Intermittent screen fault

My Ipod Nano 2nd Generation has the following problem. Screen seems to freeze and another screen can be seen behind the frozen one, other times the screen goes grey, or has black lines down it, some times it's fine and works for hours with no problem. Have tried soft & hard resets. Wiped the memory completely and put only 1 cd on still the same.
To try and describe is difficult but the ipod is rendered almost unuseable whenits playing up as you can't select the music you want.
This happens whether the ipod is docked in the Apple hi-fi or on earphones
Ipod is just out of warranty however Apple or Curry's won't help me, any thoughts apart from buying a new one?

My 2nd Gen Nano just began having an issue (also a couple months beyond the warranty) that sounds very similar that I am hoping to find a solution for besides just replacing it
here's where I am with mine:
this tuesday I synced it to my MBP before going to work. Syncing appeared to run as normal. following it finishing, I clicked to disconnect it thru iTunes. It appeared to disconnect from iTunes and from my desktop, but instead of the Nano screen going from saying "do not disconnect" to "ok to disconnect", the screen went grey (backlit) with a couple very thin horizontal darker lines 2/3 down the screen. I didn't think much of it, and removed it from the usb cord. I then noticed it was locked up. I re-connected it and detached again. It did the same thing again. Figured I would do a hard restart on the way to work, so grabbed it and got in the car. Before I did the hard restart, I plugged it into my Pioneer car stereo adaptor. The nano screen shows the Pioneer logo stuff as it always does, so figured it was back to normal. Then noticed it appeared there was no data on the ipod (thru the car stereo). Disconnected it and now the Pioneer screen with the original connection time was stuck on along with the back light (I had tossed it in my bag without paying attention, and when I got to work an hour later it was still on with the time shown when I originally plugged it in - as if frozen in time). I did a hard restart (top & center button) and when it came back on all seemed good again.
Then... next time I went to use it, the screen was backlit but had no graphics. You can hear the click wheel and it plays, but has no display. I did a hard restart again - and again it appears normal.
When I got home Tuesday night I tried to sync the Nano to my MBP again thinking whatever issue it was having may be corrected. No.
I then did a full restore thru iTunes. loaded stuff back onto it and hoped for the best.
The restore did not seem to make any difference, and it still will loose the screen graphics - and have them return to normal after a hard restore. Some times the screen will go out while it is being used - and almost always after it has sat unused for a while (couple hours).
Also yesterday (thursday), following syncing, I was getting an error saying the Nano was being used by another app and could not be disconnected. This was both thru iTunes and attempting to disconnect directly from the desktop.
I restarted the MBP, made sure I have the most recent Leopard updates and tried syncing again. No change. Also should add, the Nano also is up to date, 1.1.3 if I remember correctly (or was it 1.3.3?).
I have taken the Nano into my local Apple store - hoping there was something obvious I was overlooking that one of the staff sales guys would think of, but no luck (but you can get a 10% 'recycle' discount on a replacement).
I hope someone here has a suggestion/solution, besides having to keep doing hard resets - or buying a new one

  • Screen faults

    hi all,
I've noticed a couple, well three screen faults that are really starting to bug me on my iMac, and wondering how easy is it to get fixed?
As yet I don't have any snaps to show what I mean, but if you can imagine the top left and top right areas of the scree, there's what appears to be spotlights of light pointing down, and at the bottom centre, what can only be described as a "big dull area" it's really noticeable on light backgrounds, so word documents and bright photos really show this up.
I do have apple care so am wondering before I make a call to apple, how easy is this to be sorted and more importantly....can it be sorted?

  • Intermittent sound fault with keyboard clicks

    Hi there,
I have recently purchased an iPad2, and there seems to be an intermittent sound fault only involving the keyboard click sounds.
The sound works fine on music and other content and I have tried deselecting and reselecting the keyboard clicks on/off in the settings page, but to no avail.
    Do you have any suggestions?

If it happens intermittently, then I would think that it cannot be an incorrect setting, or having system sounds muted. Do you ever restart your iPad - or reboot it?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Macbook (Dec 2009) A1342 screen fault - intermittent - possibly cable fault?

    Hi folks.
My son's December 2009 MacBook Model: A1342 has an intermittent, but repeatable fault with the screen. Depending where the screen is positioned, the laptop screen doesn't refresh or turns pale.
This suggests that there is a bad or broken connection between the screen and the video output on the mother board.
Any suggestions other than to return it to an authorised Apple repair facility?
    Many thanks.
    Charlie.

