IPhone 4 antenna review

Bravo Consumer Reports! One, for championing a truthful assessment of this phone and two for continuing to responsibly, independently and objectively report performance reviews of products.
The iPhone 4 is the best smart phone mobile device introduced to date (I've had my iPhone 4 since June 23) but it's also one of the worst phones with respect to conducting voice calls. The problem is quite simple: the antenna is located on the outside of the device, Apple engineers all utilized bumpers/cases in their testing, and holding the phone without a bumper/case results in dropped calls.
Humans are highly conductive and because of our body capacitance we make good antennas. Directly touching antenna segments results in changes to the performance of the antenna. With a tuned antenna, the resulting change is not favorable. A shielded antenna results in less unfavorable interference than one that is touched directly (i.e., without plastic).
Apple can continue to brush this under the rug, but the fact is the phone is flawed in terms of how most people would expect a cell phone to perform.

Two things come to mind if/when a fix is done. Either they (apple) is going to offer a free "bumper". Or two, replacement with a hardware fix.
1) I bought a "bumper" to fix my issue. I paid $30 MORE to get my iphone4 to work. They can tell me I'm holding it wrong, but they shouldn't. If the crack was on the very top, then maybe I can see them telling me it's my fault as not many people hold it from the top. But it's on the side of the phone.
Will Apple give me back my money for buying this bumper if they give a free one? I doubt it. So again, I'm the looser.
And if this is the fix being offered, now I'm limited to what accessories I can get. I already found out my car charger won't plug into the phone with the "bumper" on. I also found out that if I want to use a "invisible shield" I can't. It'll be too thick to use the bumper without it ruining the shield. So again, I'm the looser.
2) iphone4 swap. Best idea. Then at least I'll have a phone that would allow me to choose what accessories I want that was made for an iphone4
People asked, why didn't I jsut return the phone within the 30days? I switched from one carrier to another. I got rid of my old phone. And like many here, I bought apps. Not to mention I heard that Apple was planning a "fix", which sounded good considering Apple's track record. So returning the phone wouldn't be a piece of cake unless I want to loose over a $100's over it.

  • IPhone 4- antenna issues past 9/30?

    Good morning-
I would like to purchase the new iPhone 4 but am concerned about antenna issues since Apple has stopped giving out the free cases. Has Apple fixed the issues with the antenna, or will I have to purchase a case on my own, and hope there aren't any more problems? I currently have a 3G and haven't had too much of a problem with the antenna or reception.

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/case-program/
We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. *Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.*

  • Using iphone's antenna to radiate any signal

    Hi everybody!
I was wondering if there's any library in X-code that lets you use iphone's antenna to emit any kind of signal (of course in the frequencies this antenna has been designed for) without using the tipical protocols for GSM , Wireless or Bluetooth communications.
    Thanks!

    No.

  • How to connect 3g iphone Passive Antenna Adapter to phone?

Having a hard time to finding solution to this question. I'm finding that there are antenna adapters for the iphone. However, I'm having a hard time finding articles, pictures, or video on how to use them.
So can any one help me out?
My goal is to increase my iphone 3g cell phone signal. I have some plans on how to do it. I'm not willing to purchase and booster or cell repeater; they usually cost $200 dollars, or more. And I'm not willing to buy a cheaper repeater on ebay or some biding site....

  • IPhone 6 Antenna Vs. iPhone 5S Antenna

HEllo Apple and other members recently i saw some videos...  of iphone6 has faster network signals...  iPhone LTE Speed Test: iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5s
iam having iphone 5s there is no LTE in my area.. in my home there is 2 bars of 3g network that is very slow,.  my question is using iphone6 can solve my problem ?? iphone 6 has better antenna ???

If there is no LTE coverage in your area, then the iPhone 6 has no LTE signals it can connect to, to use. It will use the same 3G signals available to your iPhone 5s. In which case the reception is likely to be the same as with the iPhone 5s.
In  other words, its unlikely the iPhone 6 will provide any noticeably better reception.
It comes down to an environmental problem, rather than something an antenna could resolve even if it is newer and maybe better.

  • IPhone 5 antenna issue when placed on steel furniture?

I listen to podcasts on my iPhone through a Bluetooth earpiece while doing stuff in the kitchen. When I tried to do this with my new iPhone 5, the Bluetooth audio was really messed up, dropping like crazy.
After some experimentation I realized that this happened because I was placing the iPhone 5 on a large stainless steel shelf, with the aluminum back in full contact with the stainless steel surface. The issue goes away when I place the phone glass side down. I tried it again with a different steel shelf in my house, and got the same result.
I read somewhere that the aluminum back is part of the antenna in some way. So I'm guessing that this will happen to all iPhone 5s, rather than just mine. Has anybody tried this? Antennagate resurrected?

