Intel-hda no sound out of speakers. Can't compile alsa cvs. 1420n Dell

Hello!
I'm somewhat new to Archlinux. I am trying to get my intel-hda card to work. I have a Dell inspiron 1420n laptop. Sound will come out of speakers if I plug them into the front headphone jack, but will not come out of the built in speakers on the laptop. I found this forum thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=34420 and they seemed to have fixed the problem, but I can't compile alsa. The drivers compiled fine, but alsa-lib will not. I get the following errors:

I tried finding out if I was missing a python library, but I can't seem to find out any information anywhere. Please help me I love this distro! Everything is all setup besides this pesky audio problem BTW I am in the audio group. Thanks!!

Yeah your right, it very much is. Well, this lappy is the one of the models Dell are selling pre-installed with Ubuntu. I ditched Ubuntu for Arch because I liked it so much on my desktop computer I replaced with this laptop. But in Ubuntu the sound did work (although poor quality). The only thing I had to configure was the video acceleration because it seems all distros don't have support for the i965 (X3100 graphics) chipset yet (got it in Arch with testing packages). Sabayon is the only one I found that claims to support it fully, but I want to use arch. I know my problem can be fixed easily. Everyone else has fixed it, but I think I'm missing something small...

    Hey Amiee_19,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like your Ring/Silent switch may be toggled:
    Ring/Silent switch - iPhone
    http://help.apple.com/iphone/7/#/iph3bd01398
    Ring/Silent switch
Flip the Ring/Silent switch to put iPhone in ring mode or silent mode .
In ring mode, iPhone plays all sounds. In silent mode, iPhone doesn’t ring or play alerts and other sound effects.
Important: Clock alarms, audio apps such as Music, and many games play sounds through the built-in speaker, even when iPhone is in silent mode. In some areas, the sound effects for Camera and Voice Memos are played, even if the Ring/Silent switch is set to silent.
For information about changing sound and vibration settings, see Sounds and silence.
Use Do Not Disturb. You can also silence calls, alerts, and notifications using Do Not Disturb. Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to open Control Center, then tap the Do Not Disturb button . See Do Not Disturb.
If the above does not resolve your issue, see this article:

  • IPod stopped playing sound out of speakers

I have an iPod touch 5th Gen which is around 3 years old and today it suddenly stopped playing sound out of the speakers. If i put headphones in sound plays fine out of them but as soon as I take them out no sound comes out even if there is something playing.
The speakers were working fine around 20-30 minutes before I realized they weren't working and my iPod has been doing nothing but sitting on my desk in that time. I tried restarting my iPod but this didn't fix the issue.

It can't be 3 years old since the 5G iPod was first introduced in Oct 2012
    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

OK , Perhaps i didnt Say this at first But, My speakers, souncard, etc. all Were working fine previously. Just This Past week or so i have lost sound to my rear speakers. The speakers i am using are logitech Z-5500's. As i stated earlier, i can switch speaker connections at soundcard and get sound from the rear speakers. I have tried these speakers on another computer(audigy LS card) and they work on that one without any problems. I have tried the speaker settings console where it shows you a diagram of 5. layout and sound coming from each speaker as it goes around the diagram,it is showing sound symbol for rear speakers but, no sound out of speakers in rear. The creative diagnostics has been run and everything passes in it and shows no problems.

  • How come I can't get any sound out of my speakers

I  have a mid 2011 iMac...can't get sound to come out of the speakers... It was working earlier today... I checked to make sure everything was connected and not muted... Thank you in advance for any help out there...

Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
    2. If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
Try this even if you don’t see the red light.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the appropriate method.
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Make sure that no box is checked under “Mute”.
    6. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
        Play sound effects through:
Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".
7.Launch iTunes and play a song through headphone and adjust the volume
       in  the Mini player.

  • Can't get sound to come out of speakers; new to Logic

Just installed Logic Studio on my new Mac tower intel machine. Have Bose companion speakers plugged into Mac. iTunes etc comes out just fine, but nothing from Logic; Logic comes from the towers tiny internal speaker.
    Help?

