Intel Xserve kernel errors

when I use java threats on intel Xserve cause this a kernel panic (interlock timeout for mutex)
I can reproduce Is problem with a simple java script ( see below)
Has anybody the same problem or a solution for this problem ?
how to test
save script as MutexSimulator.java and run
# javac MutexSimulator.java
# java MutexSimulator
result : the server gives a kernel error.. and reboots

While I have found a few problems as well, I have gotten the intel xserve fairly stable (it did take a while and a lot of apple support calling)
I haven't had kernal panics, but I haven't been able to get the processors above 45% when doing compression. Also, I had some nasty lun masking problems with the fibre card which did result in corrpution of a HFS raid volume.
On the topic of xsan and the intel xserve, it is a BAD idea to try to install anything prior to 1.4.0. Had hangs, crashes and even corruption of the serial licensing daemon. Installing 1.4 and upgrading to 1.4.1 was a huge fix to those issues.
Overall, after a lot of work, it is working well, and does play back 100MB/s video extremely well off an xsan volume. Although, I would be fully content if I could get compressor's utilization of the CPU from 40 to 100%.

  • Intel Xserve and kernel panic on high I/O load

    Hi everyone,
Having added our 1st Intel Xserve to our server farm for test purposes we have encoutered several kernel panics on high I/O loads to Xsan volumes and standalone Xraid's.
Below is a portion of the system.log after restart.
The amusing part of this is that the crash reporter that suposed to log the reason for the crash crashed itself.
I was trying to use the new Xserve as a backup server but even with about 20% load on all 4 processors it will panic and restart.
Verdict: absolutley unreliable and useless if you need your Xserve to shuffle a lot of data around. The kernel drivers for the Apple FC card has also been changed which caused problems with our Archiware Presstore backup software.(kernel panic)
Looks like Apple is tampering with the multi core kernel of 10.4.8 on the Intel Xenon Processors at the moment and hasn't got it right yet. Well, we got one revision left to get this fixed before 10.5 comes out and that's still miles away from being usuable to say the least.
Thank you Apple, for selling your latest products that don't work as usual.
Any comments of similar experiences are welcome.

