Intel GPU crash on Sager NP5160

Hi,
I just recently bought a Sager NP5160, which works great for the most part. The Sandy Bridge / NVIDIA Optimus graphics seems to be a bit of an issue, however. I've disabled the NVIDIA card with acpi_call (I don't need it), so am using the integrated card exclusively. Problem is, I occasionally get random GPU lockups after a period of use (anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours). Sometimes they completely kill the system, others the mouse cursor continues to move (though everything else is unresponsive) and the network is still up for me to SSH in. I can consistently reproduce the issue by running an OpenGL-intensive program for about 30 seconds.
As for info on the crash, the whole X screen locks up. If it doesn't hard-lock everything, the sound generally keeps going for about 30 more seconds. the mouse continues to respond while the keyboard does not (can't switch to a TTY), and the network stays up. When that happens I can grab logs and shut down, not much more than that (can't seem to recover the system to a working state). As for the info dump, dmesg reports:
[ 120.601980] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
[ 120.601999] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
[ 120.627446] [drm:i915_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_wait_request returns -11 (awaiting 29794 at 29790, next 29795)
X just kinda goes:
[ 120.435] (EE) intel(0): Detected a hung GPU, disabling acceleration.
[ 120.435] (EE) intel(0): When reporting this, please include i915_error_state from debugfs and the full dmesg.
For those interested, an info dump:
i915_error_state
dmesg
lscpi
Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there other packages I should try? Has anyone seen similar issues? Should I submit this as a bug report (to who)? The crashes have been happening with packages both from the main repos as well as testing. I'll probably try compiling the whole shebang (intel-dri, xf86-video-intel, mesa, libgl, etc.) from the AUR -git packages, but can't see that being a whole lot better than what's in testing right now.
Thanks,
- Aaron
Also, random issue with it that's been bothering me, just going to throw this out there:
$ time cat /sys/class/power_supply/AC/online
1
real 0m0.806s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.003s
EDIT UPDATE: Well, -git packages didn't help. Except that mesa-git is slightly broken in the AUR, and didn't install all the libs the DRI driver needed... It caused X to use software rendering - which surprisingly performs so well I didn't even notice OpenGL was software-rendering until I wondered why my CPU usage was so high (and it wasn't vsyncing).

  • T61 - dying Intel GPU?

Hello all, this is probably my last chance to understand what's happening to my beloved T61. I think it's from 2007 or so.Plus, LOADS of love So, the problem I'm experiencing with the display can be seen in the attached pictures. The problem is not constant but comes and goes, (but now it's like this almost all the time), apparently in a random way, although once I noted that it is more likely to appear when there is a lot of white on the screen. It looks like pixels of a certain colour are turning red, for example, if I watch a movie, the black bars are all red. It's for sure not a screen problem, but graphics artefacts. I know what a tinted flourescent tube looks like as I have already replaced the screen on this laptop. The analogue VGA out works correctly. Installed different versions of the driver several times. In the beginning this seemed to solve the problem, but now that doesn't help anymore. Is the GPU about to die? if that happens, will I be able to still use the VGA out or will I have to replace the motherboard? Thanks for helping out!

.think about buying another one...preferably with Quadro GPUs! I'd have to disagree here. If the intel GPU did actually die it's the first I'm aware of ever dying, but the nVidia were plagued with failures, but in any case there was a recent cache of brand new motherboards for this model found, the latest revision with support for Penryn processors and I think there are a couple left. If you'd like one you can send me a PM and I'll confirm it's still available.  Looking at the first photo I must admit it looks like a failing backlight, but I agree with the other opinions here that if the external vga adapter displays the same the cause must be the motherboard. As for ram being the cause, I think if your ram was failing to this degree you'd have noticed stability issues too and constant blue screen crashes.  most ram problems can be confirmed by removing one module at  a time to identify the bad one.

  • Photoshop CC only detects Intel GPU instead of AMD Radeon (Win8)

    Hi,
I am running a pc with Win 8 and Intel i7-3630QM CPU.
On my system I am running 2 Video Cards, both Intel HD Graphics 4000 and AMD Radeon HD 7670M.
I set my switchable cards to high performance when using photoshop.exe, but when I check in PS Preferences, the detected Graphic Processor is Intel HD 4000.
How can I set my AMD radeon for higher performances?
    Thanks
    Cecilia

With dual-GPU's, it is often necessary to disable the Intel GPU, usually in the computer's BIOS.
Many laptops have dual GPU's, to allow them to run with low power consumption (on the Intel), and then they automatically switch to the AMD/ATI, or nVidia GPU, depending on which chip is installed, for more graphically intensive work. That often works well, but not in all cases. In most of those anomaly instances, the switching in the BIOS takes care of the issue - inconvenient? Yes, but often necessary. Some users have had good results by disabling the Intel in the OS's Control Panel, rather than at the hardware level with the BIOS.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Successful T61P Nvidia GPU motherboard swap to T61 Intel GPU

    Hi all,
Just finished my first successful T61 Intel GPU motherboard conversion from a failed T61P with the dreaded "fatal" Nvidia GPU disease.  At a very reasonable price, forum contributor Tuus furnished me with a good used T61 Merom/Intel board with a Middleton bios, which allows for faster Penryn CPU's (up to T9500) and SATA2 speeds on a Merom/Intel motherboard.  I used the on-line Lenovo training videos and the Lenovo system maintenance manuals as a guide, and all went quite well.  Thanks to all previous forum posters for providing me with an incredible knowledgebase of Thinkpad laptop system problems and solutions, and in particular TuuS for sharing his upgrade recommendations and repair experience.

