Intermittent slowness and disconnects

My Verizon DSL connection has been intermittently slow with random disconnects for the past 2 weeks. Unplugging/replugging the modem doesn't fix it. I'm in Pittsburgh using a Westell 7500. Any help?

DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 5013     861

Transmit Power (dBm) 0.0       12.8

Your line looks to be pretty long to be using 5Mbps service on it. I think your disconnects may be from copper that is experiencing changes in how it is able to carry the DSL signal due to the changing weather. Perhaps the copper cabling is also deteriorating as it is exposed to the elements. Either way, we need to rule out some things first before deciding on a course of action.
Right now, your modem's margin is low, the downstream speed is not synced up correctly, and the attenuation is high. In addition, transmit powers are not reported but can be assumed, which also suggest a lenghty or degraded line as well as the equipment attempts to compensate for the speed.
If you have access to your NID, I'd like for you to plug your modem into it first to see if we can pull better statistics from the line. If they are much improved, we'll need to start troubleshooting where in the home the copper is giving issues. If there is no change, the next course of action would be to get Verizon out to repair the line on their end of things to try and improve the signal coming in. If they really cannot do anything, then I believe the line will require a bumping down in speed to 4Mbps/768kbps after overhead, instead of trying to aim for a full 5Mbps.
If the slow speed issues are not from the poor line stats, please give us some information on what is taking place when the speeds are reduced. Is it during the evening or night time hours when this occurs? Is there any particular usage pattern in your home that could be perhaps causing this issue? How about your modem sync speeds? Traceroutes?

    Hi Scott.
There is a problem - but Apple have not acknowledged it. Many people on these forums are experiencing the same issue.
To get something done, you should report it here. The more of us that tell Apple about it, the more likely they are to fix it. You could also send a short email headed 'Apple TV update problems' to

  • New Macbook Air i5 wireless is very slow and disconnect again and again. Any one has the same issue or some help??

I recently bought a new 13 inch Macbook air and wireless internet is really slow and disconnect again and again. However I hav another windows laptop at the same place and that never disconects or looses signals? wireless on this mac is too slow that I cannot even use to make a skype call. I am new mac user and getting a bit disappointed because of this bad performance.I googled about this issue and found that lot of people are having the same issue with macbook air. I switched off the bluetooth adaptor but still no progress. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I am experiencing something similar with my MBA 13"/i5/256GB.
To take it one step further, I started up a Terminal session and ran a ping against my wireless router. I see the same pattern repeated over and over: I get about 5 or 6 pings through, then 4 or 5 misses, then it reconnects again. When it reconnects, the first ping or two have times in thousands of milliseconds, where normal is maybe sub-millisecond to 4ms for the remaining few seconds.
I have other wireless devices, including iPhone, iPad, and an older MacBook - all work fine. The MBA is the only Lion device.

  • BB really slow and disconnection problems. Prepari...

    Hi all
I've been having recent problems with my BB connection which resulted in a visit from an engineer last week. The engineer checked the master box and found no issues. He advised that I replace the cable connecting the hub to the master box as he thought it could be damaged and leading to the problem.
I've replaced the cable and microfilters throughout, reset the hub, moved the hub, tried wired and wireless connection, changed channels but I'm still getting really poor speeds and disconnections and its become totally unusable. I cant obtain a result from the BTspeedtest application as it continually says an error has occurred during the test (when I can get online at all).
If I can get online when I get home I'll post up my exact hub stats. From memory the hub has remained connected for around 50hrs and the speeds are upstream 480kbps downstream 438kbps.
Finally, in readiness for the 2nd engineer on Friday is there anything I should do, for example should I connect the hub to the test port on the master socket?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Ok folks,
after removing the hub from the main BT socket (NTE5?) and connecting the hub directly to the test port I get an immediate improvement in download speeds. Stats below.
What should my next course of action be, does that mean the socket is faulty or is something off somewhere else?
BTspeedtest still shows the following error when I attempt a speedtest
The Performance Tester could not perform Assured Rate throughput test , Please try again later.