  • Intel Xserve won't boot from 3rd party drive in ADM

Right, I've got a Late 2006 Xserve Dual 2.66 with the normal non-RAID SAS/SATA board, which has been running fine for 2 years with a pair of non-Apple Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB drives (Bay 1 & 2), and an original 80GB ADM in Bay 3 as a spare boot disk.
Bay 1 & 2 are set up using SoftRAID and are partitioned into a boot volume (30GB) and a data volume (200GB), both RAID 1 mirrors. The boot volume is cloned nightly to Bay 3 (single volume, set up using Disk Utility). Data is backed up to a utility machine, so this is arrangement lets me handle any single drive failing.
This arrangement has worked fine for 2 years, and allows me to remotely boot off Bay 3 and run DiskWarrior or other disk maintenance software on the normal boot drive without having to drive across town with a firewire drive. I originally started with Mac OS X Server 10.4, but I'm now on Mac OS X Server 10.6.4.
Where things have come unravelled is, I need to upgrade the two 250GBs to something larger. I didn't realise that the Intel Xserve is pretty fussy with ADM sleds and the model of SATA drive they will work with. I didn't have any issues when I set up the Barracuda ES 250GB so wasn't expecting any problems this time.
I bought a pair of Seagate Constellation ES 500GB drives (well 3 actually, one to keep on the shelf as a spare).
I installed them in the sleds and inserted them in the Xserve. The green power LEDs came on but the drives weren't recognised in Disk Utility or System Profiler. I then added the jumper to set them to 1.5Gb/s and then they mounted. I went through my normal process of cloning the OS to them from a standard disk image I have of a known working OS install, ran Disk Utility to repair disk & repair permissions, Disk Warrior to check everything else (my standard paranoid procedures). Set the startup disk to the new install and rebooted. No joy, just the flashing question mark folder. Reboot with the option key, and the new volume doesn't appear in the list of available boot options.
I installed the drives in a firewire enclosure, and it booted without any problems, so it's not a corrupt install, it's something to do with the ADM sleds.
So to go back to basics, I tried initialising a single drive as a single volume and installed 10.6.4 server fresh from the DVD. Same result, no boot when in installed in ADM sled, boots fine in firewire case.
Erased drive, changed formatting to APM (rather then GPT), cloned OS, etc. Won't boot when in ADM sled, boots fine from firewire case. So that screws the theory that drives have to be GPT to boot on Intel hardware.
So I ordered a set of WD RE3 500GB drives (x 3) and repeated this whole process. Same deal, boots fine in firewire, won't boot when installed in ADM. GPT vs APM doesn't make any difference.
Try #3. Ordered desktop variants rather than server class drives. So armed with a pair of WD Caviar Black 500GB. Same deal, boot fine from firewire, will not boot when installed in ADM. Also required jumpers for 1.5GB/s and also the undocumented pins 7&8 (apparently this might be related to the new Advanced Format they are using)
    Try #4
A pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB. This is where it gets tricky. One of the Barracuda will boot the Xserve when installed in an ADM, and one will not. So 2 Barracuda 7200.12, both same model number (ST3500418AS), both same firmware (CC38), yet they behave differently.
    Try #5
    Barracuda ES.2 250GB (x 3). Won't boot in ADM, will boot firewire.
    Try #6
    WD Caviar SE16 250GB (WD2500KS)
Boots in ADM (Yay!!) and firewire
    Try #7
    WD Caviar SE16 500GB x 2 (WD5000AAKS)
    Boots in ADM and firewire
I've managed to get access to G5 Xserve (2.3DP) so I've repeated all this testing on it as well. The G5 doesn't care about the model of drive and boots from any of them using a 10.5.6 install with APM formatted drives.
I've tried all these drives in 4 different models of ADM sled. One thing I have determined is that the model of sled determines if you need to use the 1.5GB/s jumper. I have 2 sleds from G5's, they require the jumper, a 80GB Intel ADM sled with separate data and power plugs requires the jumper, and an Intel 160GB ADM sled with the ribbon cable and combined data/power plug doesn't require the 1.5GB/s jumper. APM vs GPT formatting again makes no difference.
So on the Intel machine, the drives work in the sleds, appear as normal drives on desktop or in Disk Utility when logged in, and also appear as normal drives when connected via SSH if Auto Login is disabled. So to me they appear to be working drives.
It appears to me that something changed at a low level between the Barracuda ES and ES.2 generations of drives (for WD drives as well since the Caviar SE16 that boots is a similar age to the Barracuda ES)
So then why won't it boot from them? Is there some magic dance I've missed?
And how come one of the 7200.12 will boot, while another identical model won't?
Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer for you, but you deserve thanks for all the useful hardware information you posted from your trial-and-error testing.
My impression has that the XServes need specific kinds of firmware and hardware monitors on their drives in order for everything to function smoothly. My own efforts swapping drives in ADMs has produced "mixed results" to put it mildly. It would be so much easier if we knew what kinds of drives worked properly in what kinds of ADMs and on which Macs/XServes.

  • Intel Xserves Crash only on weekends

We have 10 Intel XServes that we received in early December. For some reason anywhere between 2-6 of the 10 crash and become unresponsive, only on the weekends, usually Saturdays. Very odd.
I've been checking them every weekend since we've purchased them and it has been consistent for the last 5+ weeks. They crash only on weekends.
I found this in the crashreporter log on one of the servers, they all have similar logs:
Sat Dec 23 14:28:50 2006 crashdump[120]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
    Sun Dec 24 02:11:08 2006 crashdump[1814]: crashdump started

Sat Jan 13 10:01:33 2007 crashdump[120]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Does anyone have any ideas? What other logs should I be checking?
Quad G5s, Intel XServes   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Xsans, XServe RAIDs, oh my...

The "drone" is our encoding software. That may be the cause, but i'm not entirely sure of course.

  • Intel Xserve power problems

As of recently, I just started noticing a issue with powering on a new intel xserve. If the machine is running, using LOM and shut down works beautifully. After I shut it down, using LOM and the button works beautifully. If i attempt to turn it back on a few min later, it works fine.
If I leave it off for a day or so, even though the lights are on on the front of hte machine, LOM can see the server, but "power on" doesnt do anything, and hitting the front power button doesn't do anything. I have to unplug it from the UPS and replug it in for it to turn on.

