Interest in building a creative firmware commun

I bought myself a muvo Micro n200 a little while ago. Great little player - I'm really enjoying it. However, I've found a number of small things (mostly with the interface, but some H/W) that irk me. Looking at the forums - it looks like lot's of other people have found them too. I'm talking about things like:
- Shuffle mode repeatedly plays the same folders & track, while completely ignoring others.
- The backlight generates a hum whenever it's on
- Display only shows the title from ID3 - not the artist/album/anything else
- Lack of configurability of options
- Clumsy operating experiences (ie no concept of back/up-a-level)
- Limited mp3 encoding functionality
- etc
- etc
I use my player on average an hour a day - and everytime I do, I encounter something like the above, and think "I could fix that, if i had the source". The hardware is great, (except for the odd annoyance - ever tried opening the belt clip wide enough to clip it onto a belt, without hitting the play/pause/on/off button?). I think it's a brilliant little package, (and the keyword really is little)! You'll notice that my list above are all firmware issues. I find myself constantly disappointed that the software lets down to the degree that it does what could be such a great little unit.
I was wondering, how much of a community is there around the muvo n200 - If there was an opensource firmware project available, would there be much participation? I'm obviously interested in the n200 - but it could encompass other players also...
I see a number of options - if there is enough interest out there, I'll approach creative with a proposal. My ideas are, in order of preference (and probably reverse order of likelihood):
- Get a current snapshot of the code from creative, and some technical documentation. Start an OSS project on sourceforge with it.
- Get a snapshot of the current code from creative. Not be allowed to give/show anyone else the code, but be able to make changes and distribute my own firmware file (no warranty of course), and take feature requests etc.
- Get some technical documentation from Creative on the player. Start my own project from scratch, distribute via sourceforge.
- Get documentation from creative, be allowed to distribute a binary file.
Failing all that:
- Have creative fix all the problems in the firmware, and distribute a kickass update. :-)
If that last one happens - I will certainly sign up for alpha testing, field research, and the like!
This would benefit Creative no end - It would rapidly become a high quality alternati've firmware, but would be one they don't have to support: they can offer a (potentially - with post purchase flashing) even better product, with absolutly no loss or expence to them. It would also develop a large community and following - numerous previous similar cases have shown that people around the globe gel together on projects like this, and can have dramatic effects on the number of units shifted. There is an enourmous amout of userbase out there that would be looking for an mp3 player, and would buy this particular one for the one reason that they can play with the source, and compile their own firmware. Many more will be prompted to buy one, where they hadn't even been previously in the market! Just coz it sounds like so much darn fun! And further to that - people out there like to support companies that support user communities through projects like this - even if they don't buy an n200, they will make the association that creative is a good brand name, and seek out their products in other lines. I know i would. :-)
There's probably a downside to this for creative too - though i haven't figured it out yet. If you have any ideas as to why they shouldn't/couldn't - please post here. The most significant issue I can see involves trade secrets and such - but nothing an NDA couldn't deal with quite satisfactorily.

  • Creative Firmware Probl

This is a rant, and then I have a question.
    The Rant:
I've been visiting this forum for a while. Our family has three Zen Nano Pluses. I do not understand why the quality of Creative firmware is so low, and I'm asking if anyone understands what the company is trying to do. Gripes about firmware: ) The firmware can be quite difficult to update. The directions for a Nano update are quite incomplete. Just search this forum and you will find MANY people who have had extreme problems. 2) Why is the firmware so crappy? For example, I recently changed to version .2.03. It solved a backlight duration problem, but now the cue/review function can not be changed from "OFF". Why is it that Creative releases firmware that has not been tested? Or do they test it and release defecti've firmware anyway? They spend a LOT in terms of time and customer frustration and increasing negati've reputation of their company each time they release defecti've firmware. Surely it is best to release firmware that has been tested, and works? Or do the writers of Creative firmware just insure themselves of a job by continually playing with the software? Or is there something going on that I do not understand If so, please someone explain it to me.
    The Question:
Is there any version of Nano software that has all functions working?
Thanks, and good luck if you update your Nano firmware.

So, no one knows if any version of Nano software has all its functions working?

