IPhone 3G overheat with Griffin Powerjolt car charger

My Vz iPhone4 overheats when charged in car with Griffin Powerjolt car charger (P1080R2).  It also charges very slowly with this charger.  Doesn't overheat and charges fast with Apple wall/USB charger.  I'm thinking about returning it to the Apple store.  Anyone else with this problem?  Does anyone have a better car charger to recommend?  Thanks.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I wanted to comment on Griffin Technology's good name. I just purchased the Powerjolt Universal 10 watt P1080R2, and it works just fine with my VZ iPhone 4. No overheating, and the charge time is normal.

  • Will the iPhone 5 work with existing USB car chargers?

    Just curious (and maybe stupid).

"4G" is a marketing term, not a technical term.
The iPhone 5 can operate on any compatible HSPA+ network anywhere in the world. HSPA+ is defined by the ITU as "4G" and is marketed as such by many carriers. The only iPhones I'm aware of that display "4G" in the status bar are those originally intended for AT&T in the U.S.
LTE is also defined as "4G" and is marketed as such by pretty much every carrier that has an LTE network. When connected to an LTE network, "LTE" should appear in the status bar.
The frequencies used for LTE networks vary from region to region across the globe. In order to use an available LTE network, the phone you're using must have been sold to work in your region.
Apple doesn't have to "enable" anything for it to work. All you need is a phone that's compatible with your network, and a plan that allows for LTE data.
If you purchased the phone from another region, the U.S. for example, it will NOT work on the LTE netwok in your part of the world.

  • What are my options for in car charging AND music playing for iPhone 3G?

Ok, before you direct me to the other threads, I have read them, and I still don't know what product I can buy for my 3G that will charge my phone and play music in my car.
With my original iPhone I was using the Griffin iTrip FM transmitter. It always gave me that message to ask if I want to switch to airplane mode. I would pick yes or no, then it would charge and play music.
When I plug in my 3G I get the yellow triangle warning that says this device doesn't charge this phone (paraphrasing of course). It appears that it will play music, but if it won't charge my phone then I'm going to run the battery down fast. I rely on being able to charge my phone a bit during the day in the car.
I do not have any AUX port in my car or any kind of iPod hookup in my car that I am reading about on other threads. As far as I know, an FM transmitter or a cassette adapater (I do have a tape deck) are my only options. However, since my husband's car that I drive on the weekends to work does not have a tape deck, I would really prefer a device that does not use a tape (also my previous experience with a tape adapter is that they stop working after a short while).
The power port in my car is nearly at the floor, nowhere near the dash, so any device I use cannot require me to rely on the "on device" controls to control the music.
    I see this on amazon
*Griffin PowerJolt Car Charger for iPod and iPhone (Black)*
    *Technical Details*
*¿ Enjoy full use of your iPod or iPhone during car trips, and arrive with your battery fully charged.*
*¿ Includes detachable Dock Connector to USB Type A cable that can be used separately to connect your iPod or iPhone to your computer.*
*¿ Includes USB Type A to mini-B cable so you can charge while using Griffin iTrip or other dock connector devices that have built-in pass-throughs.*
*¿ 2 Amp automotive blade-type fuse protects against spikes and surges and is easily replaceable.*
*¿ Works with iPhone, iPod models that feature full-size dock connector, and iPod shuffle (1st generation).*
And in another thread, people reported that the Griffin powerjolt DOES work with the 3G, so does the above description mean that I can use this device with my iTrip to charge and play music?

My Pioneer iPod car audio adapter cable does NOT charge my iPhone 3G and they have no plans to change this at this time.
I have a cheapo Griffin car iPod charger (the kind that has a plug for the cigarette lighter and a separate cable that has a mini-USB on one end and a dock connector on the other) and it DOES charge my 3G iPhone.
Go figure, but for now there it is.
Someone HAS to be working on an adapter that goes between the 3G iPhone and a dock connector device to fix this charging issue (which I guess has to do with the last iPhone and many iPods being able to charge via USB at 5V and/or FireWire at 12V but the new iPhone only charging via USB at 5V)

  • Why is the new Griffin Powerjolt lightning car charger 10W?

I know the answer, so they can sell it for both Ipad and Iphone.  But if the Apple iphone charger is 5W, then why is the new Griffin Powerjolt SE charger allowed to be listed as OK for Iphone?  If the Iphone were supposed to be charged at 10W, then Apple would have supplied a 10W charger.

Now that I have done a more thorough evaluation of available info, it appears that as long as the voltage is the same (which it is) then it will draw at only the amperage that it requires, meaning no problem.  Thanks.

  • Car charger compatability with iphone

will a regular ipod car charger charge the iphone?

I use some Griffin brand car charger, I think, and it works great on the iPod...on the iPhone it is less than par for only one reason...the iPhone doesn't realize it is plugged in but it is still getting charged. It keeps kicking battery life down and down, even to the warnings, but once I unplug it and unlock it, it shows the proper charge. Weird I guess but it still charges it nonetheless.

