Invisible folder for library?

I have my iphoto library on an external harddrive. However the other day I had unplugged the external drive and when I launched Iphoto, it loaded my entire library. I control-clicked on a photo and chose 'show file'. A finder window opened and it showed what appear to be some sort of an invisible folder on my internal harddrive called 'VOLUMES' then there is a subfolder that has the same name as my external harddrive.. its as if iphoto has copied everything to a local location.. I want to find it and change the setting so this no longer happens.. I only want my photos on the external drive... but when I try to find this local directory or when i search for any photo names, I get zero search results.. wierd.. so again the entire library loads w/o my external harddrive being connected, but I can actually find where the photos are loading from..??
Is anyone familiar with what is happening here and what i need to do?
Thanks!

The /Volumes folder is how Apple implemented what is called a "mount point" in Unix. When you connect an external device (network, or a real disk drive) to your computer, Mac OS "automounts" it to the /Volumes folder. In this way, your newly connected device is in the folder "tree" of your file system, so you can access it just like it was part of your hard drive. In practice, most Mac OS users never use the /Volumes folder directly, though. Programs use it to access data on other devices, while sheltering you from the Unix specifics.
You have access to it through the user interface in the upper left corner of every Finder window. When you click on "NicksExternalDrive" in the upper left of the Finder, what's really happening is that Finder navigates to "/Volumes/NicksExternalDrive". When you disconnect the drive, it is "unmounted" and its corresponding directory in Volumes should be removed, and its entry in the drive list in the Finder will also disappear.
Since the iPhoto database indicates your pictures are on the external drive, iPhoto will be looking for that picture in the "/Volumes/NicksExternalDrive/SomeDirectory/iPhoto/....." folder (and I just made that up). When you ask iPhoto to see the "Show File," it sends that folder name to Finder and asks Finder to open up that folder. What you see, then, is Finder now being able to directly access that folder, since it's not connected to your computer. It keeps going up the folder tree until it gets to a folder that really exists, and then opens that for you. Since the drive is not connected, the first folder that exists is the "/Volumes" folder, and then you see that window.
I can't say exactly why your library, without pictures, is available when you don't have the hard drive connected. Did you choose to have iPhoto not copy files into its database, but rather to use files from your original locations? If so, your database/library is really on your local hard drive, but your photos (unmanaged by iPhoto) are on the external drive.

  • Invisible junk in ~/Library/Mail folder?

I have two imap mail accounts, one with .mac and another. Inside my folder ~/Library/Mail, one of the folders for the non-.mac account is quite large, ~325 MB, even though:
    a) there is not much mail in any folder of the account, and
    b) the only visible contents of the folder (2 folders, INBOX and INBOX.imapmbox) only add up to 11.5 MB.
Rebuilding the mailbox from the Mail application doesn't help. There seems to be some invisible junk in there, and probably elsewhere in the Mail folder. The number and hierarchy of folders in the Mail folder is very confusing. I have maintained these accounts through a lot of system changes. How do I clean it up and get rid of the unnecessary stuff?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    b) the only visible contents of the folder
(2 folders, INBOX and INBOX.imapmbox) only
    add up to 11.5 MB.
Is the INBOX.imapmbox located within the INBOX folder?
Regardless, I don't believe having both folders is normal - you should have an INBOX.imapmbox only.
    Try the following.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Delete the Envelope Index file and in addition, delete the .Mac account named folder and the account named folder for the IMAP account and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import all mailboxes available within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
Select OK and allow the import process to complete. This isn't really importing anything but replacing the Envelope Index file and re-indexing all messages. In addition, a new .Mac account named folder and a new account named folder for the IMAP account will be re-creating automatically along with new .imapmbox folders for the server stored mailboxes. All messages available on the server for both accounts will be re-synchronized with the server.
If this is successful and resolves the problem and after confirming all messages are available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder placed on the Desktop.