  • 10.4.x clients reporting slow and disconnected afp connections from 10.5.4

I have a Leopard server serving a small group of users. Most of the clients are on 10.4 (there may be one on 10.3.9). I have one guy on 10.5.5. The guy on Leopard has not had any issues since he has been on Leopard.
The 10.4 users seem to be experiencing sporadic slowness throughout the day, and sometimes disconnects from the AFP shares. I have not seen anything going on with the server during the times this happens. I even moved a small backup database backup job to run at night rather than during the day. This didn't seem to have any affect.
The data the users are accessing is on a fiber attached raid array. Thought I'd throw that in if it would be of any help.
I am trying the suggestion for tuning afp on Tiger clients by changing the afpwanquantum preference on one of the clients, but I'm thinking that this is not the cause.
Has anyone experienced this? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Chiming in with another me too! When we noticed it never happens on leopard clients we stepped up our leopard roll out! so far still no leopard client problems.
We had a workround that we deployed multiple times a day which was to 'shake off' the server with an IP change . To expand:
If a client was suspected of having what we called the 'slow homes' issue we checked it out by copying a small 1MB file from the home to the clients local disk. when it wasn't instant - and sometimes it took a loooooong time and tied up finder for a while - then that was proof +ve.
workround was to change the IP address of the client. now we have a DHCP environment (MS-infrastructure of course), so how we did that was
1 - "DHCP with manual address" and assign a known free address (around .150 in that VLAN usually)
2 - find an unused 'sacrificial client' in the same VLAN and set it to "DHCP with manual address" and the original client's address - effectively squatting/occupying that spot from the DHCP-server's PoV
3 - return the original client to plain DHCP and wait for a new address to be assigned.
4 - wait for the mac to sort itself out and do the 1MB copy test. much faster? then sorted
5 - return the sacrificial client to DHCP too
hope this helps someone out there.

  • UWL slow and disconnects from backend

    Hi  guys,
The UWL is sometimes slow, it takes awhile to load the workflow items but after a portal bounce it is fine for awhile, the portal itself is fast it is just UWL. It sometimes tells you there are no items to retrieve, even if there are and if you look at the connection statuses of the connectors some fail and you can go to the UWL admin screen and reregister then, it does help sometimes but not always, the connectors show a failed status on the "actioninbox" and "adhocsystem" connectors as well, a deactivate/activate them doesn't help only a portal bounce.
Any assistance will be much appreciated!
    We are on 2004s portal 7 sp12
    Thanks
    Theo

    Hi,
you cannot use tcode RMPS_SET_SUBSTITUTE from backend when using UWL?
From what I can see, they both update table hrus_d2. But there may be other implications that I do not see?
I think if you use tcode in backend for substituatiion, user should do in backend only and it may not be available in portal. If you do substitution directly in portal,it will reflect  correctly in both portal and backend,
You can try both options with tes workflow and see difference.

  • Slow and 'sticking' internet after move to 10.6

More or less after a recent upgrade from 10.5.x to 10.6.4, I have an intermittently slow and 'stuck' internet connection.
I connect to the internet via ethernet to a Netgear WGR614v5 router and thence to a Virgin Media cable modem.
What generally happens now is: open browser; first couple of sites connect fine; third site, Safari's progress bar 'sticks' part way across and the status bar stays on "contacting xxx.com". I then tear out what's left of my hair and have to wait a while before the process starts again.
    Please help!

hi folks ~ sorry for cross posting but I noticed this thread after the fact..
I am glad you are having similar issues...
    When behind a NATing firewall (openSuseLinux 11.2 routerfirewall in CLASS C config) and using static-IP, my mac-mini can not access the internet. But when connected directly to the internet cable - it works fine with my ISP's staticIP and DNS options... {it appears to me that the SnowLeopard server seems to not like being a passive HomeLAN IP client... }
.. I doubt that per se there's a problem with my linux router/firewall...I've been using it reliably for other devices.. could it be SL doing something 'special'?