Thanks Mike. Looks like fun taking the screen apart to replace the offending cable!
Would you happen to know what the part number is for the display data cable?
    Many thanks.
    Charlie.

  • My new (under contact to Optus in Australia) iphone 4 has a cracked screen with intermittent digitizer faults, can I just get a new front glass?

New to all this, purchesed a new iphone 4 as part of a contract to optus phones in Australia just 2 months ago, I have dropped it and cracked front screen, don't think this is a warrenty coverage so what can I do now? Confused as to wether I can buy just a new front glass screen or need to buy the digitizer as well? Looking for cheepest option as the phone only costs me $8 a month for two years.

Unless it the same repair process as the US, they will replace the whole phone itself at a cost.

  • My Apple G5 using operating system 10.6.8 keeps locking up. I get no warning or error message. I do get some intermittent screen distortion. Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how i get rid of this problem? Complete system re - install? N

My mac keeps locking up it s Power mac G5 Intel using 10.6.8 OS.X. I get no warning or error messages it just locks up and the only way to get it to work again is to depress power button and restart. Its random intermittent and incredibly frustrating. I do get some screen distortion from time to time and wondered whether it may be a graphics card issue or whether it could be solved with a complete system re-install and OS upgrade?

According to everymac.com, your Mac came with Tiger, 10.4.x and can't go any higher than Lion, 10.7.x.
It would have come with gray, machine specific disks. Since there's no reason to install 10.4.x first, and then Snow Leopard over that, just purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for $20. What you won't get with the retail version of SL is the iLife suite (Garage Band, iDVD, etc.) that were on the original bundled disks, but you can purchase iLife on Amazon pretty cheap, and get newer versions besides.
When you get Snow Leopard, you can boot to the DVD, erase the drive and install everything clean. Hopefully, you issue is only software, and not hardware related.

  • Intermittent USB fault on iMac 24"

Is there anything more annoying than an intermittent fault? For the last year or so I have had an issue with the functionality of my USB ports randomly disconnecting at any time. Could be 5 seconds, could be 4 minutes, could be 8 mins 34 seconds.... you get the point. The following things are affected:
External HD (new WD Passport with USB 3.0) (Randomly unmounts off desktop. Works fine on my Macbook Pro)
Internal iSight camera (In Skype & photobooth I randomly get the message 'camera unavailable or in use by another application' and it switches off)
USB keyboard (This happens very rarely and needs an unplug / replugin to work again)
    Curiouser and curiouser....
I have 2 WD passport older model external HDD which never do this and remain mounted always. Even when plugged in at the same time as the USB 3 HDD
iPhone / iPad / Card reader all work 100% fine and never eject unceremoniously.
    I have tried:
    Repair / verify disk permissions
Operating under a new user account
    Checking system profiler
And all the dumb stuff that Apple 'helpfully' suggests like 'check you cables are plugged in' etc etc.
    I am running Leopard 10.5.8
Anyone PLEASE have any idea why its doing this? I have taken it to 2 genius bars and brilliantly the computer behaves perfectly so no fault can be detected.
If I upgrade to Snow Leopard and then subsequently Lion could this fix it? Is it worth backing up everything on my older externall HDD and doing a clean restore to SL / Lion? Can the USB hardware be replaced without messing with the Logic Board? Could it be that some of the hardware is pulling too much power and its having a kernel panic?
    Heeeeellllppppp!!!!

The intermittent power problem you describe is probably linked to the logic board since that controls the main power for the computer. Software upgrades are unlikely to address the root of the issue because it is highly likely that it is a hardware issue. Did the Genius Bar visits include a Network Diagnostic? This is usually more thorough than the Apple Hardware Test available from the install disks and can reveal faulty circuits. Have the Genius Bar techs take a more involved approach to their investigation.  See what results before you look at follow-up steps.
The intermittent disconnects are not kernel panics; you will know when you get one since that puts your entire system out of commission.

  • Intermittent screen flash in dual monitor mode?