  • White screen of death after using with car charger

I plugged my iphone into a brand new belkin car charger and it instantly caused the screen to go white. I unplugged it immediately and then reset it.
The next day I charged it and it booted up ok, but would not acquire the cell network and then would not respond to touch.
I then rebooted again and rather than getting pure white screen, I got lines of different colour vertically up and down the screen. Eventually it then created a white screen again. Everytime I reset or touched any button, the same sequence would occur - flicker of coloured lines on the screen and then  fill out to a white screen. Plugging it into a mac made no difference, it was not recognised by the computer.
It is now completely bricked and does not respond to anything.
    Anyone seen anything similar ?

Yes!!! After the 1.1.1 update, I had the exact same thing happen with my Belkin Auto Kit. A real bummer, because until I updated, I was happy as a clam listening to music in my car off my iPhone.
Anyway, I had the same thing happen- white screen with flashing colored lines and then a whole bunch of problems. Eventually, my iPhone became completely unresponsive. An Apple Genius took one look at it and gave me a new phone.

  • Blackberry Srorm cannot charge AC or car charge

Few years ago we have purchase 2 Blackberry Storm from Verizon. My wife's BB
storm had few problem and Verizon replace it with another. Late last year and
some time in February 2011, she had a problem that she could dial or use numbers
on the screen to dial, but still work through speed dial. In  April of the year
we went and purchase Iphone 4. We kept her old BB storm. Recently about 4 weeks
ago my BB Storm with stopped taking the charge. So I bought new battery and it
will still not charge while plug in an outlet. Last 4 weeks or so I start
charging my battery in my wife's phone and putting it in my phone, but it seems
    a hassle.
Is there any way that my BB storm can be fixed, so I can charge either with AC
or Car charger. I think something may be wrong in my phone were the charging
    cord is attached.
Please advice. Right now I do not want to purchase another Phone.
    Thank you,

No, overnight charging is fine. Something untoward has happened to your machine, but merely leaving it plugged in overnight was not a problem.

  • Vivatar car charger not compatible charging device after ios7 update, what gives

What gives? I got my iphone 4 it came with a Vivatar car  charger , I updated to ios7 and now the charger is not a compatible device for charging.

Well, it is not a scientific test, but my iPhone 4S updated to IOS 7 and then IOS 7.0.2 without an issue. Recharges just as quickly with the original Apple charger as it did on IOS 6.
If there is an issue with IOS 7 and iPhone recharging, I have not read about it yet. And you know the people that own non-Apple phones would be fanning this out of proportion if it were widespread.
Take your phone to the nearest Apple store and have them check it out.

  • Where is the car charger?

Is there supposed to be a car charger in the box?
Seems like a $600 phone would come with a charger.
Boy, the price of being in this cult is expensive.

Oh really? Which one? I've owned various cell phones since about 1997. Probably about 10-12 cell phones. None of them have ever come with a free car charger.
Did you get one free as an incentive? That's different than getting one in the box.
It doesn't matter tho, I don't believe you that you got a car charger in the box. I have too much experience to believe that.

  • Car charger freezing my ipod

whenever i plug my 3rd gen ipod into the car charger it freezes. I have to let the battery completely die out and then it works fine. Its not the charger because my sister used it with her 4th gen ipod and has had no problems. Has anybody had this problem and solved it or not solved it? i'm out of the warranty period so that's no longer an option but this is an issue i've had since the beginning.

I'm having this problem with a Belkin car charger. I thought it was the charger until I stumbled across your post. Anyone else having this problem? When I had a Monster iPod FM transmitter/charger, I didn't have this problem. Strange..

  • Interference with iPhone car charger.

Can anyone help me with this issue?
I have tried two Griffin "iPhone compatible" car chargers for my iPhone so far, and when I try to use the car charger in conjunction with my cars AUX in port (RCA plug), I get a very noticeable buzzing interference as soon as I plug in the car charger. If I unplug the charger and just leave the stereo wire plugged in the sound goes away and everything is clear. Is this a common issue with the phone? I have read threads that say people have to put the phone in Airplane Mode to remove interference, but this interference is coming from the charger...not from the cell signal (I assume).
Anyone have any tips so I can play music and charge the phone at the same time? Thanks.

I was also having problems with noise when I had an adapter for my iPhone 3G plugged in to the cigarette lighter socket in the car and playing music through a cable going into the AUX connector of my car stereo. After having trouble with one, I went and bought a Griffin PowerJolt SE but still had a noise problem. After doing some tweeking, I fixed my problem.
    1) It makes no difference whether the airplane mode is on or off, because the interference isn't coming from there.
    2) The amount of noise varies depending upon whether your car engine is running or the ignition switch is in the accessories position. There will likely be a high pitched whine in the latter but also a clicking noise in the first mode. This is interference from the spark plugs in the car. This noise will also vary depending upon the speed of the engine. Also the noise will go away when you are not plugged into the charger.
    3) Check two things in the settings in your iPhone. First, check that the volume limit on the phone is off or is set fairly high.
    4) Now check the volume setting on your iPhone. This needs to be at or near the maximum.
If the last two conditions are not true, then what is happening is that the noise that is coming in through the iPhone from the car ignition and the charger is too loud compared to the audio. This then causes the car amplifier to amplify both the noise and the music for you to hear anything. When the iPhone volume is higher compared to the noise, then the car amplifier amplifies the audio less, but it also amplifies the noise less.
At least these changes made a big difference on my iPhone.