  • Bt infinity 2 slow speeds and disconnection

hi all hi all after having spent over two hours on the phone with BT being passed from post to post from billing to technical support back to billing people slamming phones down on me and no  help what so ever today 22/05/2014 have been with bt over 5 years phone  line the broadband and all services
    it a joke now
2012 I have had fibre optic broadband service with BT and all was ok till November 2013 when start have slow speeds and in January year 2014 started having disconnections reconnection connections form 5 mins to to 60mnis or sum times 2mins  of the broadbands and the connections sometimes 3 to 4  times a day disconnections and so on .... when was supposed to be fixed the upload speed was very slow and the download speed was okay when I first started with BT with the fibre-optic broadband two years ago nearly I was averaging about 42 meg per day and average speed of upload was 6.5 Mag
but now 32.meg dowm /up is 3.5 Rwent off in February he did a shift in lift because the broadband was 42 meg download bought lacked upload speed of less than half meg for the day of the lift it ran at 52 meg  with an average upload speed of about seven meg from around February till the end of February then stat act erratically reboot the bt hub 4 rebooting all time DSL light off on the main openreach modem in one day was off and on 36 times
had  engineers visit last week 14th of May to test line all was ok with line but i had now found out that bt they'll are now only selling me option one broadband fibre-optic even though I am paying for option two they now states that the speed on my line will never go above 36 meg so why am I paying for option 2 fibre-optici be through to the billing department today said yes you are an option 2 but  the technical department to say my line will only support 36 meg and I did find out from the engineer that I am on option one and only for the supply of the broadband line but have been pay for BT infinity option2
I think this is just an easy way for BT to get out of fixing the mind correctly by downgrading the line but wanting the customer to carry on paying for option to have tried with billing to sort this problem out today they just said you need to speak to technical support technical support what support manages to say you need to speak to billing one of them even slammed the phone on me
No customer support spent over two hours on the phone today and got nowhere and one department saying we can downgrade you to option one broadband but it will cost you £30 to do so
who i speak to if billing are no help at all ??????

  • Login intermittently slow with ZCM agent AND Novell client

We continue to struggle with intermittently slow logins in our environment. In testing, we noticed that logins are very fast (10-20 seconds) when only the Novell Client is installed, and very fast (~10 seconds) when only the ZCM agent is installed. However, when they are both installed, logins slow down, sometimes to 1.5 minutes or longer.
We have checked DNS and rDNS, and they are both configured properly. SLP is working properly as demonstrated by the fast logins when only the client is installed. We use LDAP for user lookup, and it also works very fast to resolve user names (~ 1 second).
We are using ZCM 10.3.1, and the client is fully patched as well (both Novell Client 2 and 4.91)
Are there any specific settings (for the ZCM agent or the client itself) that might address this issue?

My apologies, I told you to remove the wrong thing.
I should have said NMAS instead of CASA.
I am just so used to saying CASA when talking about ZCM.
In regards to NMAS, you could simply rename "NWSSO.DLL" as a test.
If NMAS is installed which is tested by the existence of this DLL, then
a certain NMAS call is always made, which in some cases can take a long
    time.

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works
    Any ideas, solutions?

I got my new W540 a couple of weeks ago. installed Windows 8.1. Ran system update , windows update.Everything went fine except for the Ethernet adapter that keeps giving me hard time. wired connection is slow and intermittent. whan i satrt a ping to the gateway, I get many timeouts though ethernet status is showing "connected". wireless works great and also if I use an Ethernet USB adapter evrything is fine. So I came to the conclusion that I might have a hardware problem and the Ethernet adapter is simply defect. Did anyone have the same problem. Any suggestions.
    Thanks.

Hmm, might be a terminology problem..
I thought you meant: "list one of each make/model/type, discard duplicates".
When you say "Ethernet adaptor", what do you mean - the wired interfaces? Physical (not virtual, tunnel)?
    Not WWAN?
Ethernet is actually a very broad term...

I installed Yosemite and since then the system has been running slow.  I chose to use FileVault and it says it's encrypting but keeps saying estimating time remaining.  I've tried repair permission and restarting my computer.  Saw some other threads with similar problem and ran diskutil cs list which showed 80% the first time and now says failed.  I also did an Entre Check and here are the results.
    Problem description:

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

Hello i have and imac G5 i bought it in about june of 2005...
It was running very slow and always freezing and then i upgraded the RAM to 1gb
and it started working much better. then i upgraded to OS Leopard andalso pro tools LE 7.4
and since then has been performing slow and freezing all the time. ai recently added another gig of RAM just to see if that was the problem , but it seems to be working just as slow. Does anybody know what it might be. Its a 1.6 GHZ power PC G5 and has a 80GB HD and have about 20 GB free so i dont think thats it. Please let me know if any of you have had this problem or know how to fix it thanks

Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer.
Repair your disk from your System DVD.
Repairing permissions from the Tiger or Leopard DVD
Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.
    ===============
    Get a larger HD
    ===============
Use Software Update to update your OS to OS 10.5.6.
Afterwards, repair permissions & restart your computer.
Your system info confirms you are still using an outdated version - OS 10.5.4.

  • IMac is very slow and sluggish, keeps churning when editing files or on internet

My iMac is running slow and sluggish, it takes several minutes to edit a word document or search the internet ... intermittently it runs great but productivity is near zero when to edit a sentence in a Word document takes several minutes.  When typing an email the cursor stops and if you keep typing it eventually fills in what was typed even though you can't see it when typing. Ran Etrecheck ... report is attached.