I've developed an interesting problem - A few months back there existed some fault with kde's treatment of the xf86-video-ati drivers which meant that, if you had compositing enabled, it would randomly segfault and die. This was slightly irritating.
So, recently, In an act of pure, stupid, and uninformed optimism, I decided to see what would happen if I just asked pacman to upgrade me to the latest version of kde (In case the problem from before has been fixed - for comedic effect).
This went predictably badly, although the fault in question does appear to have been fixed. However, as part of it's dependencies the new kde brought in new ATI drivers, and somewhere along the way an entirely new and exciting fault that causes my secondary monitor's image to flash to black for about 1 second in 7 has been picked up.
From my own investigating/googling so far, I've determined this is something to do with KMS and my display drivers. The flashing persists even in text mode, but only affects the secondary screen (The other one works fine). If I add nomodeset to my grub kernel boot line then the flashing ceases in text mode, but Xorg segfaults when I try and start it.
Has anyone else encountered this particular fault? Any advice on how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Thanks for working that out, but I'm still horribly confused. I've been tinkering with things today to improve my boot speed (new kernel, messing with module loading and so on), and the problem seems to have gone away by itself. I have at no stage had anything to do with upower (it hasn't been installed).
    How perplexing.
Anyway, problem solved, thanks everyone, and well done Sayo for working out the problem! (Even if it appears that MY problem was unrelated )

  • Intermittent Screen Layout Problem

I have an intermittent problem, so far reported by only a few users on Win XP and Mac systems.  Basically, I have a bunch of components inside a VBox, and the VBox is inside a WindowedApplication.  What's happening is that for just these few people, the VBox doesn't fill the window (it's height and width are set to 100%).  No clue why that is happening, or even what to play with to try to fix it.  I can't duplicate it on my machine and the app is huge, so I can't give you code, I need some things to try.
One thing I did try after reading through the forums was adding this line to the window:
    addedToStage="event.currentTarget.stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.SHOW_ALL"
That actually causes a similar behavior where the VBox doesn't fill the window.  May or may not be related, but I thought I'd mention it.
Here is a screen shot of what goes on:
The app is in Beta and can be downloaded here by registering:
    http://www.cnccookbook.com/CCGWizardE.html
There are various screen shots of what it's supposed to look like there too.
    Any thoughts appreciated.
    Best,
    BW

    Hi Bob,
I'm sorry I didn't notice this post before.  If you're still encountering problems, would you mind adding a new bug over at bugbase.adobe.com?  Please include your app and sample code so we can reproduce the issue internally.  If you'd like to keep this private, feel free to email any attachments to [email protected] and I'll link them for internal use only.
    Thanks,

  • Intermittent screen distortion - entire screen washed out

Intermittently, my entire screen will go a yellow/orangy type color - i can still make out the screen contents, but everything is slightly distorted or blurry and hard to make out.
Most times, it goes away after a minute or two, or repeated restarts will also fix it most of the time. No amount of adjusting or resetting the Display System Preferences seems to help.
There seems to be no predictability when this anomaly will occur, but it happens fairly frequently.
I took it to the Apple Genius and he did hardware and video test but could find nothing wrong.
    Any ideas?
    TIA

If you do not yet have a temperature monitoring utility, you may wish to get one, like this free Dashboard widget:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
If the video effects only show up when the temps are high, they may not show up in the short time the computer was with the Genius Bar.
Use System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac > More info) and click "displays" in the left pane. See what video chipset is installed. Some nVidea 8600GT chipsets have failed, necessitating a logic board replacement. The replacement is covered under a Repair Extension Program if the computer is less than two years old. • Two years of intermittent broadband faults

After two years of intermitent faults countless calls to Bt, 3 engineer visits , all engineers agree i have intermittent fault. Today the engineer visited and said he thought he may have found a problem and said it would be all good, LOL NOW I HAVE NO PHONE LINE .
TWENTY YEARS PLUS customer with Bt but will never recomend them again until i have somthing to recomend .

