IP Video conferencing best practice - Tanberg/Cisco hardware

We are currently experiencing intermittant issues with our Video conferencing internal and external network with intermittant screen fragmentation. We have separate VLAN's configured on our internal network for the Video traffic only. We use the movi client on the with the majority of our remote users. I'm wondering what is the best practice based in setting up and support a Video conference network.

Have you set up QoS policies for video?

Highest Quality Live Video Streaming | Best Practice Recommendations?

Our requirement is publishing a single presenter to many viewers (generally around 5 to 50 viewers).
Also, can it make any difference if the publisher is running Flash Player 10 vs Flash Player 9?

For achieving best quality
a) you should use RTMFP connection instead of RTMPS. RTMFP has a lower latency.
b) You should the player 10 swc.
c) If bandwidth is not a restriction for you, you can use higest quality values. WebcamPublisher class has property for setting quality.
d) You can use a lower keyframeInterval value, which in turn will send videos in full frames rather than by a video compression algorithm.
e) You should use Speex Codec. Speex Codec is again provided with player 10 swc.
These are some suggestions that can improve your quality depending on your requirements.

Timing beats for music video - workflow best practices?

Hi all,
I am currently working on a short video that needs to be timed to music. Obviously in some respects, a tool like Final Cut or Premier would be more suited to the task in certain ways, but for reasons of the technical specification of the output, it has to be done in After Effects.
So I am trying to nail down a good workflow for timing various elements of the project to the beat of the soundtrack. What I'm doing so far is, I have expanded the waveform of the soundtrack so I can get some rough visual on where obvious changes happen. See the screenshot to the left. I placed a marker on the exact frame where the drum kick happens, where I would want to do something cool with the video.
This is obviously of limited utility, because although the beat does coincide with one of the peaks of the waveform, it's not apparent from looking at it which one it would be. It's also not quite possible to ascertain the exact frame on which the beat happens using this method, as each peak is several frames long and includes several elements of the audio.
So the next thing I tried is simply listening to the track with RAM-preview, and pressing the * key to place markers on the soundtrack on the beat. Maybe some of you are better at rhythm games than I could hope to be, but I find that while this lets me put down a lot of markers quickly, it's very inexact.
Which, alright, is to be expected - I might not get every marker on the exact frame on the first try, but I can go back and slide them a few frames, right? But the problem here is with scrubbing audio, and with visual feedback with the playhead. When you RAM preview, the playhead does not update on every frame - it updates only every seven or eight frames or so. Which means that if I watch the timeline to see if my markers are in the right place, I can't tell when the playhead passes over them.
So instead, I hold down the Ctrl button and scrub. This kinda works, but the playback of the audio is quite choppy and discontiguous. As such it's hard to get a sense of each frame as part of the song, and even if I do hear a beat it's hard to recognize it as such (this technique works better in Final Cut somehow, for some reason it manages to scrub while sounding less discontiguous). So then what I do is I stop on a frame I think might possibly be the beat, and I hold Ctrl and Left Click on the playhead, which loops a short segment (five frames?) of the audio. Then I do the same for a few frames before and afterward, just to make sure I targeted the right frame. Now, finally, I have the marker in the right place for a single beat.
There's got to be a better way.
I wonder if anyone who has been faced with this problem has figured out a more effective workflow? I am thinking there might be a separate piece of software I might use that lets me go through the audio and place markers better - and then allows me to somehow export marker data to After Effects? Or maybe another workflow I haven't thought of.