Try pinching the upper left part of your phone and it looses bluetooth signal as well...and I have too experienced your situation as well as the bluetooth one.

  • IPhone 3GS antenna interfering with other phones?

Does anyone know if the iPhone was known to cause "interferences" with other mobile devices? According to an employee at the iPhone provider in Saudi Arabia, Mobily, the iPhone 3G (released in late Feb 2009) antenna was interfering with other phones. They said that Apple didn't fix it with the 3GS so they can't release it.
Did anyone else heard of something similar? Did any other carrier say anything about the iPhone antenna causing interference?
(let me go on a quick rant about the iPhone 3GS release here):
Another employee claimed that Mobily didn't meet expected sales (their own fault, they are hurting the iPhone 3G).
What's really weird is all of the countries listed here
    http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/wwdc2009/wwdc2009-843.jpg
got their iPhone 3GS in August. Only exceptions are: Saudi Arabia (Mobily), UAE (Etisalat) and Jordan (Orange). I am trying the feedback form, but, does anyone have any idea on why are these countries missing?
    Thanks

  • Iphone 4 antenna problem not so fix

ok so you guys fix the problem with the iphone 4 bumper case , the problem is that my iphone 4 cost too much money to put it in a case that doesn't protect that much , i have my iphone 4 in a really protective case , and i have problems with the antenna , not to much , but i have them , so i suggest to make a really really protective iphone 4 case , that will fix the antenna problem , and i hope you guys do it , dont wait until the iphone 4g or 5

This is a user to user help forum ONLY. You are not addressing Apple here.
The only thing a case does in this regard is prevent you from bridging the small gap in the antenna at the lower left of the iPhone with skin. The only thing. If you have a problem when using any case that prevents this and there are a number of 3rd party cases to choose from - the case industry for the iPhone (all models) is a significant industry by itself, call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

  • IPhone 5- antenna scratches?

Ok right out of the box my antenna has scratches on it.  not throwing a fit or anything but i am just puzzled as to why apple engineers would use a metal material that scratches so easily that they cant even ship it to me without more than one scratch on it.
also the metal seems to be buffed which almost wipes right off.  my phone has what looked like a smudge on the metal... i am wiping it off and it almost feels as if the buffing will wipe off with the smudge.
i really dont get it apple.  the entire back of the phone is made out of this metal which scratches super easy.  i dont even want to use my phone until the rubber case comes so that way at least i can sell this for a fair price when i want to get the new one.

    ~Update~
I was looking at it again under a light in my closet and was able to rub the scratches off!!!!!!
it looks great now there isnt a scratch on it.  i will keep an eye but hopefully this metal is more resiliant than the one on the iPhone 4.

  • Battery consumption when touching the iPhone 4 antenna. I want to share with you all an assumption...

I've noticed that when I'm holding my iPhone 4 the battery drains faster.. Is it possible that when you are holding it the iPhone raises the antenna's power to reduce the signal loss?
Signal weakens when I'm holding it, doesn't matter if I'm touching the death-grip. When I bridge the antennas, signal weakens ever more..
My hypothesis: not using a bumper, not only would affect your signal, but your battery.
Do you think this is possible?

You have to ignore talhakhan99's suggestion at all costs.
Jailbreaking violates Apple's Terms of Use and this forum can offer no help or support for jailbroken devices. You risk making your iPhone completely useless. If you wish, you can read Apple's thoughts on this here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743 .
I feel confident that this thread will be removed shortly as a consequence of talhakhan99's coments.
As for you actual question about texting on an iPhone, it should be reasonably easy to work out how to do it if ytou are already familiar with texting on phones.

  • Iphone 4 antenna Problem?

    Hi
Can anyone with an iPhone 4 confirm if the reception issue (antennagate) occurs ONLY if the *gap between the two antennas (wifi and 3g) is bridged (connected)* with your finger?
OR if it *happens even* when you touch the bottom left corner of the phone without bridging the gap between the two antennas?
    Message was edited by: mnohr096

Both. The issue occurs most notably in poor outdoor reception areas or indoors where most testing was done (CR, PhoneDog, etc tested indoors). Mostly tested with 3 bars in 4.0.1 or 4-5 bars in 4.0. If you use a smartphone as covering the whole phone on the left palm, this can interrupt the signal unless you keep away from the black line.
The typical way people hold normal phones is by the fingertips, not the palm, during phone conversations. Just avoid putting your fingers on the black line and put it in the center of the sides and you won't have the issue.
Data entering, people would cover the phone when texting or surfing the web. This would lower the bars significantly while surfing the web.