  • Creative firmware on a Dell DJ

I've got a Dell Dj 30 Gen 2 an in all that I've read, Dell DJs are Creative players with a Dell badge. It looks like Dell is getting out of the DJ players as they're only pushing the dittys and the DJ firmware hasn't been updated in a year.
I like the player pretty well; but, my major beef is that I can't view artists or albums under View by Genre. If you View by Genre all you get to do is View All Tracks, which for me, would list about 200 songs.
I searching this forum it I found some posts that elude to the creative players being able to "View Artists" and/or "View Albums" under a specific genre.
Would I be able to apply a creative firmware update to the Dell DJ?
    Thanks,

What can I do  ? Thank you very much!!!

I found this on stack overflow.com and thought it would apply to this article discussion for some users even though I don't understand how to revert the version (through git?)
I think this is a compatibility issue. I think the .xib has moved to Xcode 4 (as shown by the line setenv IBC_MINIMUM_COMPATIBILITY_VERSION 4.2) which Xcode 3.2's version of ibtooldoes not understand.
I think you need to revert to a version of the .xib prior to the update to Xcode 4.""

I'm using 10.6.4 and having the same issue. Reinstalled the newest SDK a few times (Xcode 3.2.4 with 4.1 of the iOS SDK). I can't build anything to run on the iPhone Simulator, but building regular Mac apps works fine. Here's what it tells me when I try to build and run:

  • Re-Building Library Failure/Firmware Problem on X

    Hello,
I am experiencing a serious problem with a Zen Xtra 60gb. Last night when my brother booted up his player it went straight into 're-building library', not a completely uncommon experience, I know. However, this prcess failed to complete and stuck around /3 of the way through before moving to a 'Firmware Problem' screen.
Having searched through various forums I tried a few tricks:
Firstly, of course, I reset the player with a pin.
I booted into recovery mode and tried a 'Clean-Up'. This strangely cleaned 400% of the player before completing.
I also tried removing the OS and replacing it again. It is the latest firmware version.
None of these things solved the problem.
Therefore I would be very much grateful for your advice as to solve the problem, hopefully without losing the data. If at all possible, I would much appreciate someone sending an earlier version of the firmware to see if that works (currently using .20.08 ).
Windows XP currently detects the player, but presumably none of my software will work without the Firmware installed, but if someone could maybe point a way to back up the data on the player in a current state, we'd be extremely grateful (yes, I know he should have done that already).
Of course I'll ring Customer Support first thing tomorrow, but I'd love to get this solved quickly for my little bro as he's spent quite a lot of time getting everything he wants on the player and makign playlists.
That was one long message, but I wanted all bases covered. Thanks in advance...

See "firmware problem" in the FAQ post.
If you've tried everything there and still get the error then the player is faulty and needs to be replaced. Contact Creative via the Support > Contact Customer Support link on this page.

  • Fixing the creative zen xtra - creative firmware won't bring me dow

    Hi all,
Recently my zen xtra crashed as a result of Creative's shoddy firmware! Anyway, I'm out of warrenty, creative want to try charge me about 20 quid and I ain't having that (read my other posts you'll hear the whole story)
Well now I've decided I'm gonna try fix things myself. I've ripped my player apart to reveal the 2.5" harddri've. I've got hold of a caddie to hold this in and connected to the computer. Dri've is not recognised (as i suspected, the firmware has corrupted toc and whathaveyou). So I'm formatting the dri've now, seems to be going ok (i'm thinking if I can't get the player working again at least I can make a 40gb external mini hard dri've)
Anyway, what I need now is to compare this hard dri've to another zen xtra one thats working and well. If anyone has (for some bizarre reason) backed up their zen dri've in this way cause you let me know. I need to know the file structure that it uses (as the software hides the real structure) and also the firmware (a working copy please!) that is as how it is installed rather than by using the installation software for the more conventional way :smileytongue:
Any help with that is appreciated, and those of you who are like me and have a ?200 paperweight should consider making it an external dri've like this also. (cheap caddies on ebay for those who want to know!)
    hope this helps
    phil

if i get a friend's zen xtra dri've and put it in mine, would you reckon it would work or am i likely to bugger up that too?
if the firmware is part in hardware then i doubt there's a lot i can do, but my intention was to copy my friend's dri've to mine then put it in and see if it works...
    any ideas?

