Installing OS X 10.5 on a blank Hard Drive

Is it possible to install mac OS 10.5 on a blank hard drive?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes it is. Just insert your 10.5.x install disc and after you select your language select Disk Utility from the menu. Then choose your HDD and click the "Partition" >> "Options" tab then create a single partition as GUID.
Then return to install and install 10.5.

  • How do I install snow leopard on to a new blank hard drive?

I just bought a new 1TB Seagate Sata Solid State and properly installed it into my 2006 model Macbook because I was running out of space. But I can't figure out how to get snow leopard back on. I've been researching all day and I've tried partitioning the Snow Leopard installation disc and it wouldn't let and I've also tried using my 500gb external hard drive with the time machine back up but that also won't work. I'm not sure what to do and when I go to disc utility it picks up my new hard drive, so I'm pretty sure it's compatible.

Is your Snow Leopard installation disk white in color or gray?
    How far did you get:
Did you get this display? ( After turning on the Macbook and inserting the Snow Leopard Disk)
Did you click on the 'Install Mac OSX'/
    Did you get this display?
If you did, click on the 'UTILITIES' button in the lower left hand corner.
You then should get this display:
Click on the RESTART button in the lower right hand corner.
You then should get a menu where you can select DISK UTILITY.  Select it and format the internal SSHD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility>Erase.
    Then proceed with the installation.
In testing on my test MBP, it hung up after the restart, but I have different equipment than you have so I hope you will not experience the same issue.  If you do, let me know and we will try other options.
    Ciao.

  • How to install Mountain Lion on blank hard drive

I bought a used macbook with the understanding that the hard drive crashed and I had to completely replace it. I've bought and installed a new, blank hard drive in the macbook and I was wondering if I could purchase mountain lion from the apple store and install it on a completely blank hard drive. When I first booted it up, it takes to to a screen that asks me for my wifi password and has an icon for internet recovery. I've clicked on it and after a while it shows me a globe with a question mark and the website for apple support. Please tell me I haven't already messed it up :S

You need to install Snow Leopard or Lion first to install Mountain Lion online via Mac App Store.

  • Have macbook pro early 2011, blank hard drive (new), no install DVD, inadequate internet connection. How do I install an OS in the thing ?

Have macbook pro 15" early 2011, blank hard drive (new), Install DVD not available and an inadequate internet connection.
How do I install an OS in the thing ?
Can I purchase an installation disk? (I think it originally shipped with snow leopard 10.6.6)
My first time with Macs and I would love to get it going.
    Thanks....

You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes
    international calling numbers.
You can upgrade the firmware to enable Network Restore: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. After upgrading you can do the following:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    NicholasLiban -
When you use the Lion restore as described, it does a fresh install on the hard drive that you can select at the beginning of the process.  This provides a complete install of the very latest version of Lion, including the recovery partition.  The drive that you choose for the installation destination winds up like what you would have on a brand new computer from Apple.

  • Blank Hard Drive

Someone recently gave me a Macintosh with a blank hard drive.  I know nothing about Macs or the computer except that it has a G5 processor and all the hardware works great.  How can I buy and install an operating system onto my hard drive? Embarassingly, I'm not even sure what type of Mac it is to be honest.  I'm just looking for somewhere to start. It looks like the one in the picture when entering this forum. All help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
    -Matt

Unfortuantly for the past (approx.) 7 years or so all the Apple desktops cases look similar.  Yous say it's working so click the System Profiler in your /Application/Utilities folder (or possibly click Apple menu, select About this Mac, More Info).  Then you will get a window giving you info about your machine.  Click Hardware, and that's the overall summary of what you have.  Use that info for futre reference and when requesing specifics about your machine particularly model id, processor name.
As for the hard drive, if it works, then you would need install it anf to format it with Disk Utility.  But at this point more basic preliminary info is needed if someone simply gave you a drive.  Is it SATA or PATA?  Does it have jumpers?  Maybe post its model number along with the machine info would be helpful.

  • Hello, I have a G5 PPC. I want to install a copy of Entourage on the second hard drive. Can I do that or will it create problems for the processor?

    Hi everyone
I had a very old intel iMac from late 2006 which was dying now dead. I just managed to copy the Entourage folder onto an external hard drive before the iMac gave up the ghost. But I could not open the Entourage copy on the G5 PPC. each time i tried to do so the PPC copy of Entourage would open instead.I have emails on the PPC copy and do not want to lose them. I was wondering if it would be possible to install another copy of Entourage on the second hard drive? I was hoping that by doing that I could access the information from the iMac which has been copied to an external hard drive.
Any help would be very very welcome.

I don't think MS lets you install Entourage outside of an active system folder. However, you can install a fresh copy of Entourage on the G5's hard drive (if you have Office 2008 or lower), then use Entrouge's Import command to move the data files from the old hard drive.
We're done this several times as we've upgraded either computers or Entourage.
However, I think that, before you act, you should also ask in Microsoft's user forums here:
    Office for Mac forums
They are excellent and often an employee of their Macintosh unit will assist in answering.

  • Installing windows xp pro on a separate internal hard drive in ntfs

Does anyone here know how to install windows xp professional on a separate internal hard drive in NTFS with bootcamp. In the bootcamp manual it says I can ,but when I reach the list of partitions in xp setup, C: Partition3<BOOTCAMP> {FAT32} Is not on the list. I called support and they told me Apple doesnt support BOOTCAMP on a separate drive and to check the forum though the manual says It can be done.

Rather easy enough to do. People install XP and Vista all the time on 2, 3rd or 4th drive in Mac Pro. I know Vista 64-bit on Mac Pro has best support for addressing RAM and drivers.

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

how do i get a recovery disk or download for os 10.5.8?  my system was installed by an apple store when replacing my hard drive.  i did not get a backup disk.  macbook is a 1.1 from mid 2006 and 10.5.8 is as far as i can go..  use this as a utility backup when my new macbook pro with mt lion screws something up---which seems like a daily event. do i have to install a lesser version of leopard then install the update.  does software update even work anymore for leopard?  im so in the dark and when i look at the console i just freak.

Hello, your best bet would be to clone your drive to an external drive, which will be bootable.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

    Or SuperDuper...

You're not likely to see any updates show up for 10.5.x
The very first MacBook 1,1s can actually run 10.6, which is updatable to 10.6.8, but will only run in 32 bit mode on yours.

    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • Down loaded Mavericks, will not install on my computer because it says "this hard drive is used for time machine back up".

Down loaded mavericks, it will not install on my computer because it says" this hard drive is used for time machine back up". So I used my old computer  hard drive for back up and reloaded the program but it still says the first hard drive is being used.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Make sure you have selected your MacBook Pro's hard drive as the destination to install Mavericks. If so, you have the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive.
That's the folder used by Time Machine to store backups of your files, and the Mavericks installer understands that your internal hard disk is the Time Machine drive.
To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb", empty the Trash and run the Mavericks installer. Finally, install OS X Mavericks

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
