Internet link down

Forgive my noobness.. I've been surfing the net for a couple years on my G5 w/ no trouble and suddenly every search engine immediately reports no connection. I have a cable modem and router that serves my mac and a pc also. The pc internet works fine so it's not the ISP. Changed router ports, changed ethernet cable, bypassed router direct into modem, link light lit on router and pc light on modem when I plug in. Checked pref setting ok. Can't find any CD w/ hardware test. What can I do short of dragging it to the local macspert repair?

I've just had exactly the same problem as you - even had the ISP engineer out until I realised that my Mac Pro can connect fine (I'm writing this with it!).
I've posted full details in this thread:

  • Cisco 1841 with PPP Internet link down

    Hi brothers, please help.
We have Cisco 1841 with ATM card connect to Internet . Some days one Dialer interface of  ISP is down and only restart router to get Dialer interface up again. I check debug PPP negotiation & see that no inbound packets from ISP.
I really need to fix this issue permanently, not need to restart router to recover Internet.
    Thanks!
All line protocol from ATM0/0/0 & Dialer interfaces are up, but Dialer interface cannot get allocated IP addresses.

    Hello ,
As line comes up after reloading the device this does not looks like configuration issue but hardware .
Either connection between ATM card and modem is getting idle or some issue with ATM card .
Did you try replacing ATM card with a spare one to see if issue persists .

I just downloaded iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 and now can no longer open internet links that were texted to me.  Anyone else having the same problem or know how to fix this?

The SMS links thing is highly annoying. You don't have to copy/paste however. You should see an icon like this: (>) to the right of the text bubble with the link. Tap on that, the in the screen that opens, tap "Visit".
Alternatively, you can tap twice directly on the link, then hold your finger down after the second tap.
Still unnecessarily difficult, but not as bad as copy/paste.
What I don't get is why can't I find any mention of this change or how to fix it (if even possible) elsewhere online?

  • Modem router link down in a small network when I connect any mac with OSX

With OS9 I have no problems at all the other machines are PCs, I try whith 2 diferent laptops, and 2 macmini and the internet connection throught a modem router link down inmediatly... and the modem try to connect many times automaticly, and connect for few minutes... after that being link down again... any ideas what the problem is? I think a protocol interference may cause this, but I don't know what really... thanks

Start by changing the wireless names to SMB compatible names.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Make sure the HP is in range of the router.
You can use the WPS setup via the utility main menu. There is no WPS button as such but apple has had to provide some way to handle this directly.

  • DMVPN Spoke with 2 internet link

    Hi All,
I am stuck in a situation where we have 2 hubs one in HQ and one in DR site. Both hubs are configured to have different dmvpn cloud. We have some branches with two internet links one adsl and another 3G.
I want to setup dmvpn in such a way so that if adsl goes down then dmvpn tuneel should come up via 3G.
What I know is i would require different tunnels on spoke for achieving this. Currently on each spoke I have two tunnels one terminates on HQ and another terminates on DR and both are live. I am managing routes via eigrp.
My question is that do I need to create another dmvpn cloud for this to work as I can not use same subnet IP on new tunnels which will be having 3G as source ? or shall I create new subnet for tunnels which will work over 3G ??
if i create new tunnel for 3G network then what will be the configuration on HQ & DR as we have only on internet link on DR & HO.
can anybody help me on this ?
just need idea how to achive it. my full dmvpn is working over internet no private mpls....

    Hi Jain,
You can let HQ and DR in same DMVPN Cloud. In HQ, do Static NHRP MAP to DR and vise versa.
Spoke routers, create two static NHRP Map and NHS.
    Tunnel0
    description Spoke
    ip nhrp map multicast HQ-WAN-IP
    ip nhrp map HQ-Tunnel-IP HQ-WAN-IP
    ip nhrp map multicast DR-WAN-IP
    ip nhrp map DR-Tunnel-IP DR-WAN-IP
    ip nhrp network-id 123
    ip nhrp holdtime 60
    ip nhrp nhs HQ-Tunnel-IP
    ip nhrp nhs DR-Tunnel-IP
This will allow you use one DMVPN cloud for two Hub.
Secondly, for spoke failover to 3G, you would need to create another DMVPN Tunnel at HUB and SPOKE router
At HUB, use different Tunnel IP, but tunnel source will be same. In order this to work, i will suggest you to use DMVPN over IPSec. Use Diffrent tunnel key and ip nhrp network-id for both tunnel interface. Use "shared" command when apply ipsec policy in Tunnel interface.
Sample config at Hub( I only show the difference in Tunnel config)
    tunne0
    description ***Primary Tunnel***
    ip address x.x.x.x
    ip nhrp network-id 1
    tunnel key 1
tunnel protection ipsec profile TN-DMVPN shared
    tunne1
    description ***Primary Tunnel***
    ip address y.y.y.y
    ip nhrp network-id 2
    tunnel key 2
tunnel protection ipsec profile TN-DMVPN shared
At Spoke, you configure same as primary tunnel, but make sure to change network-id and tunnel key. Here, you may no need to use "shared" command when apply ipsec policy
    Hope this helps.

    Nagis

  • Can you still work  when the internet goes down?

Since internet service in this country is pretty unreliable, will that make it difficult to get work done when internet is down? Where I live, high speed internet isn't even available, so will I even be able to use Photoshop at all? Should I just find an alternative app?

Your Creative Cloud desktop applications (such as Photoshop and Illustrator) are installed directly on your computer, so you won't need an ongoing Internet connection to use them on a daily basis.
You will need to be online when you install and license your software. If you have an annual membership, you'll be asked to connect to the web to validate your software licenses every 30 days.