Go to the audio hardware preferences, and select which audio interface you want Logic to use.
I strongly recommend getting started with the Getting Started manual, which walks you through all the basic setup stuff.

  • Sound out of both rear speakers when I test back left, but nothing when test back rig

    Hi All
This has probably been posted before but I can't find the answer.
I have a sound blaster x-fi Fatalty platinum card (just upgraded from extreme music)and I am having trouble with sound settings on my speakers. (this happened with the music card to). When I run the speaker setup i get front right, left, center and sub perfectly fine but when it comes to the rear thats another problem. When it says rear right there is no sound of the rear right speaker, when it says rear left I get sound out of both rear speakers.
When installing the platinum I uninstalled the drivers and program both in windows xp and vista (I have a dual boot machine) and reinstalled from scratch but it still does this. (this happens on both windows)
I have a set of Logitech 5500 speakers connected by analog and no digital connection as I use it for games only. On the speakers it is set to Direct input with the effect as 6 channel(which is the way I have always had it when it was working).
My system specs are: Intel 6850 dual core cpu, X-FI extreme platinum, EVGA 8800 GTX video card, 2 gigs of ram, Win xp/Vista premium dual boot, Logitech 5500 5. speakers, Dell 24 inch LCD Monitor.
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be great.
I thank you all in advance.

  • Can't get sound through my speakers in Logic.

So for an assignment I recorded loads of stuff in the studios at uni and come back to mix it on Logic on my laptop and I can't seem to get any sound out from my speakers through logic. Speakers are working cause I'm listening to iTunes. I don't know if it's because the channel out puts were sent to the mixing desk or something? It won't let me change that. But now obviously the mixing desk isn't there. Oh i'm confused.
Sorry, pretty new to Logic and recording anf that, please give me some advice!

Select the correct Output Device in Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio>devices>Core Audio.

My mac desktop will not provide sound from internal speakers.  When I go to audio devices window it only shows airplay.  How can I get internal speakers back.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Sound is not coming out of speakers, but headphones work?

I have a Satellite L505-S5990 laptop. Today while I was sitting at home browsing the Internet, I realized there was no sound coming out of the speakers. It was working just fine minutes before. It was sitting on the counter the entire time and it just silently stopped working.
So I grabbed some headphones and plugged them in and they worked.
I restarted the computer, still no sound coming from speakers.
Windows 7 found no problems while troubleshooting the sound.
I downloaded the Automated Troubleshooting Services to diagnose and fix sound playback issues from Microsoft but that didn't find any issues.
I uninstalled the sound driver and installed the one that came with this laptop. I still get the same result. No sound from speakers but headphones work.
Can anyone please tell me how to fix this?
    Thanks!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just want to add another relieved reader of this thread.  I had lost the sound to my speakers even though I had sound to headphones. I was convinced it was a damaged headphone jack because I had pushed the headphone plug in harder the last evening when my wife complained that she could still hear the speakers while I listened with the headphones.  The next morning--no speaker sound.
I spent a few hours searching the web to see how to disassemble a satellite A505 and get to the jack.  But I wasn't even sure I could get a proper replacement jack that fit, and I was concerned that small damage, say to the ribbon connectors could render the computer useless--a large price to pay for just missing audio.
Fortunately, I stumbled onto this thread and I recalled I had put the unit to sleep the night before--something I don't usually do, but I didn't want all the Chrome web sites to have to reload so I just put it to sleep.
When I put it to sleep again and fired it up--Sound!  I am so glad to find this solution so I just want to let people know it remains a viable option.

  • Sound out reverts to internal speakers at every shut down

Everytime I turn on my Mac Pro I have to go to System Preferences and change the sound to Line out. Every time I shut down the sound out defaults to the internal speakers. is there anyway to stop this?