    Hi Forum folks.
I've had a 6-month (ish) Xserve doing the same thing. Every day, at least once a day, I'd get an email / SMS, saying the power supply or blower was having a momentary problem.
After shutting down the server, I pulled out the Power Supply Units, and checked them out.
Turns out, one of them had a slightly damaged heat sink (damage visible without opening the PSU). So, I swapped it for a spare I'd purchased. And then got the damaged unit (damaged internally at factory by the look of it) replaced by my Apple Reseller.
Note: the newer Intel XServes (early 2008) have a 750w PSU, compared to a 650w PSU, in the 2006 Intel XServes. The older PSUs fit in the newer Xserves, but they DO NOT function. (You'll get an error in Server monitor).
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,
    Derek

  • Bootcamp on new Intel XServe

Does anyone know if it's possible to run bootcamp on the new Intel XServe machines?
Boot Camp Assistant tells me I need to upgrade the firmware on the XServe before proceeding, but I cannot find this for the new XServes.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
I am trying to install Fedora Core 6 using bootcamp.
    Regards,
    Trevor.
XServe (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    >Well, hwmond won't be running, so the fans won't be controlled
Are you sure about that? hwmond simply logs the hardware status and sends emails if there's a problem. There's nothing in the man page that hints that hwmond is responsible for adjusting the fan speeds. Althouth I don't know for sure, I'd expect that there's firmware-level control of fan speeds based on temperature sensor inputs, not OS-level control.
    > it's unclear whether all the ECC handling will be done
ECC would be handled by the (hardware) memory controller, not by the OS.
There might be no mechanism to check the state of the ECC (e.g. count errors), but I'd still expect to get the benefits.
    > and power supply failover (if you've got the dual supplies) won't work
Again, I'd expect this to be handled by the firmware, not by the OS. hwmond is probably responsible for detecting the failure and reporting it (e.g. via Server Monitor and/or email), but I would still expect the basic power load balancing and redundancy to work - you'd may just need to periodically check the LEDs on the back to check PSU state.
Note, I'm not saying Boot Camp will work, or that it won't work, just that I don't expect these hardware-level features to be affected.

  • Kernel error repeating

I have a white macbook not quite sure of OS think 10.4.2, it was bought mid 2006 so not sure if this matches. Am at work so can't check right now.
The last couple of days keep getting the kernel error and sometimes it turns back on straight away, sometimes if remove battery and replace then it works but generally it just keeps repeating the same error.
I have never added any RAM or anything, the only thing i can think is someone downloaded TVUplayer onto my mac the other day so it came up on the desktop .exe and then couldn't be opened obviously and was put in the trashcan.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you

Home from work the computer is Mac OSX 10.4.11 1.83 GHz intel 512 MB 667MHz
Took many attempts to turn on computer with kernel panic message coming on over and over again, finally am on this computer. No panic logs as it happens as it is starting up, please can someone explain what is happening.
    Many Thanks

  • MacBook Pro crashes with kernel errors

Hi, i'm havinge troubles with my 2009. macbook pro. It keeps crashing down with kernel errors.
I took it to apple, payed for a repair and they didn't fix it. Now i don't know what to do. I recently noticed that my right fan isnt working.
I'm leaving you with one of my error reports if you know how to read them.
Btw, hardware test simple and extended one reports ok. Disk warrior also. Could it be the temperature? Last time it crashet it was at about 76 celsius...crashes are not time reliable, sometimes i just turn it on and it crashes while loading os (its not yet hot), sometimes it can work for an hour or two then die again...

If it's overheating then that's the thermal cut out protecting the system - don't you hear the fan's going at maximum ?  Are you using it on a flat hard surface so there's room for air to circulate ?
If you can't hear the fans running fast then I suggest you run the hardware tests from your install DVD (insert and reboot holding down d) to see if it shows any SNS (sensor) or MTR (fan motor) errors, if so get it to Apple for a fix.

  • Moving mail to Intel Xserve

I have a G4 DP Xserve G4 that is running 10.4.8, and we have just purchased a new Intel Xserve which is running 10.4.8 also. We are setting up the new xserve for a mail server and it is getting moved to a co-lo rack. I have performed an Archive and restore to move the OD list from the old server to the new. All users and groups imported without a problem, then I setup the mail service on the new mac (didn't start it). I then connected a firewire drive to the old mac server, stopped it's mail service, then i ditto /private/var/imap and /private/var/spool/imap folders to the firewire drive. On the firewire drive i had created 2 folders: imap and spool. Inside of the spool folder i also created a folder called imap. These were the destination of my ditto. I then moved the firewire drive to the new server and ditto'd the files from the firewire to the proper folders on the new server. For a few minutes all of my users accounts are listed in the serveradmin-mail-maintenance-accounts window. They then disappear and i receive the following error in the logs window.
    DBERROR: critical database situation
service imap pid 24512 in READY state: terminated abnormally
I can not login to any of my accounts via a mail client (i.e. Entourage) or through webmail.
    Any thoughts?
    Collyn

I have not tried mailbfr for the backup and restore,
but rather have done it manually. Perhaps there is
something I've overlooked that mailbfr has not. Has
anyone had perfect success migrating from PowerPC to
Intel with the maintaining of flags using any method,
    mailbfr or otherwise?
mailbfr copies the configuration files and mailstores. It then runs a permission fix and reconstruct. I suppose this is pretty much what you did manually.
I have seen several migration scenarios (not only mail) having issues when going from PPC to Intel. Not that I have an answer, because data shouldn't be affected by a Processor.

