IOS 7 breaks SMS - Clarification

There is a problem with iOS 7 and perhaps the backend servers Apple uses. I don't fully understand the iOS iMessage architecture so can't confirm or deny this but from a user's perspective, it has broken a part of the ability to SMS an ex-iOS iMessage user.
Let me clarify.
First, conditions required for the broken SMS scenario.
User 1: A current iOS 7 iPhone user. I haven't tested this with users who are just on iPad so can't comment for iPad users. I'm going to call this user simply "User 1".
User 2: An ex-iOS iPhone user. I'm calling this second user simply "User 2". This user no longer uses iPhone but did at one stage and has the same phone number used when she was using the iPhone. I can categorically confirm this fictional user based on a real life person was using an iPhone 4 in the past and has now switched to another branded phone. This user can ONLY receive SMS and MMS messages. User 2 has not used an iPhone for several years now. She jumped from iPhone 4 during its first year of release to another brand and haven't looked back.
SMS is "short message service" and is universal in the world of mobile phones. No one needs to download another application to use it. Its just there. For ALL mobile phones regardless of brand.
The problem is when user 1 tries to SMS user 2. For some reason, Apple stores the phone number for user 2 and identifies it as an iMessage user. Even after several years of non-use. So when User 1 who has been a faithful Apple iOS iMessage user upgrades his phone to iOS 7, all of a sudden, the message client doesn't want to send User 2 messages via the SMS service anymore. It defaults to iMessage and it won't be discouraged to send it via SMS no matter what user 1 or 2 tries to do using the phones built-in configuration and settings. This issue occurs consistently for user 1 with iOS 7.
Prior to iOS 7, user 1 never has a problem sending an SMS to user 2. This is the bizarre bit. It appears as if the messaging client on Apple iPhones prior to iOS 7 tries to send an iMessage but somehow, it checks to see if user 2 (the recipient) is really connected to iMessage and falls back to SMS automatically. I am not sure what the logic is exactly but this logic has been taken out of iOS 7 and its Messaging client.
Documentation for iPhones (even the latest iPhone 5/5s), out of the box, don't tell anyone that they need to do anything if they ever need to switch out of the Apple brand. A message was meant to be just that. A message. Whether it was SMS, MMS, email or Blackberry Messenger (BBM), you decide you no longer want to use it, you just STOP using it and people can still reach you via SMS on another branded phone. This was the case prior to iOS 7. iOS 7 has broken this model requiring you all now to unregister/unlink yourself from its iMessage database. In my scenario, even after years of non-use.
You are now forced to go to https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do to unlink your iPhone if you're selling your iPhone or if you have already dispose of your iPhone.
I have heard advice (unqualified) that the iMessage service will unregister you automatically after 2-3 months but this obviously didn't happen for user 2.
Hope this clarifies the situation up for some users having issues with getting SMS messages when you are not currently using an iPhone.

Unlinking your phone number from iMessage
Here's a tip if you still have your iPhone. Perhaps you keep spare phones or you just haven't gotten around to selling it on eBay.
Go to: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5538
Scroll all the way down to Additional Information.
Click on Unlink a phone number and follow the instructions there.
Be aware that if you own multiple iOS devices, the instructions indicate you may need to signout of iMessage and Facetime for all your iOS devices.
Note also that the above article also suggests changing your Apple ID password (if you still use iTunes or another iOS device) which might cause iMessage to stop working on your older device. I am going to add a caveat here by stating that on my friend's iPhone 4, she had no Apple ID associated with her phone and iMessage. The only association there in iMessage was a phone number so this may not work for you.

  • IOS 5 breaks iPad internal speakers. Why?

iOS 5 breaks 1ST generation iPad internal speakers.   Why? I don't know and neither does Apple Tech Support.  Now... sound only plays back with a 3.5 phone jack.
I've seen/followed the threads and the advice therin, but there is no answer.  So much for all my apps, radios, clocks? My iPad s basically useless.
Dare i say it.....jailbreak and try to downgrade te OS?  Suggestions?

Downgrading the iOS is not supported. Do you get sound in any apps from the speakers e.g. Videos and Music apps but not other apps ? If you do get sound in the Videos and Music apps then have you got notifications muted ?
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • PC suite export/import breaks SMS messages

    Nokia PC suite 6.85.14.1
    Windows XP SP2
Phone 6500 classic connected either by Bluetooth or USB
just updated 6500c to 4.84 firmware
an sms message is received and is viewable fine in Inbox
using the phone I move it to Archive, it is still OK
I then export it to PC (drag-n-drop to a folder)
I delete the message in the phone and import (drag-n-drop) back to Archive
The message is there but it does not show sender name (instead I see the date in the header)
When I open the message and click message details, I can see that
To: field contains the actual sender, while Sender: has (no address)
I tried various things including messing with vmg content (putting same TEL: field to both VCARD entries), but on the import to 6500c, it is the same story - as if the import swaps the sender with receiver and clears the sender field
Please also note that at all times, when I view the messages in PC Suite (phone browser) they show correct sender field, I just need to see the same on the actual phone
Is there something I am missing?
Generally I just need to copy old sms messages from 7260, but when importing them they break as described above. I then tried to export a "6500" message and import it back - with same result. So it appears to be a PC Suite issue rather than anything

al_lea, thanks, I already thought about that, but as I said to exlucde any incompatibility issues within vmg I tried a export/import of a "native" sms freshly received on the 6500, and it gives the same problem.
I also tried changing versions to 3.0 manually in the vmg with no luck.
I'm starting to think the message is actually ok, but it's probably the 6500c software that doesn't display them right. When I try to reply to "broken" message, it does go to sender, even though he is not displayed as one
it looks like PC suite export or import strips the empty to: VCARD from inside the vmg, which is fine by the standards but 6500c doesnt like