  • Time Capsule disappears when Internet is down....

My TC is setup on a network, so I have my own little mac-world piggybacked on my office building's network (PC based). It's been trouble free, until today when internet access has been interrupted.
The TC has now gone "stupid" in that I can't even find it now w/the Airport Utility. Green light is on. I even turned it off & on again (unplugged & re-plugged).
Seems like I should at least be able to access the hard drive wirelessly w/o it being hooked up to it's portal to the internet. Why does there need to be internet access to use it for wireless backup & hard drive use when the internet is down? The Office's network is working fine. What's up? Any suggestions? (I'm using my CDX card to access internet - always a contingency!)
Please don't write to tell me to hook up to it w/hard wire. TC should be accessible w/o internet access as a hard drive, at least. Not to mention the crawling around digging up hidden wires. I hope there's not a cybersnooping issue, here.
    Whatssup, Apple?

Routing is being messed up by the VPN or the DNS is not working properly.. either of which amount to the same thing.
Mount the TC in finder using its IP.
    Go, Connect to server.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (or whatever IP you have). The complex bit is you are going to need dhcp reservation on the main router to stop the TC from bouncing around its IP address.
Set that in your Asus main router.. but test it immediately before worrying too much.. if you get it mounted in Finder by IP address.. you can also discover it in Airport utility by using its IP directly..
You simply need to manually control things.. type in the IP to help it out.
Also don't forget the ipv6 setup to link-local only on the wireless/ethernet on the computer..
    Tell me how this goes.
Once you have the TC mounted in Finder.. have another go with TM.. if it still has issues.. change the name of the TC, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. see if that helps.
BTW the windows method of fixing this would be simply edit the hosts file..
Looking it up there is a Mac equivalent.
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-edit-the-mac-os-x-hosts-file-and-why-you-mig ht-want-to/
Of course it is essential that the TC does not change IP.. so fix that in the asus as I said and make sure if you shut down and restart the TC it does actually pick up the IP.. you can also try using static IP on the TC as an alternative to bridge this actually works well but is a little more involved to setup..
See. Re: airport time capsule keeps disconnecting

  • Ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox although my mac switches to the firefox window as this is my default browser- what to do? Previously this has always worked without a hitch...

ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox athough my mac switches to the firefox window as i have this set to be my default browser- what should i do?

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • Touch screen not working with internet link in safari

    Anyone has the same problem?
After 1.1.1 update, my touch screen occassionally fails to respond any tap on internet links in safari. no matter which web site you go to, no link will work on tap.
I tried to clean catch, cookies, etc. The only way to out of it is to reset the phone (both key pressed).
It happens about once or twice a day, not often enough for Apple people to duplicate it, but enough to bother me.

I have had the same exact problem occur 3 or 4 times since the update. I fix it by turning the phone off and on again.

  • Internet "SLOOOOOW DOWN"

I have a new Imac with 10.5.5 (Lepord) and web pages take forever to load. The Mac is on a domain but NOT "joined" to the domain. The Mac gets it ip from a DCHP server that is also a DNS server. The correct order of DNS servers, from internet to external show up fine on the Mac, even ntlookup on the Mac is responsive, takes about 1-2 seconds on the results of ntlookup on yahoo. However webpages take forever to load using Safari and Firefix. Once I connect to Speakeasy the download test results are normal and upload is normal too, but pages themselves take forever to load. The home page has taken upto 45 seconds to load. Simple sites like nba.com take 40 or so seconds to load.
What is odd is, when I run VMFusion with Windows XP pro, on the same Imac IE has no problem at all. Webpages load just fine, no slow down.
The primary connection is wireless, using G speed, WPA. However I have tried adjustments, tried N speed, wired lan, by passing switch, using another switch, etc..same problem. MAC OS internet slow down, XP using VM normal.
    Any suggestions?

When I was in the market for a cordless phone, I read up about 802.11g and decided to avoid getting any 2.4 GHz phones. (At the time I didn't own a wireless router.) This should be fine for most cases, but since I live in a condominium,
there's no guarantee our neighbor would take the same precautions.
I've noticed signal droppage when the microwave is running as well. If the connection needs to be pretty reliable, I would recommend just using Ethernet.

  • Occasional problem with eth0 link down after booting

    Hi,
Every so often after booting up the PC there is not any working network connection. Looking through the output of dmesg, I find "eth0 link down" messages. Not knowing a lot about networking lead me to resort to rebooting to resolve the problem, and rebooting does indeed resolve the problem. Today I discovered the post at  [url http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117728] which suggests similar behaviour.
I played around with ifconfig and initially thought I was seeing the same behaviour, but believe I was mistaken. I can't actually confirm until it happens if my new found knowledge will actually resolve the problem without rebooting.
I'd like to try and track down the source of the problem, and either file a bug report or take some other (configuration) measure, but need help tracing it.
Hardware in question is: Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
and I'm using the testing repository in Arch. Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    James.

I have the exact same problem and I have the exact same ethernet controller/chip.
I've not looked that much why it was doing this. Maybe auto-negotiation fail for I don't know which reason, maybe something else, hard to tell. I might try to investigate this a bit more next time it does me this.
That said, what I'm doing when I'm seeing that my eth0 has no carrier, I'm doing a "ip link set eth0 down", wait a few seconds, and then a "ip link set eth0 up", and then it's usually fine. Since I'm personally using static IP addresses, I also have to re-add the default route after that, i.e. a "ip route add default via 192.168.1.1" to be able to go out of my LAN again. This will be different if you are using DHCP.