OK, so this is a community forum, where we can all vent and propose our own suggestions to other BT customers with similar problems.
Its quite funny how we are all technical support these days, often knowing a good deal more than the customer care people we are dealing with, but lacking any access to get the problems resolved.  Customer Care seems to be a barrier to that access, rather than the gateway.
Anyway, my point is that when I had a plain 1Mbps Broadband Service, it was better than now.  Pages loaded a little slower, but it was RELIABLE.   Then WiFi got all complicated, and I struggle to get a strong signal just metres from my hub.  Simply walk to another room or round the corner and you lose 75% of the signal - it really seems to be line of sight these days.
Now I have 5Mbps to the Hub - luxury, except that the uplink back to the exchange is slower than a dial-up modem at <100kbs.   I am lucky if I re-boot the hub to get 400kbps uplink, but then it drops every HOUR.
This lack of reliability is worse than the slower link.
I am awaiting an engineer to 'check my external wiring' which has not changed in 10 years.  This was after having the riot act read to me about being charged if they can somehow make it my fault instead.
I had been having problems with the Hub2 being very poor and unable to handle Port Forwarding or DHCP tables, and it took 2 years to get a replacement Hub (v4).  Definitely quicker interface and smarter hub, but the link has been bouncing about all over the place for weeks now.
On the plus side, the call to 150 on the phone got me to a real Customer Care person within a few minutes, and they stayed on the call and they escalated it.  First time for 5 years I think.  The uplink was SOO bad the online chat stood no chance.
    Lets see what happens.

  • Intermittent Line Fault in windy and wet weather

    Hello,
I have been experiencing an intermittent fault with my phone line since getting BT Broadband in November 2013, which at first I believed to be a broadband issue. It started with the home hub disconnecting, flashing orange and then reconnecting.  After a few more weeks and performing tests through the test socket with various different ADSL plugs I noticed that the fault was happening when the weather was poor outside (wet/windy). We were sent out a Broadband Engineer who could not find the fault, he changed the faceplate of the Master Socket to a MK2 who said it would stop interference from the weather.
A couple of days later the weather was bad again and the fault continued to happen every time the weather was windy. For another month or so over Christmas and January we put up with the issue as the threat of the £130 call out charge is too much for us, my girlfriend and I are mature students so we can't afford that if our fault doesn't show when an engineer turns up.
I have been performing Quiet Line Tests through the test socket when the issue is happening and have experienced noise, popping and even multiple disconnections on the line. This week I finally got annoyed enough to book an engineer  and reported a Line Fault and miraculously managed to get one for the next morning (Thursday 6/2/14).
The engineer turned up and I explained the Intermittent fault to him and the noisy line affected by the weather but of course the weather that day was fairly calm. He performed his tests and said he couldn't find any fault and mentioned something about High Resistance?. He was nice enough to call up another engineer with a bucket crane so he could look at the telegraph pole. He told me he found that a joint up there snapped off in his hand and was probably the cause so they replaced it. They also found another piece of equipment on the exterior line (it looks like a black plastic sausage?) that was full of water so he emptied it and closed it up again.
For the first 23 hours the connection had held since the visit but then started disconnecting again and I'm experiencing the same issues as before with the current bad weather we are having even if it is only slightly windy.
So I am at a loss of what to do now. As the last engineer did all the tests as well as check the cable from the pole to the master socket I feel like I will be stuck with this issue for as long as I stay at this property. I cant afford the call out charge if the next engineer finds no fault. My personal opinion is that the line from Master Socket to the pole needs replacing as its possibly getting wet and or is corroded and the rain and wind make it worse but of course I’m no expert.
I should also mention that when the weather is clear outside the phone line and broadband works absolutely fine.
My setup is a BT Home Hub 4 (Type A)  and a phone which are both connected straight to the MK2 Master Socket which is located under our window (It is the only Master Socket in the property). On the exterior of the building the phone line goes up to the roof and along the side and out to the telegraph pole which is probably no more than 10 metres away.
Here is the noise margin and bandwidth results after a disconnection yesterday :

(81541.820000) CWMP: session closed due to error: Could not resolve host
    Bandwidth:
    1163 / 16568
I'm not sure if these are the stats that are needed so please advise.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I've had very similar in the past, from what I remember it took maybe 5 engineer visists. Each one plugged the test kit into the master socket, scratched his head, went to the exchange, came back & scratched his head a little more.
The last one that turned up happened to arrive on a fairly bad day weather wise - that's when he noticed that the pole must have been hit by lightening at some point, and had burnt the wiring on the inside of the hollow pole we had. Burnt wiring inside the pole while it's being blown around by the wind was causing a short.
Was a 20min ish job to run a new line from the pole to the house & then it was all sorted permanently.
Your issue may be different, but it really is a matter of getting feet on the ground while the fault is happening unfortunately.