  • IOS 4.2 SMS tone (possible) bug

Has anyone else noticed that there are SMS tones you can't remove for sent SMS texts? Another user and myself updated to iOS 4.2 this afternoon, both of us using iPhone 4's, and now both of us are stuck with outgoing text tones.
Anyone else experience this or notice this? Even with all tones set to 'off' it still makes a tone for outgoing.

I am ready to throw my phone at the wall I am so frustrated by the annoying whooshing sound it emits after I send a text message. Upon calling Apple Tech Support I learned that there is no control setting to fix or alter the sound made once a text is sent.
I want to individually control what happens when I receive a call, receive a text, and send a text. I have no idea why they are all interconnected. This is a basic phone necessity that has been completely overlooked by Apple.
Those of you who have this same problem I encourage you to post about it so the problem is addressed in the next update. For a short term fix just set the phone to vibrate, you lose the ability to hear calls, but gain sanity that would otherwise be lost putting up with the whoosh sound.

  • Exporting to iOS release break project

    Hi,
I'm working on a project right now for a couple of months, and suddenly, the release export to iOS breaks. I have been debugging for the last 2 days, but can't find the solution. It works great in AIR simulator, or with fast packaging / release debug packaging.
Can I send you the project files Adobe, so you can have a look?

Or is there a way to see more info? Maybe a log file? Or iOS log file?
I get an error in the beginning of the app. (Let's say a #1034 error). But that error isn't true, has nothing to do with what the error says. If I remove a piece of code, what has literally nothing to do with that part, it works again.
I'm rebuilding the whole project now, piece by piece, until it breaks again. Really frustrating.

  • IOS blocking incoming SMS containing specific URL's

Does anyone know if a SMS can get blocked if it contains a specific URL? We sent a link to customers in an SMS so they can track an order. Now all iPhones have started to block these messages that contain our URL to track it. other devices receive the SMS with the URL OK, so it looks like Apple is blocking it.
They are only blocking our domain used for tracking, and not our other domains e.g company homepage.
Is there anywhere we can request it to be unblocked?
We tested on 6 different iPhones:
    IOS 7.xx
    IOS 8.02
    IOS 8.13

Started carrer with afaria 7. I used to wonder as to why this feature not their in afaria while it works superb in case of Airwatch. You provided a workaround... Nice to see this.

  • IOS 4 breaks CalDAV calendars (events are missing)

I can successfully connect to my CalDAV server on my iPhone. The list of calendars, including delegates, show up in Calendar with their assigned calendar colors. Unfortunately, no events are visible. If I create an event on my iPhone, it is successfully published to my server and will also show up in iCal on my Mac and my web client. The event then disappears from my iPhone.
iCal has no problem with my calendar server and my iPhone synchronized with it just fine before iOS 4.
Google Calendar via CalDAV works fine.
    Calendar server: SOGo (http://www.sogo.nu/english.html)
    Phone: 3GS with iOS 4

The "All Events" hack no longer works for SOGo in iOS 4. I found the reference to making it work on 3.1.2:

  • Upgrading to iOS 4 breaks with error -402636802

I'm trying to upgrade my iPhone 3G to iOS 4. iTunes detects that a new iPhone version is available. After the software has been downloaded I click "Update". iTunes then starts backing up my iPhone. After 20 approx. 20 mins I see the following error message:
"An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (-402636802). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone without backup? Continuing without backup will result in the loss of all content on this iPhone".
Loosing all context is not an option. I have quite a few apps that I don't want to loose.
It's an iPhone 3G with 16 GB RAM. 4.28 GB of space is available.
    Any ideas what's going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Had a long day yesterday, and seems that it will be that way today as well. Here's the issue:
Yesterday, I had a loooooooong install process, same as everyone else. Let it do it's thing for a few hours, and was almost done when I got this error:
"An error occurred while restoring this iPod (-402636802)"
It then continued to "sync" all my content. However, upon completion I opened up my iPod and 98% of the third party apps had been deleted. Just Dropbox and Chess with Friends remained. I then right clicked my ipod in iTunes and chose to restore from the backup I made before I started updating. I am so smart! SMRT...
Everything looked to be going swell, it was re-installing the applications...waited for all 94 of them to install, and then suddenly got this error message for EVERY ONE of those apps:
"The Application "INSERT NAME" was not installed on the iPod "My iPod" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8003FFE)"
I've since done the restore twice, with the same results both times. I've tried to re-download apps from the app store, which works (but is SOOOO tedious), but it wants to make me re-pay for all apps that cost (obviously a few miles short of ideal).
Also of note is that when I connect my iPod to iTunes, it shows that I have 1.93 GB of "Other" stored on the iPod, which when added with my 112.2 MB of "Apps" is very close to the space taken up by my apps before I "upgraded." Even more telling is that in the "Apps" tab of my iPod, IT SHOWS ALL THE APPS INSTALLED, although the whole tab is greyed out because I have the app store locked on this iPod! (yes, the "Sync Apps" radio button is checked) Yet when I actually use the device, they're not there.