Cutting music accurately to beats is usually a simple matter of math. Most music, especially music with a strong beat, runs at a specific number of beats per minute. That's usually easy to figure out. There are times when you have a tempos shift or a fermata, acc. or ret. or other change they are usually for a short duration and pretty easy to fix. Figure out the tempo and you're about 90% there.
Another tool, and one that I use quite often is Sound Keys from Trapcode. This is much more versatile than using the built in Convert audio to keyframes.
If I have a fairly long segment that has a bunch of beats quick beats I will sometimes create a small solid, add hue and saturation to the small solid set to colorize, add this expression to colorize hue - index * 140, trim the length of the layer to the length of the beat, then duplicate the layer for as many beats as I want to cover, sequence the layers, and then use that layer sequence as a guide. The setup looks like this:
You could also use a loopOut expression on rotation to rotate a small layer say 45º on every beat. For example, if you had a beat every 20 frames set 3 hold keyframes, one at the first frame for 0º, one at frame 20 for 40º then put one at frame 40 for 0º and simply add the expression loopOut("cycle") to rotation. Now the little cube would snap to a different angle on every beat.
These tricks will help you with some fast cuts right to the beat but let me give you some advice on cutting to music that I learned 42 years ago (yes, I am an old guy) when I was learning to edit to music at my first job in film. My mentor had been in the business since 1952, had worked as an editor on a ton of feature films and a zillion commercials. He told me that if you precisely match the beat, which was pretty easy to find and mark with a wax pencil on mag stock, your cuts will look out of sync. The problem with that precision is that the eye and the ear are not precisely in sync. The lead or lag time depends on the shot, where the shot is taking your eye, where the cut moves your eye, and the mood the music is creating. The best technique is to listen to the music and place markers as you tap out the beat. In the old days I did this by tapping a wax pencil on the mag stock as it ran through the Steenbeck or Moviola, today I do it by tapping the * key, then I cut and adjust the cut point letting the shot dictate when the music and beat line up emotionally. You'll get a better result and your work will go much faster than fussing around trying to precisely match the beat with every cut. I have shifted cuts as many as 4 or 5 frames ahead or behind to beat to get sequence to feel right.
I do use the two techniques I listed above to cut short segments of very tight cuts and they help save time, but setting your comp resolution to auto and your comp Zoom factor to 25%, ram preview to "From current time," and just cutting to the beat by feel will give you a much more pleasing and emotional response to your sequence than precisely and mathematically exactly matching the beat. The final piece of advice I can give you about cutting music is to make the first cut, then walk away for at least a half hour, then come back and look at what you have done. You'll instantly see where you need to make adjustments and it will take you less than half the time to cut your sequence.

Cellular Video versions, best practices

Any suggestions for transcoding a video to cellular specs? I have tried Compressor 4 and 4.1 and have not been able to meet the bit rate requirements for the cellular version. Also tried Quicktime 7

In compressor, you'll want to create a QuickTime Export Component by clicking the plus in the lower left to create a new setting.
In the window displayed, give it a name and make sure the format is "QuickTime Export Components"
choose the MPEG-4 in the Encoder-type drop-down menu and click the Configure button.
then fill out the appropriate settings for the encoding you want for Video:
for Audio:
and for Streaming:
You'll create a Cellular and Wifi setting for iPad and Cellular and Wifi setting for iPhone - 4 in total.
That should get you going. Please refer to the details provided by iAd for the exact settings for each of the panels above.

Best camera for Cisco Video Advantage

I am looking for a camera which is having the best specifications for Video advantage. It looks like the Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 is the one. (1600 x 1190 with 30 fps) Does anyone have experience with this camera or who has good experience with a camera which is not listed in the "tested" camera list:

Thanks a lot for your reply. We tried several models which are not in the list. They all worked. The only problem is that the Video Advantage narrows down the format. I tried the Logitech Quickcam Sphere AF. In the Logitech application it's a great Webcam in with HD quality but these are the Specifications of Video advantage:
â¢ H.263 and H.264 video codecs: Bit rates from 50 kbps to 1.5 Mbps
â¢ Video formats (up to 30 frames per second): 352 x 288, 320 x 240, 176 x 144, and 160 x 120
â¢ Interoperable with most third-party H.323 video terminals from verified IP video telephony partners
So it's only working at 352 x 288. I hope the next version of Video advantage is able to increase the resolution.
I would also like to know if there is a way to enable the camera automatically when a phone call is established.
I don't have a MCU to do video conferencing but is there a way to conference a none-video phone into an video conversation?

Best Practice E-Business 12.1.3/11gR2 Hardware Configuration

We are in the design phase for a new install of E-Business 12.1.3 / 11gR2
From a hardware services point, what is deemed to be the "best practice"?

In the past I have always gone with Option 2 so that the database traffic is minimised between conc managers / database. That to me seemed most logical. But wanted to ask the oracle community about their thoughts
We are using redhat linux / Cisco Blades (USC/VMWARE) and all connecting to a NetApp FAS3270.