  • Intel Xserve not contactable via Server Monitor

I simply cannot get our new Intel Xserve to show up in Server Monitor. The app just sits there saying "waiting for a response". Our old G5 Xserve shows up, in 10.4 Server Admin and 10.5 Server admin, on either box. Apart from this, the server is functioning normally, no errors, Open Directory, Home Directories, Apache etc. But it's really annoying as in their current environment I need to keep an eye on the core temp etc. Can anyone suggest a way to find out what is wrong?
Thanks for your time - it's much appreciated.

Connect onto the Xserve box (on the console or ARD or such) and follow the instructions to set up the LOM port with a unique IP address, and ensure you're on the same LAN and subnet as the LOM port.
[Here's the basic LOM configuration sequence|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2773].
The initial configuration is (often) via Server Monitor invoked directly on the local box and connected directly to the local host.
Use a unique IP for the LOM on each NIC it is active on.
And remember to power-cycle (and unplug) the box when you make significant changes to the LOM.
It's possible to do this via ipmitool if you don't have graphics console access to the box, but (for the sake of brevity) that access is being assumed here.

  • Intel Xserve with Leopard Server 10.5.5 won't let me in via login

A power outage appears to have created some issues with my intel Xserve, running Leopard server 10.5.5
The System identifier light was blinking, so I booted up from the Leopard disk and found out that my mirrored internal array needed to be rebuilt. No problem, 4 hours later, I repair permissions on the mirrored internal array, everything gets "repaired". Change bootup disk to the internal 10.5.5 mirrored array and reboot. System Identifier light stopped blinking, things were looking good.
The login screen comes up and when I put in the admin username and password, the screen does the shake of the wrong login.
What's weird is, on my laptop I can use Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, and the screen sharing for the server....with the admin username and password.
So, I figure, perhaps the mirror rebuild requires me to reset the admin password. So, boot back up from the Leopard Server install DVD, run the password utility. and reset the main account password.
I change the boot drive back to the internal mirror, same thing. I'm stuck. I can't get past the login screen on the actually server....or via the screen sharing...and Server Monitor appears to be stuck at 'waiting for response'. I can, again, use Server Admin and Workgroup Manager on my laptop and make changes to the X server software....but I can't log into the X serve.
My webpage, wiki, etc....are all serving fine. But, I'd like to be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong...log back in and run super duper, etc.
    Help...please...

Spent all day with apple support. They said it sounded like the LADP database was corrupted. They had me try to login as root, via an opendir account, etc. No luck.
So, they suggested I do a fresh install of the Leopard server on an external drive. Did that. They then suggested I use my laptop and the workgroup manager app to log in to the xserver, export users, groups and computers....and to copy over the library/collaboration folder to the external "clean install" of Leopard server.
Did that and followed the instructions to "relink" the metadata.plist files in each group, to the GUID to the groups in workgroup manager. First issue, they weren't different GUID strings.
Well, that didn't work...kept getting file not found error. When trying to access the domain.com/groups/groupname...it should've asked for authentication. And let me into that wiki...but no, apache error page.
So, they had me create a new "test" group....added a user. Start and stopped the web...etc. This didn't create a new wiki entry (when we replaced my custom index.html to the default index where groups/wikis/blogs populate automatically at the main). And, there's no new "test" folder in the library/collaboration files.
They then said "well, it must be because you don't have reverse DNS configured right, that's why the new wikis won't set up". I've contacted dyndns.com...but I don't think that's the problem.
So, I've rebooted my xserver to the internal drive. The wiki and blog is still there, still accessible the way I like....I still can't login to the xserver.
So, I'm wondering, if anyone knows a way I can boot up my xserve in the target drive mode, hook up my laptop and replace / swap whatever admin files so that when I boot up my xserve, I can login again.
There has to be a way to hard fix a hidden file? Replace a DB? Some awesome terminal command to get me in and fix the admin account / password....
Or, does anyone know if the reverse DNS issue applecare cites is legit? Doesn't make sense how, the same public ip and domain name, that's worked for some time...suddenly doesn't???
I'm hoping someone can help me.