  • System Build for Creative Suite Production 4

I am looking for feedback on this system I am researching to build for upgrading to Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium
    :(from Creative Suite 2 Premium)
All components will go into an Antec P180 ATX mid tower case
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Quad-Core Processor, 2.66 GHz, 12M L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB, LGA775
    Intel DX48BT2 Extreme Series X48 Desktop Board, ATX, DDR3 1600, 3xPCIe x16, 1600MHz FSB, LGA775, Retail Motherboard
    I will be using
Seagate Baracuda Sata 300 drive for my applications and another Sata drive for media storage with a plan to upgrade to Sata raid when I get into HD editing.
OCZ Platinum 4 gig DDR3 memory
Corsair 750 Tx 750 watt power supply
Initially I will have an Nvidia Quadro fx540 graphics card with plan to upgrade to Nvidia Quadro 1700 for HD, HDV editing
Running Windows XP professional for now
As you can see from my upgrade path I also have a question on use of CS2 for the upgrade.
    Thanks in advance
    James

The answer is the same as in your other thread: It will work, but it's not gonna be much fun. It's still a pretty weak processor and the intel graphics will very likely prevent hardware acceleration features in Photoshop (required for 3D) and InDesign (Flash encoding and interactive authoring) from working properly or at all.

  • Should I upgrade to Flash Builder from Creative Cloud ?

I'm using Flash Builder Standard 4.6 and Extension Builder 2.
Have just signed for Creative Cloud and need to know if installing the Flash Builder Premium from Creative Cloud will be a smooth process and I can continue working on my extensions without pulling out my hair
I believe the version in CC is 4.7 instead of 4.6, in this case what should I be aware of ?
    Thanks

Thanks for your answer, it seems it's still problematic and without design view .
Will stay with the old version.

  • Phonegap Build and Creative Cloud

    Hi,
I have a creative cloud full account and I was thinking to have 25 private apps to build with Phonegap Build from Dreamweaver as follows:
Unfortunately after compliling the package I receive a message as... "you exceeded the numbers of apps...". But I have only 2 apps on the Phonegap server. Any suggestions to solve the issue? Thanks, K.

    Hi Carey,
after updating Dreamweaver I solved the issue of the message but I have some other issues. After logging in to build my app I receive this usual message:
So I'm gonna click on "Continue":
This pane is quite different from the previous version (with all the QR platform codes) and is quite confusing for me. The "Continue" botton is active and that means (logically) I'm not obliged to fill the prevous fields. But when I click on it (and after a long time) I receive this message:
So this means there are some troubles on your side not on mine... But if I click the button I'm coming back to this pane:
Here the "Continue" botton is not active and this is a non-sense for me. I have to restart DW to "Try again" (and wait for an other long time). I tried to read the docs pages about the procedures on the phonegap build site but I did not find the way to solve this problem.
    My questions are:
    1. Have I to log into Phonegapbuild site and associate the keys-pass-files for iOS, Android and BB, BEFORE launching Dreamweaver?
    2. Am I obliged to fill all the forms or I can fill only the Android one (for example)?
    3. Is there a place I can easily understand (please don't let me jump to the developer Android page because I did not understand anything) how can I generate the key signing passwords and certificates from a Mac?
    4. Last and maybe funny consideration: the Apple Logo seems to be cut on the botton (on my DW copy :-)
    UPDATE:
After some attempts I got my app zipping the folder (realized with DW) and uploading it from the Phonegapbuild account. I still have troubles to do the same starting from DW.

  • ATT: Creative Firmware Engineering....Request for Last 10 Playlist Supp

I have just purchased the Zen Xtra 30gb. Very Nice. I like it a lot. Installed only the MS Explorer drivers on my PC and use the drag-n-drop. I listen to music as well as books. Please forgive if any of these requests are already featured on the player. If they are, I have not found them.
A feature that my RioVolt CD player has is a "Last 0 CD Memory". Where it returns to the last selection I was listening to on any of the last 0 CD's popped in the player. If the Zen could do this for the last 0 playlists, or something like that (user selectable on/off of course). It would be a real nice feature for those of us who jump around listening to different things while driving long stretches. Especially for long audiobooks that you want to take a break from now and again to hear music.
Oh, and hey, a charging craddle would be great too. Like my Palm Pilot had. It would be nice to drop it (gently of course) into a craddle at night instead of fumbling with wires every time I need to charge it. I may have to attempt to make one myself.
A feature to have the player switch to "Now Playing", say, 0 seconds after you've selected an album would be neeto, rather than staying on the album page for the entire album.
Lastly, before I forget, the Explorer drivers won't let me copy MP3's from another machine (via networking) directly into the player. That's a pain. Since my faster USB port is not on the same machine as my MP3's.
OK, I went into several requests. Ooopsy. Thanks for designing a really great and affordable player.