Exactly what I was thinking but its nice to get someone elses clarity too.
The PCP option is certainly something I need to take into consideration - but with the new abilities of 12.1.3 cloning processes - it would be easy enough to split the admin Conc Nodes away at a later date should the requirement exist.
i.e.
Initially have 1 x forms/web server plus 1 x database / concurrent manager node
If we need to go to PCP and / or forms load balancing
we could easily go to 2 x forms / web server and add the Conc Node into it brining in PCP too.
I have to admist, the way Oracle have sorted the cloning process is 12 is very good indeed.

Designing Cisco Video conferencing solution

Hi All,
I need to design a single site Cisco IP Video Conferencing soultion which should support web, chat, ISDN and email etc support.
there will be one conferencing room which will be communicating with other remote or traving users.
the requirement is that remote or travelling users should be able to have the video conferencing facility with the Headoffice(single site) and vise versa.
Any help will be much appreciated.

I would recommend Cisco unified presence server for your deployment with MPX. That will give you chat, voice and video conferencing. If you dont use MPX then you can only do point-to-point video CUPS on its own doesnt support video conferencing.
YOu can also intergrate with exchange to view meetings and unity to listen to voicemails.
You can use VTA for the remote clients and 7985 for central site or some sort of tanberg phone if you want a larger screen.
The remote users are going to have to have a pretty low latency connection to get good quality video/voice.

I like Captivate, but have had a lot of trouble capturing playing video (a big part of my client's product) in the past. Despite encouraging client to consider other tools, they have decided they want to continue using Captivate and output to SWF. Some of us on the team for a previous project using v3.0 were able to successfully capture moving video, others weren't. (Vaguely recall something to do with a Hardware Acceleration setting, but it didn't work for everyone.) We've all upgraded to v4.0 but haven't used it yet. My questions are:
1. Has this been improved at all in v4.0?
2. What is the "optimum" PC hardware for doing this? (I am purchasing a new desktop, and need to keep cost to a minimum, BUT that is secondary to being able to produce these demos with moving video captured well!)
3. Can you give me any best practice tips specific to capturing moving video? FYI, we will be adding audio narration (after capture), but will not be using written captions except for a few Notes/Tips.

Oracle EPM 11.1.2.3 Hardware Requirement and best practice

Could anyone help me find the Minimum Hardware Requirement for the Oracle EPM 11.1.2.3 on the Windows 2008R2 Server? What's best practice to get the optimum performance after the default configuration i.e. modify or look for the entries that need to be modified based on the hardware resource (CPU and RAM) and number of users accessing the Hyperion reports/files.

Why would you want to know the minimum requirements, surely it would be best to have optimal server specs, the nearest you are going to get is contained in the standard deployment guide - About Standard Deployment
Saying that it is not possibly to provide stats based on nothing, you would really need to undertake a technical design review/workshop as there many topics to cover before coming up with server information.

It should be around 7 and a half gigs. In iTunes, across the bottom there should be a bar that show how much storage is being used and by what. (music, movies, apps, etc.) To make music take up less room, you can check the box to make it convert the music to 128kbps AAC. This lowers the quality, but with most earbuds and speakers, you can't even tell the difference.
The iPod touch has parental controls built in. You'll find them in Settings. I think they only work for enabling/disabling Safari, Mail, YouTube, and App Store. Here's an app that does more: http://www.mobicip.com/online_safety/ipod_touch

Best practice for Video over IP using ISDN WAN

I am looking for the best practice to ensure that the WAN has suffient active ISDN channels to support the video conference connection.
Reliance on load threshold either -
Takes to long for the ISDN calls to establish causing the problems for video setup
- or is too fast to place additional ISDN calls when only data is using the line
What I need is for the ISDN calls to be pre-established just prior to the video call. Have done this in the past with the "ppp multilink links minimum commmand but this manual intervention isn't the preferred option in this case

This method is as secure as the password: an attacker can see
the hashed value, and you must assume that they know what has been
hashed, with what algorithm. Therefore, the challenge in attacking
this system is simply to hash lots of passwords until you get one
that gives the same value. Rainbow tables may make this easier than
you assume.
Why not use SSL to send the login request? That encrypts the
entire conversation, making snooping pointless.
You should still MD5 the password so you don't have to store
it unencrypted on the server, but that's a side issue.