    Things you can try.
    1. Smc and pram resets.
    2. See if you can get it to "stick" by setting the sound out preference with Audio MIDI Setup (in your Utilitiles folder).
    3. Last resort -- temporarily remove the two plists in /Library/Preferences/Audio.

  • Why are the noises like the lock screen noise sounding like a robot same with any other sound coming out the speakers

Every time noise comes out my ipad via ipad earphones or speakers it sounds horrible nothing like what it is ment to sound like

    Hi there Jamzog21_,
If I understand correctly your sound is not clear on your phone coming from the speaker. I recommend these troubleshooting steps from the following article:
If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker
Follow these steps and test the sound after each one.
Go to Settings > Sounds and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up.
If you can hear sound from the speaker, then the speaker works. Continue with these steps to find the setting or switch that's affecting the sound. If you can't hear sound from the speaker, contact Apple Support.
Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring. If you can see orange, it's set to silent.
    Restart your device.
Open an app that has music or sound effects. Adjust the volume with the volume buttons or the slider in Control Center.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
If there's still no sound, connect a headset. If you can hear sound through the headset, remove it and clear any dust or debris from the headset jack of your device.
If the device is in a case, make sure that the case doesn't block the speaker.
Use a brush to gently clear any debris from the speaker and Lightning connector (or 30-pin dock connector). The brush should be clean and dry and have soft bristles.
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
If you followed these steps and still hear no sound or distorted sound, contact Apple Support.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • No headphones will work on my iPad mini. Sound just continues to come out of speakers

Or go to the store, wait in line, and go 1-800-Geek-Squad. Then hand over the phone to the geek squad guy at the counter when it's your turn, so both departments are confused.
    Don't actually do this.
However, yes, there could be a number of issues with that, it's kind of hard to diagnose over the boards. If you can't figure it out by the time the store opens, bring it in - or call the phone number for 24/7 support.

I have adobe Premiere Elements 13. It will not let me delete audio or have it fade in or out. I can move the yellow line all the way down till the volume reads -0.0, but the sound is still there on playback. I can click on fade in and fade out and the yellow line that graphs volume takes a sharp raise or dip at the beginning or end of the clip, but there is no change in volume when I play back. What am I doing wrong?

    rickeyt
Thanks for the reply. Great news about the volume adjusts.
Now about those fades for the volume. How are you doing that?
    1. Right click the Timeline video audio and select Fade and then
see the Fade options (I had a video with audio file, so I saw the choices as shown in the screenshot)
    2. You can also create two volume keyframes at each end of the Timeline audio clip rubberband (orange line that goes horizontally across the middle of the audio clip). At the position of the Timeline Indicator, click the Add/Remove Keyframe icon, and then with the mouse cursor position the white dots (volume keyframes) to achieve the Fade In and Fade Out audio. In the screenshot below I have moved the Timeline Indicator so that you could better see the white dots (volume keyframes).
Please let us know if any of the above works for you with regard to the audio fades.
    Thank you.

  • Can't get sound out of imac

I am a musician and am trying to mix down some tracks off of a hard disk. I have a hard disc recorder and a mixing board that i am running into an M-audio Firewire solo. I have the signal flow going into the firewire solo and then into my mac. when i click on the system preferences and go to sound I have the fire wire solo as the input and the headphone as the output. i see good signal coming into the mac but can't seem to get any sound out of the mac. the headphne out is hte only thing I see as an output which i have selected. please help - I cant hear anything!!

.. It can't be an m-audio issue when i have a great input signal could it?? ..
with my humble experience of 20 years with Macs - no, that is not neccessairly a (computer's) logic conclusion ..
as said, I just have some know-how with iM/camcorders... and we do experience some same 'effects', e.g. 'cause camcorder is import-disabled, as many Euroepan devices are ... or, we experience control over camera via firewire but no picture etc.pp.
    different approach:
are you able to use your devcie with other apps, e.g. Logic, Grarageband.
it is an audio-interface, I assume, you're using in mainly for ... ehm, audio.