  • Creating a folder for a document library in SharePoint online

Hello I am looking for a good place to get started on creating a folder for a document library using a powershell script. Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is a guide to creating folders and items in a document library for SharePoint Server/Foundation: Creating SharePoint Folders
and Items with PowerShell. You will need to tailor it to your needs as it's a demo for creating 50,000 items.
That's step 1 and contains the bulk of what you would need to do. Here's an example of connecting to a library in SharePoint Online using CSOM: Office
365 - PowerShell Script to Upload Files to a Document Library using CSOM. You won't be uploading files, but the parts where you connect and get a list are what you're interested in.
Now you'll combine bits from both of these scripts:
    1. Connect to SPO
    2. Get your list (looks like you need to first get the site collection and then the site)
    3. Create a folder
I figure it would look something like this (note I haven't tested this at all):
#Specify tenant admin and site URL
    $User = "[email protected]"
    $SiteURL = "https://tenant.sharepoint.com/sites/site"
    $DocLibName = "DocLib"$FolderTitle = "Example Folder"
#Add references to SharePoint client assemblies and authenticate to Office 365 site - required for CSOM
    Add-Type -Path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\ISAPI\Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.dll"
    Add-Type -Path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\ISAPI\Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Runtime.dll"
$Password = Read-Host -Prompt "Please enter your password" -AsSecureString
    #Bind to site collection
    $Context = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ClientContext($SiteURL)
    $Creds = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.SharePointOnlineCredentials($User,$Password)
    $Context.Credentials = $Creds
    #Retrieve list
    $List = $Context.Web.Lists.GetByTitle($DocLibName)
    $folder = $list.AddItem("", [Microsoft.SharePoint.SPFileSystemObjectType]::Folder)
    $folder["Title"] = $FolderTitle
    $folder.Update();

  • How do I select a song from my ITunes Library and apply to a picture folder for a slide show?

How do I selcet a song from my ITunes library and apply it to a picture folder for a slide show. I have a PC, not a Mac.

    Short answer:
Click Hide Song(s), it is what you wanted to do...
    Long answer:
iTunes in the Cloud is a feature of your iTunes store account that allows you to redownload or stream your past purchases. When you delete a purchased track that is downloaded to your computer (like the first one shown here) you are asked if you also want to hide the song from iCloud. This would remove it from the computer and also stop it showing up with the iCloud symbol as the other tracks from that album (which are not downloaded) do.
If a track shows with the cloud symbol you can play (stream) it by double-clicking the title, or click the cloud symbol to download a local copy to your library. If you try to delete one of these tracks you get a slightly different message confirming that you want to hide the track. Clicking hide will remove the listing from the library and any other device that shows your past purchases.
Should you want to retrieve any item hidden in this way at a later date use Store > View My Account > iTunes in the Cloud > Hidden Purchases > Manage.
To hide all your previous purchases that are not downloaded to your computer use Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

  • Is there an automated way to scan my multimedia folder for files that are there and not in my library and add them ?

Is there an automated way to scan my multimedia folder for files that are there and not in my i tune library and add them to y existing library ?
I recenty had a damaged i tune library and had to import an old version.
This last one does not have many of the CD I have copied the past months. And I don't know which ones these are either as they are too many of them.

This will list files that are in the iTunes DB but the files are not in the media folder…

This will list files that are in the media library, but not in the iTunes DB.

I think it may misbehave with ringtones & some of the obscure media files, but they are both really powerful for repairing mangled libraries.
I would create a new smart playlist for 'Tracks added since (todays date)' so you can easily find any tracks that you add back to iTunes.
Doug has a lot of scripts for iTunes, spread the karma & donate if they are useful to you

  • How do i keep itunes from creating a folder for each movie that I add to my library?

When I add a movie to my library, iTunes 10 creates a SubFolder to the iTunes Movies folder, for each movie I add.  The older iTunes just added the Files to the Movies folder, whithout creating subfolders for each movie.
Is there a setting so that i can make version 10 do this?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

No, there is no custom setting for this. I wouldn't advise it, but if you really want you could downgrade to the older folder layout. However all your other folders will be arranged in the old layout too which may no be what you want.
See this old post of mine for more details. (Read the last bit first.)