Best Practice for Showing Videos in a Windows Application

I am building a windows 8 application that has multiple articles. Each article will have anywhere from 0-3 videos associated with it. I was wondering where I could find some guidelines, best practices or examples about the how best to do this

Best practice for importing non-"Premiere-ready" video files

Hello!
I work with internal clients that provide me with a variety of differnet video types (could be almost ANYTHYING, WMV, MP4, FLV). I of course ask for AVIs when possible, but unfortunately, I have no control over the type of file I'm given.
And, naturally, Premiere (just upgraded to CS5) has a hard time dealing with these files. Unpredictable, ranging from working fine to not working at all, and everything in between. Naturally, it's become a huge issue for turnaround time.
Is there a best practice for preparing files for editing in Premiere?
I've tried almost everything I can think of: converting the file(s) to .AVIs using a variety of programs/methods. Most recently, I tried creating a Watch Folder in Adobe Media Encoder and setting it for AVI with the proper aspect ratio. It makes sense to me that that should work:using an Adobe product to render the file into something Premiere can work with.
However, when I imported the resulting AVI into Premiere, it gave me the Red Line of Un-renderness (that is the technical term, right?), and had the same sync issue I experienced when I brought it in as a WMV.
Given our environment, I'm completely fine with adding render time to the front-end of projects, but it has to work. I want files that Premiere likes.

I use an older conversion program (my PrPro has a much older internal AME, unlike yours), DigitalMedia Converter 2.7. It is shareware, and has been replaced by Deskshare with newer versions, but my old one works fine. I have not tried the newer versions yet. One thing that I like about this converter is that it ONLY uses System CODEC's, and does not install its own, like a few others. This DOES mean that if I get footage with an oddball CODEC, I need to go get it, and install it on the System.
I can batch process AV files of most types/CODEC's, and convert to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio and at 29.97 FPS (I am in NTSC land). So far, 99% of the resultant converted files have been perfect, whether from DivX, WMV, MPEG-2, or almost any other format/CODEC. If there is any OOS, my experience has been that it will be static, so I just have to adjust the sync offset by a few frames, and that takes care of things.
In a few instances, the PAR flag has been missed (Standard 4:3 vs Widescreen 16:9), but Interpret Footage has solved those few issues.
Only oddity that I have observed (mostly with DivX, or WMV's) is that occasionally, PrPro cannot get the file's Duration correct. I found that if I Import those problem files into PrElements, and then just do an Export, to the same exact specs., that resulting file (seems to be 100% identical, but something has to be different - maybe in the header info?) Imports perfectly into PrPro. This happens rarely, and I have the workaround, though it is one more step for those. I have yet to figure out why one very similar file will convert with the Duration info perfect, and then a companion file will not. Nor have I figured out exactly what is different, after running through PrE. Every theory that I have developed has been shot down by my experiences. A mystery still.
AME works well for most, as a converter, though there are just CODEC's, that Adobe programs do not like, such as DivX and Xvid. I doubt that any Adobe program will handle those suckers easily, if at all.

What is the best practice for full browser video to achieve the highest quality?

I'd like to get your thoughts on the best way to deliver full-browser (scale to the size of the browser window) video. I'm skilled in the creation of the content but learning to make the most out of Flash CS5 and would love to hear what you would suggest.
Most of the tutorials I can find on full browser/scalable video are for earlier versions of Flash; what is the best practice today? Best resolution/format for the video?
If there is an Adobe guide to this I'm happy to eat humble pie if someone can redirect me to it; I'm using CS5 Production Premium.
I like the full screen video effect they have on the "Sounds of pertussis" web-site; this is exactly what I'm trying to create but I'm not sure what is the best way to approach it - any hints/tips you can offer would be great?

Use the little squares over your video to mask the quality. Sounds of Pertussis is not full screen video, but rather full stage. Which is easier to work with since all the controls and other assets stay on screen. You set up your html file to allow full screen. Then bring in your video (netstream or flvPlayback component) and scale that to the full size of your stage (since in this case it's basically the background) . I made a quickie demo here. (The video is from a cheapo SD consumer camera, so pretty poor quality to start.)