  • Intel gpu graphic card dose over heat ?

i have a really bad experience with hp pavilion Dv6, i have many problems with GPU and overheating in the end the GPU corrupted and now i have to buy and replace new motherboard but the only mother board available now is the one with INTEL Graphic card not ATI , my question is if i replace the motherboard, does i going to suffer from the overheating problem again ?? is it better to replace my motherboard with the one that has intel GPU since that may reduce the overall temperature ??
note: my laptop is out off warranty.

The Intel integrated video will definitely run cooler than the ATI video model. The graphics performance will be quite a bit lower, but the Intel is good enough for anything except gaming and CAD and other intense graphics stuff.

  • GS70-2PE - All video outputs are on damn intel gpu. :((((

Is there any chance to disable intel GPU? My friend takes 4k@60hz output over a simple HDMI cable with his ASUS N56vz computer. Because HDMI port is on the nvidia gpu. But with this very expensive computer I can only see 3 options in the nvidia control panel. I cant even see stereoscopic 3d options. Do you have any suggestion? Can I take hdmi output through nvidia GPU?

    Horrible.... Like nightmare...
if you want a laptop to fully use Nvidia then try finding a dual gpu laptop like Y510P from lenovo that has GT750M SLI which disables intel gpu and puts 1 of them as main gpu and other 1 as sli gpu or you can maybe go for Nvidia GT80 that has 2 gpu's if i understood so then it should act like Y510P from lenovo to be nvidia as main only and not using optimus switch.

  • MBP 2010 Intel GPU graphics glitches.

I've noticed that occasionally when my new Macbook Pro switches from the nVidia discrete GPU back to the integrated Intel GPU (tracked by the gfxCardStatus app), the LCD display becomes corrupted, I could best describe it as "sparkly" pixels in visible bands, and occasional wobbling of pixels.
I'm unable to take a screenshot with Grab, which leads me to believe this is a problem between the GPU and the display itself, not with the memory or GPU.

I am (and a few others are, too, it would seem) having the same issue. The integrated GPU corrupts everything, but the nVidia works great. The one problem is I run on battery the majority of the time, so I need to maximize my battery life.
I've been switching between the two by unchecking the "automatic graphics switching" option under "Energy Saver" in the preferences. If it's unchecked, you automatically use nVidia. Otherwise your computer will switch to the integrated GPU whenever it's not doing anything graphics intensive
    Edit:
Also, mine seems to have begun occurring after the most recent software update that was offered.

  • Disabling Intel GPU in the Z68MA-ED55

From what I have seen so far in the BIOS (v10.3), there seems to be no way to completely deactivate the Intel GPU on my i5-2500 with this motherboard.  Am I missing something here, is this feature perhaps planned in a future BIOS release, or is this type of functionality impossible under the z68 chipset?

    Hi
    I found I face the screen flickering issue which causes eyestrain described here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ba … 15_only.29 and here https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentat … tool-guide ; I have Intel HD Graphics/Sandy Bridge/Bay Trail;
By default I have 60Hz but EDID says clock 77.000Mhz
I tried to run util :
    - intel_reg_read 0xC8254
    - intel_reg_read 0xC6204
...these both addresses output is "0x0"
So my question is... how do I know what reg address I have? Or something is wrong with intel-gpu-tools?
p.s. I am not 100% sure it is the screen flickering problem only (so please advise any helpful another suggestion(s)) because I do suspect a wrong conf(s) combination or similar... Currently I came from sna to uxa to make rendering more clear and this worked a bit but still it seems like screen is micro-shaking or I don't know how to describe the effect; So I do need your advise where to look at...

  • MSI GE70 2PE: How to turn off onboard Intel GPU?

    Hi everybody,
According to the system specifications my notebook must have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M graphic device. However, after installing Linux Mint 17 i noticed that the only video device available is an Intel GPU (integrated Intel GPU). When i enter my BIOS, i cannot find any option to disable the onboard Intel GPU, maybe i missed it somewhere. Can anyone tell me how i can disable the onboard (integrated) Intel GPU so i can utilize the NVIDIA graphic device.
All help/hint/tips will be very  much appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Hi Nomko
I'm not sure about Linux (I'm windows based) but would guess that it needs the nvidia linux drivers loaded before the system would recognise the second screen card, the system by default assumes that the intel chip is the one to be used.
Perhaps have a look here for drivers

    Hi Blender,
I don't think this is the solution. If i want to use my NVidia graphic device, the Intel GPU must be disabled. Linux doesn't see the Nvidia graphic device at all right now and installs the driver for the Intel GPU as this is set as the default graphic device.
    But thanks anyway!

I'd like to ask for an unlocked BIOS for GE70 2PE-082XCZK, current BIOS: E1759IMS.52A
My goal is to disable the integrated intel GPU in BIOS as when I disable it via windows device management it seems to disable both GPU's and runs on some sort of phantom GPU(Aero off, games wont run, Afterburner shows GPU1 - (nothing) GPU2 - (nothing))
    Thanks in advance

    intel gpu can't be disabled