  • Resolve the Ethernet Port Issue of New Intel Xserve

    Hi all,
I want to get Clarify the Issues in new Intel Xserve 2.26GHz Quad-Core Xeon "Nehalem" processor. The Network Connectivity of Ethernet is Shows Wrong in System Preference. If I Connect the Ehternet in Port 1, the Port 2 also Shows Connected without Pluging the Ethernet Cable in Port 2.
Port 2 is Shows Green When No Connectivity of Port1 and Port2.
I Tried in 3 Xserves with the above Configuration, all the Server Gives the same Issue. I even Formatted and Reinstalled with all the updates but the Problem prolong.
    Awaiting your replies/suggestions.
    Thanks
    R.ELANGOVAN

Call Apple Support for assistance; this looks to be a nasty error with multiple new Xserve boxes and given these are likely covered under their initial warranty, which implies there's something seriously weird with 10.5.6 or 10.5.7, or with the Xserve early 2009 boxes, or firmware, or with what the configuration tools allow.
It appears that [threadID=2021235|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2021235] and [threadID=2021817|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2021817&tst art=0] are the same case?

  • Intel Xserve Blower for Power Supply 1 Out drops to 0 RPM momentarily

10.5.6 Server. Machine is less than a year old. Yesterday I configured Server Monitor for the first time and have received two notifications of the blower for the Power Supply Out changing to zero RPM. It is momentary and goes back to normal.
Everything else is in the normal range -- temp, voltage.
Is this normal or indication of future failure?

    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,
    Derek

  • Kernel error and forced shutdown

I have an early macbook pro 15" updated to Yosemite.  I had kernel errors before the upgrade - as part of the upgrade erased the disk and used Time Machine to restore.  There were no problems for sometime, but now the shutdowns from kernel error has started again.  They don't seem to happen everyday, but every two days on average.

On Yosemite I did not find the log - but I have the Mac info and the latest panic report and hope that meets the need.  Thanks!

  • Weird Kernel Errors accessing Network Volume

Hallo everybody. I have a very strange problem with a customer who uses about 20 macs. Different machines. No new Intel Macs. All G5 machines. The customer has a network with abouth 20 machines. 100 Mbit Network connection to a Helios (Sun) FileServer. The Uplink to the server is Gigabit and this all goes threw Cisco Networking Switches. Now to my Problem this still exists since 10.4.0. The Macs randomly crashes bei placing pictures in Quark. Let me explain. The customer goes to "placing picture" in quark. Browsing the network volume and than it crashes before they can click on the button import. As first i thought it was a Quark Problem. But quark can not help me. Than i thought it was a finder dialog problem and deactivated all previews and all the other stuff. Nothing helps. Now 10.4.9 comes out and I was full in hope that this fixes my issues because Apple said they updates Finder Network Browsing.
But now the things go crazier. Sometimes the crashes are in Photoshop by saving a picture or open a picture. And of course in Quark with pacing a picture. Now i really do not know what i can do.
I will post here because i hope that someone can help me.

Sorry, poor eyesight when I typed sysct, meant... The sysctl variables like...
Not certain these work for Network, or just Internet !??
The settings shown below are given in a good faith there is not at all any guarantee that it will work perfectly for you.
Lets give it a try and run the following commands from the command line:
    sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
    sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.mssdflt=1460
    sysctl -w kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=131070
    sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65535
    sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.recvspace=65535
    sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.newreno=1
A word on MTU or mssdflt...
Different Servers may have different MTUs, and that can cause Havoc, here's some guides on that issue...
Setting MTU size is a process of trial-and-error: start with the maximum value of 1500, then reduce the size until the problem goes away. Using one of these values is likely to solve problems caused by MTU size:
    • 1500. The largest Ethernet packet size; it is also the default value. This is the typical setting for non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. The default value for NETGEAR routers, adapters and switches.
    • 1492. The size PPPoE prefers.
    • 1472. Maximum size to use for pinging. (Bigger packets are fragmented.)
    • 1468. The size DHCP prefers.
    • 1460. Usable by AOL if you don't have large email attachments, etc.
    • 1430. The size VPN and PPTP prefer.
    • 1400. Maximum size for AOL DSL.
    • 576. Typical value to connect to dial-up ISPs.
Another way to change the MTU is by...
    sudo ifconfig en0 mtu 1460
Or whatever interface for en0, or different mtu value.
These will all be lost with a restart, but might help in diagnosing.
Starting to sound like some flakey HW with the week or so going good !???