Thanks for replying. While I was half-hoping that my lengthy plea might have been the straw that broke the camel's back, I can't say I honestly expected AT&T to change their policy and suddenly start delivering more timely releases of firmware updates with greater transparency about the process. As for me, I only had a small window of time to return the handset to AT&T. Having heard nothing, I figured that the safest course of action was to buy a carrier-unlocked RM-985 from a reputable retailer. After it shows up tomorrow, I'll still have time to return the AT&T variant. With Windows Phone 10 arriving shortly, this should ensure that I get that upgrade at least a month or two before users with the AT&T branded device. I'll also be able to lower the monthly bill, so that's a big side benefit. It's unfortunate that this is how AT&T operates. I imagine that they get more than a few returns of the device from people who couldn't get Netflix working and this has to be costing them some money.  It certainly makes Windows Phone/Microsoft look bad as well, although they did ship the device with buggy firmware in the first place, even if they did provide a fix.  Supposedly with Windows 10, Microsoft will no longer be allowing carriers to block phone updates, so the situation should improve. M

Edited the subject line. Please keep your language clean when posting on this forum!
With regards to your question, if you need to get the player replaced, stay in contact with Customer Support as they will be able to arrange that for you. Just let them know that you have tried the tips they gave you and that they didn't work. They have to go over these steps as they resolve problems for many people.

  • Interesting findings BF2 and Creative Performance Iss

Now... dont get your hopes up but I was browsing on one of the BF2 forums.. not really looking for creative fix but saw a link to "Fix all your performance problems in BF2" So I figured what the heck..
    Found the URL here: http://www.forumplanet.com/planetbat...689&tid=704503
Which points you to the details here:
    http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopic...&postorder=asc
    To make it short...
These articles talk about the Audigy 2 stuttering, popping, etc. I have had this issue myself with the audigy two...
Anyway... they specifically talk about the EAX settings being an issue..specifically due to the use of generic OpenAL libraries.... What they found was that the version in the battlefield 2 directory BF2OpenAL.dll was a much older version then was is provided by Creative directly in the driver package. So I decided to do some research and see what was installed by the creative drivers and what was loading during run time of the game... What I found when the game is started is the BF2OpenAL.dll is loaded not what is in my system32 directory which are provided directly by Creative through the driver pack. You can use System Information / Loaded Modules to see this. The Version on BF2OpenAL.dll is version . the version in my Windows/System directory which the creative drivers installed is version 5.2.
This is what I found while BF2 is running in System Information:
BF2OpenAL Version . 228.00 KB (233,472 bytes) //2005 8:38 PM <EM>(Ignore date as the time stamp would have been updated when they rebuilt BF2 for SF which I just installed tonight)</EM> Creative Labs c:\program files\ea games\battlefield 2\bf2openal.dll
This is what I found in my WIn/Sys32 directory (Not being used when BF2 is running)
    Company: Creative Technology Ltd
    Version: 5.2.0.0442-.84.0020
    52 KB (55,648 bytes)
Now... the big question.. are these two drivers the same? And if not... why is BF2 using an older one? Is this an older one? Shouldn't Windows load what is in the system 32 directory over what is in a local directory of aprogram.
BIG Question... Does this fix your problem? How do you try? See second URL for details... It explains to backup the BF2OpenAL.dll copy the one from your Windows/System32 directory into your BF2 directory and name it to BF2OpenAl.dll.
This will force BF2 to use the version that creative provided in your drivers..
Since I am not havng anymore issues with my card... i figured would not mess with it..
But those of you that have issues... It wont hurt to try
    Please post results...

    mike,
your findings are not new. Browse this forum and you will see there has already been discussed on this one.
