incedents. Now with Lion, they only happen with Software installation or updates. The messages usually start appearing when the instalation process gets to "moving components into place" or something like that. So, that leads me to think they are related to some some components. Usually the message reads something like "
/System/Library/Extensions/LogitechQuickCam.kext"  has not been installed properly. Please reinstall it or contact the vendor for assisstance." That is usually the first alert to appear and when I click Okay, another appears in its place but with a different .kext file named. Here are the .kext files named listed in usual order of appearence:
    /System/Library/Extensions/LogitechQuickCam.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWireless3G.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWireless3G.kext/Contents/Plugins/NovatelWirele ss3GData.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/SMSIWirelessModem.kextt/Contents/Plugins/SMSIWireless CDC.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/SMSIWirelessModem.kextt/Contents/Plugins/SMSIWireless Serial.kext
I recognize the first one becuase I did have a Logitech QuickCam once, though it didn't last. The ones that have RIMBB probably refer to the Blackberry I used to have. At one point I did use it as a modem for my Mac. I don't recognize the other ones.
Is there anything I can do to stop getting these alert messages? Any ideas? Thank you!

A kext is a kernel extension (usually drivers) that affects the OS kernel at the lowest possible level. This is one of the things Apple wanted to limit as much as possible with the new MacOS architecture since extensions were one of the sources of fragility in OS 9 and lower. It may be as simple as finding the programs that installed these files and using the uninstaller that should exist. (Or not) You might try drilling down into the Extensions folder and removing those files by hand but the problem is there might be other things that were installed when these files were which will continue to cause trouble.

  • Installer extensions and "uninstall". Still no chances?

    Hello,
I've looked through this forum and found many questions about "uninstall" installer extension not invoking when application is removed. I have found out that "uninstall" is only invoked when removing the extension but not the application. This is also confirmed in this thread by dietz333: "...+uninstallers not run when removing an app is a known problem with JDK6. When we moved to a shared cache between javaws and plugin, we no longer uninstall extensions when uninstalling an app that uses them. This would be a problem if multiple apps and/or applets were using the same common extension. I suspect we can address this in a future update, at least if the extension is from the same codebase+."
Most discussions of this problem is dated 2007 or earlier, so I hoped that this problem should be resolved by now, and also there's a [bug report|http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6515728] with state "Fix Delivered". However, I'm using 1.6.0_05 and still get "uninstall" invoked only when removing the extension.
Is there any chances it will work or I just need to forget about this feature?

  • New Safari 5.1.2 won't install extension updates!

I have become so frustrated with Safari and it's instability.  I was so hoping the most recent 5.1.2 update would fix the crashing but, alas, not to be.  Now, on top of the crashes and freezes, I found that it won't update any of my Safari Extension updates.  I've done all the typical things like shutting down and restarting but that didn't work.  Anyone else experience this problem?

It could be an extension that's causing the crash and freeze issues.
    Try this...
    Go to ~/Library/Safari/Extensions
Move the Extensions.plist file from the Extensions folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
FYI... the reports are for Safari developers. They will not reply or contact you. Also, expecting a Safari update to be a, "fix".... don't pin your hopes on that.

Sorry I gave this a 'this helped me' but after a long struggle I found some ticked box somewhere from some unauthorised chrome extension blaaa....... the link you gave was great, not only did it confirm all the bad things google is supposed to be up to it provided a better browser. Cheers man.
Anyone who find this; I disabled all extension in chrome. I then searched the word proxy in the settings section. A button came up, "change proxy settings" I clicked on it. Earlier it was greyed out as an extension was interefering.. It brought up a box with my own settings from my computer. Then I clicked LAN settings, then unchecked the 'Use a proxy server' button.
P.S. If you're using chrome, bail, and dowload Komodo Dragon. It's virtually identical, but you're not tracked, and you can use chrome extensions, and you can quickily transfer your chrome preferences into it.

  • 10.6.6 update problems for MySQL

I tried this in another area, but received no responses... trying again here.
I just performed the 10.6.6 update and following restart, I can no longer get MySQL to start up. There was a similar problem with a previous update (I believe in Oct 2010). At that time, MySQL was starting up, but Apple had changed the location of "mysql.sock" (socket file) to a non-standard location (from "/var/mysql/" to "/tmp"). Unfortunately they forgot to tell users that they were doing this and it about a week before someone (a user) discovered the source of the problem and create a solution. As a full-time, large-scale web developer, that cost me a week's worth of income!
Once again, MySQL will not start up, but apparently for totally different reasons (and again without any forewarning from Apple. MySQL will not start from the command line either, but gives no indication why it fails. I've now spoken with 3 Apple Support techs, including a "Senior Advisor". None of them even knew that MySQL was part of the standard OS-X installation!
Has anyone else experienced this problem or could suggest possible solutions? I am desperate to get this figured out, as I'm supposed to fly out of Denver to New Orleans on Monday morning to do a major site installation and I can't even get to the data on my MacBook Pro to upgrade the MySQL installation on my web servers.
    HELP!!!

After trying everything I could think of, I finally just gave up and did a clean reinstall of the MySQL application. At this point, I had MySQL loading again. At some point, it mysteriously quit working again, so I repeated the process. Unfortunately, since I reinstalled the same version as the previous, the NEW install overwrote the OLD install and wiped out over 100 databases (48 active, the rest backup and Dev versions) during the installation.
No problem, right? I'll just recover from my Time Machine backup. First, however, since I've been traveling over the holidays, my most current Time Machine backup was Dec 17. Second, I couldn't figure out a way to get Time Machine to restore anything in the hidden directories (/etc/, /usr/local... ), without doing a full reinstall, which would have resulted in loss of considerable work performed in the past 3 weeks.
Logging into Terminal as root, I was able to walk my way through the various backup folders in an attempt to find the most recent backups of each database. After 36 hours of continuous tinkering (counting a 7 hr span to create a fresh "clone" for safety), I finally have it working again. I know without a doubt, that I've lost a great deal of database work, which will mean doing a lot of duplicate effort. But at least I'm up and running again. And I realize that on a Windows box things could have been much worse. But who wants to do anything twice (unless you get paid for it both times)?
In short, there was no quick and easy "solution". The lesson to be learned? Never, never, never do a simple OS upgrade, without first doing a full backup (even if it does take 7+ hours)! I hope this at least helps someone else avoid the same headache.
    Thanks for your feedback.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
