Installing .rpm packages onto solaris 10.
Hi,
Can anyone help me by providing the steps to install .rpm package into solaris 10 os?
Thanks
RPM is just a packaging format, and the tools are available on the Solaris Software Companion CD, in the SFWrpm package. You would need to install the package on your system in order to get the RPM tools.
But I think Pascal's point is that the payload is typically Linux binaries, so installing a Linux RPM on Solaris would not be productive. But you could certainly install a source package, for example, or create your own RPM containing Solaris binaries.

Install a package from Solaris 10 cd
Hello,
I accidentaly removed a package (namely SUNWgcc) from the system. I have the Solaris 10 CDs. Is it possible to install this package for the CD? I check the CD and it looks like SUNWgcc on it is not a package that I can install with pkgadd -d.
Thank You,
PN.This does not seem to work from the Solaris 10 CD 1 -
the CD directory structure is different.
Specifically I am trying to install SUNWmfrun which
is in the /cdrom/tmp/root/var/sadm/pkg directory.Don't go there.
Stay in the Product directories on the CDs. You'll find the package there.
However this directory doesn't have a pkgmap file in
it so running the pkgadd command fails. No, that's not a package. /var/sadm/pkg contains information about the package database, so some of the files and directories there have the same name as packages (but they're not packages).
Further investigation shows another directory,
/cdrom/tmp/root/var/sadm/pkg/SUNWmfrun/save/pspool/SUN
Wmfrun which does have that file, but running pkgadd
against that directory fails completely.Still not a package.
How can I use pkgadd to add packages from the first
CD in the Solaris 10 installation? The packages are in the 'Product' directory.
Your paths seem odd. You have a normally booted host and you're just inserting the CD? What are the contents of /cdrom?

How to install .rpm packages in Fedora Linux?
Hi all
I am trying to download .rpm packages for my Fedora 10 Linux but don't have a clue on how to install those? First of all, when I download them, they automatically go to my Home directory (that is on my desktop). However, when I login to the Terminal and then login as root...and give this command..
rpm -i <rpm file name>
or
rpm -ivh <rpm file name>
...it says, there is no such file or directory. Now, my question is..how do I get these .rpm files (that are on my computer Home) to the root so that the above command can work and actually installs these?
Please help.

try running rrpm -qR binutils-2.15.92.0.2-15.0.0.0.2.x86_64.rpm
and make sure you install all pre-requisites rpm. It seems to me complaining about in-correct version of glibcc.. -

pls tell me whatYou need to either use the full path - /opt/sfw/bin/rpm or add /opt/sfw/bin/ to the path statement in your profile.
If you are trying to run from the /opt/sfw/bin/ directory then you do the following:
# ./rpm
RPMs are mainly for Linux. I have seen only a couple RPMs for Solaris in the last 15 years and they came from a third-party vendor. What are you trying to install??

How to install RPM-4.1 package on Solaris 8?
I have a Sparc Sun-Fire-V240 server with Solaris 8 software. Now I want to unpack a rpm which created on Redhat 8 with RPM-4.1. It caused a coredump. I guess it is because the Solaris 8 has only RPM -3.0.4. Should I install RPM 4-1 to Solaris 8 to unpack it? Does Solaris 8 support RPM-4.1? or any other solution? Thanks!

We have the same problem with OIM 11.1.2 on Solaris SPARC 10 - just after extend WLS domain to OIM & SOA servers AdminServer fails to start with message "syntax error at line 30: `JVM_TYPE=$' unexpected"

I changed *$DOMAIN_HOME/bin/setOIMDomainEnv.sh* : instead of

Unable to install .p5p package in global zones in Solaris 11
Hello All,
I have few zones configured on my Solaris 11 node which are up and running. I have a package in a .p5p archive package which i need to install in my global zone as well as the non-global zones. I dont want to use a network based repository for the installation.
When i try to install the package it gives me the below error
"pkg install: The proposed operation on this parent image can not be performed because
temporary origins were specified and this image has children. Please either
retry the operation again without specifying any temporary origins, or if
packages from additional origins are required, please configure those origins
persistently."
1. How to install a .p5p package without a network based repository ?
2. Is it possible to install packages from the global zone to non-global zones without having to log on to each of the zones ?
TIA,
SudhirPackage can be installed from global zone to local zone. When you issue pkgadd command from global zone it will distribute the package to local zones.Solaris 11 packaging does not use pkgadd(1M), it uses pkg(1M), described in more detail in pkg(5). Unlike in Solaris 10, the global zone and each non-global zone can have a disjoint set of packages. Thus, it is possible to minimize the global zone but have a zone that has most of Solaris installed. To allow this, pkg does not cause packages that are installed in the global zone to be automatically installed in non-global zones. For most use cases, this is a big improvement over the way things worked in Solaris 10.
Note that pkgadd(1M) is still available in Solaris 11 to allow you to install legacy svr4 packages. Even when using pkgadd on Solaris 11, it does not cross zone boundaries. -
Noob can't install VirtualBox 4.1.8 onto Solaris 11 11/11
deepest apologies if this being posted in the wrong forum; moderators: please move as appropriate.
i have been trying for 3 days to install VirtualBox onto Solaris 11 ... unyielding frustration.
i followed the user's manual punctiliously: signed in as root, gunzip'd VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.tar.gz to /home/nweissma/Desktop and then pkgadd .. THE TERMINAL OUTPUT FOLLOWS:
Password:
Oracle Corporation SunOS 5.11 11.0 November 2011
root@new-host:~# cd /home/nweissma/Desktop
root@new-host:/home/nweissma/Desktop *# ls*

LICENSE VB-Install_WhatNow_2.png
os-next-steps.desktop VB-Install_WhatNow_3.png
ReadMe.txt VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS-r75467.pkg
root@new-host:/home/nweissma/Desktop *# pkgadd -d VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg*
pkgadd: ERROR: attempt to process datastream failed

pkgadd: ERROR: could not process datastream from <VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg>
root@new-host:/home/nweissma/Desktop# cd ..
what am i doing wrong?
before rukbat gets upset, i will say that i posted something similar to this on the VirtualBox forum, but i have not received a response in more than 24 hours - nor am i expecting one.
Edited by: Neal Weissman on Feb 20, 2012 11:41 PMh3. I FIGURED OUT THE ANSWER!
when i realized what the problem was, i slapped my forehead so hard that my brain felt a sharp pain, my adrenaline spiralled, and i was a hair-breadth away from a homicidal frenzy.
the answer will cause you gurus to laugh (i can just picture you chuckling!), but to a noob, this was a major obstacle and emotional experience: i was depressed for three days because i didn't know whom to ask these most rudimentary of questions.
the answer is this: Oracle's user's manual dictates, authoritatively,
pkgadd -d VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg
being a noob, besotted by definition, i don't question, but rather i do as i'm told, so i entered verbatim pkgadd -d VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg . solaris rejected it and produced an error report. in the next 36 hours, every permutation of every reasonable, possible modification was likewise unceremoniously rejected.
on the third day, the gods took pity on me: They revealed that the name of the extracted file is not VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg , but rather +it is VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS -r75467 .pkg+ -- the "-r75467" was the gremlin!!
it installed.