  • I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Help please

I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Does anyone have the same problem or know how to fix it?

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate

  • Can I delete visualvm folder in Library?

I found this folder called "visualvm" in my library, but I wasn't sure if I should delete the folder or not in case it has system files in it. So does anyone know?
it's at the very bottom on the finder screenshot.

I run the latest fat cat (10.7.3) with Java and all the latest patches. Also have VirtualBox and Fusion. No "visualvm" to be found anywhere in the computer, starting with my ~/Library.
Does it have anything inside? Beware, may have invisible items. Open Terminal and type the following commands to be sure nothing hides in there (substitute your local spelling for "Library" between the slashes):
    cd ~/Library/visualvmls -la
Post back if anything shows up. Note that the . and  ..  directories are normal and should be there.

  • Folder for each cd instead of each artist

My iTunes library contains over 60GB of 256 kb/s AAC songs. When I started to use iTunes I choose to let iTunes manage the Music Folder. This resulted in a separate folder for each artist, but all I really wanted is a separate folder for each cd!
Is there a script that can organize my current iTunes Music Folder into folders for each cd instead of folders for each artist? This would save me a tremendous amount of time. Thanks.

    Thank you all for responding!
The reason for having iTunes organize all music by cd rather then by artist, is that I want to add and remove cd's already converted to aac in a convenient way to the iTunes folder (because the hdd of my PB is as good as full).
Some of the compilations cd's are placed in the compilation folder but most aren't. So what has happened is that I have an artist folder with several sub folders in it with songs that belong to compilations. In order to remove an entire compilation I will have to find each track belonging to that compilation by hand. Now if every track from a certain compilation would be placed in a folder with the name of the cd, I could easily cut and past that folder to a backup drive and replace it with another folder.
Hence my request for a way to place all files belonging to a compilation in one folder with the name of that compilation. That's my objective. But something tells me that I do not know iTunes as well as I thought!

    Hello there, gleab.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews the ways to import content into iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Also keep in mind which formats can be added:
You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats.

  • Adding folder to library...

    Hello all,
I've had a new computer built that has Vista on it... and before I did, I was proud of myself for backing up all my files, including my music, on an external drive.
However, when I try to "File>Add folder to library" and choose the folder "iTunes" in "My Music", I get the following error:
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Of course, Windows won't provide ANY solutions. :-/
Would anybody happen to know what I'm doing wrong? Or is there another way to get the music I backed up to my external drive INTO iTunes on my new computer?
I've even tried making an iTunes folder in the new computer's My Music folder and placing all my music from my external drive to the new iTunes folder...and iTunes won't spot it.
Please help! Thank you very much!
    Ted

Camoracer, thanks very much for answering.
    Okay, what I tried:
I copied all the folders from my iTunes in my external drive to "My Music" folder (located in the folder with my name on it).
I then went to iTunes application and tried File>Add folder to library... and NOTHING was there. None of the folders I had just recently copied.
I'm really confused what I'm doing wrong in a program that is supposedly very easy to use.

  • Is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library

is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library ?

As I understand it Robo doesn't really 'do' third-party
source control. We use SourceGear Vault, but really only as a
repository for the files. We can't really work concurrently because
Robo needs exclusive access to the top level project files. But it
kind of works for us, because we're on opposite sides of the globe.
I see what you're saying on the 'local' versions of (say) the
cpd files conflicting. If anyone else has an informed view, I'm all
ears. We've set it up this way ourselves - I don't know of anyone
doing the same. If someone tells me this is a bad idea, I'm happy
    to think again.
    Cheers!

iTunes for Mac has never had an "Add folder to library" option. This is only available on Windows version.
Select Add to library, select the folder then click OK.
Or drag the folder(s) to the iTunes library at top left of iTunes.