  • IOS 6 breaks MMS

I am on a 16GB iPhone 4 on AT&T.  After upgrading to iOS 6 today MMS functions are completely broken.  I cannot send a picture or video message to anyone.  It just gives me the red exclamation point and says "Not delivered".  I have already reset my network settings.  I have removed any custom APN settings, I've even tried a hard reset (holding down Home and Power simultaneiously till the phone shuts down and restarts).  Nothing has worked and I am still without MMS.
Any help on troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated.  I can't be the only one who has this problem.  Anyone?

I have the problem also.  Updated my iphone 4 to ios 6 yesterday, and can't get iMessage to activate, cannot send pictures via MMS.  Between this, the WiFi big, and the Maps app, I'm starting to wish I'd stayed with ios 5!
    Any help gratefully appreciated.
    Jeff

Has anyone fixed the ios 7 problem with charging the ipad 3 ? I fiureed out how to work around it but what is wrong with Apple?

AFRetired87, you have a fresh new look, thanks to iOS 7. When connecting your iPhone to a charger, the battery charging icon is located at the top right corner which reflects the battery life percentage. I apologize that the option to havet he green bar is not available. For more information regarding this software update, click http://bit.ly/bOQC84

  • IPhone 5S iOS 7: iMessage / SMS Haptic Feedback

    Two issues here:
How can I stop my iPhone from notifying me twice over about a text (not the double vibrate from a text, but a double vibrate then another one about two minutes later even though a new text has not come in)?
How can I stop my iPhone from telling me (both visually and with haptic feedback) that an iMessage failed to send despite successfully and automatically sending as a text? Tell me that after all options are exhausted and it fails, not when it fails in iMessage then succeeds in SMS.
    Thanks...

  • IOS 6 breaks corp proxy authentication

    Hi All.
I recently updated my iPhone 4S from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 6.
I now can no longer access the internet through our corporate web proxy.  In fact it's displaying the same symptoms it used to display under iOS 5.1 and earlier (fixed in 5.1.1).
    The symptoms are:
    * The proxy logs show a 407 auth challenge has been sent to the client.
    * the device does not respond using the username and password I assigned to the proxy for the WiFi profile.
    * occasionally the device pops up a login dialog for the proxy, but fails to auth even when I enter correct credentials
So, basically it is ignoring the creds I entered.  It's a real shame this bug crept back into 6 after it was finally fixed.
The proxy server is our own product - WinGate - so we can see exactly what is going on, and we do know a bit about proxy auth.  If anyone from Apple wants to fix this once and for all, please get in touch.  I've seen other posts about using auto proxy detect (which then doesn't have credentials), but that didn't work either.
Posts about attempting to access a success.html file on apple's servers and assuming a captive portal if it fails seems to me very misguided, I certainly hope Apple didn't take that disastrous approach.  Proxy auth is deterministic, and requires no assumptions to be made at all.

Shockingly, this is still a problem as of iOS 8.0.2.  Have you been able to work around this?

  • HT5887 Did iOS 8 break AirDrop for anyone else?

AirDrop worked just fine for me in iOS 7 -- my iPhone and iPad were both set to "Contacts Only" and I could easily share content between them. Since upgrading to iOS 8 they only see each other when AirDrop is set to "Everyone," but I can still see friends' phones when on "Contacts Only." The same thing is happening now in Yosemite, where I can only share things with myself if AirDrop is set to "Everyone." All three devices are signed into iCloud.
Does anyone know how to get AirDrop working again like it did in iOS 7? Today's 8.1 update did not resolve the issue for me.

Other people have reported issues with the keyboard in iOS 8. I had some problems and I reset all settings and that fixed most of the issues - everywhere but in this forum. But the keyboard problems in this forum are a as a result of the crappy software that this forum runs on.
First reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. See if that does any good.
If that made no difference, try this. Reset all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.

  • IOS notifications break when i enable Work Exchange

My iOS notifications have always worked perfectly well both displaying in the lock screen view and via popup but recently i have started activating my work MS exchange mail on my iphone at random times (to quickly check work email). The notifications will continue working for the next couple of mails but then they stop entirely. If i disable the exchange account i'll still receive no notifications from my other imap/pop accounts. I'll only hear a beep or feel a buzz indicating that a mail or notification has occurred but the screen stays dark. It seems like a bug to me. Is anyone else aware of this?

This is intended behavior. Missed calls appear when the phone rang and you "missed" the call. When you aren't connected, you don't receive the call so it is not a "missed" call. You will only receive a notification if there is a message in your voicemail once the phone comes back online.
